Supported by Aboriginal Elders, two German Lutheran missionaries opened a school for Kaurna children in 1839. The Lutheran missionaries not only learnt the language of the Kaurna naon but published an extensive work list grammar and collecon of sentences of the language. They sent to Germany some of the first documents wrien by aboriginal children in South Australia in their own vernacular. Senior Kaurna Elder Uncle Lewis O’ Brien writes about this: These are kids “off the street’ showing that they could read and write in their own language in a very short time’. About his own family Lewis O’ Brien writes: ‘My great great grandmother had to earn the right to marry her husband in 1848 because she was the first Aboriginal woman to marry a white man. She had to learn to read and write in English in three months and they call her the ‘educated woman.’ She taught her husband to read and write and he came from England so you can see this contradiction. Dear Parents,

Reconciliation Week is a time for remembering the unique history of the Adelaide Plains region of South Australia first settled thousands of years ago by our enterprising indigenous sisters and brothers of the Kaurna Nation. Not far from St. Dominic’s, on the northern edge of the Torrens near the golf course, is the site of the first Indigenous school “Pilta Wodli” or “Possum House” where, educationally, black and white races met in harmony in the early unpredictable years of colonial settlement. Supported by Aboriginal Elders, two German Lutheran missionaries opened a school for Kaurna children in 1839. The Lutheran missionaries not only learnt the language of the Kaurna nation but published an extensive work list grammar and collection of sentences of the language. They sent to Germany some of the first documents written by aboriginal children in South Australia in their own vernacular. Senior Kaurna Elder Uncle Lewis O’ Brien writes about this:

These are kids “off the street’ showing that they could read and write in their own language in a very short time’. The colonisers look at us, these funny little people that live simply… there’s a contradiction to that. We live simply but we weren’t simple people. We’re rather complicated.

Back here in a place called St Dominic’s, not far from Pilta Wodli, is a school which also serves students who are also keen to learn. The facilities of former times have utterly changed as you well know. Right now we are looking to you for some moral and material support as we provide the funds to expand our site but also to engage with you in the educational process.

Relationally, and supportively come along and be involved in 1) Tonight’s Careers Expo at Blackfriars. 2) This Friday night’s Quiz Show - $12 per ticket. 3) Next Tuesday night’s ONLINE SAFETY PRESENTATION 4) Next Wednesday night’s Number One Fete meeting for the year at 7.30pm

with a 7:00pm Pizza tea for all who would like to partake.

2018 Maths OlympiadOn Wednesday 23rd May 26 students from Years 5 and 6 sat the first of five tests in the 2018 Maths Olympiad. The Olympiad is run by the Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads.

The Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads (APSMO) is a not-for-profit organisation that offers a range of mathematical competitions for students aged 8 - 14. The programs focus on the students’ ability to solve problems in a creative manner - as opposed to simply reaching a solution using a prescribed method. The APSMO Maths Olympiad has been operating in primary schools since 1987 and in high schools since 2003. Each year thousands of schools participate in the competition from around Australia and New Zealand. The main aims of the competition are to:

- Introduce important mathematical concepts- Teach strategies and develop flexibility for problem solving- Foster creativity and ingenuity and strengthen intuition- Stimulate enthusiasm and enjoyment of mathematics- Provide the satisfaction, joy and thrill of meeting challenges

Student EngagementWe look forward to Asia Week, where all classes will be engaged in activities to develop and extend their knowledge about the geography, animals, arts, culture and customs of, specifically, Indonesia. The week will culminate with art activities, a shared lunch and a special performance by Pilangi Nusantara dance group. Thank you to all the parents who have already sent in $2 donations and to those who have offered to help organise Friday’s shared lunch. We ask that you please be at school at 11:30 and remember that all food must have the ingredients listed. We are also grateful to the Morkunas family for providing us with many Indonesian artefacts for our foyer displays.

This year we have entered two teams in the Da Vinci Decathlon which was held at St Peter’s Girls School on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. The Year 5/6 team are: Victoria Mackay, Tina Le, Alexandra Chavez, An Do, Cecilia Nguyen, Jasmine Sewart, Olivia Jensen and Willow Rann. The Year 7 team are: Tam Bui, Madeleine Dungey, Lucy Johnson, Jiya Joseph, Isabella Jovel, Livia Truong, Alessandra Romeo and Isabelle Tran. We would like to thank Mrs Maycock, Ms Rodrigues, Ms Osborne, Mrs Baker, Mr Noble, Miss Ward and Mrs Shepherd for their assistance during familiarisation sessions.

The Da Vinci Decathlon is an academic interschool day in the spirit of an Olympic Decathlon. Students work to a timeframe in teams of eight; completing a series of tasks across the following disciplines: Mathematics, English, Science, Code Breaking, Engineering Challenge, Forensic Sleuths, Creative Producers, Art and Poetry, Ideation, Cartography, Games of Strategy and General Knowledge. The tasks are exciting and challenging with a particular emphasis on higher order thinking skills. The day offers students an opportunity to test their capacity to critically think, make quick accurate judgements to problem solve and to respect the intellect of others through teamwork.

We will publish results and photos in next week’s Bulletin.

Thursday Night Netball: last week we had three very confident wins and one narrow loss. They are competing fairly, learning new skills and enjoying the games. A reminder that training for the Year 5/6 and Year 4 teams will be at lunchtime on Thursday.

Assembly: this week’s assembly was hosted by the Year 1 Class. They were confident and entertaining and we also thank the parents who were able to attend.

Parent EngagementLast Friday morning our Reception Class held a special liturgy for their mothers. They led group and individual prayer, shared why they loved their mums and sang I Have a Family and More Than Enough, beautifully. After the liturgy, mums and daughters had a mini mummy makeover. Our students usually share their reflections, however today we have some thoughts from mothers who attended:

‘A beautiful celebration’ - Felicity Eaton‘A very special day and it was lovely. Thank you.’ - Loriana Ciccozzi‘It was a lovely liturgy and I’m very proud of Lily and all the girls.’ - Bianca Benassi-Evans‘An emotional experience. It is good to spend this special time together. I am very thankful.’ - Usha Agarwal

Quiz NightHave you bought your tickets to the Quiz Night? I have and am looking forward to popping on my fluro outfit and reliving some of those memorable 80s moments. It is an important community building event and an enjoyable experience. Tickets are available from the College Office or online: https://stdo.ms/Quiz18. Hope to see many of you there.

Parent EngagementIn 2017, you may remember completing

a survey which focused on;o Parent engagement with Social Mediao Student engagement with Social Media

including how many hours per week o How parents discuss and set boundaries per

their daughter/s Social Media use o What further information parents seek about

safe, responsible and respectful Social Media use and how they wish to receive it.

The data obtained from this survey helped to inform the school of ways in which parents are seeking support. To support parents with the tools to keep their children safe and promote responsible home use of Social Media and Communication Devices, we are fortunate to welcome guest speaker Sony Ryan to give an Online Safety Presentation to interested parents with daughters in Years 5-12. Sonya will also be delivering safety messages to all Year 8 and 9 students at this College. This supports topics being explored in the Pastoral Care Program at each year level.

Colours of Impressionism Pt 1masterpieces from the Musee D’Orsay

Over the past week, the Year 10 French and Year 11 and 12 Visual Arts classes were fortunate to visit the ‘Colours of Impressionism’ exhibition at the Art Gallery of South Australia; viewing the masterpieces exclusively on loan from the Musée d’Orsay in Paris from two distinctly different educational perspectives. In this week’s Bulletin, we feature a Year 11 Visual Arts reflection:

Visiting the “Colours of Impressionism Masterpieces from the Musee D’Orsay” is a definite must for all art enthusiasts. The Black to Light theme of the gallery made the Year 11 and 12 art students stop in awe and admire the different styles and textures seen in each piece, along with the bold choices in colours used by famous French artists, such as Claude Monet and Johan Barthold Jongkind. I learnt a lot about lighting, texture and colour. We were also fortunate to take some time to view at the art works from the “Divided Worlds” and look at eye-opening contemporary art. Two hours was not enough to explore the art gallery and the beautiful pieces it had to offer.

Anna Nguyen, Year 11 Visual Arts [Design]

Run Your Own Business Year 10 CommerceLast week the Year 10 Commerce students had the opportunity to work in groups and run their own business for a day. The students prepared a business plan whereby they researched what products they were going to provide. They had to market their products, look at the logistics involved in running a business, prepare financial statements and review how the business performed. There was an assortment of sweets available at the Baked Goods Stall which included chocolate chip cookies, cup cakes and caramel slices, as well as Eton Mess, brownies, spiders and Krispy Kreme donuts. The Savoury Foods were also popular with the girls selling a variety of pizzas and toasted sandwiches. A fun time was had by all, with many students acknowledging how much work is involved in running your own business. The girls raised $766.15 in profit which will be donated to the Vinnies Winter Appeal.

Well done girls and thank you to everyone for your support! Mrs Tina Caruso, Year 10 Commerce Teacher

Knockout NetballOn Thursday May 24th, St Dominic’s Priory College hosted round one of the Knockout Netball Competition against Marryatville Primary School. The first quarter saw some excellent passages of play and accurate shooting by our goalies Alessandra and Elise. Marryatville had a narrow lead at quarter time which grew as the game continued. The girls demonstrated persistence, team work and excellent sportsmanship. They were beaten by a taller, more experienced team on the day. The final score was 35-18. Well done girls!
