Life lessonsGrant offers insights for prom about drinking and driving

I’m one of the few privileged that got to experience this. Now I’m aware of what happens when you go to jail and the effect that drunk driving has. It was an intense experience, especially watching the scene unfold in front of you,” explained April Am-ajoyi about the Every 15 Minutes experience.

Juniors and seniors were lucky enough to have a two-day event that taught them the consequences of drinking and driving. Assistant principal Ms. Ruby Na-varro, with help from several staff members and students, coordinated the event. “It wasn’t something you ‘sign up for,’ you were selected. Picked based on the way teachers and faculty think your impact on the campus is. Kind of like the big voices of the school,” said Iman Williams. There were 23 kids selected to participate. “During the process I felt like it was another performance, but when it came down to the first day of being ‘reaped’ out of my classroom by the ‘grim reaper’ everything felt completely real. It was terrifying,” she continued. “We were hand picked from teachers to get our roles. It was sad going inside the morgue and seeing all those dead bodies and knowing your life could end at any-time. My role in the program was being reaped with the other students.” said Nayeli Sandoval. Alejandro Mariscal said “We had auditions for the certain parts with the accident. Some acts were pretty re-alistic for example, Cynthia she really got into it and she broke down crying and was screaming inside the class-room.” For many of the students, it was a difficult role to play and the hardest part was watching their parents during the mock funeral. “At the end of the ceremony, I felt really emotional. Even though the situation wasn’t real, I felt bad for mak-ing my mother go through that,” Miguel Parga confesses. “It’s crucial to waste the time you have here. Tell

the people you love, you love them. And do not drink and drive, ever, obviously,” said Noah Johnson. It does take a village to raise kids, and there were many people and organizations needed to bring to-gether this two day project together. Ms. Ruby Navarro would like to thank the following community supporters with our Every 15 Minutes event: San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Fontana Sheriff Station, California Highway Patrol San Bernardino, San Bernardino County Friday Night Live, San Bernardino County Fire Department, San Bernardi-no Coroner’s Office, American Medical Response (AMR), Central Detention Center, Loma Linda University Med-ical Center, KVCR/FNX, Nickelodeon Pizza, Shakey’s Pizza, Mi Cocina Restaurant, Hampton INN Suites, Mer-cy Air, Stater Bros., GT Imprints, Colton Joint Unified School District Print Shop, Pepe’s Towing, Green Acres Mortuary, and Bloomington 1 Florist. Sergio Zaldivar said “It was pretty scary think-ing about death and knowing how your friends are go-ing to be missing you. Thinking about death and life and how it could just easily be done in one moment by drinking alcohol. It’s crazy how you can lose everyone just because you want to be fun for a couple of minutes and then die. Who is going to think of you when you are dead? So my experience is life changing.”

Sports individual winners

State of honor

Sports are both a team and individual competition and several students were given individual recognition this

month.

Marissa Gonzalez won the Citrus Belt Area Athletic Directors Association female Athlete of the Year Award. “I received the Athlete of the Year award, which is an honor to receive. My goals since freshman year was to

receive a full scholarship to play the sport that I love and to receive this award my senior year. I received this award because I’ve played multiple sports though out my high school experience, I’ve played varsity vol-leyball, soccer and, track and field.” Gerardo Vazquez won Citrus Belt Area Athletic Directors Associa-tion male Athlete of the Year Award. “I feel the hard work from all four

It’s a state of mind..a political state of mind. Alexia Camacho and Mohammad Awad were both selected for Girls and Boys State, a type of summer

camp where students from all over California learn about government and politics...hands on. “We’re going to compete for jobs like Congress, Senate... stuff like that. Actually run a campaign. I want to be a lawyer so since this program was about politics I wanted to learn more about what I’m going to get myself into in the future,” said Mohammad Awad. Both winners were inter-

viewed by people from A m e r i c a n Legion. They interviewed the top five junior boys and top five junior girls, as nominat-ed by teach-

ers and counselors. “When I won Girl’s State it was very surprising for me be-cause I did not expect to win. When I walked into that inter-view room, it was scary because I didn’t know any of the ladies who were inter-viewing me, but when I walked out of the interview I felt pretty confi-dent. Once they finished interview-ing each of the girls they had told me I had won,” said Alexia Camacho. The two students get to spend a week at a college. Alexia Camacho will be going to the Clare-mont McKenna College and Moham-mad Awad will be going to Cal State Sacramento. All expenses will be paid by the American Legion.

It is hoped with this honor that BHS will be able to host some state level choir events, showcasing the talent of the school. “My duties will include organizing music fes-tivals for choirs, bands, and orchastras throughout the area and putting together con-ferences to help other choir teachers.”

The time is eight-forty,I am twenty minutes early.

In the front I see Ines, and immediately feel stress.

I see Patty in the office, they’re my least favorite bosses.

Kevin’s on front counter,he’s off in an hour.

This means I’m on fries, did I eat butterflies?

I arrive in the breakroom,my shift will start soon.

I worry and I pray, that it won’t get busy this day.

Ten minutes fly by, it’s eight-fifty nine.

I go and clock in,now my day begins.

Day by Day

Childhood is happiness, Childhood is waking up with no worries.

Childhood isn’t wondering if you will eat today,Childhood isn’t wondering if you will have a place to live.

Childhood shouldn’t have worries,Childhood should have been slurpin’ on Mcflurrys.

But that wasn’t my childhood. My childhood consisted of bills, bills, bills.

Working as early as seven for a dollar a day,Had to save up day by day

Six Years OldI remember packing my bags,

FULL of excitement.I remember sitting by the window

watching the cars drive by.I remember thinking

‘Today will be a great day.’I remember seeing the beautiful blue birds

play in the puddle.I remember seeing the sun

come out from behind the clouds. I remember telling grandma,

“Daddy said he’s taking me to the park.”I remember grandma smiling

and handing me a homemade cookie.I remember that happy feeling

of seeing my dad again.I remember

hearing the house phone ring.I remember seeing the saddened look

on my grandmother’s face. “He’s not coming.”

I remember how that happy little girl feltlike someone dropped the world on her.I remember seeing the birds fly away,

as if a hunter was after them.I remember seeing the sun

suddenly being eaten by the clouds.I remember the sky

beginning to cry with me.I remember seeing the road

suddenly empty.I remember the broken look

my grandma and I exchanged. I remember never going to the park that day.

Grandpa

I remember feeling lost and aloneNo one to turn to

Nowhere to goThen my grandpa moved in.

I had someone to talk toSomewhere to go

Felt for once like a true homeThroughout all the yelling, I knew I wasn’t alone

He gave me hope He gave me pride

Like an angel who just earned her wings, ready to fly.

He would teach me new thingsLike how to build fences

And the tools to do itHe made me laugh,

Made me cry,But most importantly,

He influenced me To fly.

Then one day it seemed to changeHe had a heart attack

It seemed kinda strangeBut he needed surgery to be back.

I thought I was going to lose himLife wouldn’t be the same if I did

What would I do without himHe was my everything since I was just a kid.

Surgery after surgery Time after time but…

FinallyHe was himself again

I could learn more things Have more laughs

And live better knowing he was alrightHe is more than a grandpa to me, he is my best friend.

It was a clean sweep for the juniors in the poetry division of the district’s annual Pencil, Pen, and Brush competition, announced on April

26.Competition included GT, Colton, and Slover. Overall, BHS had 40 winners in various art, photog-raphy and writing categories. “I was really surprised, I’ve never really written a poem before but Ms.(Leticia) Desrochers made me do it for a grade. She really taught us well and brought out my inner poet. I’m glad I did my homework. I’m proud of myself,” said first place winner Saman-tha Alvarez.

“My favorite animal would be a bear and not because our mascot is a bruin bear, but because they are very graceful. I like to be outdoors and at Yosemite the national park. I usually

bears and it’s quite relaxing because they have a lot of strength and grace. Would I ever be a bear? No, because I like the way I am as a human and wise. I think my spirit animal is probably a

horse because when you think about it they’re hard working and serve other people.”- _Mr. Chris Herlihy

“My favorite animal would probably be an elephant or dolphin. I think because they’re endangered species and they’re adorable. Would I ever become either of these? Yes! Because they’re really smart and very majes-tic and I could stomp on enemies. My spirit animal would probably be a cheetah because it could run fast and hunt down it’s prey.”_Destiny Cruz (10)

“An elephant because not only are they very smart and remember just about everything and I find it very

stunning on how they look. I would never become an elephant because being human is the most amazing thing and you mostly get a choice on if you die or not, for the most part. My spirit

animal would be a seal because they have a nice life. They relax on the beach and soak up the sun. I’d say I relate to a horse the most because they’re strong and powerful.” _ Mr. Bangle

“My favorite animal would have to be a dog because growing up I was the youngest of my family. He-my dog- was my very close friend growing up. Actually, I would become a dog because the give unconditional love and support their masters. My spirit animal would be a tiger or lion because I could per-severe at work. I relate to dogs mainly because of their loyalty to their master and because I give my loyalty and sup-port to the school.” _Mr. Sandy Torres

“Sloth, because sloths are cool and lazy. I would love to be a sloth because I’d get to lie around and be lazy! I mean, name an animal that preys on a sloth? None of them. That’s why they’re awesome.”_John Moran

“Panda. They look cute and cuddly. I would love to be one because all they do is sit on their butts and eat. I think I can re-late to them because they’re lazy, like me.”

_Oralia Rodriguez

“Oh man, a zebra because of their unique colors. No, I wouldn’t have hands and I’m safe being a human. I think a bird because I like high alti-tudes.” _Adrian Perez

“My favorite ani-mal would be a turtle because the they’re cute. I’m fast so I would say cheetah. My spirit animal is a cheetah and

I would definitely become one if I could because they don’t die too easily.” _Ashley Gonzalez

“Wolf because there wise and they usu-ally alone and they seem majestic and natural to me. I would just because to see how it would feel. I think its a wolf. I probably relate to a wolf a lot because I’m usually alone in a corner not just any wolf a lone wolf.” _Jose Martinez

“My favorite animal is a tiger. I think they’re ferocious and don’t let anything stand in there way. Honestly, I’d say

tigers are my spirit animal because I’d like to think I can relate to them. I’m strong and you have to think twice if you think I would al-low anyone or anything stand in my way.”

_Maite Estrella

“ My favorite animal is a mantis (look it up), it’s awesome because no one knows what it is. I relate to a mantis shrimp because they’re short and fun. Overall, I’d say I’d re-late most to a black bear because they’re small, hairy and lazy. “_Nathan Fernandez

“My favorite animal is a tiger because I see it as it being the leader of all cat like animals. For example a cat, Jaguar or puma. If I could be this animal I would because they show power and pride never sadness like me. I think I would relate to an animal other than a tiger which is a wolf only because they belong to the wild. My spirit animal would be Taylor Swift’s cat,Meredith, because they are so relatable.”_Jackeline Felix-

The Faculty Follies, held on May 4, is a type of tal-ent show for our teachers. Some are serious about their talent, others are show-offs. Mr. Juan Agu-irre took first place was very serious. He said (jok-

ingly), “I am the best and I look forward to next to see if anyone will beat me.” Aguirre sang the song Amargo Adios in Spanish. Other acts included an act by Ms. Misty Wright and Ms. Cheryl Henderson who lip sync’d the song Ain’t No Hollaback Girl. Mr. John Zupanic, Mr. Roger Burgett (district groundman) and Nicole Araiza (former Colton High alumnus) played guitar and sang, Ms. Tricia Pahner played the piano, Mr. David Rojas sang and played the guitar and Mr. Michael Gill let his long hair and guitar fingers fly. Mr. Fabian Carballo and Mr. Hunt did several “impersonations” including eating a banana and spitting it out, impersonating a “zit.” Judge Iman Williams said, “Wright’s perfor-mance had to be the most entertaining performance.”
