PUT YOUR BEST CASE FORWARD!

Welcome to the latest issue of the BUFORAJournal.

I was recently contacted by an old friend whoinvited me to write an article about my bestcase to publish in a magazine he represents. This got me thinking, not only what my beslcase would be, but along the lines of is thereeven such a thing as a best case.

One of the alms of BUFORA is to promote thescientific investigation of UFO and relatedphenomena. And in the world of sciencepeople deal not in best cases but in the overallweight of the evidence. Clearly if you are awiiness then your own report is very importantto you. lt is also important, regardless ofwhether it is an abduction report or a light inthe sky, in the larger scheme of things. lt justmay not be central.

Think of a UFO report as if it were a brick.Bricks come in many sizes and differentcolours, in fact just like UFO reports. Whilstan individual brick is of limited use, if youcombine it with other bricks and cement youcan build a wallora house

A case for UFOS must, like bricks, be builtupon solid foundations. ln a wall a brick issupported by those around it and in turn itoffers support for its neighbours. You canremove one or two bricks from a wall and it isfine. But if you remove too many then the wallcomes crashing down. So too with UFOtheories, if they are built on dodgy foundationsand have too many holes, so they comecrashing down also.

When we investigate UFO reports we do ourbest to remove cases which might, however

remotely, be explained by existing knownphenomena. lt is true that a few misidentif-ied cases may get through, as might a fewhoaxes, but by and large the cases on whichtheories can be built are a clean sample. The few hoaxes could be considered as thefew missing bricks in our wall

The beauty of buibing a theory from a widenumber of cases is that the strength of allthe other cases nullifies the weakness inany individual case. I believe the time oftheindividual case is dead. And we should notbe afraid to take another look at old cases tn

the light of new evidence, like NormanOliver recently did with the Scoriton case, tosee if our wall needs renovation.

I think it all comes back to a subject that I

have spoken about before and that isreproducibility. That is coming back toindividuals who have repeated UFOincidents in locations where there arerepeated t-JFO reports.

So, in my closing remarks what would bemy best case? I think this is where I camejn, my best case is all of them. ln thisinstance the sum of all the cases is reallygreater than all its component parts.

Betty Hill Passes AwayJohn Spencer

Betty Hill, aged 85, died from cancer on 19rhOctober 2004. Her husband, Barney, had diedin 1969 less than a decade after theexperience that brought them to mediaattention for the rest oftheir lives.

On '1gth September 1961 Betty, and herhusband Barney, reported a UFO encounterwhich forever changed UFO research. Theyreported an abduction by aliens which was thefirst of a long-enduring motif which haspersisted to this day. Technica y it was notthe fkst abduction - Antonio Villas Boasreported such a kidnapping in South Americain 1957 - but it was the first that contained themajority of the elements reported to this day;missing time, dwarf-life, almond-eyed allens, medical examination and so on.

It was the first public exposure of these detailsand became high profile thanks to the bookwritten about their experience, ,The

lnterrupted Journey' penned by investigativejournalist John G Fuller.

Controversy has surrounded the report eversince, and quite rightly given the huge impactit has on the subject. How much influence didher readlng of Donald Keyhoe's book have inher recollections? What influence did herpsychiatrist and hypnotist, Dr Simon, belleveappropriate when he said: 'there are definiteindications that her dreams had beensuggested as a reality by her supervisor (atwork)". Fuller states in his book "The doctorbelieved this (abduction) to be too improbabte, and much material was similar to dreammaterial." When reproducing the tetter Bettywrote to Donald Keyhoe why did Fu ersuppress the line "We are considering thepossibility of a competent psychiatrist whouses hypnotism"? She mentioned ,The

Twilight Zone' as a programme she watchedand just before her first regression on March7th 1964 'The Outer Limits' broadcast anepisode called 'The Bellero Shield' which"featured an alien with large eyes that stretchalmost to the sides of its head" Did that image

influence her memories, and explainapparent inconsistencjes between her recalland Barney's' description of a quite differentalien face?

lmportant questions, but whatever theinterpretation there is titfle doubt the Hillsencountered a UFO during their journey.UFO researcher Jacques Vallee mentionsrepod No 100/1/6.1 from the files of the100th Bomb Wing of Strategic AirCommand, Pease Air Force Base, NewHampshire which describes an object whichwas detected on therr radar that may havebeen the object the Hills saw.lvly own impression of Betty was alwaysthat, whatever happened, she sjncerelybelieved what she reported and was honestand courageous in telling the story. Theywere a mixed-race couple in the middle ofthe American Civil Rights movements andthey probably didn't need any adversepublicity but they went pubtic with a storythat could hardly have failed to courtcontroversy, because they believed itimportant.

Barney died in 1969 teaving Betty tobecome thetr spokesman in thiscontroversial field and she never faltered. lnlater years she was to tell me that there wasa time when she could not leave her housewithout being followed by UFOS. tn atelevision interview she also stated that shewas in contact with the aliens and had aspecial way of calling them; driving toremote locations and flashing a code on hercar headlights.

Whatever the reality her experience was alife changing one for her, and a signiticantinfluence for change on the subject. Herbravery in coming foMard and not retreatingin the face of legitimate controversy is to beapplauded. From accounts such as hers, whatever the reality behind the experienc€,we will learn something of value to thesubject to add to what J Allen Hynek oncereferred to as 'an embarrassment of riches'.

READERS WRITE

Dear Sir.

I noticed when re-reading the BUFORAMagazrne of 2001, pa'a 2.8 that there is anaccount of the most famous Radarl/isualcase near.R.A.F. Lakenhealh durinq the nightof the 13'h-14th ot August 1956. Thrs hasorompted me to recounl my own experienceswhilst on my national service in 1949-51 (twoyears).

Because of these experiences, I am a firmbeliever that life in some form, exists on otherplanets, and they could be in excess of 50years ahead of ourselves in space travel etc.

I started my National Service in October 1949and after the usual kitting out process atPadgate, I was sent to Wilmslow, Cheshire for8 weeks' square bashing. After thjs I went onto kain as a radar operator at Yatesbury,Wiltshire for the next 6 weeks.

Although after completion of my radar kainrngI applied for service overseas I was assignedto R.A.F. Wartling, a radar station nearPevensey Bay, Eastbourne, Sussex.

Although I have never witnessed a UFO orindeed anything that would remotely pass as aUFO, it was during my stay at Warfling (18months) that things occurred to foster mybelief in UFOS. lt is necessary to exptain thatwe were divided into radar watches or crewsof four or five airmen, together with a pilotofficer in charge. Our job was to track allakcraft mov€ments in our area of the SouthCoast and to ensure that they were correcflyidentified.

We were on day and night watches and duringmy time at Wartling there were manyoccasions when objects could not beidentified. When this happened aircrafl, usually Meteors, would be scrambled frombases such as Tangmere. West Malling etc tointercept and identify these UFOs. The pitotswere also in direct radio/telephone contactwith the pilot officer in charge of our radar

cabrn The prlots reponed many sightings ofstrange circutar objeqts whrch were iogged asUFOS However, as soon as ttre [titeorsapprcached the UFOS they would veer awayat tremendous speed. At that time theMeteors were our fastest aircraft, their topspeed beang in the region of 650 knots, justbelow the sound barrier.

All this time, the UFOS were being trackedand logged on the radar screens and theirspeed, when not stationery was around liOOknots. I imagine that further investigation intoAir l\,/linistry reco.ds would confirm this.

ln conclusion I would mention that there weremany other radar operatoF who served withme during my National Service and who, nodoubt, if contacted, could back up myexpeflences.

lf the above narrative is deemed to be worthfurther investigation, I would be able tosupply names, but not the whereabouts, ofseve€l of my National Service colleagues.

Editor rcplies : Thank you very much fotlhis very inlercsting accounl. The BIJFORAResearch team have had an interest inrepotts by pilots and associated crew fotmany years.

It is intercsting that you mention West Ma ingair station. I am reminded of the WestMa ing lncident, which I believe is discussedin some detail in Tin Good's book ,'Above

Top Secret".

Briefly, on 11th March 1gS3 a pilot andnavigator tlying a Vamphe jet near WestMalling obseNed a stationary round tight. Asthey approached it shot towards them attrcmendous speed lhls sounds very muchlike lhe objects you descibe. I bejieve nrecent years the West Malling case has beenreinvestigated by new investigatorc who havethrown doubt on its accuracy.

Dear Editor.

Please be kind enough to print this, it is theonly redress I have. Recently my husbandhas tried getting the lnte.net for me. I wasstaggered to find pages of reports quite takenout of context and hyped up beyond myrecognirion. I did not know of them. nor givemy permission for them.

From time to time people come hereprofessing to be interested in UFOS, or theysay they are from obscure T.V. companiestying to make a UFO programme. ln goodfaith I have assisted and given them some bitsof information, but realise now they are not tobe trusted, particularly the BBC(http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/northwesvauides/wekd/ufos.) They write sensational rubbish, quoting me as their resident UFO expert. Thissort of publicity damages our reputation, yearsof hard work and genuine research andinvestigating. lf you have a news letter orlocal magazine lwould ask all your readersworld-wide to take all this with more than apinch of salt. I would never be a party to suchexaggerated tripe.

Yours sincerely,

Before departure time, we were able to have adrink and a chat in the coat in Boots. The Cherry Tree

John Wickham drove the minibus, and did hisbest to make sure everyone was comfortable. We stopped on the way for people to stretchtheir legs and pay a visit to the toilets, and

then we continued our journey until weeventually arrived at the Cherry Tree pub inBromeswell, near Woodbridge, where we metup with other l\rembers and friends, inctudingLarry Warren, who is well known to mostpeople as one of the key witnesses of thealleged UFO incident in 1980 outside theWoodbridge US Airbase.

The weather was very kind to us and we hadglorjous sunshine virtuaily all day long. ln factit was such a nice day that we sat outside inthe garden of the Cnerry Tree Pub. entoyinga chat and a drink or two. Some of us wereable to use the oppodunity to takephotographs.

After we had all been 'fed and watered' , weboarded the minibls for the short journey tothe Bentwaters Ease Theatre. We were allsu'or sed to lind so nany rew houses be -gbuili on the site of what used to be theBentwaters US Airbase. Larry Warren waswith us on the Nlinibus when we left theCherry Tree PLrb, and as we approached theBentwaters Theatre, he was able to pojnt outto us, where various units of the Base usedto be situated.

The Bentwaters Theatre looked quite new,and it had a pleasant and spacious inteaorWe assembled in a fairly large lecture roomwith ample seating. Coffee, iea and biscuitswere provided for our enjoyment-

Larry Warren (right) explains the events

Larry gave us a brief introductory talk aboutthe Rendlesham Forest Case and about hisposition as a military policeman at that time.He brought us up to date with some of thedetails regarding the alleged IJFO encounter.Larry then ran a video of an in depthdocumentary which had been made about theincident, and that lasted for approximately anhour and a half. After that, we were invited toput questions to Larry, which he answered tothe best of hjs ability.

Eventually the moment we had all beenwaiting for finally arrived; a visit toRendlesham Forest, and to the site of thealleged UFO'landing. We were much laterarriving at the edge of the forest than hadbeen planned, and consequently daylight wasbeginning to fade. However, it didn t delerenthusiastic members from following Larryinto the Forest, as he described and pointedout several important things to us, as wemade our way along a narrow dirt trackthrough the tall trees. Larry moved fairlyquickly, and at times it was djfficult to keep upwith him. He would occasionally stop for a fewminutes to explain something to us about thealleged UFO incident, and if we couldn't heareveMhing, at least jt gave some of the slowermembers a chance to catch up with theothersl I don t think any of us realised justhow far into the Forest we had to go to findthe alleged landing site, and after whatseemed to have been a walk of about twomiles into the Forest, darkness was beginningto fall, and some people were beginning to

think we should be making our way back tothe vehicles, before we were in totaldarkness. Because ofthe height of the treesand their close proximity to each other, looking through the gaps between them, onecould only see a blackness that I thinkDame Edna would have described asSpookyl

Larry fjnally located the site of the allegedUFO landing and stopped to give us moreinformation about the incident. The site wasin a clearing, which is now being used bylocal farmerc. Judy Jaafar was aware of thetime and that it was getting quite dark, andshe told Larry and everyone that she feltthat we should be making our way back, assome people had trains to catch. With that,we headed back, and to our surprise, weseemed to get back to the vehicles muchquicker than we had expected. which wasjust as well, as it was getting very dark bythis time.

Larry travelled with us in the Minibus back toLondon, and it was interesting listening towhat he had to say. lt was a wonder that hedidn't lose his voice, because he must havedone a lot oftalking that day.

We were much later arriving back in Londonthan had been planned, and John Wickhamdid his best to get us back as fast as hecould. John is a good driver and although hewas anxious for our sakes to meet deadlinesfor trains, etc., he put the safety of hispassengers before anything else. Therewere one or two of us who were worried thatwe might miss our last train, and althoughbeing diverted at one point by the police.due to an accident, added extra time to thejourney, I believe we all got home safelyeventually.

Our thanks must go to Judy, John, Larryand all those who were involved inarranging, what turned out to be a mostinteresting and enjoyable day out. Welldone BUFORA.

Roy Rowlands.

AN EVENING WITH THE.OTHER SIDE'?

My attendance at an

lndependent voice physical

mediumship s6ance.

John Wickham

Towards the end of 2003, I was approached ata lecture in London and asked if I would like toattend a s6ance in January 2004. Fotconfidentiality reasons, lwill refer to theperson who invited me as Mrs X.

I constantly seek new experiences in myquest to seek the truth', yes, l am verysceptical and will not believe somethingunless I have absolute proof. Over the years I

have experienced some weird and wonderfulthings, and because of this, I believe thatthere is life after death and that we survave ourphysical body and that we are being'visited'by ghosts/spirits, it is impodant to rememberthis whilst you read through thjs article.

When Mrs X invited me she gave me three 44sjzed pieces of paper to read which listed inquite some detail the 'strange occurrences'that this group had experienced at theseseances dudng the past 10 years, which is thelength of time they have been meeting, normally once each week. The alleged'skange occurrences'are things such as: asudden ice cold breeze filling a room; furfiturelevitation; legs visibly being unscrewed fromtables then being firmly screwed back up;table tilting; things appearing out of thin air(apports), strange mysterious voices beingheard, attendees being touched, the list goeson. lmust admit, lwas quite excited, lwantedto go immediately, I didn't want to wait for awhole month

MY VISIT INTO THE UNKNOWN

On Tuesday 2Oh January 2004, I headed offon a cold wet night to East London. Mrs Xwelcomed me into her home and into healounge, I felt very relaxed in her company, her husband (Mr X) joined us a few minuteslater, we conversed whilst we awaited thelvledium and his wife to arjve, it was going tobe just the five of us for the evening - the tourregulars and me the only'outsjder'.

The lvledium (Mr Y) and his wife (Mrs y)arrived separately, once all were present, weagain chatted for about 5 minutes to.breakthe ice' and get somewhat familiar with eacholher. After this short period, the Mediumlvent upstairs to 'prepare' hirnself, accompanied by lvhs X; I assumed thelvledium needed to be on his own for a shortwhile to enable him to relax so that the Spiritscould use his mind and body to get throughto us. After a further 5 minutes, Mr X, lrrs yand I were asked to go upstairs and take offour shoes prior to going into a small roomwhich upon entering I estimated to beapproximately 13ft x 1oft in size.

Inside this room, there were five lightweightplastic chairs, the kind that are used in thegarden during summertime. One chair wasinside the lvlediums 'Cabinet', the other fourwere facing it; from Ieft to right (see diagram)in between the first and second chair was aportable radio/cassette player situated on asmall table. For those of you that don,i knowwhat a 'Cabinet' is, in this context, it is !E! asolid piece of furniture like that which you findin a kitchen, it is normally a three sidedstructure which is generally draped in a blackcloth which covers the top and all sides, it iswhat the Medium sits within, sometimes withtheir forearms bound with such things asVelcro straps whilst the spirits allegedly takeover their body. On this occasion, in place ofa three sided 'structured' Cabinet, a blackcurtain was draped across two corners of the

ARE PRAYERS TO BE ANSWERED?

l\,4rs X proceeded to say a prayer on behalf ofus all, and thanked spirit for theirmanifestations at ALL previous s6ances andasked if we could have a repeat performance-As soon as the prayer ended, she pressedplay on an audiocassette player, which beganto play old songs from the past, such as 'Roll

New Bufora Journal lssue ]4 Februarv 2005

The music was again turned down, "Yes lcan"lanswered, in the dim blue light I coulddefinitely see the shape of a head protrudingfrom the top right hand side ofthe curtain. Was this a spirit? Not in my opinion, this didn'tprove anything to me, simply because thechair the Medium was sitting on was verylightweight and he could easily have stood upwith his hands stillstrapped to the chair andhis feet still in the same position and leaned tohis left and poked his head foMard behind thecurtain to glve this effecti No proofyet ofanything paranormal, these occ!(ences couldeasily be explained, perhaps if I was a bitmore inexperienced, lmay have been gullibleenough io think it was all down to spirit,............0r perhaps it wasl

Monents later the music was turned up agarn.this continued for approximately 5 minutesthen all of a sudden a voice could be heardcoming from behrnd the cudain The musicwas immediately turned down. The voice wasthat of the Nledium speaking in a Frenchaccent supposedly his own voice being takenover by that of a spirit, it sounded similar tothe actors in the old television sit-com'AlloAllo'l I can't remember the words that werespoken, but I remember being welcomed bythe alleged 'spirit'.

A minute or two later the voice stopped andthe music turned back up. After a short whileanother voice could be heard f.om behind theMediums c!rtain, yet again the music wasturned down. The voice again spoke in aFrench accent and gave the impression it wasthat of a young girl, possibly pre-teens. lt wasvery clear that it was the Mediums own tone ofvoice speaking again in a supposedly Frenchaccent. I do appreciate that if a spirit were touse a l\,4ediums voice box it would still soundsimilar the mediums own tone. Butso far- noproof of anything paranormall The alleged'young girl' spoke for a short while longer, themusic was then turned up again. A minutelate., I was asked if I would like to inspect theVelcro straps, I accepted this invitation, thelights were turned on fully and Idid indeedinspect the straps, they looked to be in the

same position as they were initially. I

returned to my seat.

All lights were again switched off: the onlylight source in the room was that of aluminescent strip whrch was on top of a preceof hadboard, which was resting on top of thesmall chest of drawers to the right of theCabinet. Although the skip was luminescentit did not illuminate anything else. lt was sodark, even when lplaced my hands in front ofmy face I couldn't see them, it was thereforeimpossible for me to delect any movementfrom anyone or'anything else. The musicwas turned up again; nothing happened forabout ten minutes, I must admit, I wasgetting rather bored. I again sat forward in mychair, I could hear the sound ofwhat I

thought was the Velcro straps being rippedopen slowly, I therefore said quite clearly sothat allcould hear me ofwhat lthought I

could hear, I got no response from anyone, the music was not turned down. A fewmoments later MrX asked if lcould feel acold breeze on my legs, I did feel a veryslight breeze, was this the work of a spirit? ltcould have been but to me, it felt likesomeone fanning my lower left leg, this couldhave been done by l,4r or Mrs X or Mrs Y ifthey were working 'with'the Medium.

After a few minutes the music was turned offand the lights switched on, low and behold, abowl of water had mysteriously appeared onthe floor in the middle of the room. Was thisa miracle? Did the spirit put it there? Or wasit ihe Mediums wife or Mr or l\,4rs X who hadpui it there in the dark? So far NO proof, onlycircumstantial evidence.

I was again asked to inspect the Velcrostraps, this time I unfastened both of themand turned them around so that they had the'sticking' part of the strap at the top of theMediums wrist. therefore he could notpossibly reach them with his fingers, whichhe could have easily have done so beforcand which lthought I had clearly heard beingtorn apart.

The lights were switched off again and themusic turned up loud yet again. For whatseemed like an eternity, nothing washappening, no noises and no sound of Velcrostraps being ripped open. Afte. an evenlonger period, a voice came from behind thecurtain. it was the 'little French girl again in'hei French accent saying she was very sorry, she couldn't do anythingl Mr X asked her ifshe woutd like the music turned up louder. ..no reply again he askeo rn a very loud vorce"do you want the music louder?" Ithought thiswas.a very strange request, especially as ithad been repeated Was nothing rappen'rgthe result of me turning the straps around afdlhe Medium therefore being unable to undothe Velcro straps and thus perform histrickery? Was the repeated request to turn themusic up a ploy to drown out the sound of anattempt to rip apart the Velcro straps that thelvledium may have beeo struggling to open? lnmy opinion....yes, I think so.

Eventually, the 'little French girl' spoke, themusic was turned down. and she said shewas disappointed thai nothing had happened, but said she would try one last thing.'She'toldus to watch the luminescent strip which wassituated on top of the srnall bookcase to thengl-t of the cabinet The music was agarnturned up loud, after approximately fiveminltes the music was turned off and thelights switched on and it was apparent that thesmall bookcase had moved to the rightapproximately 10 inches. Again, was this thework of a sprrit? O. was rt the Med um usrnghis left leg to push the small (virtually empty)bookcase along this short distance? lf so, wasthis the furthest he could stretch out his leg topush the bookcase?

I was informed thar this was ihe first ri're inten vears that nothing spectacular hadhappened. As previously meniioned, was thisfailure a result of me turning the Velcro strapsaround so that the Medium couldn't reachthem to undo? ... -..... ...What do you think?

These things that 'occurred' on the njghtmay have been the result of spiritinteraction, but in my opinion, overall, I

thought it was a complete farce, embarrassing to sit and listen to. I am not ayoung child that believes everything lamtold, which is what jt felt like, especiallylistening to adults asking me if I could hearbirds singing and talking to me in excjtedvoices about a bowl of water appearing tn

the mrddle of the tloor and a head pokingout of the curtain and the small bookcasemoving slightly. AlL of which I have easilygiven an explanation for. This is not to saythat all previous seances held here have notbeen genuine- As stated at the beginning, I

have had what I would call many'paranormal' experiences and I believe thatthere is life after death, and as some of youknow, I have captured things (which some ofyou have seen) on camcoader that I woulddeem pa€normal Sadly, on this occasion, I

was left feeling somewhat embarEssed thatpeople had the audacity to attempt to passthese 'events' off as paranormal.

I paid my !10 fee, which I assumed was forlhe cup of iea and slice of cake I had (veryexpensive even compared to the Ritz); I

promptly left after saying my goodbyes.

I wrll probably make a couple of enemiesafter writing this report, but the truth has tobe told, I am nol one for shying away, ifsomething is fraudulent, it needs to beexposed and I will not hesitate to expose it. I

can only report my views on what I

experienced. I will leave the decision to youthe reader to decide whether these'occurrences' were paranormal or not. I willhappily answer any questions relating toihis, please send your questions/commentsto the editor.

lN SEPTEIVIBER 1977. Kate Walker herhusband and two young sons, aged sevenand six years old were returning home toChard from visiting relatives in Yeovil. Theyleft Yeovil at 9.30pm and were driving on theA30 approaching Windwhistle Hill, a couple ofmiles outside of Chard and a very isolatedalea_

As they came to the top of the hill Kate andher family all observed a huge orange lightdiffused by cloud, to their left-hand side and atthe far end of Windwhistle Hill. lt seemed to

be right beside the road, not very high up,and was partially obscured by cloud, but theydid not feel any alarm as there was a powerstation and pylons further along. However, asthey drove nearer to the light, it was easaer toobserve and Kate states it was massive andtotally static and very low and bright. Shedescribes it as being cigar shaped and vastin size, maybe 200-300 feet, and sheestimates the light to be approximately 800-1000 feet above them. As they got closer shenoticed that the pub on the right hand side ofthe road, The Windwhistle lnn , was almost intotal darkness, except for a light in a smallupstairs window.

Kate looked at her watch to check the timeas she felt it was strange that the lnn was indarkness so early as it was very popular andshe remembers wondering why it had closedso early.

The time was 10.10pm, and Kate looked upagain at the light, which was almost on top ofthem by now right beside the road. She feltvery uneasy and told her husband to'put hisfoot down'.

The next thing she was clearly aware of wasseeing a cyclist's headlamp coming the otherway, which seemed to appear from nowhere, and continued on the road to Crewkerne.

Upon arriving home Kate discovered, curiously, that it was now 10.50pm. Theirjourney from Windwhistle Hill should havetaken them only ten to fifteen minutesmaximum, therefore she felt there weretwenty-five to thirty minutes that appeared tobe unaccounted for. As her husband did notremark on this possible time discrepancy,Kate just forgot about it, but on reflectionfinds this odd due to the fact that theirjourney from Windwhistle Hill should haveonly taken a maximum of fifteen to twentyminutes.

A few days after this puzzling incident, Kateand her famiiy were once again making thejourney back to Chard after visiting relatives, and as they were coming over the brow of the

same hill, and about 200-300 yards trom thefirst incident, they saw in front of them on theleft hand verge, lwo people, one whoappeared to be lying down, and the otherstanding Their initial thoughts were thatsomeone had been injured and went to slowdown. when to their astonashment, the personstanding took one step out in front of them:one fcot remained on the grass verge at theroadside and othe. foot was right over thecentre of the roadl. Kate describes the figureas being 'abnormally tall with legs that werehorrendously long and thin' Her husbandswerved to the far side of the road, andaround the figure, and they kept on drivingand did not look back. Ihey all agreed thatihere was no one who could possibly havelegs that long. Kate fully expected to hearsomething about this in the local paper, maybe someone being injured or taken ill onWindwhistle Hill, but she never heard anythingabout an incident there at all. She hascommented to me that it seems very odd inretrospect that they all took these events socalmly and just got on with their lives, andnever discussed it at all.

This story becomes more significant eighteenyears later, when Kate, now remarried and hersons now aged 25 attd 26 years, wereintriguingly finally discussing the events of thatnight. The three of them were together talkiogabout family holidays and the places they useto go together when Kate ask them bothwhether they recalled the orange light theyhad seen beside Windwhistle Hill Thisgenerated a conversation on iheir personalrecollections of this night. Her eldest son,Jeffs recollections refute the fact that theyhad driven under the object. He can recallKate telling his father to 'put his foot down',but says that as he did so'the engine died, and the headlights went out'. His father startedto panic and tried to restad the car, butnothing happened- He goes on to say that atthis point things became very strange andeverything was jn slow motion. He recalls hisfather lunging across the front of the car to thepassenger seat and at the same time therewas a very deep, humming vibration, slow andrhylhmic. The passenger door was open, buthe comments that he couldn't understand why

his Dad lunged across the passenger seatas he had no recollection of his motherbeing in the passenger seat and all memoryof her had gone. He then remembers hisfather punching the dashboard repeatedly.but everything was still in slow motion withno sound He felt frightened and turned toensure his younger brother was okay butTony was looking out of the side windowand seemed excited. but Jeff didn't knowwhy, and his father was pojnting andobviously shouting, but Jeff could not hearany sound and somehow things weredifferent. He then realised his father waslooking past him out ofthe back window andwas terrified. Tony was kneeling on the backseat looking out of lhe rear window andpointing at something saying "Look Jeff, look Jeff'and although Jeff could now hearhim speak.. his lips and rrovements wereagain in slow motion.

Jeff then realised that there was somethingbehind the car and felt almost paralysed byterror. He put his head down and coveredhis face and then for some reason said hehad no memory of Tony either in lhe sameway as he had no memory of his mother,Kate. He felt there was only himself and hisfather in the car. He could then see a whitelight through his fingers so he looked up andthe light was everywhere, inside and outsideof the car. lt was a very bright white lightand he describes it as ... like being insidelightning,... but it didn't hurt his eyes.

His last memory is of seeing a dark shapeoutside the car, beside the window. Hedescribes it as being very lall and befdingtoward the window looking in, and havrngihe impression that the shape was human, although he knew it wasn't, which was thereason he was so afraid. Jeffs next memoryis of looking back at the orange light andseeing the 'headlamp' coming towards themonly a few yards away and he rememberssaying 'where's he come from'. He thenlooked back and the orange light had gone.He explains that initially he onlyremembered seeing the orange light, thecigar shape, and hearing and feeling the

hum and vibration. Through the yearsfragmented memories of that night havereturned, but as no one talked about it he felthe shouidn't mention it. He also recalls justafter the jncident that boys at his school weretalking about strange sightings at WindwhistleHill. Geoffs vague recollections of the incidentare that he did lock the car door when hismother told him to and that he never lookedbehind, but can recollect knowing there werefive black flgures. He also feels. . in his ownwords....that allfour of us were taken and thatwhen something looked in at him through hiswindow, it was his turn to 'go'. This, Kate, emphasises is not just a feeling, but aconviction.

ceoff goes on to say that he seemed to recallthese events more cleady in 1996 when he,his brother and Kate were finally talking aboutthis incident. They were all surprised to findthat they had varying memories of the event, except for their observation of the hugeorange light and the time discrepancy.

I would like to conclude this with Kate'scomments in her letter to me wherc shewrites,..... llind it incredible thinking about itnow, all these years later, ihat we could havedismissed it so casually at the time . We justnever discussed it and life went on as usual. lthas been a great relief to tell someone.

Robert Moore has conducted research intothis particular area in order to establishwhether similar cases have been documentedhere. lnterestingly, there were observations ofunusual lights and an entity over a ten yearperiod at Cricket Malherbie which is within3km north west of Windwhistle Hill.

A newspaper article in the Yeovil WeeklyNews generated a number of unusual reportsfrom arcund this area, some of which I wouldlike to mention here.

Witness A tells of a strange incidentexperienced by her husband, grandson andherself in 1991, which involved what theyperceived as a tall strange figure, which theyclaim was looking through the farm window

followed a few days later by their obser-vations of a 'sauceFshaped' object.

Witness B tells of a similar experience to theWalker family on Wndwhistle Hill in 1975,which happened to her mother and father(now deceased)

Witness C tells of a strange experience onWindwhistle Hill whilst driving a lorry either in1976 ot 1977. He claims that his lorry wentout of control as though by some strangeforce. This took place over a distance ofabout 100 yards or so and then he seemed torecover normal control. He felt as though thelorry was hovering over the road whjlst hewas experiencing this.

Witness D. tells how she and her husbandobserved a very large unidentified object, silver and shaped like a humming top, nearWindwhistle Hill in November 1959. Theywatched it as though 'hypnotised' from about23.00 to 09.00 hrs the next morning and forsome reason felt unable to tell anyone.

Witness E. was employed by WestlandHelicopters at ihe time of Kate Walker'ssightings and feels that the light she saw wasprobably a Sea Krng Helicopter, sporting aNitesun beam, on trials. So... what didhappen to the Walker family on WindwhistleHill in 1977? Astronomical information wouldbe speculalive particularly as Kate cannotremember the date of the sighting, only that itwas late summer and probably September.Another sighting of an unusual flying objectwas observed on 12th September 1977 asrecorded by the Chard, llminster, AxminsterNewspaper. This was described by thewitness as an orange glow, fairly high in thesky and moving quite fast from West toSouth. This may or may not be important inestablishing a date for the Walker family'ssighting, as this sighting may not be relatedto their own observations. However, Kate isconvinced that this would have been thedate of their sighting, particularly as her sonGeoff remembers that this occurred a few

days after his return to school following thesummer holidays.

The moon could have been a candidate formisidentification, so cannot be ruled out andthere have been incidents where the moonhas been reported as a UFO. Venus, l/larsand Jupiter were not candidates as they werenot visible between June and September'1977al22.19hts.

There are power lines, in the area so wereeleckomagnetic fields responsible for thememories of this night due to their effectsupon the human brain as highlighted by AlbertBudden's research? Could this interface beresponsible for this family's perceptions ofthese extraordinary experiences ? JohnHeptonstall interviewed Kate and her son Jeffin 1997 and in his report he writes:

This explanation cannot be ruled out if thetransmitters were there in 1977. lt couldcertainly explain other skange expedencespeople have had locally. For example WitnessC's lorry being taken over and the very subtleeffects an El\,4F event could have on his brainactivity as well as an effect on the motor andsome types of ignition systems being moresusceptible to EMF events than others.

John goes on:

I do not believe that EMF effects will explainmost of the unusual events witnesses haverecorded. For example, the Walker casewould be more difiicult to explain as EMFhallucination although not impossible.

We then of course come to the importantissue of memory retrieval and the problemswith eliciting an objective truth about a strangeevent.

An extract from the British Journal ofPsychiatry on the psychology of memorystates.

It is popularly believed that memory operatesas a video recorder with events being

recorded and stored, awaiting recoveryessentially as they were laid down. Memoryis, however, a much morc complex and lessefficient process. Bartlett showed thatbiographical memory is essentially a re-constructive process in which only someelements of past experience are stored andare retrievable. Far from being recoveredunchanged. he demonskaled that memonesmay be reconstructed and elaborated by allkinds of subsequent influences.

It is obviously becoming more and moreapparent that we need to understand thefunctions of memory and memory retrievalin a much more comprehensive way in orderto realise the fallibility of accurate memoryretrieval speciflcally in relation to anunderstanding of these inexplicableexpedences.

This is of course, significant and it isinteresting that eighteen years later aspectsofthe incident were specifically rememberedin this way by Kate's eldest son, Geoff. Atthe time of the incident Kate rememberedonly some odd things, slch as the pubbeing in darkness except for a light in anupstairs room. Geoff remembers this asbeing the same colour as the orange light onlhe hill. Kate also remembers feelingsomething was wrong and asking herhusband to put his foot down- Furthermore, she feels that there was something strangeabout the time involved in driving tromWindwhistle to their home in Chard. Kate'ssister recalls vividly that Kate specificallycommented to their Mother about thisincident remarkjng on the unusual orangelight and the time discrepancy. The youngerbrother, now in his twenties, did not wish toparticipate in the interview with JohnHeptonstall as he only really rememberedseeing the huge orange light. Furthermore,he did not experience the same sensationsabout this incident as Kate and Jeff.

Kate's vague recollections when discussedeighteen years on were not evident for herimmediately afte rwatds, but during their

t7

Page 20: Bufora Journal - British UFO Research Associationbufora.org.uk/documents/NewBUFORAJournalNo.14Feb2005.pdf · her readlng of Donald Keyhoe's book have in her recollections? What influence

convercation Kate found she had vaguememories and a dreamlike recollection of

. The engine cutting out

. Screaming at the boys to lock theircar doors

. Something looking through her sidewindow

. Five black figures walking up to thecar from behind

. Her husband lunging to grab herand to pull her back----andthen... nothing

With regard to the second incident, all fourpeople in the car remembered this. I spokewith Kate again recently and asked why theydid not stop in a remote area like this when itappeared someone was hurt and the figureappeared to be flagging them down to stop.Kate tells me that she djd not feel guilty at allabout not stopping because 'she knewsomething was wrong and the flgure did notlook like a normal human being,' Her husbandmade the decision not to stop and had toactually swerve around the figure right over tothe other side of the road.

Two to three months after their discussion andwith these recollections on her mind Katecontacted BUFORA and telephoned me in thesummer of 1996.

So, what did happen that night? That ofcourse is the million-dollar questionl lt isinteresting lhat there were two perceivedunusual events within a few days of eachother. I have spoken with Kate on thetelephone several times since she reportedthese experiences as well as communicatingby mail in recording this case.

John Heptonstall conducted his interview withKate and her eldest son in 1997 anddocumented this interview in a subsequentreport to BUFORA. lt is unfortunate that Kateand her family have had no contact with her

husband at that time so he c€dainly is notaware that Kate has contacted BUFORA.Furthermore, this is a sensitive family matterand therefore it is unlikely that a BUFORAinvestigator could talk with him at any futuredate in orde. to obtain coroboration and hisversion of events. However, Kate hopes thatat some stage she may be able to talk withher ex-husband about the events that night, which would possibly add some vitalinformation and create some furtherunderstanding of the Walker family'sexperiences during both nights. Johncomments too that something happenedwhich caused both fear and concern for thefamily.

It appears that there is a history of oddoccurrences in this area and certainlyWindwhistle Hill is steeped in the traditionalfolklore of strange lights, visions and figureswith ghostly highwaymen and gallopinghorses. Iantalising stuff, but is there anysubstance to all of this? Well, none that canbe evaluated in order to give any deflnitiveanswers.

Kate is a lady, who appears to have a lot ofcommon sense as well being a sensitive andcaring mother within a loving family. She hasalso had more than her fair share oftragedies in the years since theseexperiences and wants to know if there areany answers as to what happened on thosetwo occasions. She has tried to conduct herown research into this and has now returnedto Somerset permanently which will enableher to carry out her own research. She is notprone to fantasy nor has she beenspecifically interested in the subject ofanomalous and unexplained events. ln herown pragmaric way she is chasing elusiveanswers to questions about what may or maynot have occurred during those two nightsand is open minded about taking on boardthe varying theories of possibilities. Howeverit is essential that we understand the crucialissue here, which is that both Kate and herson Jeff feel absolutely that somethingoccurred on those two nights that defies arationalexplanation.

This case is still under investigation, but it is

t8

Page 21: Bufora Journal - British UFO Research Associationbufora.org.uk/documents/NewBUFORAJournalNo.14Feb2005.pdf · her readlng of Donald Keyhoe's book have in her recollections? What influence

noteworthy that there was a second incidenton this hill a few days later. There are farmore questions than answers here and manyproblems with this report, not least of whichare the twenty-three yeafs that have lapsedsince it occurred and the major problemsconnected with objectave and accuratememories from that night-

It is remotely possible that Kate and her familysaw something that could have beenexplained if followed up at the time and theperceived anomalies of the pub being closed, the time discrepancy and other apprehensronswere due lo the kigger of the huge orangelight being perceived as a uFO. The addedeffects of this remote and isolated area atnight time, may have further induced somekind of fear and unease for the family Eventhe second incident of the bvo figures by theroadside may have been some kind ofmisperception due the possible unconsciouseffects of the previous incident. These arepossibilities but many years on would bedifficult to prove as a possible cause.

What of the memories so many years later, apattern that has certainly been evident whenlooking at these type of experiences, wherepeople claim they can remember more detailand clarity abolt a long forgotten incident. lsthis because of the imagery that has beenabsorbed into our consciousness creatingperceived and subjective models to explainwhat happened... and let us not forget theother influences of EM fields that may havecontributed here.

Jason Eastwood, gives more informationabout the area after taking photographs lastyear. He states that the area around the lnn isdeserted and surrounded by fields andwoodland on all sides. The weather can movein on the area very quickly and soon cover thearea with dense fog. Power cables run alongthe main road and past the pub. Next door tothe lnn there is a building full of electronicequipment.

Across the next field is a transmitter andanother building with electronic equipmentwith a sign stating the site is owned byVodaphone. On the opposite side of the road

is an underground water exchange, whichlooks like a WWll bunker and is not visiblefrom the road- Obviously some of this willnot have been there in 1977. I visited thearea in 2000 and confirmed Jason'sinformation. lt was also interesting that theroad is quite narrow with a small grassverge on either side, so when Kate and herfamily saw the figure lying on the road andother 'abnormally tall'figure step out theywould have been very close to the scene ofthis odd event.

These are, as I say possibilities, but one hasto then understand that Kate and her sonsfeel skongly that they have curiousmemones of very unusual and disturbingevents that night....fragmented though theymay be ln my contacts with Kate, I havealways found her to be someone who verybadly wants some answers to two incidentsthat she cannot understand, even all theseyears on. We should not force our owninterpretations upon this family, sexperiences without fully !nderstanding thewider picture of these remarkable humanjourneys and therefore we have enormousdifficulties, as there are a vast sea oftheories out there which try to explain whatmay or may not have happened that night.

Questions about the Walker family'sexperiences and the melting pot of otherslike them are becoming more defined andvisible as people describe an ever-increasing number of extraordinary humanexperiences. These encounters encompassall manner of amazing tales such as out ofbody experiences, near death experiences,after-death communication, alienencounters, missing time. visions, timewarps and so on. lt is my belief that thesecurious reports remain very much humanissues. Whether or not they are connectionsto other worlds outside our view of reality, orwhether these experiences arepsychological in nature, or whethgr they arecreated by natural phenomena and earthenergies that we have yet to understand andharness, OR whether they are powerfulelectromagnetic fields interracting with the

Brain OR other functions of consciousness,OR some of these things OR all of thesethings, OR none of these things, it is crucialthat we try to grasp a small concept of theessence of what may be happening and asthe Roger Penrose asserts ...the ultimatemystery of existence is lhe humanconsciousness.

To conclude, I leave you all with thesequestions.

What is consciousness? ls it only a function ofthe brain/rnlnd interface? Was an externalsource responsible for the experiences of theWalker family? Did this source create analtered state of consciousness leading to thisfamily's personal understanding of thesepeculiar events- Or was there somelhing elsehappening, which for some reason on theseparticular nights, in this specific area, acc€ssed doorways to those other worlds, which appear to be real and yet which are notreal in the physical sense and therefore arenot occurring in our perception of the physicalworld? Does this make them any less real tothe experiencer and do we have any way toexplain these experiences within the limitedcapacity of our language and the powerfulimagery and culturally visual models that weaccess in trying to comprehend ihese mysticalevents. What are the true nature of thesestGnge human experiences and do they havea real value for us in terms of our spiritualjourneys and encounters?

I would like to extend my deepest thanks andappreciation to Kate Walker, Jeff and Tony forallowing BUFOM to document theirexperiences on Windwhistle Hill in 1977.

Should any reader feel that they have anyfurther information that may relate to theseincidents, could you please feel free to contactme a t stbeather:d77Gaol. com.

Both Kate and Jeff would appreciate anyinformation regarding these events that couldshed some light on what may have happenedduring those two nights.

Light Work

Steve Gamble

After investigation UFO repofts that canngt beexplained tend to fall into two camps. Thereare the contactee and abductee type repoisthen many of the rcmainder are various typesof lights in the sky. This is an adicle thatorigina y appeared in BUFORA Bu etin 12. Iam repeating it here because to a ceftainextent it echos the theme of my editorial aboutlooking at places where there are repeatedUFO repofts.

ln Bulletin 1l I wrote a short article aboutresearching Ball of Light phenomena [1]whichwas an inkoduction to the rerun of NormanOliver's work on the Harston sightings I2l.Thanks to the several people who havecommented on this.

The first incident mentioned in Norman'sarticle concerned strange lights seen over arecently harvested field near the village ofNeMon in Cambridgeshrre. The mainwitness, l\,4ichael Bradford described a smallwhite ball of light appearing almost from underhis feet then moving across the field with azig-zag motion. Over the period of a fewminutes about ten more of these BOLS wereseen. Brian James, a member of theBUFORA Research team, recently pointed outto me the similarity of these lights to the smallBOLS frequently reported near crop circles.Mr Bradford also states that the lights weremoving about six feet above the ground. Thattoo seems to be consistent with the lightsseen associated with crop circles.

It is not clear at this stage if the lights areassociated in some way with crop circles ornot. Given that many, if not most (somewould say all) crop circles are hoaxes, maybethe lights are just a phenomenon that hasalways existed and we only see them nowassociated with things like crop circlesbecause these are the only places we arelooking. I remember several different closeencounter witnesses telling me that following

their 'main' UFO experience they frequentlywatched the skies and had seen smallglobes of light on a number ot occasions.Brian James also mentions that strangelights are frequently reported aroundRendlesham Forest in Suffolk.

lam also indebted to Brian James formaking me aware of the article by MichaelGreen and Jim Lyons [3]. This is primarilyconcerned with repeated apperance of cropcircles in fleld adjacent to Sibson airfieldnear Peterborough. However it contains avery interesting section on strange lightsalso seen repeatedly in the area. Greenand Lyons also look at the geology of thearea and note that the area is adjacent tothe River Nene. The other area I mentionedin my Bulletin 11 article was the area aroundLittle and Great Houghton on the outskirts ofNo(hampton. This area is also part of theNene valley. One priority now is to examinethe geology of the Little/Great Houghtonarea to compare it to the Sibson area.lnterestingly, Newton (mentioned above) isalso on a river, a tibutary of the River Cam.

ln the Little/Great Houghton area there aretwo particularly interesting sightings wherethe witness describes small Balls of Lightseen near the ground [4]. ln the firstincident, a young man was travelling fromNorthampton to Bedford at about 2am, onrounding a bend he saw a bright white lightcoming towards his car. ln the secondincident, the witness was riding hismotorbike and sidecar along a lane nearGreat Houghton. The engine of the bike cutout and the lights failed. He noticed a smallglobe of light hovering about three feetabove the ground in a field nex to the road. After the light disappeared he was able torestad his motorcycle and continue on his

As Dr Hynek said on a number of occasions'there seem to be no patterns in the LJFOdata, where there are patterns science canenter'. Perhaps in the Ball of Lightphenomena we are starting to see pattgrns.Robert Bull has pointed out that withinCambridgeshire, an area where he has

cafiied out many investigations, there seem tobe places where there are multiple reportsover a period of time.

ln the period 1979/80 many reporls of strangehghts were collected trom around Harstonbecause Michael Bradford was a BUFORAmember in the area who actively sought outUFO reports. But one of the main incidentshe was involved concerned an objecl seennear Barley on the Cambridgeshire/Helrford-shire border One of the cases that Robedinvestigated mo.e recently (October'1997) [5]also collcerned multiple lights seen in theBarley area. Also mentioned in the SummerNewsletter is a report from 12 July 1998where a motorist saw eight to ten skangellghts hovering over as fleld near the junctionof the A10 and 4505 roads. This is two orthree miles from Barley and about five mibssouth of Harston.

We seem to be building up very rapidly acatalogue of areas where there are reports ofrepeat phenomena. However, as I statedabove perhaps these hotspots for the BOLphenomena are now becoming recognisedbecause these are the areas in which we look.lf we study other areas, would we also flndreports of the BOL phenomena? Theprogramme of skywatches organised by PhilipWalton goes some way to helping to resolvethis question. By putting groups of observersout across the country at specified limes givesthe chance of picking up accurately recordedobsetuaiions.

Howeve., it has to be admitted thal thechances of seeing an object at any location ona speciiic night are very slim. Another waymefibeF can help with this project is to watchou{ for reports in their local paper or on radioand TV which they can send in to BUFORA.Many local newspapers maintain an archive ofpast issues. lf any members have the time tovisit their local newspapers to look through theback issues, that would be extremely helpful.

BIBLICAL UFOS

Robert Bull

(This afticle oiginally appeared in CUFOGNews numberg)

Accounts of aerial phenomena in the Bibleare usually inrerpre{ed as rel.giousapparitions or visions, but are interpreted bysome as possible evidence of exkaterrestdalvisitors in ancient times- An extension of thisinte.pretation holds that Christianity andprobably all major religions are based onvisits by extraterrestrials. Biblical passagesfrequently quoted in support of 'ancientastronaut' theories are:

Book of Exodus (c. 1400 BC)

There are numerous references in the Bookof Exodus (Moses leading the children oflsrael out of slavery in Eqypt) to the Lordgoing before them as a 'Pillar of Cloud' byday and a 'Pillar of Fire' by njght. lt is alsospeculated that the'pillai UFOS caused theRed Sea to part, took offensive measuresagainst the pursuing Egyptians, and causedmanna to fallfrom the skies when Moses andhis people faced starvation. (Recentarchaeological excavations in Egypt have

failed to find any evidence that the Exodusactually took place.)

Exodus also records l\Ioses as building theArk of the Covenant, following preciseinstructions given by cod. Only divinelyappointed persons were to carry the Ark, intowhich sacred objects were placed. A walntngis given in the Book of Numbers that anyonewho touched any of the holy objects woulddie.

The second Book of Samueltells of a mannamed Uzzah who reached out his hand tosteady the Ark when it was shaken by oxenGod struck him dead on the spot. Author Erichvon Deniken contends that the Ark was aradio used to communicate between Earthand the extraterrest.ials. and that Uzzah waskilled by an electrical charge that had built up.Others point out that those carrying the Ark(using gold covered poles) would also havebeen electrocuted, and that in any case Godwas able to tell Moses to build the Ark withoutneeding a radio.

Ezekiel (dh Century AC)The prophet Ezekiel reports seeing 'flyingwheels' and four'living creatures', 'everyonehad four faces, and every one had four wings'.(Ezekiel 1:1-28). There are other references to'a great cloud with brightness all around it','fire flashing forth continually , and in the midstofthe fire, as it were gleaming bronze'. (Criticspoint out that Ezekiel specifically stated thathe was describing religious visions.)

ElijahSome say that Elijah was taken for a ride in aflying saucer. Chapter 2 ofthe second Book ofKings states that 'And it came to pass, as theystillwent on and talked, that, behold, thereappeared a chariot of fire, and horses offire.and parted them both asunder; and Elijahwent up by a whirlwind into heaven.'

EnochThe second Book of Enoch describes Enochas being visited by two unusual-looking menof very great height. Enoch is taken on a tourofthe seven tiers of heaven, and is given

secret knowledge by God. Enoch claimsthat although the trip only seemed to take afew days for him, centuries had passed onEarth when he returned. Proponents of theancient astronauts theory have a field dayon this, claiming that Enoch was actuallytaken on a tour of the stars at light speed_

JacobJacob had a vision ofAngels ascending anddescending a ladder set up between Earthand heaven. Some believe that Jacob mayhave observed ufonauts climbing up anddown the boarding ladder of a large ftyingsaucer (Modern aliens have dispensed withlhe ladder, and simply float up and down.)

JonahJonah was swallowed by a whale anddisgorged three days later, alive and well.onto a beach. Or was he taken on board alarge Unidentified Submarine Object, theamphibious craft of extraterrestrial visitors?

Saint PaulPaul (ust plain Paul in those days) wasconverted to Christianity while on the .oad toDamascus- Not far from the city, a lightflashed from the sky, knocking Paulto theground. Paulthen heard Jesus speaking tohim He remained blinded by the flash forthree days. Some ufologists contend thatPaulwas struck by a beam of light from aUFO, and that his subsequent personalitychange was similar to that undergone bypresen!day close encounter experiencers.

The Star of BethlehemThe celestial body, described io the GospelAccording to St Matthew, which the threewise men from the East to the birthplace oiJesus in Bethlehem. lnterpreted as amiracle by theologians, as a comet byastronomers, and by ufologists, who pointout that the object must have been very lowto be seen to come to rest over a 'certainbuilding'in Bethlehem. as a UFO.

George Adamski Revisited.

Steve Gamble

This is an updated versian of an adicle thatfitst appearcd in BUFORA Bu etin No 2 inApril 1998

Many people become nterested in UFOSbecause of lhe popular view that UFOS areextraterrestrial spacecraft. Only tirne will tellwh,.ther this view will ultlmately turn out to beco(ect ln recent years the Exka-TerrestrialTheory has fallen out of favour with manyresearchers There are something Iike fortydifferent theories that have been proposed toexpLain UFO reports. The Exka-TerestrialHypothesis or ETH is but one of these. Giventhat there is little hard evdence to suppod anycf these lheories above any other, the ETHshould at least be given equal consideration. The real beauty of the ETH is ils simpLicity. The basic theory is if mankind can ventureinto space, then beings from elsewhere in theuniverse could also venture into space andwith technology not too far rn advance ofwhatwe have now might visit the eaath.

The real evidence that would prove the ETHwould be the recovery of part or a wholeSpacecraft or the recovery of an Extra-Terrestrial being for study. Unfod!nately thereports that either of these events hasoccurred eilher turn out to be hoaxes or it issiated that the evidence has been taken awayby government agencies So the bottom lineis thal no relable evid"rce of rhis natlrre isavailable fo. civilian researl^l^e's ro st-oy.

There is a second potential line of evidencewhich could be considered Thar evtdence isthe statemenis of the contactees. These area small group of people who say that theyhave not only seen the operators of strangemachines which they believe may bespacecraft, but they have actually spoken tothese operators. ln many cases thecontactees report that they have been shownaround lhese craft and in some cases iheyreport that they have been taken on tripsaboard these craft.

Perhaps the most famous of thesecontactees was George Adamski. N4y

interest rn contactee reports was rcawakenedseveral years ago when lsaw a videodocumentary about contactees produced byMichael Heseanann. This inc, uded longsegmenls of interview with Desmond Leslie.

Leslie had been a fighter pilot in World War2. Desmond Leslie had written one of thefirst books about UFOS when Adamskiapproached the publishers with a manuscriptabout his LJFO encounters . So Adarnskismaterial was published alongside Leslies inFlying Saucers Have Landed.

George Adamski

Adamski was born in Poland on 17th April1891. He moved to the United States withhis parents when he was aged two. Adamskioften used the tit e Professor, although thereis no evrdence tlat he held any academcqualjfication which would entitle him to usesuch a designation. He joined the US Armyin '1919 where he stayed for several years.ln the early 1940s Adamski was living on theslopes of lvlount Palomar and working at alocal hamburger stall. Around 1946, he wrote

a science fiction novel called pioneers ofSpace. Some people who have seen thisbelieve that it has a number of similarities tosome ofAdamski's later contactee claims

Adamski reported a number of UFO sightings, which he said started in 1946, and tatei anumber of contactee experiences. He also tooka number of photographs of UFOS over severatyears. These photographs included small diskshaped craft said to be about 30 feet indiameter (the classic Flying Saucer, sometimesrefeffed to as a Scout craft) and larger cigarshaped mothercraft from which the drsksoperated.

On Thursday 20th November 1952 Adamskiwent to the desert near Blythe, Californiaaccompanied by several friends: George HuntWilliamson, Betty Wi iamson. Mr & Mrs AtBailey, Lucy Mccinnis and Atice K. We s.(Following Adamski's death on 23rd Aprit 1965Alic€ Wells formed the George AdamskiFoundation, a world-wide organisatjon todistribute information about Adamski and hiswork.) The object of the trip was to observeUFOS. After they had spotted a cigar shapedobject Adamski left the rest of the group toinvestigate a small canyon.

ln this canyon Adamski said he came across abeing near to a landed Flyjng Saucer. Adamskisaid that this being communicated with himlsing a mjxture of telepathy and sign language. He described the being as a sun tannedCaucasian man about 5 feet 6 inches tall withshoulder length sandy coloured hak. Adamskiestimated the age of the man to be 28 yearsold. The being told Adamski that he had comefrom Venus. During their meeting the beingasked Adamski if he could take away one of hisphotographic plates. Several weeks laterAdamski saw a saucer hovering near his homeat Palomar Gardens. He said a hand came outand dropped the film holder to him. When theplate was developed it contained an image witha number of hieroglyphs. (tmmediately springsto mind that some of the wreckage associatedwith the Roswell incident is also described asbearing strange hierogtyphs.)

After the being and the spacecraft had left,Adamski noticed that the being had leftfootprints in the sand. When he wasrejoined by his colleagues, one of theirnumber ceorge Hunt Williamson was ableto make a plaster cast of the footprints.(This was remarkable forward ptanning tobring plaster of Paris - just think of the la.genumber of UFO witnesses who say.l had acamera in my bag or in my car and I justdidn't think to use it!')

Following the first encounter Adamski had anumber of later meetings withextraterrestrials who he said includedvisitors from Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Hea,so later told of being ta^en for trips onboard these flying saucers. Adamskjdescribed cities on the far side of the Moonas well as lakes and forests. John Spencer(1991) states about Adamski, ,The mostobvious problem is that science hasovertaken many of his claims, in the waythat we know Venus will not supporthumanoid life; so we now know thatAdamski could not have stepped on to thesurface of the gas giant planets - if theyhave surfaces".

Adamski said that he saw snow cappedmountains on the far side of the Moon. Butthe conventional wisdom for many yearswas that there was no water on the moon, and if there is no water how could you havesnow. Well a few years ago NASAannounced that the Clementine spacecrafthad found traces of water on the moon.Only traces of water, not great lakes orsnow as described by Adamski, but nonethe less water. I am not saying Adamskiwas ight, much of what he said goesagainst what we currently take as fact, butas our knowledge increases some of thenew thinking seems to fit better with hiswork than the ideas they replaced.

The BUFOM Journal for Spring 1969 (Vot2, No 8, page 12) carries a news item aboutthe Adamski photographs. 'According to aletter from the U.S. Department of Air Force, addressed to the Hon. Lloyd Meeds anddated 26th January 1968, photo anatysts atWright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, have

25

Page 28: Bufora Journal - British UFO Research Associationbufora.org.uk/documents/NewBUFORAJournalNo.14Feb2005.pdf · her readlng of Donald Keyhoe's book have in her recollections? What influence

determined that the Adamski prints containstimula caused by a tobacco humidor andthree ping pong balls." lt is followed by acomment by John Cleary-Baker, the editor ofthe Journal, "l would myself have supposedthat the controversial photographs were of alargea object, perhaps a marine mooring buoy. One more puzzle amongst the many whichconfront us in connection with the late GeoroeAdamski".

lvlargaret Sachs ('1981) states that researcherFrank Edwards came to the conclusion thalAdamski's photograph of the disk shapedScout Craft was noihing more that the top of acanister type vacuum cleaner made in 1937-But astronomer Donald Menzei had alreadyidentified it as a chicken brooder which hadthree infrared bulbs on the underside I amoften accused by people of being toosceptical, that may be true. But the mark ofthe true sceptic is that they distrust all claimsequally. I would love to believe these claimsthat Adamski's photographs have beenideniified, but for each claim to identify thethlng Adamski photographed as being adifferent and widely available object justdoesn't hold water. Adamski's pjctures arenot some distant fuzzy object but relativelyshalp fairly close objects. lf researchers aregoing to identify them as fakes then surely, these above any other pictures, they shouldall be able to identiiy as the same object andproduce for me to see.

Shortly before his death Adamskiwas visitingMadeline Rodeffer at her home in SilverSpring, Maryland. Betweeo 3pm and 4pm onthe afternoon of 26th FebrLrary 1965 Adamskitook 8mm movie film using Rodeffer's cameraof, what he had earlier described as, a scoutcraft flying in front of Rodeffer's house. Therewere also other witnesses present.

Adamski had told a number of friends that heexpected to be reincarnated after his death.

On 24th April 1965 (the day after Adamskidied) Ernest Bryant had a contacteeexperience at Scoriton in Devon. One of thebeings he encountered said his name wasYamski. Some people believe this to be a

corruption of the word Adamski and at firstlook seems to support his rcincarnationclaim. The Scoriton affair was investigatedprimarily by Norman Oliver and EileenBuckle, and is a complex story. Recently,Norman Oliver has published two articles inthe Journal discussing the case. Hepresents evidence that much if not all of thereport was made up, possibly with thecollusion of some of the other investigatorsinvolved. So we must discount Bryant'sevidence as supporting Adamskis re-incarnation clalm.

Adamski has been classed as a fraud bymany researchers. Unfortunately many ofthe more spectacular evenis that Adamskispoke about were only witnessed by him.How much of it was just a good yarn and howmuch was kue we will probably never know.As the sceptics are quick to remind us -people making extra-ordinary claims shouldproduce extra-ordinary evidence. So is thereany evidence to suppod Adamski's claims?Well if we ignore the testimony of the peoplewho went to the desert with him in Novembea'1952 and the witnesses to the filming atRodeffer's house (in both cases they wereassociates of Adamski so cannot beconsidered independent) I can think of twothings.

When he travelled into space on board theflying saucer he described the craft beingfollowed through space by lots of little tinyglinting particles

'ike flreflies. When John

Glenn went into space in 1962 he describedthese little fireflies foilowing his spacecraft -just as Adamski had done ten years beforelThese pafticles have subsequently beenidentified as ice crystals and paint flakesshed by Glenn's spacecraft. But how couldAdamski have known about lhem nine yearsbefore Gagarin's historic first flight?

The second thing I believe could supportAdamski's claims are the photoqraphs takenby Stephen Darbishire. ln February 1954Stephen and his cousin Adrian IVIyers wereout near Coniston when they saw and tooktwo photographs of an object similar to one of

26

Adamski's scout craft. At the time Stephenwas aged 6. Leonard Cramp took bothAdamskis and Darbrshires photographs ofscout crafl and used onhographic proleclion toproduce vtews of the objects from Ihe sameangle. The proportions of the two craftseemed to match. Later Darbishire issued astalement sayrng he faked the photos, thenlater sayrng that he had not faked them buthad issued the earlier statement to get peopleoff his back

lf Darbishrre had faked his photographs therthal in itself would have been a good feat fora six year old brrl to match the proportions ofAdamskis craft so well wouid have beenremarkable. Of course. by now Adamski andDesmond Leslie s book had been publtshed rnthe UK. so that could have been thernspiration d Darbishire s ptctures really arefaked.

Following the release of photographs taken byone of the early Russian space probes of lhefar side oi the lvloon, Adamskr was asked howcome the did not show the cities and lakes hehad described. He is supposed to havereplied that the Russians had doctored thepictures to mislead the Americansl Given therecent claims in some of the UFOlogical pressthat the pictures ofthe manned Moon landingsare faked - maybe Adamski wtll be provedright after all!

lf we have lo have a bottom line lguess itwould be that much of what Adamski saidcould be faked or Ihere is just not supporlingevrdence However there are parls wherethere are unanswered questions or there areother witnesses. The case against Adamski isnoi proven beyond doubt But then again, thecase for Adamski is not proven either. Giventhere are significant doubts it would be veryrisky to try to build too much upon Adamski s

I need to write this down as it's really gettingon rny neryes_ lt's about memories of wakingup and seejng droplets of blood on the pillow, which appeared to be coming from my nose. This was a recurring memory. The thingabout this, though - the thing that rea yconfuses me - is that I remember it being ona "bed" in line with a "window"; whereas mybed had always been on the left side. Therewas definitely a pillow, though, so what couldthis mean? lt doesn't make sense, I don, tthink. I dismissed this apparent memory ofmy bed being in the "wrong" position (in thesame position as the memory involving thebeing who "showed me 'the door"') but itcontinues to titillate and eat away at lo9ic. Didthis also, then, occur in that "other place"? Dothey have pillows there, or do they imitate oursurroundings? How many times, I wonder, have I woken up in the "wrong bed"?!

Recently, I wrote a poem about that unusual"dream" which l was told was "The place ofblue light"...

The Place of Btue LiBht

There's a place I've been to,It came "out of the blue",

That Place they call ,,Blue"

(Btue Light)

Have you been to that place? You know that place, surely? That place they call"Btue.. '

"The Place of Blue Light"

It's a place we allgo to,Go during the night

It's the place they ca "Btue..""The Place of Blue Light"

I remember that place,That place in the night,

A strange man therc, who said:"The Place of Blue Light"

(l can feel them gefting closer now...)

Did he take you therc,That man with the wand?

And what did he show youIn that place bathed with light?

Did he show yau what I saw,That naked child on the ftaor?

ln that dim but beautiful tight,Where lay the huddled child I knew

That child of the night,Of the

Place af Blue Light

This may sound silly. I mean, maybe it wasjust me in my sleep. but when I gor up tnismorning I noticed that my pyja.na topseemed unusually tight. When I looked, I

saw that it was on back to front (buttonsdone up). lraybe I took it off in my sleepand put it back on the otherway, but I

cannot remember. ln any case, when lwentto the toilet I became aware that my pyjamabottoms were also wrong way round. Moreover, I do not remember any of this, and have not been known to sleep-waik atall.

I also noticed some bleeding frcm my ears:there appears to be a row of scab marks as ifmy ears had been poked many times with aneedle in a straight line. This was in my rightear. I don't know how any of this happened, but it has definitely happened before.

Tuesdav 23'd

I've been thinking about my unusual 'sleepinghabits", and what they could mean.

Even before the 1992 bedtime visitation I

would sleep at the end of the bed where I

wouldn't feelthe urge to "scan" the doorwayfor possible intruders. On that fateful night, when I turned over, I had the shock of my lifewhen I felt that foreign hand under mine. Now, my p.eferred sleeping position is to layon the side ofthe bed where I can seeeveMhing. I expect I am trying to avoid re-experiencing the unexpected again.

I must also have the door open, though I don'tblame myself for that one either. lt probablyresults from those childhood events (8-11)with the door.

I was wonder,ng, where might I feel mostsafe?

Answer: Som€wher€ high, maybe on the tip of a

mountain, with all the trees chopped down aroundme, allowing me to clearly s€e what might becoming-for miles around.

Gary has provided the following write upabout his lecture and interest :

"l have been fascinated by the subject ofUFOS for 29 years since a chrtdhoodexperience when aged 15.

Between 1983-89 I served in the RAF as apolice officer before joining the BritishTransport Police. I have now over 15 yearsservice, the last 11 of which as a DetectiveConstable.

During the mid nineties I discovered UFOlvlagazine and became and avid reader. Asthe years passed I felt more and morefruskated that the media was ignoring theevidence of pilots and radar operators whenthere appeared to me as a police officerample evidence to point to the EThypothesis. I began to speculate on how I

could best become involved in research.

Given my work schedule I decided tospecialise in the area of police officers andtheir UFO sightings. With the support of UFOMagazine I launched the PRUFOS poticeDatabase in January 2001. Since then I'veamassed 122 cases involving 302 policeofficers dating back to 1950's.

On a personal note I am divorced and havetwo adult daughters aged 18 and 26."
