The PBIS committee at Southern Middle is excited to welcome
back all students for the 2017-2018 school year Over the sum-
mer PBIS at Southern Middle had a bit of a facelift This year
we have a new Bulldog PRIDE slogan a new Bulldog PRIDE
Pledge and a new Bulldog Buck Please be on the lookout for
fun grade level monthly incentives in the weekly newsletter
This monthrsquos homework for parents is to ask your child if they
have received any Bulldog Bucks yet and for what positive be-
haviors they were displaying

Any parents interested in be-ing a chaperone for the mu-sic field trips to the Baltimore Symphony SoCo Tour AACPS Music Festival or the trip to Kings Dominion should complete their back-ground check forms right away The background checks expire every two years so contact the office if you are not sure when your forms ex-pire
Strength and Conditioning in-tramural will resume on Wednesday October 11th at 715 am Students should come ready to exercise and will have a chance to change their clothes after-wards They are also encour-aged to bring water and snack for after the workout )

American Sign Language
ASL 1 The first context of the Personal and Public Identities unit fo-cuses on aspects of personal introductions including basic personal information fingerspelling and negotiating a signing environ-ment Most students have entered the class with this knowledge learned from last year The first unit focuses on reteaching and re-viewing material from Intro to ASL Students are learning the most basic elements of language and culture
Intro ASL In the unit we just completed students learned to recog-nize and produce the manual alphabet and understand its use in practical communication They also examined and debunked com-mon myths about dDeaf people and Deaf culture In the next unit the will learn to produce and understand basic practical words and question words in ASL and understand and apply cultural norms of politeness for dDeaf people
What a great first month for AVID Stu-dents have set their binders up for success and have learned how to fill out their agenda book the AVID way We have also been able to start key skills such as Cornell Notetaking and Costas Levels of Questioning In October we will begin training on AVID tutorials The AVID teach-ers are currently seeking parent volunteers who will be willing to come work with groups of students throughout the year If you are interested in more details about this volunteer opportunity please contact Mrs Sturgell (jlsturgellaacpsorg)

ASL 1 The first context of the Personal and Public Identities unit fo-cuses on aspects of personal introductions including basic personal information fingerspelling and negotiating a signing environ-ment Most students have entered the class with this knowledge learned from last year The first unit focuses on reteaching and re-viewing material from Intro to ASL Students are learning the most basic elements of language and culture
Intro ASL In the unit we just completed students learned to recog-nize and produce the manual alphabet and understand its use in practical communication They also examined and debunked com-mon myths about dDeaf people and Deaf culture In the next unit the will learn to produce and understand basic practical words and question words in ASL and understand and apply cultural norms of politeness for dDeaf people
What a great first month for AVID Stu-dents have set their binders up for success and have learned how to fill out their agenda book the AVID way We have also been able to start key skills such as Cornell Notetaking and Costas Levels of Questioning In October we will begin training on AVID tutorials The AVID teach-ers are currently seeking parent volunteers who will be willing to come work with groups of students throughout the year If you are interested in more details about this volunteer opportunity please contact Mrs Sturgell (jlsturgellaacpsorg)
