The S4000 CNCThe S4000 series combines the S3000 series easy and

powerful programming system and the user friendly inter-face with the Windows operating system, offering moregraphic and multimedia tools, and making the CNC moreflexible and adaptable to standard market software applica-tions.

Continuing in the Selca tradition, it is ideal for milling,high-speed finishing of dies and molds and for productionmachining where execution speed, surface finish and quali-ty are really important.

The S4000 series has a powerful architecture based on double CPU’s: the first one with a PC Pentium classprocessor manages the user interface and external applica-tions, the second one with aMotorola processor managesthe machine tool real-time.This architecture allows theCNC to perform extremelycomplex calculation in veryshort time needed for high-speed milling, allowing, at thesame time, the operator toprogram the CNC using all theparticular features of the Selcasoftware.

CNC S4060D The S4060D represents the pinnacle of the Selca CNC range. Ithas been specifically designed for milling machines with 5 ormore axes. PROGRAMMING

ISO BASIC PROGRAMMINGThis programming level includes all the ISO standardprogramming functions with programming absoluteor incremental co-ordinates in the same block. It alsooffers some particular functions such as:• Cutter radius/tool length compensation• Offset/rotation of work co-ordinates • Mirror machining• Scale factors• Regular pocket programming • Drilling fixed cycles • Repeat cycles with internal/external subprograms

PARAMETRIC PROGRAMMINGPARAMETRIC programming allows the operator toprogram geometric and technological data by meansof parameters.The parameters can be initialized by associating anumerical value or a mathematical expression to theparameter or by reading the values stored in geo-metric entities.This way the programmer can use all geometric def-initions of points, straight lines and circles foreseen bythe PROGET2 language to solve geometric problemswithout any calculations and program complex sur-faces defined by mathematical laws.

PROGET2 PROGRAMMINGThe PROGET2 powerful and high-level geometricprogramming language is the ideal tool for complexplane profile programming, without any need forexternal CAD/CAM systems. The programmer canuse definition of points, straight lines, circles, linkingsand chamfers that can be written directly in the pro-

file or stored to solve complex geometric problems.For example, the center of a circle can be calculatedas intersection point of two straight lines defined astangent to two circles passing through three points.

INTERACTIVE CONVERSATIONALPROGRAMMINGThe Interactive Conversational Programming isbased on an advanced and powerful graphiclanguage structured in interactive panels andpermits the operation through proper guidedpaths, that simplify all the data input operationsand the definition of the necessary parametersto create a CNC program.The panels are divided into “technological pan-els”, that is, the panels that contain the tooldata and relevant fields to set the rpm andfeed and “G code panels”, that permit theoperator to define the geometrical path of themachined tool.Each panel can be confirmed only if all neces-sary data to define the G function are inserted.The Interactive Conversational Programmingcan be used in three different ways, dependingon the operator’s knowledge of Selca systems: • GUIDE MENUES: icons that recall programming

functions that are grouped into families.• G FUNCTIONS: the programming panels can be

recalled through Selca G codes.• PROGET2: softkeys that recall the specific panels

of the Selca PROGET2 language. The Interactive Conversational Programming is stan-dard to all Selca S4000 CNC.

PGI (INTERACTIVE GRAPHIC PROGRAMMING)PGI permits the operator, througha series of interactive panels, tosimplify more machining opera-tions and to group them under asingle program, that is displayedas a “machining tree” structure. A single PGI screen contains soft-keys for the options and displaysinput field for the workpieceshape with relevant help thatleads the user through data input.This makes the change of theparameters relating to the differ-ent machining strategies easier and immediate.Some macros (multifunctional screens that co-ordi-nate the data of the single screens) speed up the pro-gramming of the easier and repetitive operations.Through PGI it is possible to display the contents ofthe graphic tree in Selca language and store (on harddisk) the graphic machining, permitting the operatorto execute the program. PGI can be installed on all Selca S4000 CNC.

FAST EDITORThe new Selca Fast Editor is the ideal tool for peopleworking with CAM systems, which must directly operateon the mathematical model. It permits the opening onthe Numerical Control of CAM files of big dimensions(up to 2 GB) in few seconds and the intervention onthem with numerous advances functionalities, such as:• Possibility of displaying the profile under different

perspectives• Contemporaneous opening of files, displayed

through different colors• “gauge” function to measure distances on the plane• “spectrographical analysis” of the distance and den-

sity of the points with relevant representative graph

• Connection between the file list and the drawingwith the text block highlighted on the graphicsthrough flashing

• Display of the program block number directly onthe piece graph.

The new S4000 CNC operator interface is based onthe Windows operating system. It offers a direct useby reducing the need for a specific training.

MENU STRUCTURED OPERATORINTERFACEThe menu structured operator interface is based onthe use of function keys enabled by touch screen.5 function keys in different colors allow the operatorto access the menues of the 5 environments(machine tool, programming, tables, utilities, PLC).The menues are tree-structured and present only thefunctions directly referred to the operating environ-ment, by making programming and commands sim-ple and clear.Panels with information and graphs to program themost complex functions are displayed in windowsopened on the screen and permit to increase the out-put and the quality of the conversational program-ming.The multitasking structure of Windows permits to gofrom an environment to another without losing whatwas previously done, which remains open andactive.

THE GRAPHIC DISPLAY The execution of graphic display can be 2-D/3-D. Thegraph is automaticallyupdated together with theprogramming at any inser-tion or change of a block.The tool path is displayed indifferent colors for themachining and rapid move-ments. Points of a fixed cycleare highlighted by a thirdcolor.

DISPLAY DURING MACHININGDuring machining the axis values, machine functionsand part program are displayed with the executingblock highlighted.Alternatively, it is possible to display graphically 2-D/3-D with different colors, the tool path to be exe-cuted and the one actually executed.

THE MULTILINGUAL ENVIRONMENTThe S4000 CNC offers an operating multilingual envi-ronment. The language can be selected by the operator.

SelCAM-POWERSelCAM-POWER is a complete, powerful and flexi-ble CAM module, that offers the most recent software

programmingsolutions ofthe tool pathwith 3 axismachining. It permits theimport andmodificationof 3D surfacesin IGES andSTL format

and 2D profiles in DXF and IGES format from anoth-er CAD or CAM system.The structure of the command input and the operat-ing modes, displayed through a “machining tree”,guide the user and permit a rapid and intuitive defi-nition of all the machining parameters. SelCAM-POWER permits the intervention on theimported surfaces and profiles, by choosing: • the machining among numerous available strate-

gies; • the tool form in the library or customizable with

the control of the material components; • the general and specific parameters of the

machining. After having made these choices, SelCAM-POWERpermits the generation of the tool path in ISO format.SelCAM-POWER offers a graphic check function thatpermits the animated simulation of the tool removalby processing each machining. It also offers a func-tion that permits the generation of writing based onTrue Type characters, that are present in Windows.

SelCAM-COMPACTSelCAM-COMPACT is a 3D CAM module specificallydesigned to be inst al led on the S4000 CNC.

It is the idealinstrument forthe op eratorswho need asimple CAMsystem with all2D (milling,contour ing,drilling) and3D (contour-ing, milling,ziggy-zaggy,

plane machining) functions and do not use the 3Dadvanced functions, such as machining amongcurves, unidirectional, rest milling according to theprevious tool, etc.The SelCAM-COMPACT permits the import andmodification of 3D surfaces in IGES format and 2Dprofiles in DXF and IGES format. It permits the selection of the imported profiles andthe application on them of different machining, suchas repeat more than once a profile in depth and onthe plane, completely mill a pocket through passes indepth with the possibility to leave internal islands,apply draft wall angle to profiles, by executing themachining at constant depth. All this is applied at the tool form: cylindrical, toric orspherical. It also permits the selection of the importedcircles by diameter or color and their automaticmatch to a Selca drilling fixed cycle with the possibil-ity to easily customize the post-processor. On the SelCAM-COMPACT it is possible to install anoption called SELCAM-OPT-R, that permits theenabling of the important function Rest Milling.

SelDXF-2The SelDXF-2 is a converter of 2-D profiles, generat-ed by a CAD system from DXF format into a programformat for theSelca CNC. A selectingwindow pro-poses a filelisting in DXFformat. The importa-tion on them o n i t o rallows theoperator tohave one ormore enque -ued profiles. Some appropriate softkeys of the program allow theoperator to move the program to the beginning orhalfway point of a second program, therefore merg-ing the two programs to be independent from theoriginal CAD design. The output format can be ISO or ASCII (by points).The codes for the execution of the necessary machin-ing can be then inserted in the S4000 environment.

SMOOTHING FUNCTIONFor programs with segmented profiles generated byCAD or by a digitizing system, the function eliminatesdiscontinuity while machining, generating a smoothpath using B splines. This path respects the originalsegments within a programmable tolerance.

LOOK AHEADPre-processing of up to 256 blocks (512 on S4060D)and calculating instantaneously the radius of curva-ture of the surface, help foresee the sudden changesof direction to adapt speed to the profile accordingly.

ACCELERATION CONTROLThe acceleration changes are controlled in non-linearway through a harmonic function to obtain maxi-mum speed and the best finish, with the least stresson the machine.

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGYThe use of digital technology for the axis and spindledrives and motors controlled by the new S4000 dig-ital CNC contributes significantly to improve the pre-cision/time ratio in high-speed machining. TheS4060D and S4045P CNC in DDH version are alsoable to manage linear and torque motors.

PART PROGRAM EXECUTION The part program execution can take place from theintegrated hard disk, while the file transfer can takeplace from floppy disk, CD-ROM, network systems ordevices connecting to the two USB ports.

THE DRY RUN TESTIt is possible to carry out a dry run program test. Thistest can be executed automatically or in the semi-auto mode with the machining speed changed torapid mode.

THE MANUAL OR SEMI-AUTO MODEWhen the machine is in HOLD at block end duringthe semi-auto execution, the operator can executemanual movements to verify the tool or piece posi-tion.

THE BACKGROUND PROGRAMMINGWhile the machine is working, new programs can beintroduced, modified, or read from peripherals (mul-titasking function).

THE AUTOMATIC RESTART OF AN INTERRUPTED CYCLEThe S4000 CNC can execute in normal or speedmode the stored search of a block or the cycle restartof the last executed block.The speed mode has been developed to allow animmediate cycle restart in large programs generatedby CAD/CAM.

HIGH-SPEED MILLINGThe S4060D offers 5 special algorithms that are specifically designedfor the high-speed and a very powerful Motorola CPU for the axiscontrol with 1 ÷ 5 msec programmable axis sample time, 3000blocks/sec execution speed and 512 blocks look ahead.These characteristics make the S4060D the ideal CNC for high-speedmilling and finishing of complex dies on machines with 5 or moreaxes.

ADVANCED TCPM for 5 or more axesThe Selca software module Advanced TCPM (Tool Center PointManagement) automatically maintains the tool/workpiece contactwhile moving mono-birotary, orthogonal or angular heads androtary/tilting tables, by compensating through the linear axis move-ment the rotary axis movements.The contact is maintained even through combined head and tablemovements. VIRTUAL SLEEVEThe S4060D CNC offers a special function defined “virtual sleeve”.The virtual sleeve is a fictitious axis that moves in space along thedirection of the tool, that depends on the rotation of the mono orbirotary head. It is not necessary to program the function of the off-set/rotation in space. The virtual sleeve can be used both in manual and in automaticmode and can be combined with the TCPM function.

S4045PThe S4045PD is suited for high-speed machines destined to millcomplex surfaces.It is extremely fast and powerfuland is equipped with the Intel PCCPU for the operator interface andalso with a fast Master CPU withMotorola processor for the real-time control of the machine.In its basic configuration, it isequipped with a software modulecalled Advanced TCPM – 4 axes tomanage the tool/piece contactwith a rotary table or with an one-axis rotary head. In case of morerotary axes, it is possible to installan optional specific module calledTCPM4000.

HIGH-SPEED MILLINGThe S4045P, with its read speed of more than 2.000blocks/sec and 2÷5 msec programmable axis sample time,is the ideal CNC for high-speed die milling and finishing.

PROGRAMMINGThe S4045P CNC offers the highest level of sophisticated andcomplete programming, that includes all levels of Selca pro-gramming. The function also allows machining on inclinedplanes by resetting the tool on the plane and in space.

ADVANCED TCPM - 4 axesThe Advanced TCPM - 4 axes (Tool Center Point Manage -ment) software module permits to maintain automaticallythe tool/workpiece contact while moving a mono-birotary,orthogonal or angular head and rotary/tilting table, bycompensating through the linear axis movement the rotaryaxis movements. The function also allows machining on inclined planes byresetting the tool on the plane and in space.The main features of the Advanced TCPM - 4 axes are thefollowing: • Management of 4 linear and rotary axes• Look ahead on 4 axes • Constant speed of the tool point • Virtual sleeve axis • Preventive software end run calculation • Check of speed, acceleration and Jerk on all axes. • In case of a large number of rotary axes, it is possible to

install the optional module TCPM4000.

VIRTUAL SLEEVEThe S4045P offers a special function defined “virtual sleeve”.The virtual sleeve is a fictitious axis that moves in spacealong the direction of the tool, that depends on the rotationof the mono or birotary head. It is not necessary to programthe function of the offset/rotation in space. The virtual sleeve can be used both in manual and in auto-matic mode and can be combined with the TCPM function.

OFFSET/ROTATION IN SPACE (GE option)Allows the offsetting and rotation in space of a plane pro-file. This feature may be used on inclined planes or for

machining sol ids ofrevolution.

It can also be manu-ally used to controlmovement of vari-ous axes by movinga single handwheel.

CUTTER RADIUS CORRECTION WITHINTERFERENCE CONTROLCutter radius correction is made by checking congruency

of the corrected pro-file with the pro-grammed one,avoiding ma chiningin geometricallyincompatible zones.

These zones on theS4045P and S4045are stored for latercutting.

CHARACTER ENGRAVING (GE option)Allows generation of alphanumerical characters, in capitalor small letters and of special characters.

PROGRAMMINGThe S4040 programming environment has been designed for the machines and applications, to which this CNCis dedicated. The S4040 standard programming includes the BASIC and PROGET2 levels of the S4000 Series anduses, besides the standard ISO instructions enriched by special functions, the geometric, graphic and calculationsupport of the powerful integrated language PROGET2.The GE option (Expanded Geometry) offers the PARAMETRIC programming and many functions of ADVANCEDprogramming, typical of the S4045 and S4045P. The following functions are available as standard on the S4045and S4045P.
