We’re residents of the East Thames Barking and Dagenham Foyer and we’ve been taking part in the Lloyds TSB Money for Life Challenge. It’s all about having better money management skills.

For us one of the issues is having a healthy diet on a tight budget. So we took part in workshops to learn how to cook and eat well without spending too much.

We managed to produce a buffet on a budget for 40 of our fellow foyer residents on a budget of just £1.50 per person. Thanks to the Money for Life Challenge, we now realise that there are a lot of places to get good deals, by using coupons and buy one get one free items.

We hope you enjoy our recipes and tips.

- Vivian, Shantelle, Troy, Katie and Falone

3. Use leftovers to create meals

4. Resist temptation and impulse buys – supermarkets try and tempt us to spend – especially near the check out – don’t buy what you don’t need

5. Never shop when you’re hungry – you will spend more

DON’TDO, Drop a brand level – try the basics

or value brands

, Use supermarket’s club cards i.e. Tesco’s Club card or Sainsbury’s Nectar card to save points

, Go online for money saving vouchers and specials

, Buy discounted items close to their sell by date – but make sure you use them by their use by date

, Go to your supermarket close to closing time to pick up some bargains

, Go shopping with friends and buy bulk

, Take a packed lunch to work or college

, Try baking your own bread – it’s not hard and much cheaper and healthier

, Be seduced by better packaging – it doesn’t mean better products

, Waste leftovers – cook enough for a couple of days or freeze some meals to enjoy later

, Take your credit card shopping – research shows we’re more careful when spending cash

, Go to the shops if you don’t need to – try to avoid the temptation

, Ask yourself ‘what’s the cheapest’ – ask ‘what can I afford?’

, Forget that small amounts add up fast. By cutting a £2.50 coffee per day you could save more than £600 per year
