Message from the CEO“A Unique Journey Towards Resilience”

We, at Alba, believe that a safe working environment is closely tied to the financial success and growth of the Company. Safety is our number one priority as it ensures that our people are safe and happy, thus directly influencing our reputation as a leading employer of choice in Bahrain.

This year, we mark the 5th anniversary of the launch of Alba’s new safety principles, namely:

1. Ownership of safety is everyone’s responsibility.2. Working safely is a condition of employment.3. All work related injuries and illnesses are preventable.

These principles have played a vital role in Alba’s transformational safety journey, changing the mindset of our employees and paving the way towards reaching the higher levels of safety throughout the Company.

This year, Alba had a successful year in safety due to the collective efforts of all Alba employees, contractors and our partners from the public and private sectors. We were able to finish the summer season without any cases of heat exhaustion as well as leverage on our safety learnings to set an industry record during the Line 5 recovery period.

One of the vital components of changing the safety culture in Alba has been direct communication. The levels of engagement between members of the management team and shop floor employees have played a crucial role in building Alba’s safety culture.

I am pleased to say that our continued focus on safety has empowered us to achieve our operational goals and objects. It is indeed a remarkable journey that turned our vision into a reality.

We now carry the same level of safety awareness as we proceed with the Line 6 Expansion Project and work with our contractors to finish the Project on time and safely.

““ Direct communication is important in the promotion of a safe working culture

01- Safety

2017 has been an eventful year full of various Safety, Health and Environment challenges, achievements and milestones. Despite of the increase in the complexity of the operational and environmental challenges facing Alba and the Aluminium industry as a whole, the organization showed extreme resilience by the enforcement of strict Safety rules and regulations across the various stages and operational requirements.

Alba Executives and senior management have always demonstrated their direct involvement and leadership in cascading Alba’s safety principles down the reporting structure. The use of Alba’s simple and easy to follow safety principles i.e. (1) Ownership of safety is everyone’s responsibility (2) Working safely is a condition of employment and (3) All work related injuries and illnesses are preventable, was an effective tool in unifying the efforts and objectives towards reaching the next level of safety and preventing major accidents and injuries. This was also possible through the effective utilization of a few communication and knowledge sharing tools in the form of campaigns, awareness programs, educational sessions and site visits.

““ Showing strong resilience in our safety performance

Believe it to achieve it

The first SHE campaign for the year 2017 was inaugurated in March under the theme ‘Believe it to Achieve it’. The campaign was launched to further strengthen Alba’s commitment to Health, Safety and Environment and boost awareness on the proper use of tools, equipment and pedestrian safety. It came as part of Alba’s belief that a ZERO injury work environment is possible across various departments and organizational levels.

The campaign was also in line with Alba CEO’s Expectation ‘Safety Tomorrowland’, which focuses on reaching the next level of safety by empowering supervisors and non-management staff to achieve the full ownership of their safety as well as the safety of their colleagues.

Alba aims to extend its safety culture and knowledge to members of the general public by partnering with the governmental and private bodies in spreading the awareness and knowledge. Each year, Alba celebrates the World Civil Defence Day on March 1st by cooperating with the General Directorate for Civil Defence and sharing the main theme of the celebration with employees and contractors. This year, the theme of the World Civil Defence Day is based on being prepared to face and mitigate disasters by involving all members of the society in reducing the risks and preventing human loss.

The safety competition was a new addition to the line-up of activities included in this year’s summer campaign with the aim of adding diversity to the program and promoting a culture of reading and learning. Winners of the interdepartmental safety competition were announced after succeeding in passing the elimination rounds and reaching the final round. The safety competition was well received by the attendees who enjoyed all the stages and encouraged their colleagues to answer all the trivia questions correctly.

The daily awareness sessions were followed by shop floor visits by the Executive Management team, Directors and line managers along with members of the SHE department, the organizing committee and representatives from Alba trades unions. The main aim of these visits was to boost the morale of employees and thank them for their loyalty, commitment and one family spirit in recent months. Throughout the years, the Holy month of Ramadan has been considered as the focal point of social activities in the whole Islamic world. The fasting season provides the golden opportunity to connect with family members, colleagues and friends in the spirit of generosity and re-kindle old friendships to bridge gaps between people and societies. This year’s fasting season coincides with the start of the summer months in Bahrain, and with it comes the challenge of ensuring the safety of Alba employees during 15-hour long fasting day.

To achieve this purpose, Alba’s Executive Management team started the Ramadan Challenge by distributing awareness leaflets that contain useful information on the healthy manners of fasting throughout the month. Alba employees from all departments were welcomed at the Alba gates

and reminded of the importance of watching for their own safety as well as the safety of their colleagues during the Holy Month of Ramadan.

This was followed by an extensive schedule of shop-floor visits that took place before and after iftar time, through which members of the Executive Management team, directors, line manager and SHE coordinators shared with all employees the latest safety updates and the most important tips to complete the fasting month with no injuries or accidents.

The summer season is one of the most challenging periods for Alba in terms of ensuring the safety of employees and eliminating any cases of heat exhaustion during the hot and humid summer days. This year, Alba continued its efforts in preparing for the summer season by launching the ‘Summer Safety Challenge’ Campaign at the start of the summer months. Aimed at raising summer safety awareness, the Summer Safety Challenge unveiled three areas of focus: Stop Lost Time Injuries (LTIs); Decrease Injuries; and have Zero Heat Exhaustions.

The success of Alba’s Safety, Health and Environment programs depends greatly on the effectiveness of its partnership and cooperation with regulatory and official governmental bodies. This year, Alba partnered with the Ministry of Labour and Social Development and the Ministry of Health to arrange “My Health….My Responsibility” summer safety awareness program targeting contractors and labourers working in direct sunlight during the summer months. The program was launched in the Oasis Hall under the patronage of HE Mr Subah Bin Salem Al Dossary, undersecretary of the Ministry of Labour and Social Development and Dr. Mohamed Bin Daina, CEO of the Supreme Council for Environment, in the presence of the member of the Executive Management team.

With the conclusion of the summer months, it was imperative for all Alba employees and contractors to maintain the safety momentum and achieve the overall goals towards the end of the year. “Safety in all seasons” is another campaign designed to remind employees and contractors of their safety goals and expectations as well as showcase an innovative concept that can grab the attention of employees and keep them focused on the full ownership of safety. Based on this, the umbrella icon was used as the central theme for this campaign to focus on the aspect of sheltering people against potential harm and link it to the seasonal changes in the weather and the surrounding environmental aspects that might affect the safety and wellbeing of employees. Alba CEO, Executives, Directors and Managers distributed special promotional materials to all employees to kick start the campaign, which was followed by a series of keynote presentations by Alba CEO and directors on various topics such as liquid metal safety, road safety and pedestrian safety.

The elimination of unsafe working conditions across the plant is an important component in the safety management system of any major company. One of the main objectives of the Industrial Hygiene section within the Safety, Health and Environment department is to assess the risks associated with the working conditions and provide the necessary recommendations to eliminate these risks. This year, one of the most remarkable milestones achieved by the Industrial Hygiene section is maintaining ZERO heat exhaustion cases particularly during the hot and humid summer months. This was not possible without the extensive support provided by the Executives and senior management in tracking the awareness program on daily basis and ensuring that all employees are aware of the hazards surrounding the summer season. The importance of direct and continuous communication was also illustrated during the various stages of the dissemination of information related to heat exhaustion and working in hot conditions.

Heat stress is a major concern among occupational health specialists in Bahrain, and particularly in Alba due to the impact of the elevated temperatures during the summer season in Bahrain, and the nature of the smelting industry. Heat stress occurs when the body’s means of controlling its internal temperature begin to fail. Air temperature, work rate, humidity and work clothing are all contributing factors that can cause heat stress.

Combating Heat Stress

Safety Booklet 2017 | Industrial Hygiene

Alba is a pioneer in Heat Stress Management and is known to strictly follow the prescribed international standards and the best practices, including the use of WBGT (Wet Bulb Globe Temperature) index. The WBGT index is measured 4 times a day and communicated to all supervisors via different communication channels such as emails, display screen around the organization and social media platforms.

WBGT index is then used by all operational team members to plan the workload and gauge the readiness of all employees to perform the required tasks without risking the possibility of being impacted by heat exhaustion.

Hydration Surveys are important leading indicators of the readiness of employees to face the demanding working conditions during the summer season. To have a clear and scientific baseline for Alba employees and contractors, the industrial hygiene team conducted a comprehensive hydration survey in which a sample of urine was obtained from workers randomly to test the levels of body hydration. This year, the results were mostly positive compared to last year, which indicates that the awareness programs that were put in place to elevate employees’ awareness were successful in getting more employees staying hydrated at the start of their working shift at Alba.

Total fluoride emissions from reduction areas represented by emissions from GTC and FTP stacks as well as roof fugitive emissions over the span of 12 months indicate total compliance with the regulatory limitations for safe emissions despite of various operational difficulties. This is a clear indication of the overall efficiency of Alba’s pot-lines and smelting technology. As part of the surrounding community, Alba is committed towards the protection of the environment and the elimination of possible sources of harm and pollution. This will not only benefit the reputation of the company as leading smelter in the globe but will also help in the attainment of all legal requirements for the Line 6 contracts and agreements.

As a leading smelter and an industrial powerhouse in the region, it is imperative for Alba to secure excellent working relationship and track record with the Supreme Council of Environment (SCE), the leading regulatory body in the kingdom of Bahrain. Regular visits by members of the Executive Management team and the SCE are carried out on continuous basis to discuss issues related to environmental compliance and the efforts adopted lately by Alba to lower its emissions further. The topic of Waste Management and the opportunities of investing in Waste and By-products generated by Alba with the aim of reusing it or to feed it to other industries as raw material was also a highlight of these regular visits.
