Broadchurch (2013) Contextual Study – Week 3

Reflective Log

WRITER

Broadchurch was written by television writer, Chris Chibnall. Before the crime drama, he had written before for shows such as Life on Mars (2006-2007), Doctor Who (2005- ), and his own creation, Camelot (2011). Broadchurch was a new step, an idea which Chris had had since 2002. While many speculate that he was influenced heavily by the Scandinavian drama, The Killing (2007-2012), he admits he was more inspired by American drama shows like Twin Peaks (1990-1991) and Murder One (1995-1997). Broadchurch was about how a drastic event like the murder of a young boy, could affect a close-knit town such as Broadchurch and what effect social media and the press played on this all.

One of the episodes of Broadchurch was written by Louise Fox. She had previously worked with Chibnall on Camelot.

PRODUCTION

There were 3 production companies for Broadchurch. It was made by Kudos Film and Tv (Kudos for short). They had produced shows like Spooks, Law and Order (which Chibnall has written for before), Life on Mars (once again Chibnall has been involved in the writing of several of the episodes for this)

Figure 3 Kudos 2005-2013 logo

and Ashes to Ashes. One of their main genres is crime drama. Jane Featherstone at the time was the chief executive of Kudos and is an executive producer on the show.

Another company behind the production of Broadchurch was Imaginary Friends, a one off Production Company which has produced Broadchurch and the American remake of Broadchurch, Gracepoint. Chibnall is the executive producer for this company.

The show was produced for ITV. The show is also produced by Richard Stokes who produced the first two series of Torchwood, (which Chibnall has worked on).

CHARACTERS

One of the main characters of Broadchurch, DI Alec Hardy is played by the well-loved David Tennant. Best known for playing the role of the 10th Doctor in Doctor Who (2005- ), he was the reason a lot of people tuned in to watch Broadchurch. Chibnall had previously written episodes for Doctor Who when Tennant was on. Tennant was a big fan of Chibnall’s work and was keen to work with the director James Strong again. Strong had worked with

Tennant and Chibnall on Doctor Who and United (2011). Hardy as a character, views the community from the outside and suspects everyone.

The other main character of Broadchurch is Ellie Miller, played by Olivia Colman. Best known for her roles in Peep Show (2003-2015), Beautiful People (2008-2009) and Twenty Twelve (2011-2012), she is a Bafta award winning actress. Colman said in an interview for BBC America, “From the off, I really liked the idea of the story; a hard story and an upsetting, but I liked the idea of the whole community being affected by something and I liked the character of Ellie.” She was also used to the idea of community in the town, growing up in north Norfolk. Even now living in South London, she loves the community and described it the friendliest place she has ever lived.

The strong female lead was strongly need in a show like this. In 2013, according to gov.uk, (see source: (Gov.uk, 2013)) , women made up 27.3% of the total of police officers. In 2012, this was 26.8%. The percentage for women in more senior roles was 18.0% (2012 was 16.3%). The character of Ellie was well needed in the show. In the first episode, it is revealed her job of detective inspector has gone to a man. This reflects on real life, jobs like this more likely to go to a man than a woman.

The character of Ellie, is very close to the townsfolk, creating a contrast from the character of Hardy. She is warm and trusting which makes the viewers emphasise with her over the fact that the murder of Danny is also heavily affecting her.

The last main characters are Danny’s (played by Oskar McNamara) family. This consists of his mother, Beth (played by Jodie Whittaker), his dad Mark (played by Andrew Buchan ) and his sister, Chloe (played by Charlotte Beaumont). The family, much like Miller are very close to the other townsfolk, making it harder for them to suspect anyone when they find out that Danny has been murdered. Beth especially, brings a lot of raw emotion

to the screen. Her reaction to finding her son on the beach, is very real and other parents can empathises with her as no one wants to be in that position. As the episode goes on, it reveals the family aren’t as innocent as they seem with Chloe having an older secret boyfriend and Mark being out late on the night Danny was murdered.

LOCATION

The show is set in the fictional town of Broadchurch in Dorset. This seaside town was inspired by Chibnall home town of Jurassic Coast and set here because of this. Setting it here also gives the idea that the seaside equals happy place. It’s where people come to relax. This makes the town crumble even more when the murder case erupts. It’s the ideal place to live and has a certain innocence to it. Everyone knows everyone so it’s harder to suspect anyone. The filming locations for Broadchurch were North Somerset, Devon, Dorset and Berkshire.

THE PRESS

The press plays a very big role in Broadchurch. More the intrusion of the press than anything else. In the year 2011, the press itself was in the news a lot for the phone hacking scandal. This created the Levinson Inquiry which

Figure 9 Broadchurch Location

Figure 8 Danny's Family

Page 8: Broadchurch - lydiareevesfilmtv16.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web viewHow to Harvard Reference in Word and Creating a Bibliography15. Appendix 220. How to add pictures, graphs, etc

looked into the culture, practices and ethics of the British Press. Although Broadchurch doesn’t feature anyone going as far as hacking a phone, the idea of the press intruding on something very upsetting such as a child murder is a big part of the show. In the first episode of Broadchurch, the news of Danny’s death was sent as a tweet, meaning some of his own family members found out through social media rather than being told by the police. Britain has the right to freedom of expression but there are still some censorships when it comes to the media.

A lot of the news is now 24/7 which means to avoid pumping out the same old stories, they find new ones, quickly. This means they aren’t always completely fact checked which can result in fake and misleading news.

CHILD ABDUCTION

The main plot of Broadchurch is about the death of Danny. In the first episode, at a newspaper company, they say they can’t do a story on Danny as it’s the wrong profile. This is because he is a boy. It’s much more likely they would report on a girl. White girls to be very specific. This is because they give off a sense of innocence. According to a slate news article, in the year 2007, it was reported about 800,000 kids go missing ever year. That’s about 2,000 a day. One of the most famous cases of child abduction over the last 10 years or so, was Madeline McCann. With a still to this day, ongoing investigation, Madeline is probably “the most heavily reported missing persons case in modern history.” Madeline’s parents, Kate and Gerry have received a lot of backlash from the press. They testified in the Levinson Inquiry, supporting for tighter press regulations. Twitter also has played a big role in this case, with her parents often being attacked on Twitter.

The family itself are similar to Danny’s family. Neither family suspected something that drastic would happen to them. The McCann’s were simply on a family holiday and are now constantly being targeted in the news.

With a case this large and famous there is almost no doubt that Chibnall was inspired some way by in in the making of Broadchurch.

Own Choice Target Audience Study – Week 9

Figure 12 Skins Logo by E4

Back in the day E4, was probably best known for its constant reruns of the hit American sitcom, Friends (1994-2004). But in 2007, a little show called Skins (2007-2013) about a group of teenagers in Bristol came along. It was the first ever show created for E4 and for the young written by the young.

In that time, shows about teenagers were all American’s with glamourous lifestyles and big houses and played by actors 10 years their age. Skins was something different. At last, teens would have their own show and not have to rely on relating to the few teen characters in Hollyoaks.

The storylines were filled with partying, drugs and relationship. They were exaggerated but at the same time understood teenagers. Although many teenagers probably haven’t drowned a car in a river with £300 of spliff inside or dance to Funky Town with their teachers instead of sitting their exam, Skins had characters that teens could relate to. Skins also paved the way for other teen centred shows like Misfits (2009-2013), The Inbetweeners (2008-2010), My Mad Fat Diary (2013-2015) etc.

This breakdown on Skins is focused purely on the first two series or better known as generation 1.

Page 15: Broadchurch - lydiareevesfilmtv16.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web viewHow to Harvard Reference in Word and Creating a Bibliography15. Appendix 220. How to add pictures, graphs, etc

The Creators:

The show was created by father and son duo, Bryan Elsey and Jamie Brittain. At university, Elsey became friends with Harry Enfield (who plays Effy and Tony’s dad, Jim Stonem) and formed the comedy duo, Dusty and Dick. Before Skins, Elsey had written for several episodes of Casualty (1989- 1993) and the miniseries, The Crow Road (1996). Brittain on the otherhand, had never written for TV before Skins. He had however, wrote a concept for the show, a novel. Although, never finished, at the age of 15, Jamie wrote about the characters of Sid, Tony and Michelle (Annie in the novel). He felt the storyline in the book wasn’t strong enough but the characters were strong enough to carry in a television show.

Over breakfast, while his father was bouncing ideas off of his son, Brittain told him that all his pitches were just middle-aged rubbish. Elsey responded that if he was so smart, he should come up with his own pitch. Half an hour later, they were ready to go to their producers.

Elsey set up a group of young writers. The twenty-year olds were in charge of writing the actual episodes for the first series while the younger writers took charge of writing the short 6-minute episodes for the web. In the second series, more of the young writers wrote the actual episodes. The younger writers were also used for inspiration. The researchers for the show just resulted in a bunch of teens running wild around the city. But having it like this made it more real. It wasn’t adults writing about what they think teens were like, it was teens writing about what was life right now.

The Producers:

The show was created for E4. It was the first show to ever be created for the channel. The other production companies are Company Pictures and Stormdog Films. Stormdog Films has produced Skins and Rose and Maloney (2002-2005). They are a part of BFI. Company Pictures is a production company set up in 1998. They have produced Shameless (2004- 2013) , Skins, Wild at Heart (2006-) and many more.

The Characters:

Tony Stonem

Tony is played by Nicholas Hoult. Most people knew him as the kid from About a Boy (2002), but Hoult has also starred in The Weather Man (2005) and Kidulthood (2006). In Skins, he plays the character of Tony Stonem, the leader of the group of misfits. Tony is an all-round talented teen, with good grades at school, a great love life and talents in singing and controlling his friends. He got the role of Tony when he was studying in the Sixth Form College Farnborough. At the time, he was wanted for the role as Sid as it was more like himself, but ended up going for the role of Tony.

Michelle Richardson

Michelle is played by April Pearson. Pearson, before Skins was just your typical average teen. She was head girl at Colston’s Girl’s School in Bristol. She was spotted by Skins casting director, Jane Ripley, who asked her to audition for the part of Michelle. At the time Skins aired in 2007, Pearson had just turned 18. Michelle in the show, often struggles with her on and off again relationship with Tony and her mum’s, played by Arabella Weir (best known for Fast Show (1994-2014) many husbands.

Sid Jenkins

Sid is played by Mike Bailey. Skins was the first acting credit to Bailey’s name. Elsey and Brittain often state that Sid is based off Brittain and Sid’s dad, Mark, played by Peter Capaldi (The Thick of it (2005-2012)) is based off Elsey. Sid is Tony’s best friend and his doormat. In the series he has to deal with his mother leaving his father, and his dad’s death.

Cassie Ainsworth

Cassie is played by Hannah Murray. At 16, Murray auditioned for Skins for the experience. She impressed the producers and was cast as Cassie. The character of Cassie suffers from an eating disorder. According to the NHS, in 2007, around 6.4% of adults in the UK displayed signs of an eating disorder.

At the time, another character on British Tv was also following the eating disorder storyline. In

Hollyoaks (1995-), the character of Hannah suffered with bulimia

and anorexia. Her model friend, Melissa was the first character on a British Soap Opera to die of an eating disorder.

While Cassie’s character can often be used to glorify eating disorders, she also helped a lot of teenagers come to terms with their own problems. With so little representation of eating disorders on TV, some teens claimed that because they experienced a completely different or less severe kind of anorexia, that they were convinced they didn’t have these problems. (Leszkiewicz, 2017)

Jal Fazer

Jal is played by Larissa Wilson. For Wilson, Skins was her first piece of acting on the TV. Although often one of the lesser members of the gang, she is a shoulder to cry on. Between clarinet practise and dealing with her family, Jal is one of the less crazier characters. However, in series 2, she falls pregnant with Chris’ baby. According to the BBC, in 2007, 42,988 girls in the UK fell pregnant, with 50% getting an abortion. (News, 2010)

Chris Miles

Chris is played by Joe Dempsie. Dempsie received his acting training from the Central Junior Television Workshop in Nottingham. Before Skins he had minor roles in Doctors (2001-2004) and Born and Bred (2005). Chris is well known for his love of pills. In 2006, it was reported, according to the NHS, that 17% of pupils had taken drugs in the past year, with 4% taking Class A drugs. Chris is the typical party animal. But another side of character affected a lot of viewers. At the end of series 2, Chris dies from a subarachnoid haemorrhage. The death helped show that nothing is

permanent and how the Skins characters react to the death of a loved one. Chris also has to deal with his mother abandoning him and becoming homeless.

Maxxie Oliver

Maxxie is played by Mitch Hewer. Hewer had no acting credits to his name before Skins. Hewer plays the character of Maxxie in

the first generation. He is portrayed as the stereotypical gay teen character with his bleach blonde hair and his love for dance. His character doesn’t expand much from there. He’s very feminine and lives up to typical ideal of a gay man. However, his character does deal with a lot of harassment from others from being gay. In, 2007, according to Stonewall, 65% of LGBT pupils were bullied for being LGBT.

Anwar Kharral

Anwar is played by Dev Patel. Patel made his screen debut in Skins, with no proper professional acting experience. The role of Anwar was party based on Patel’s personality and the role was written specifically for him. Anwar is not the stereotypical Muslim. In fact, he is the opposite. Pill popping, partying, drinking Anwar, still has time for his morning prayer after a party. Throughout the series, he comes to terms with his best friends, Maxxie sexuality, despite it being against his religion.

Effy Stonem

Figure 22 Screenshot from Skins 1.1 of Maxxie Oliver

Effy is played by Kaya Scodelario. At the age of 14 and with no acting experience, Scodelario was cast as Effy. At auditions, she felt she was too young but was told by a producer to stay and read her part anyway. Effy is Tony’s little sister. Although not one of the gang, she has her own episodes centered around her and her secret life.

The Location

Skins is set in Bristol. When asked how important Bristol was for the show in an interview for Televisionary, Brittain responded with “Yeah, because we're a very cheaply made show we don't really have the money for those very classy, high definition shots of the city. The city is very important to the show and we chose a city like Bristol because it's big enough to have a lot of interesting places to go to but small enough to have sort of a community centre to it. The word Bristol is never used in the show and we've only ever used the Clifton Suspension Bridge once, a big landmark that. I like to think that the city is sort of a strange, unknowable place in Skins and the characters move through it in a slightly confused sense.” (Lacob, 2009)

In conclusion, Skins is a show for teens, written by teens, starring teens. It’s a good look into the youth of the late 2000’s and although much of it is exaggerated for television, its relatable. The characters aren’t played by 30-year olds and the characters aren’t glamourous. They are spotty, often annoying and all have their own problems.

Extended Skills

Reflective Logs – one for each week

FRAMING AND COMPOSITION

In the lesson this week, we were focusing on one of the first skills we learnt in year 1, Framing and Composition. First, was a recap. When it comes to framing, there are many shots. Each with their on abbreviation, and each should be learnt.

ES- Establishing ShotThis shot is used to communicate the location to the audience

LS- Long ShotThis shot just includes the full body

MLS- Medium Long ShotThis shot is above the knee. This shot shows a little more detail in the object than the long shot.

MS- Mid ShotThis shot is above the waist and up. This shot can be used to show the upper half of an object. This shot can be used to show detail in the object but still show the surrounding area to the audience.

Page 23: Broadchurch - lydiareevesfilmtv16.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web viewHow to Harvard Reference in Word and Creating a Bibliography15. Appendix 220. How to add pictures, graphs, etc

MCU- Medium Close UpThis shot is from the upper torso and up. This frames the face while still showing part of the body. This shot works well as it captures the emotion in the subject’s face but isn’t as close as a close up shot.

Page 24: Broadchurch - lydiareevesfilmtv16.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web viewHow to Harvard Reference in Word and Creating a Bibliography15. Appendix 220. How to add pictures, graphs, etc

CU- Close UpThis is a close up shot. This shows clearly the expression in the subject’s face. It feels more personal like the audience is very close to the subject.

ECU- Extreme Close UpThis shot allows for the emotion in the face to be really shown in detail. This also puts emphasis on whatever is being focused

on and makes it feel important.

HAS- High Angled ShotThis shot makes the subject look week and inferior.

LAS- Low Angled ShotThis is the opposite of HAS and makes the subject superior and intimidating. This can show a character to have higher power than someone else.

DA- Dutch AngleThis shot helps show confusing in what is happening. Its tilt makes the audience feel that the scene is unusual and not normal.

Page 25: Broadchurch - lydiareevesfilmtv16.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web viewHow to Harvard Reference in Word and Creating a Bibliography15. Appendix 220. How to add pictures, graphs, etc

After the recap, we watched a clip from BBC’s The Game (2014). Although a short scene, there was a lot of different framing and lighting techniques.

We were then told, using our previous taught skills to recreate this scene, (up until 1:38), shot by shot. We gathered into groups, and went through the scene, screenshotting every time the camera changed position. We ended up with a total of 21 shots. We then looked at the lighting and framing of them all and thought about how we could recreate them with the equipment we had available. We also looked at which shots required the same lighting and basic camera setup and divided them like that, so we could save time and not have to change the lighting just to change it back again a shot after.

The equipment we had available was: A Canon 550D camera, A tripod, a reflector, a large LED light, a light stand and a small LED light (we obtained this halfway through shooting). There weren’t any major problems during when we were shooting, but the setup for each shot took a while as we were analysing the photo and comparing it to what we could see through the camera and seeing if ours looked like a good enough replica.

Overall, I’m happy with my work. Despite a lot of the shots being dark, I think the framing of the shots was almost identical and found this a great task to remind us of previous skills we have learnt to do with lighting and framing.
