    Graduation Speech 2014

    By Jack S., 8th

    Grade Class President

Hello everyone and thank you for coming to our eighth grade graduation. My name is Jack S. and I am the president of thisamazing class we have here. I thank all the teachers, staff, family, and friends for coming here to witness this class go forth. As a wayof expressing our thanks to the Williams School community, I am happy to announce to you that our class has installed a beaut iful owlbench near the Learning Wall outside of the 418 building. The bronze plaque reads The Williams School Class of 2014 Honor Before

Honors. Now, what I am about to tell you may sound a little bit like one of Mrs. Lindgrens current events. Otzi the Ice Man was

excavated in the Alps after two hikers noticed a strange brown object that was later found to be an ancient frozen human corpse. Thiswas an archaeological breakthrough and amazed the entire world. It allowed archaeologists to see a glimpse into the past and howthese men and women lived by examining the items that this man was carrying. They concluded that Otzi had embarked on a journeyaway from home. He had with him many tools to suggest he was a shepherd or a merchant, yet one in particular really caught somepeoples attention. Otzi carried close to him a small object that was contained within a box thatwas made out of birch bark andcarefully lined with maple leaves. The object in the box was protected against the cold in every way possible. Otzi knew that this itemwas the most important thing for his survival but it was also by far the most fragile. Otzi really inspired me and Ill come back to his boxin just a minute.

I have been at this school since kindergarten as have a number of the students graduating here today. During this time, asnew students have come in to our class, they have been welcomed immediately and soon enough its as though they have been here

since kindergarten as well. We are able to do this because of how close our class is.In school we enjoy socializing with each other every day, whether it is on the playground, in the cubby room or even in the halls. Inclass, we sometimes enjoy socializing a little too much and then after school we utilize all of the social media this generation has tooffer to communicate with each other, from texting to Snapchat and Instagram. Because we are so close, we have had manyexperiences that have given us great memories and have strengthened these bonds by a ton.

During one of these experiences, a 6 thgrade trip to Triple C, the Charlottesville Challenge Course, we were introduced toChuck the Rubber Chicken while we were all standing on a slippery log, and instructed to pass him down the line using only ourknees. This entire experience brought everyone out of their comfort zones. In 7thgrade we participated in a long canoe trip.Immediately when we got on the water, Bobby and Athreya flipped over. A lot of us ran into many rocks, including myself andSebastian in our canoe Bessie, along with Will, Ann and Eliza. On this trip, there was no drama and everyone got along perfectly. In8thgrade we got to shoot each other with silly string in the school play Bugsy Malone. Caelan, Maddy, Mikael, Juliette, Clay B, Megan,Sydney, Clay L, Val and Patrick were some of the many stars in this gangster production. It couldnt have been pulled offwithout the

backstage crew that included Bronwyn, Tucker and Kree.Throughout our time at The Williams School we enjoyed working together toward a magical common goal that has been an 8 th

grade tradition for many years: our class trip to Disney. The fundraisers for Disney World took a lot of work from everyone, includingthe teachers. We really enjoyed setting up for middle school dances and making signs for dances and dress down days, which theentire school loves. Even if students were not there to help with certain activities, they would always find a way to make it up someother time. Everyone did his or her part and because of this, we were able to enjoy an amazing time at Disney. Salom, Sarah,Isabella, Rebecca and Kate were having so much fun that they seem to pop up in every picture.

Im glad that we will always have these photos and these memories, but now, like Otzi the Ice Man, we find ourselves at thebeginning of a new journey. And, like Otzi, everyone in our class is carrying a similar box with something very special inside. At thetop of the mountains with ice as far as he could see, Otzis box protected a still-burning ember that he used to light a fire at night. Hislife depended on its spark, its warmth and its light.

Our box holds all of our Williams School experiences together. It holds the spirit of each member of this class and the values

that our amazing teachers have instilled in us. It holds the spark of friendship, the warmth of support and the light of honor.Everyone in this class is different, some of us excel in sports, some excel in academics, some excel in other activities, but

there is one thing that all of us have in common and hopefully always will. That very special similarity is the box that we all carry andthe Williams School spirit burning bright within it.
