    Y O U A R E R E S P O N S I B L E F O RF I R E A R M S S A F E T YAs a gun owner, you accept a set of demanding responsibilities. Howseriously you take these responsibilities can be the difference betweenlife and death.

There is no excuse for careless or abusive handling of any firearm. Atall times handle all firearms with intense respect for their power andpotential danger.

PLEASE READ AND UNDERSTAND ALL OF THE CAUTIONS, PROPERHANDLING PROCEDURES AND INSTRUCTIONS OUTLINED IN THIS OWNERS

MANUAL BEFORE USING YOUR NEW FIREARM.1 ALWAYS KEEP THE MUZZLE OF YOUR SHOTGUN POINTED IN A SAFE

DIRECTION even though you are certain it is unloaded. Never pointany firearm at anything you do not intend to shoot. Be extremelyalert and aware of all persons and property within the range of

    your ammunition.

2 NEVER RELY TOTALLY ON YOUR SHOTGUNS MECHANICAL SAFETY

DEVICE. The word safety describes a guns trigger block mechanism, sear block mechanism, hammer block mechanism or firing pin blockmechanism. These mechanical devices are designed to place your gunin a SAFERstatus. No guarantee can be made that the gun will not fireeven if the safety is in the on safe position. See Operation of theSafety on page 9 for instructions on operation of this guns safety.

    LIKE ANY MECHANICAL DEVICE, A SAFETY CAN SOMETIMES FAIL;

IT CAN BE JARRED OR INADVERTENTLY MANIPULATED INTO AN

UNSAFE CONDITION. Mechanical safetiesmerely aid safe gunhandling and are no excuse for pointing your shotguns muzzle inan unsafe direction.

While it is a good idea to test your shotguns mechanical safetiesperiodically for proper function, NEVER TEST THE SAFETY WHILEYOUR FIREARM IS LOADED OR POINTED IN AN UNSAFE DIRECTION.Safe gun handling does not stop with your guns mechanical safetydevices it starts there. Always treat this shotgun with the respectdue a loaded, ready-to-fire firearm.

    4/31

3 WHENEVER YOU HANDLE ANY FIREARM, OR HAND IT TO SOMEONE,ALWAYS OPEN THE ACTION IMMEDIATELY. VISUALLY CHECK YOUR

SHOTGUNS CHAMBER. Make certain it does not inadvertently containany ammunition. Always keep the chamber empty and the safety in the

on safe position unless shooting is imminent.

4 DO NOT TRANSPORT ANY FIREARM LOADED. Keep all firearms unloadedduring transport, whether stored in a holster, gun case, scabbard orother container.

5 HUNTING FROM ELEVATED SURFACES SUCH AS TREE STANDS ISDANGEROUS. Doing so may increase the risk of handling any firearm.

The following rules should always be observed by you and those youhunt with: Always make certain that the stand being used is safe andstable. Always make certain that your firearm is unloaded when it isbeing taken up and down from the stand. Always make certain that

your firearm is not dropped from the stand, or dropped while it isbeing taken up or down from the stand. Remember, a loaded firearmmay discharge when dropped.

6 BEWARE OF BARREL OBSTRUCTIONS. Do this for the safety of both yourgun and yourself. Mud, snow, and an infinite variety of other objectsmay inadvertently lodge in a barrel bore. It takes only one smallobstruction to cause dangerously increased pressures that may damage

your gun and cause injury to yourself and to others.

BEFORE CHECKING FOR A BARREL OBSTRUCTION, BE CERTAIN NO LIVE

ROUNDS ARE IN THE CHAMBER. PLACE THE SAFETY IN THE ON

SAFE POSITION. After assuring yourself that the firearm iscompletely unloaded, again, open the breech or action and lookthrough the barrel to be sure they are clear of any obstruction. If anobstruction is seen, no matter how small it may be, clean the borewith a cleaning rod and patch as described later in Cleaning andMaintenance Suggestions on page 23. Before the first firing, cleanthe bore with a cleaning rod and patch, and wipe away any anti-rust

    compounds in the action/chamber areas.

7 ALWAYS UNLOAD YOUR SHOTGUN WHEN NOT IN USE. As a safety

precaution, it is preferable to disassemble your gun for storage. Storeyour firearm and ammunition separately well beyond the reach of

children. Take all safeguards to ensure your shotgun does not become

available to untrained, inexperienced or unwelcome hands.

8 USE THE PROPER AMMUNITION. The barrel and action of this shotgunhas been made with substantial safety margins over the pressures

developed by established American commercial loads. Nevertheless,we can assume no liability for incidents which occur through the use

of shotshells of nonstandard dimensions which develop pressures inexcess of commercially available ammunition which has been loaded

in accordance with standards established by the Sporting Arms andAmmunition Manufacturers Institute (SAAMI).

BE ALERT TO THE SIGNS OF AMMUNITION MALFUNCTION. IF YOU

DETECT AN OFF SOUND OR LIGHT RECOIL WHEN A CARTRIDGE IS

FIRED, DO NOT LOAD ANOTHER CARTRIDGE INTO THE CHAMBER.

Open the action and remove all the shells from the chamber. Glance

down the barrels to make sure that a wad or other obstruction doesnot remain in the barrel. Completely clear the barrel before loadingand firing again. Failure to follow these instructions can cause

extensive damage to your gun and possible serious injury to yourselfand others.

Make sure of adequate ventilation in the area that you discharge afirearm. Wash hands thoroughly after exposure to ammunition or

cleaning a firearm.Lead exposure can be obtained from discharging firearms in poorlyventilated areas, cleaning firearms or handling ammunition. Lead is asubstance that has been known to cause birth defects, reproductiveharm and other serious injury.

9 NEVER INSERT A SHELL OF THE INCORRECT GAUGE IN ANY SHOTGUN.

The gauge of your shotgun is marked on the side of the barrel. Storeall shells of different gauges in completely separate and well-marked

containers. Never store shells of mixed gauges in a common containeror in your pockets.

    4

  • 7/29/2019 Browning Bps

    6/31

EXAMINE EVERY SHELL YOU PUT IN YOUR GUN. DO NOT PUT A 20

GAUGE SHELL IN A 12 GAUGE GUN. DO NOT PUT A 28 GAUGE SHELL

IN A 20 GAUGE GUN. DO NOT PUT A .410 BORE SHELL IN A 28 GAUGE

GUN. NEVER PUT METALLIC CARTRIDGES OF ANY KIND IN A SHOTGUN.

SPECIFICALLY, NEVER PUT CENTERFIRE RIFLE OR PISTOL CARTRIDGES INA SHOTGUN CHAMBERED FOR .410 BORE. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THIS

WARNING MAY RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY TO YOU AND TO OTHERS.

The most certain way to bulge or rupture a shotgun barrel is to loada smaller gauge shell into a larger gauge chamber. The smaller gauge

shell will not fall completely through the barrel; its rim is caught bythe front of a larger gauge chamber or at the larger gauges choke.

Your gun will misfire (with the chamber appearing to be empty). It isthen possible to load the correct gauge shell behind the smaller gauge

shell. If the gun is then fired, the result will be a so-called 12-20,

20-28 or 28-.410 burst which can cause extensive damage to yourgun and possible serious injury to you and others.

10 USE SHELLS OF THE CORRECT LENGTH. Do not use 3" or 312" shellsin a barrel with a 234" or 212" chamber, or 312" shells in a barrel with

a 3" chamber. Doing so can result in a buildup of dangerously highpressures that may damage your gun and possibly cause serious

injury to yourself or others. The size of the chamber is inscribed onthe side of the barrel.

11 DO NOT SNAP THE FIRING PIN ON AN EMPTY CHAMBER THECHAMBER MAY NOT BE EMPTY! Treat every gun with the respect due

a loaded gun, even though you are certain the gun is unloaded.12 KEEP YOUR FINGERS AWAY FROM THE TRIGGER WHILE UNLOADING

OR LOADING, UNTIL YOU ARE READY TO SHOOT.

13 BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND BACKSTOP. Particularly during lowlight periods. Know the range of your ammunition. Never shoot at

    water or hard objects.

14 ALWAYS UNLOAD YOUR SHOTGUNS CHAMBERS BEFORE CROSSING AFENCE, CLIMBING A TREE, JUMPING A DITCH OR NEGOTIATING OTHEROBSTACLES. Never lean or place any loaded firearm on or against a

fence, tree, car, or other similar object.5

    7/31

15 WEAR EYE AND EAR PROTECTION WHEN SHOOTING. Unprotected,

repeated exposure to gunfire can cause hearing damage. Wear earprotectors (shooting ear plugs or muffs) to guard against such

damage. Wear shooting glasses to protect your eyes from flying

particles. Always keep a safe distance between the muzzle of yourfirearm and any persons nearby, as muzzle blast, debris and ejectingshells could inflict serious injury. Also, wear eye protection when

disassembling and cleaning any firearm to prevent the possibilityof springs, spring-tensioned parts, solvents or other agents from

    contacting your eyes.

16 DROPPING OR JARRING A LOADED GUN CAN CAUSE AN ACCIDENTAL

DISCHARGE. This can occur even with the safety in the on safeposition. Be extremely careful while hunting or during any shooting

activity to avoid dropping any firearm.

17 IF YOUR GUN FAILS TO FIRE, KEEP THE MUZZLE POINTED IN A

SAFE DIRECTION. Hold this position for a minimum of 30 seconds.

Carefully open the action and remove the shotshell. If the primer is

indented, the shell should be disposed of in a way that cannot causeharm. If the primer is not indented, your firearm should be examinedby a qualified gunsmith and the cause of the malfunction should be

    corrected before further use.

18 BE DEFENSIVE AND ON GUARD AGAINST UNSAFE GUN HANDLING

AROUND YOU AND OTHERS. Dont be timid when it comes to gunsafety. If you observe other shooters violating any of these safety

precautions, politely suggest safer handling practices.19 BE CERTAIN YOUR SHOTGUN IS UNLOADED BEFORE CLEANING.

Because so many gun accidents occur when a firearm is being

cleaned, special and extreme care should be taken to be sure yourgun is unloaded before disassembly, cleaning and reassembly.

Keep ammunition away from the cleaning location. Never testthe mechanical function of any firearm with live ammunition.

    6

20 TEACH AND SUPERVISE FIREARMS SAFETY TO ALL MEMBERS OFYOUR FAMILY ESPECIALLY TO CHILDREN AND NON-SHOOTERS.

Closely supervise newcomers to the shooting sports. Encourage

    enrollment in hunting/shooting safety courses.

21 NEVER DRINK ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES OR TAKE ANY TYPE OF DRUGS

BEFORE OR DURING SHOOTING. Your vision and judgment could bedangerously impaired, making your gun handling unsafe to you and

    to others.

22 READ AND HEED ALL WARNINGS in this owners manual, on

ammunition boxes and with all accessories that you install on your

firearm. It is your responsibility to secure the most up-to-dateinformation on the safe handling procedures of your Browning gun.

We assume no liability for incidents which occur when unsafe orimproper gun accessories or ammunition combinations are used.

23 PRACTICE PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AVOID UNAUTHORIZED SERVICING.

Your firearm is a mechanical device which will not last forever, and as

such, is subject to wear and requires periodic inspection, adjustment

and service. Browning firearms should be serviced by a Browningrecommended service facility or by Brownings service facility inArnold, Missouri. We cannot assume any responsibility for injuries

suffered or caused by unauthorized servicing, alterations ormodifications of Browning firearms.

DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, ALTER THE TRIGGER, SAFETY

OR OTHER PARTS OF THE FIRING MECHANISM OF THIS OR ANY OTHER

FIREARM. FAILURE TO OBEY THIS WARNING MAY RESULT IN INJURYOR DEATH TO YOURSELF OR OTHERS.

    BE CAREFUL!

In conventional gun terminology, the position and movement of gunparts are described as they occur with the gun horizontal and innormal firing position; i.e. the muzzle is forward or front; thebuttstock is rearward or rear; the trigger is downward or underneath;the sight is upward or on top. For general parts nomenclature refer toFigure 1. The BPS also is shown disassembled to the extent necessaryin order to follow instructions contained in this book (Figure 1A).

G E N E R A L O P E R A T I O NThe Browning BPS shotgun is a manually operated, slide action, repeatingshotgun. The release mechanism is operated by moving the slide (forearm)in a rearward motion, followed by a forward motion. This action unlocksthe breechblock, extracts and ejects the fired shell casing, transfers a liveshell from the magazine to the chamber and re-locks the breechblock. The

BPS is loaded from the bottom of the receiver and fired shell casings areejected from a bottom ejection port. Bottom loading and ejection makesthe BPS ambidextrous. The BPS is designed so that the barrel can be easilyremoved by unscrewing the magazine cap from the magazine tube andthen sliding the barrel forward out of the receiver. This facilitates cleaning, transportation and storage.

S E R I A L N U M B E RThe serial number of your BPS shotgun is found on the right sideof the receiver, at the bottom, near the front just above theejection/loading port.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION BEFORE CLEANING

    YOUR SHOTGUN.

    C L E A N I N G P A R T S W I T H S P E C I A L F I N I S H E S

Be especially careful when cleaning guns with camouflage,Dura-Touch Armor Coating and other special finishes. Alwaysprevent these surfaces from coming in contact with cleaning solvents, barrel scrubbers and other strong chemicals. It is preferable to cleanthese surfaces with a light gun oil containing no solvents or with adamp cloth and mild dish soap (be sure to keep water out of the

action). When cleaning your firearms bore and action, protect theexternal finishes from any contact with chemicals used. Also, avoidany contact between external finishes and other strong chemicals likethose found in DEET-containing insect repellents, sunscreens, etc.Damage to camouflage, Dura-Touch and other finishes caused bychemicals is irreversible and unrepairable.

    C L E A N I N G

Various exposed metal parts of your new BPS have been coated at thefactory with a rust-preventative compound. Before assembling yourBPS, clean the anti-rust compound from the inside of the barrel, receiver and the action/chamber areas. A light, fine oil is ideal forremoving this compound and for giving your new gun its firstlubrication. Clean the barrel using a cleaning rod and patch as

explained under Cleaning and Maintenance Suggestions page 23.

A M M U N I T I O NAll current 12 and 20 gauge and .410 bore BPS models have a 3"chamber (except the 312" 12-gauge model) and are designed to shootand function with all factory loads: 3" Magnum, 234" Magnum, 234"High Velocity loads, 234" Field and 234" Target loads. The 312" model is

    designed to shoot all 31

    2", 3" and 23

4" shells. The 10 gauge BPS ischamber for 312" loads and the 28 gauge BPS is chambered for 2 34"loads only. The BPS is especially suited to shooting factory steel shot

    10

    12/31

loads. Loads of the proper gauge can be intermixed in the magazine,in any order. The length of the chamber is designated on the right sideof the barrel (toward the chamber).

The rifled choke tube is specially designed for shooting Foster or

    Sabot type slugs.

We can assume no responsibility for incidents which occur throughthe use of cartridges of nonstandard dimension or those developingpressures in excess of SAAMI (Sporting Arms and AmmunitionManufacturer's Institute) established standards.

CAUTION: SOME EARLIER BPS MODELS HAD A 234" CHAMBER ONLY.

IF THE BARREL IS STAMPED 234" ONLY, USE 234" SHELLS ONLY. DO NOT USE312" SHELLS IF THE BARREL IS STAMPED 3" OR 234" SHELLS ONLY. DOING

SO CAN RESULT IN A BUILD-UP OF DANGEROUSLY HIGH PRESSURES THAT

MAY DAMAGE YOUR GUN AND POSSIBLY CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY TO

    YOURSELF OR OTHERS.

When the slide on the BPS is positioned fully forward it locks intoposition, closing and locking up the breechblock. It is necessary torelease it allowing the slide to be pulled rearward in order tofollow normal shooting procedures and assembly as outlined inAssembly on page 12. Thebutton is located on the left sideof the trigger guard, at the rear,

behind the trigger (Figure 3).To release the slide, applyrearward pressure on the slidewhile simultaneously pushing upon the slide release button. Thebutton moves upward and slightlyto the rear when depressed.

If you are a right-handed shooter, reach under the rear of the triggerguard, to the opposite side with

    your trigger finger. Specific uses

of the slide release button areoutlined in the following sections.

A S S E M B L YThe BPS is delivered, in the box, with the barrel removed and theforearm still attached to the

magazine tube. WARNING: IT IS IMPORTANT TO FOLLOW THE EXACTSEQUENCE FOR ASSEMBLY IN STEPS 1 AND 2, IN ORDER TO PROPERLY

ASSEMBLE YOUR BPS. ALWAYS PLACE THE SAFETY IN THE ON SAFE

    POSITION BEFORE BEGINNING ASSEMBLY PROCEDURES.

1 Remove the magazine cap. Depress the slide release and pull the

forearm completely to the rear-most position.

2 Hold the stock/receiver in a horizontal position with the ejection port

down. Then, with the forearm already in the fully rearward position, push the forearm forward until the rear of the forearm is even with

the front of the receiver (Figure 4).

NOTE: In order to introduce the barrel extension into the receiver,

the carrier must be lowered. To effectively lower the carrier, the

forearm must be moved completely to the rear first. Then, theforearm must be partially moved forward (as detailed in Step 2) so

that the barrel extension will not bind against the carrier. With theejection port downward, the bolt will retain the carrier in a position

low enough to allow easy insertion of the barrel.

3 Before attaching the barrel, be sure to glance through the bore to be

sure it is clear of any obstructions.

4 With the forearm positioned as explained in Step 2, insert the barrel

extension into the receiver. Move the barrel rearward, guiding thebarrel guide ring over the magazine tube. The barrel tab projects

from the most rearward rib post on the top of the barrel. Be sure the

barrel tab aligns with and enters the recess in the front, upper surfaceof the receiver (Figure 5).

IMPORTANT: BPS Deer and Turkey guns are shipped with a barrelstabilizing split ring and a barrel stabilizing lock washer on the

magazine tube. This special design ensures a very rigid barrelmounting method for maximum accuracy. You must remove the

barrel stabilizing ring and washer from the magazine tube beforeinstalling the barrel. After mounting the barrel to the action, slide the

barrel stabilizing split ring on the magazine tube, being sure that thebeveled surfaces of both the split ring and the guide ring match. Place

the lock washer on top of the split ring (Figure 6).

5 Replace the magazine cap. Assembly is completed.

    D I S A S S E M B L YBEFORE STARTING DISASSEMBLY PROCEDURES, VISUALLY INSPECT THE

CHAMBER, FEED MECHANISM AND MAGAZINE TO BE ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN

THE SHOTGUN IS COMPLETELY UNLOADED. BE CERTAIN THE SAFETY IS

IN THE ON SAFE POSITION. POINT THE BARREL IN A SAFE DIRECTION.

1 Place the slide in its forward position. Unscrew the magazine cap andremove it.

    13

  • 7/29/2019 Browning Bps

    15/31

2 Holding the receiver in one hand, and the barrel in the other, ease the

barrel forward off the magazine tube and out of the receiver.

IMPORTANT: On BPS Deer and Turkey guns it is necessary tofirst remove the barrel stabilizing lock washer and split ring before

    removing the barrel.

3 No further disassembly for normal maintenance is suggested.

T H R E E S H O T A D A P T E R / M A G A Z I N E C A P A C I T YThe BPS shotgun, in all gauges, is delivered with the magazine threeshot adapter (plug) installed in the magazine, limiting magazinecapacity to two shells in compliance with federal migratory birdregulations. If you do not wish to be limited to three shots whenit is not required by law you can remove (or reinstall) the threeshot adapter (plug) as follows:

ALWAYS WEAR PROTECTIVE SAFETY GLASSES DURING THIS OPERATION.

1 First, make certain the safety is in the on safe position and thegun is totally unloaded. CHECK THE MAGAZINE, FEED MECHANISM

AND CHAMBER TO BE SURE THEY DO NOT CONTAIN ANY SHELLS.2 Unscrew the magazine cap and remove it.

3 The magazine three shot adapterlays on top of the magazine

spring retainer located in theforward end of the magazine

tube and is only held in themagazine tube by the magazinecap. Simply pull the three shot

adapter out of the magazine tubewith your fingers to remove

(Figure 7). (You may also holdthe shotgun upside down to

    make it slide out.)

    14

    FIGURE 7

Pull the three shot adapter out of the magazine

    tube with your fingers.

  • 7/29/2019 Browning Bps

    16/31

4 Reinstall the magazine cap. With the magazine adapter removed, the

BPS pump shotgun has a total capacity of five 234" loads (four in the

magazine and one in the chamber), and a total capacity of four 3" or312" magnum shells (three in the magazine and one in the chamber).

Magazine capacity with the three shot adapter installed is two 23

    4",3"or 312" shells.

IF THE BARREL IS STAMPED 234" ONLY, USE 234" SHELLS ONLY. DO

NOT USE 312" SHELLS IF THE BARREL IS STAMPED 3" OR 234" SHELLS

ONLY. DOING SO CAN RESULT IN A BUILD-UP OF DANGEROUSLY HIGH

PRESSURES THAT MAY DAMAGE YOUR GUN AND POSSIBLY CAUSE

SERIOUS INJURY TO YOURSELF OR OTHERS.

If, at some future time, you wish to limit your gun to three shots

again, unscrew the magazine cap and insert the three shot adapter.

    Replace the magazine cap.

L O A D I N GAT ALL TIMES DURING THE LOADING AND FIRING PROCEDURE, BE SURE

YOUR MUZZLE IS POINTING IN A SAFE DIRECTION AND THE SAFETY IS

    IN THE ON SAFE POSITION.

With the slide fully forward, insert a shell, nose first, through thebottom ejection port into the rearof the magazine tube against themagazine spring follower until therim of the shell slips in front of the

cartridge stop (Figure 8). Loadadditional shells in the samemanner until the magazine is full.To load a shell from the magazineto the chamber, depress the sliderelease and cycle the slide. Anothershell can then be loaded into the

magazine. Test locking of the breech-block by attempting to retract theslide. The slide should not retract.

F I R I N GWith the chamber loaded, all thatis necessary to fire the gun is to push the thumb safety forwardto the off safe position (red warning dot exposed) and pull the

trigger. The action of the hammer falling unlocks the slide.Consequently, after firing, it is not necessary to depress the sliderelease in order to draw the slide rearward. Simply draw the sliderearward to extract and eject the spent case; push it forward to feeda live round from the magazine to the chamber.

AFTER SHOOTING, IMMEDIATELY PLACE THE SAFETY IN THE

    ON SAFE POSITION.

    U N L O A D I N GAT ALL TIMES DURING UNLOADING PROCEDURES, BE SURE YOUR MUZZLE

IS POINTING IN A SAFE DIRECTION AND THE SAFETY IS IN THE ON

    SAFE POSITION.

With the safety in the on safe position, invert the gun (ejection

port up). The slide (forearm) should be in the forward position.Reach down inside the ejection/loading port and depress the projectionon the cartridge stop (Figure 9). The cartridge stop is located on theright side of the receiver cavitywhen the gun is inverted. Pressingthe cartridge stop releases a singleshell from the magazine each time

it is pressed. Remove all the shellsin the magazine.

Depress the slide release andretract the slide. The loaded roundin the chamber will be extractedand ejected as you pull the slidefully rearward. Visually check thechamber, feed mechanism andmagazine to be certain that thegun is completely empty.

    I N T E R C H A N G E A B L E C H O K E S Y S T E MPre-1983 BPS models are conventionally choked. Most current BPSshotguns have barrels that are threaded to accept the BrowningInvector choke tube system. You may confirm this by glancing on

the right side of your barrel where the specifications are inscribed. The degree of choke in the tube is indicated twice on each choke tube:inscribed on the side of the tube, and with a notch code on thetop rim of the tube (Figure 10A). Invector choke tubes are madewith tempered steel and are fully compatible with all FACTORYAMMUNITION (loaded in compliance with SAAMI specifications)including Magnum lead and steel shot loads and rifled slug loads.

    S T A N D A R D I N V E C T O R

Pre-1993 BPS models, excluding the 12 gauge 312" magnum, arethreaded to accept Standard Invector choke tubes. The 10 gauge,28 gauge and .410 bore BPS are also the Standard Invector choketube system.

    I N V E C T O R - P L U S

All current BPS 12 and 20 gauge shotguns, except the Deer gun, haveback-bored barrels and are threaded to accept Invector-Plus choketubes only. The word INVECTOR-PLUS denotes that the barrel isthreaded. The degree of choke in the tube is indicated twice on eachchoke tube: inscribed on the side of the tube, and indicated with anotch code on the top rim of the tube. All Invector-Plus choke tubesare made with tempered steel and are fully compatible with allFACTORY AMMUNITION (loaded in compliance with SAAMIspecifications) including magnum lead and steel shot loads and rifledslug loads. Our universal tube wrench is used to remove and installthese tubes.

CAUTION: INVECTOR-PLUS TUBES ARE FOR USE IN BROWNING

3 Before installing a tube, check the internal choke tube threads in the

muzzle, as well as the threads on the choke tube to be sure they are

clean. Lightly oil the threads with a fine, light oil.

4 Using your fingers, screw the appropriate tube into the muzzle end

of the barrel, tapered end first, notched end outward. When itbecomes finger-tight, use the choke tube wrench to firmly seat

    the tube.

THE CHOKE TUBE SHOULD BE PERIODICALLY CHECKED TO ASSURE THAT IT

IS TIGHT AND FIRMLY SEATED. BEFORE CHECKING, FOLLOW THE SAFETY

GUIDELINES ABOVE. ON MODELS WITH A RIFLED CHOKED TUBE, THE

CHOKE TUBE TIGHTENS WITH USE. THE RIFLED CHOKE TUBE SHOULD BE

REMOVED AND CLEANED AFTER EVERY 15-20 SHOTS TO AVOID EXCESSTIGHTENING AND TUBE REMOVAL PROBLEMS.

I N V E C T O R T U B E S E L E C T I O NTo help you choose the correct choke tube for each hunting andshooting situation, all Browning choke tubes are inscribed on the sidewith the patterns they produce with both lead and steel shot. Each

choke tube also has notches in the top rim of the tube. These notchesare a code to allow you to determine the choke designation while thetube is installed. Rim notches refer specifically to lead shot. You willneed to use the chart below to cross-reference from lead to steel anddetermine the appropriate tubes for your ammunition andhunting/shooting situation.

Several tubes are supplied with your Browning shotgun. The tubeslisted are also available as accessories. Remember, Invector-Plus andStandard Invector tubes are not interchangeable. Invector-Plus tubesare for Browning guns with back-bored barrels and are not for use onolder BPS shotguns. Before removing/installing tubes, or reading therim notch code, make sure your shotgun is fully unloaded.

Be especially careful when cleaning guns with camouflage,Dura-Touch Armor Coating and other special finishes. Alwaysprevent these surfaces from coming in contact with cleaning solvents, barrel scrubbers and other strong chemicals. It is preferable to cleanthese surfaces with a light gun oil containing no solvents or with adamp cloth and mild dish soap (be sure to keep water out of theaction).

Ordinary good judgment willindicate that the metal parts of thegun should receive a light film of

oil after the gun has been exposedto weather or handling.Occasionally a small drop of lightgun oil may be placed inside thereceiver track on which the breech-block and action bars ride duringoperation (Figure 12). This will

help to relieve friction and ensuresmooth operation. DO NOT POURLARGE QUANTITIES OF OIL INTO THE ACTION. A LARGE EXCESS OF OIL

WILL RUN BACK INTO THE WOOD OF THE STOCK AND CAUSE SOFTENING

OF THE WOOD, WITH CONSEQUENTIAL LOOSENING OF THE STOCK.

    C L E A N I N G P R O C E D U R E S

1 PLACE THE SAFETY IN THE ON SAFE POSITION AND OPEN THE

ACTION. BE CERTAIN YOUR SHOTGUN'S MAGAZINE, FEED MECHANISM

AND CHAMBER ARE UNLOADED. ALWAYS WEAR PROTECTIVE SAFETY

GLASSES DURING ALL ASSEMBLY, DISASSEMBLY AND CLEANING

PROCEDURES. KEEP AMMUNITION AWAY FROM THE CLEANING AREA. DO

NOT TEST THE FUNCTION OF YOUR FIREARM WITH LIVE AMMUNITION.

2 Remove the barrel so that it can be cleaned from the breech end.

3 Using a shotgun cleaning rod with tip and patch large enough fora snug fit in the bore, insert the rod and patch in the breech end of

the barrel and run back and forth through the bore several times.Remove and wipe the choke tube threads and barrel threads with

a brass or nylon brush, and lightly oil.

4 Inspect the bores from both ends for leading and plastic residue.Plastic residue is often left in the bores from the shot cups in modern

shotshells. Leading and plastic residue will appear as longitudinalstreaks and are usually more predominant near the muzzle and just

    24

    FIGURE 12

Occasionally place a drop of light gun oil inside

    the receiver track.

  • 7/29/2019 Browning Bps

    26/31

forward of the chamber. A normal amount of either is common and

    is not serious.

5 If leading or plastic residue seems excessive you can remove it bybrushing the bores with a brass brush. Make certain there is a choke

tube installed. Soak the brush or spray the bore with a powder solventfirst. Scrub until clean. To prevent bristles from breaking off, push the

brush fully through each time before pulling it back through.

6 After all leading and residues have been removed, run a clean, dry

patch through the bores. Follow this with a final lightly oiled patch.

7 If the gun has been exposed to too much dust, dirt, mud or water, the

principal working parts should be wiped clean and lubricated with alight film of oil.

8 Reassemble the barrel and wipe all exposed metal surfaces with an

oiled cloth making sure to wipe the gun of all finger marks wheremoisture will accumulate.

9 Inspect the barrels and chambersTO BE CERTAIN NO PATCHES HAVEINADVERTENTLY BEEN LEFT IN THEM. Remove any that remain.

10 The wood surfaces can also be wiped with a fine oil, or they canbe polished with any quality furniture wax (but not both). No

maintenance is required for the composite stock and forearm. Itcan be wiped down with an oily rag if desired.

DO NOT TAKE YOUR GUN'S ACTION APART. This is a specialized, finely fitted mechanism; and you may mar it for life by an attempt

to remove the inner mechanism. It is unnecessary, and may dodamage to the inner mechanism, to disassemble it for routinecleaning and oiling. Of course, misfortunes (such as dropping

your gun in water) require appropriate attention, and in suchcircumstances we recommend you immediately take your gunto a competent gunsmith.
