OverviewThis application note describes how to install a TSU-KT1000 digital sound decoder into a Kato HO C44-9W/AC4400CW (Late).
Skill Level 1: The entire installation can be completed in less than an hour with no modification required to the model.

Installation
1. Begin by removing the couplers and coupler boxes. Unscrew the screws located in the center of the boxes and gently pull the coupler boxes out from each end. Lift off the shell. (Photo 1)
2. Remove the track pickup wires from the clips located on the sides of the light board at the center. (Photo 2)
3. Remove the two screws holding the light board in place. (Photo 3)
4. Remove the light board. Be sure to note the motor leads that are copper strips pushed through holes in the board. These should easily press out. (Photo 4)
5. Install the Tsunami TSU-KT1000. Be sure to install the copper strip motor leads fully through the appropriate holes in the decoder. (Photo 5)
6. Reinstall the two screws that hold the decoder in place. (Photo 6)

9. Feed the wires through the frame to the speaker housing. Be sure the plug is on the decoder side of the frame. (Photo 10)
10. Trim 1/8” of insulation from the ends of the speaker wires. Solder the two wires to the speaker. (Photo 11)
12. Thread the wires through the slots in the side of the speaker enclosure. Place the speaker into the housing and replace it in the fuel tank. Press on the outer edge of the speaker only as pressing on the cone could damage the speaker. Snap the fuel tank back in place around the speaker. (Photos 12 and 13)
7. Install the four track pickup wires by inserting the exposed tip of each wire into the corresponding clip on the decoder. Take care not to cross the left and right rail wires; doing so will cause a short. Test the locomotive for proper light and motor operation by placing it on the mainline, selecting address 3, and running it in both directions. There will be no sound yet. (Photo 7)
8. Locate the speaker enclosure in the fuel tank. Slide a fl at screwdriver into the tab to release the two halves at the front and back of the fuel tank. The 1” baffl e is inside. (Photos 8 and 9)

13. Plug the speaker harness into the plug located on the underside of the front of the decoder. (Photo 14)

14. Test run to ensure proper operation of sound, motor and lights. Correct any problems. Replace the shell and coupler boxes removed in Step 1. Enjoy!
