Formula one racing legend nigel Mansell became the latest celebrity to be inducted onto the city’s Walk of Stars in Broad Street in august.

at the Star presentation, led by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor anita Ward, nigel said: “This is all a bit surreal; I feel very emotional. I’m a proud Brummie and to now be immortalised into its history in this way is one of the highlights of my career.”

Broad Street held a Midlands Motoring

celebration to coincide with the event, which enabled car fans and enthusiasts alike to take a look at some fantastic old and new cars from around the region.

Westfield Sports Cars, MG Motors, Lanchester, reliant, daimler and the Bond owners Club were among those who displayed their vehicles along the mile stretch of the street, alongside motoring charity Sporting Bears, which raised funds for local children’s charities.

In the afternoon, fans were delighted to see their F1 hero be presented with his star honour and nigel received

rapturous applause from the gathered crowds. Long-time pals and fellow Walk of Star recipients Jasper Carrot and Gary newbon also provided the audience with some entertainment.

nigel became a fully fledged F1 driver in 1981 with the Lotus team and received his first podium after just five races. Four years later, in 1985, he had his first win at Brands Hatch. In Hungary in 1992 he won the long-awaited moment: to stand on the podium as the Formula 1 World Champion.

The Broad Street Business

Improvement district (BId)

held its annual Poppy appeal

awareness campaign during

october and november,

launched by Walk of Star

recipient Matt Croucher GC and

the Lord Mayor of Birmingham,

Councillor anita Ward.

Since its inception in 2005, the BId has supported the royal British Legion and has raised thousands of pounds of much-needed funds each year. 2011 saw the campaign return to Birmingham’s Golden Mile. The area was fully decorated with poppies and there were collection tins in all the venues along the street.

The BId’s efforts to raise the profile of the Poppy appeal saw it displaying large poppies throughout the street and almost 20 6ft tall poppies decorated the hoardings around the new Library of

Birmingham site, which is adjacent to Birmingham’s Hall of Memory.

Mike olley, Broad Street BId Manager, said: “our poppy display was wonderful and we’re grateful to both Matt and the Lord Mayor for their help. Broad Street is the region’s premier entertainment and leisure destination, where 100,000 people visit each week and 12,000 come to work each day. We hope to raise a considerable amount for the royal British Legion in the meantime. as a street, we fully back the campaign – and I believe we’re the only street in the uK to do so!”

one of the major proposed initiatives of the Broad Street BId’s second term is a forward-thinking idea for a rapid Transport System, which would link Broad Street to the wider city centre.

Working with our key partners - Centro, Birmingham City Council, national express West Midlands, and the city centre’s other three BIds - we have developed a strategic plan, called the Vision for Movement, to generate some ‘joined-up’ thinking for getting around the city centre.

The Vision for Movement was launched in the autumn of 2010 and in november 2011, more than 100 key figures from

the city’s business community attended the ‘Vision for Movement – one year on’ briefing to hear how the last 12 months have seen high profile transport projects forge ahead.

These include the £65 million runway extension at Birmingham airport, a £127 million extension of the Midland Metro tram through the heart of the city centre, and the £600 million Gateway redevelopment of new Street Station. Centro also reported that planning and design work is progressing on a £11 million rapid transit system, known as Birmingham Sprint, which will run from Five Ways to Walsall along Broad Street.

other schemes include a £14 million reorganisation of the city’s bus services, which will see stops being moved from early in the new year to allow the construction of six new passenger’s interchanges, and a £3 million project

called Birmingham Interconnect, which features new direction signs and information points featuring maps and public transport details.

all of the projects have been earmarked for completion by 2015.

Gary Taylor, Chairman of the Broad Street BId, said: “The city and the region have to maximise the chance of attracting new investment and a return to growth. Transport is a major factor in investment decisions and a catalyst for growth.

“a key priority for the Broad Street BId is getting the new Birmingham Sprint rapid transit system to link the Broad Street area to the wider city centre. I am delighted to report that design work is progressing alongside the preparation of an outline business case. our partners at the city council and Centro are committed to having the first line up and running by 2015.”

Two new faces have joined the Broad Street BId’s Board of directors.

Martin French, local Ceo at natwest, joined the Board at the beginning of august, replacing Lee archer, while Clive Burgess, of West Midlands Police,

replaced Chris McKeogh in november.

Like all of our Board directors, both bring with them a wealth of knowledge from their respective business areas and we look forward to working closely with them.

Students from King edward’s School Birmingham have been given an insight into the role of contractors and engineers, thanks to Shaylor Construction and nolan associates.

Shaylor is building a £7.1 million new Performing arts Centre for King edward’s School Birmingham and its sister school, King edward VI High School for Girls, edgbaston. nolan associates is the principle designer involved in the scheme.

a series of educational workshops is being provided for a group of eight pupils at KeS. It involves advising

the students on general structural engineering principles and tasking them with calculations for various sections of the build on site. The students then follow the construction process through to see how the calculations translate into actual construction.

darren Green, Senior Project Manager at Shaylor, said: “This is a fantastic project which enables us to engage with the teachers and pupils in a worthwhile activity. The boys enjoy learning and we are also contributing to the curriculum.”

Jim Lockley, associate director at nolans, said: “The Performing arts Centre is quite a complex project, so is an ideal framework for which to base the structural engineering workshops on. We also had a couple of students with us over the summer undertaking work

experience, which enables them to learn more about a career in the construction industry.”

The Performing arts Centre will provide a concert hall that will seat an audience of 400 and a performance space to accommodate an orchestra of 90. In addition, there is a separate drama studio that will seat 125, and a wide variety of rooms for teaching and rehearsal.

Work on site began in november 2010, and completion is scheduled for early 2012.

the Caribbean and launched four spas in Barbados and St. Lucia. The role in the Caribbean was very rewarding and I learnt so much from my time there about setting up a business, pushing to achieve and mentoring a team.

What attracted you to Hyatt Regency, Broad Street?

Genevieve: after my studies at the Birmingham College of Food and previous work experience in France, I decided to move to Paris so I could continue to work on my French. after two years in Paris, I started working for the Park Hyatt Paris Vendôme, which is a magnificent 5 star hotel in central Paris. I had an amazing opportunity to grow within the company as Hyatt offers excellent career development programmes. earlier this year, I decided after 10 years in Paris it was time to return home to the uK, but I desperately wanted to stay within Hyatt. This is because it is a brand that I truly believe provides first class service and takes care of its employees. I was lucky enough that a position opened up at Hyatt regency Birmingham and where better to return than the same city where I had studied! I have always found this city vibrant and exciting with plenty to do and to work for the best hotel in the city, what more could I ask for?

Paula: Hyatt as a brand is internationally known and delivers a high level of service. To be working within a spa and fitness department within a brand I knew to be one of the best hotel chains to work for in respect of luxury and quality is a great opportunity.

What would you say is your management style / approach to your role?

Genevieve: I never thought that I would become a Sales Manager; I always imagined sales persons to be ruthless and untrustworthy! after years of experience in different departments within a hotel, I decided that, as I know hotels so well, I wanted to share my experience with others and go out to clients and be able to advise them. I believe it’s important to be honest. I take the time to listen and if our product is

not right, I will not trick anyone into doing business with us. I also know the value of getting along and working in teams.

What makes Hyatt Regency stand out?

Genevieve: The Hyatt regency is a landmark in the city centre that you can’t miss when coming to Broad Street. The hotel offers luxury rooms with the best views over the city, superb cuisine in aria restaurant, as well as fantastic cocktails in Bar Pravda.

Paula: our hotel is well known for its traditional style, the fact that it is always immaculate and it has high standards. our recently refurbished amala Spa, with its 16-metre heated pool, fitness facilities and treatment rooms, remains the best kept secret in the city.

What’s been your biggest challenge to date?

Genevieve: I have had so many challenges over the years it’s difficult to know which one to choose! on a personal note, I think moving to France and learning a new language was a huge challenge for me, especially when doing business! In this industry we come across challenges every day and the most rewarding aspect of our job is when the teams pull through together and a guest walks away happy.

Paula: The closure of the swimming pool area for three months. The amala Spa has now re-opened and we have had fabulous feedback from our members. The pool area, the steam room and the sauna were totally renovated and now look amazing.

What are your plans for the future?

Genevieve: It has been just over six months since I returned to the uK so I think I will stick around a little longer! There are many exciting challenges that lie ahead for me at Hyatt regency Birmingham and with a city that is constantly developing, the opportunities are endless. Further down the line, perhaps I would look at participating in one of our new openings as Hyatt is continually developing outstanding new properties.

Paula: I am looking to develop our corporate memberships for the club. I have also introduced a new range of treatments onto our menu - the ‘aromasoul rituals’. The treatments are inspired from ancient techniques from around the world. aromasoul has been developed to offer the ultimate in massage experiences. I shall also be introducing more new treatments in 2012.

What do you see as the benefits to running a business in the BID area?

Genevieve: I have been delighted to discover the BId network and have met some great people at the networking events. I think it offers a real community spirit and we are all able to assist each other in so many ways. The newsletters are so useful and when I meet with clients from other regions it really helps in putting Birmingham back on the map as I not only speak about the hotel, but everything going on in the BId area.

IntroducIng... the new team at hyatt regencyIn this edition we chat to the new ladies at Hyatt regency, Broad Street: Genevieve albarin, Sales Manager, who joined the team last summer after moving from Paris to be here in Birmingham; and Paula Lees, Spa Manager, who joined the team shortly after Genevieve after enjoying a life on the open waves!

How long have you been working in the hotel industry?

Genevieve: I started in the hotel industry 15 years ago completely by accident. I felt that the a-levels I had chosen were not leading me anywhere, so whilst searching for what to do in life I started waitressing part-time in the hotel next door to where I lived in Kent. as time went by, I took on more hours and started to love this whole new world that was opening up to me. My restaurant Manager had spoken to me of various catering courses that were available and it just seemed like the obvious next step. I returned to college to study Hospitality & Catering Management and over the years have had some fantastic opportunities working in various departments ranging from food and beverage, housekeeping, front desk, banquets, event and group management and now sales.

Paula: I have been involved in the spa/fitness/wellness industry for more than 11 years. Before coming to the Hyatt I worked as a Spa Manager on board luxury cruise liners. after seven years at sea, I went to an operational role in

Marketing Birmingham, the city’s strategic marketing partnership, has located to new office space in the city centre. The deal sees 52 staff from the organisation’s base at Millennium Point move to new premises at Baskerville House.

Marketing Birmingham operates the city’s leisure and business tourism programmes, Visit and Meet Birmingham, as well as its inward investment programme, Business Birmingham. Its work with a number of the city’s business organisations

to promote Birmingham nationally and internationally as an investment destination, as well as to support new and potential investors, fuelled the move.

neil rami, Chief executive of Marketing Birmingham, said: “relocating to Baskerville House is a cost-effective move for us and places us in an easily accessible, central location. This is also an important strategic move for Marketing Birmingham. In recent months we have worked with the city’s leading business organisations to position Business Birmingham as a central resource and point of contact for potential and existing investors in the city.”

Marketing Birmingham and six other organisations across the city will be sharing space at Baskerville House to

form the Birmingham Business Hub – a single location that will provide integrated expertise and support for businesses based in the city or looking to move there.

The Hub brings together the following organisations: Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local enterprise Partnership (LeP), Marketing Birmingham, Finance Birmingham, Birmingham Forward, key elements of Birmingham Chamber of Commerce Group, aston reinvestment Trust and Birmingham City Council.

The Birmingham Business Hub will be operated by Marketing Birmingham and be fully operational from early January 2012. In total, up to 120 people from the seven organisations will be based at the Hub.

Mike Whitby, Leader of Birmingham City Council, commented: “The Hub will provide the right environment for collaboration, and sophisticated public-private sector working – enabling people from across Birmingham, and the city region, to share their expertise for the benefit of the entire business community.”

andy Street, Chair of the Greater Birmingham and Solihull LeP, added: “It makes perfect sense for the Greater Birmingham and Solihull LeP to be co-located with other organisations in the city that are dedicated to the economic development of the area. The Hub is a tremendous step forward for the city, providing a front door for companies looking to invest and expand here.”

Back in September, Councillor Mike Whitby, Leader of Birmingham City Council, laid the last piece of concrete on the highest point of the new Library of Birmingham at the official Topping out ceremony. This is a significant marker in the construction of the new £188.8 million building, which is due to open in 2013.Mike Whitby was helped by Buta Singh Mahal, aged 34, from Smethwick. Buta has worked on the site since building work began in February 2010, when he first mixed the concrete for the foundations to be laid. He also mixed the concrete used for the Topping out ceremony.

The Topping out took place on the roof of the rotunda on the summit of the

building, which will eventually house the Shakespeare Memorial room.

The Shakespeare Memorial room will be located alongside a viewing gallery giving panoramic views across the city.

Giles Taylor, a member of the Company of the Birmingham repertory Theatre, began the ceremony by reading two Shakespeare quotes that were suggested by members of the public in a competition on Twitter.

The Topping out was also celebrated with construction partner Carillion and was marked by the first performances in the library’s outdoor amphitheatre in Centenary Square, with an appearance by Black Voices, led by Carol Pemberton, a Face of the new Library of Birmingham; and by members of the company from the reP, who performed extracts from Shakespeare and from Tom Stoppard’s ‘Travesties’, which they were performing at the time.

designed by dutch architects Mecanoo, the Library of Birmingham will comprise ten levels, with nine above ground and

a lower ground floor. The building will feature a spacious entrance and foyer with mezzanine, the gateway to both the library and the Birmingham repertory Theatre, to which the new library will be physically connected. There will also be a new flexible studio theatre, a lower ground level with indoor terraces, four further public levels and two outdoor elevated garden terraces.

a ‘golden box’ of secure archive storage will occupy two levels of the building, within which the city’s internationally significant collection of archives, photography and rare books will be stored. a new state-of-the-art exhibition space will open up public access to the collections for the first time. The exterior of the building, from the first to the eighth floor will be wrapped with an intricate metal façade, echoing the gasometers, tunnels, canals and viaducts which fuelled Birmingham’s industrial growth.

The world’s first photography exhibition underwater ‘Celebrations of the Sea’ took place at Birmingham Sea Life Centre during november.

Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society, a charity founded in 1839 to provide financial support to former seafarers, launched the exhibition in honour of ‘unsung heroes of the sea’. It was sponsored by canned seafood manufacturer John West.

The unique gallery featured images of people carrying out their ‘day jobs’ underwater. The unusual images were submerged in the aquarium’s tanks alongside the living marine life.

Produced by acclaimed marine photographer Kate Westaway, photographs included personalities such as TV presenter dan Snow, TV chef Mitch Tonks, TV wildlife presenter ellie Harrison,

world champion cliff diver Gary Hunt, uK surfing champion Tassy Swallow and world-renowned yachtsman Mike Golding oBe.

Birmingham Sea Life Centre spokesperson ellie Cowley said: “Sea Life was delighted to support ‘Celebrations of the Sea’ with the Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society.

“We are constantly looking for new ways to engage visitors with the amazing underwater world. ‘Celebrations of the Sea’ really illustrated the delicate relationship between humans and the sea, and to host the world’s first photography exhibition underwater was a real honour.”

Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society Chief executive, Malcolm Williams, said: “’Celebrations of the Sea’ is a unique and fantastically creative project, which aims to honour the maritime industry’s unsung heroes. These include the fishermen who brave the uK’s stormiest seas, to traditional lobster pot makers who keep precious fishing traditions alive and our most talented chefs who turn the fish caught out at sea into the nation’s favourite dishes.

“We are incredibly excited to have worked with a photographer of Kate’s calibre on this project. Hopefully it will go some way to not only showcasing the variety of professions involved with the sea in the uK today, but will support donations to the charity to help those former mariners who have given so much and are now in need.

“We would also like to thank our sponsors, John West and CeVa Logistics, without whom the exhibition would not have been possible.”

More than 95 per cent of all Britain’s imports and exports are still transported by sea and the £37 billion uK maritime sector directly employs over 250,000 people - more than aerospace and agriculture combined. all donations generated from the exhibition will go to the Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society.

In the last 12 months alone, 2,644 former seafarers across the country benefited from £1.5 million of grants from the society, but help for this vulnerable community is very much in demand, particularly in the current harsh economic environment.

We take an exclusive look at what will be on offer throughout 2012 at the Brindleyplace gallery.

Stuart Whipps Why Contribute to The Spread of Ugliness? 30th november 2011 – 5th February 2012

Birmingham-based photographer Stuart Whipps is interested in questions of beauty, value and legacy. For his exhibition at Ikon, Whipps presents a number of new video and photographic works. The storage of more than 400 archive boxes from the John Madin design Group in the basement of Birmingham’s Central Library has inspired a multi-screen slide projection, while Whipps continues his interest in issues around the formation of Snowdonia national Park.

John Myers Middle England 30th november 2011 – 5th February 2012

Ikon’s exhibition features Myers’ photographs from series made throughout the early 1970s, including Middle england (1970-1974), a selection of portraits of individuals and families close to Myers, living in and around Stourbridge. Myers’ approach is documentary in style, but the images speak to us of value, of the self perceptions and aspirations of his subjects and the spaces they occupy, as well as of the artist himself.

dublin-based artist Sarah Browne’s works with small communities of people to create and document diverse forms of non-market exchange such as gift economies, subsistence, subsidies and poaching. using processes such as sculpture, filmmaking and publishing, she seeks out the potential for a radical kind of resourcefulness as a creative form of opposition. This survey, Browne’s first solo exhibition in the uK, runs parallel to the development of a new work, Scarcity radio, with the Ikon youth Programme and Slow Boat.

Hamish Fulton 15th February – 22nd april 2012

This exhibition, a major collaboration between Ikon and Turner Contemporary, Margate, is the first museum show for British artist Hamish Fulton since his retrospective at Tate Britain in 2002. Fulton describes himself as a “walking artist”, with his work joining the two separate disciplines of walking and art. The exhibition consists of wall drawings with text and touches on a range of non-art issues that preoccupy the artist, in particular the call for political independence for Tibet. Fulton also leads a walk specifically for Ikon.

Yto Barrada Riffs 16th May – 8th July 2012

This is the first solo exhibition in the uK by Moroccan artist yto Barrada, whose photographs, films, publications, installations and sculptures engage with the everyday life and times of Tangier, her hometown situated on the Strait of Gibraltar. The title of the show, riffs, simultaneously refers to the musical term, to the Cinéma rif, home of the Tangier Cinémathèque which Barrada directs, and to the nearby rif mountains, a stronghold of anti-colonial insurgency in Morocco.

Bedwyr Williams 16th May – 8th July 2012

Bedwyr Williams observes the world with a sharp eye and wry humour. His work includes a wide range of media, including performance, sculpture, painting and photography, and explores such things as what it means to be an artist living in his native Wales with big feet and a sense of the absurd. Through the flamboyant costumes of his multiple artistic personae, we catch a glimpse of self-revelation, a command of cultural and art-world mythology, as well as a gentle reflection on the human condition. This is the most comprehensive presentation of Williams’ work to date in the uK.

Boyd & Evans 18th July – 9th September 2012

artist couple Boyd and evans have been working together since 1968. Their paintings, while highly representational, have a perspective, scale and composition that often edge closer to the surreal. The air feels thin, time frozen and gravity suspended in their dreamlike pictures. Photography has also become more central to their work in recent years, with shocks of colour penetrating landscapes of the american Southwest. With selections from over 40 years of their work together, Ikon is proud to present Boyd and evans’ first major survey exhibition.

BrmB’S lIve 2011 IS a roarIng SucceSS!

Food and drInKCuLTure

reviewed by Caroline ashton

Sometimes a cold sandwich does not cut if for lunch! occasionally, you need to break free from your desk and enjoy a little me-time for an hour. one such Monday I walked over to Brindleyplace, with a magazine under my arm and headed straight to yo Sushi! for a quiet lunch.

Me, myself and I (plus said magazine) sat at the bar area, which was comfortable for a simple lunch and was not as unnerving as sitting in a big empty booth when you are without a plus one.

The staff were friendly and attentive and explained carefully how everything works, what the offer of the day was (in this instance Blue Monday – all dishes on the belt were £2.30), and took my drink order.

Then it was just me and the famous yo Sushi! belt!

The menu is ideal for when you can’t quite put your finger on what you want. The conveyor belt of gorgeous dishes passing you by can be quite hypnotic, so I thought the best thing to do was to try a bit of everything and anything. The belt provides fresh, quick food from the minute you sit down – essential when you’ve fewer than 60 minutes to get somewhere, eat, relax and get back. So I tucked straight in!

I started with a light salmon maki and then ordered a vegetable yakisoba, which was lovely and warming for the chilly weather, but light enough so that I didn’t feel too full. I followed this with the tangy delights of beef tataki, a refreshing kaiso salad, and finished it off with a gorgeous dorayaki dessert.

If I hadn’t run out of time (and magazine articles) I could have happily continued picking my way through the other dishes available because everything looks amazingly tasty and very tempting. I loved watching the cooks in the kitchen, which is right in the middle of the bar area, preparing food in front of you.

The great thing about yo Sushi! is that whether you are there to eat a quick snack or have the time to enjoy a full Japanese feast, it can cater for what you want, and how much you want. If you don’t have time to sit down then pop in for a take out, or even order your favourites and have them delivered to your door.

There are many ways to enjoy yo Sushi! Whichever you choose, you won’t be disappointed. I will definitely try the dishes again soon!

BrMB brought seven of the biggest names in music together for one huge, sell out concert at the LG arena in november … and it’s doing it all again in 2012!

Live 2011 saw JLS, The Wanted, Matt Cardle, Tinchy Stryder, James Morrison,

Pixie Lott, Cher Lloyd and emeli Sande all perform on the same stage in one roaring success of a show.

Boy-band favourites, JLS and The Wanted, made the crowd swoon, while Matt Cardle showed exactly why we voted him our favourite on last year’s X Factor. Tinchy Stryder got everyone to their feet and James Morrison belted out the songs he’s most celebrated for. Pixie Lott brought a sweet ‘60s retro feel to the

occasion and local lass Lloyd showed off what she’d been working on since her reality show stint. r&B singer emeli Sande was a surprise hit of the night. She performed her debut solo single, which earned her a few thousand new fans.

our listed premises are finished in achingly chic fabrics and colours that complement the fine music, flashing lights and refreshing drinks

There are two very different rooms that will match your moods, from the dancing and prancing of the Main room, to the quiet, elegant and filled with panache, o Below. We consider o Below to be our best kept secret – hidden beneath o Bar, it is used primarily for our VIPs, private parties and even music videos. It’s perfect for all events and with a chilly few months looming, don’t get left in the cold with nowhere to go. Book your cosy night out with us for an unforgettable experience.

The Atmosphere

Make no mistake, we are situated in the heart of hustle and the bustle of Broad Street, but you’ll still find an intimate evening waiting if you wish. With a sharp

dress sense and a cheeky smile, you will fit right in with us.

If you tire of the super clubs and the generic city bars, stop by and see what all the fuss is about; we are small enough to be intimate, but plenty big enough for a spectacular night out.

We are proud to be one of Broad Street’s independent bars and our loyal army of regulars will be only too happy to welcome you to their ranks.

With a set of guest spots from the city’s top dJs and celebrity guests, we host a very eclectic music policy, ranging from 90s classics to the latest in urban sounds.

The Drink

our drinks selection cannot be beaten, from a thirst quenching pint to the elite of elites. endorsed by none other than Jay Z himself, the ace of Spades is the king of all Champagnes and we are proud to say we are one of the only venues in the city that you’ll find this prestigious Champagne.

our fresh handmade cocktails range from the tall and sexy Cosmopolitan and oh-so-sweet Sherbertini to the classically refreshing Mojito and the zany blue and green ninja Turtle!

Come and spend a night with us and discover for yourself!

we make Jo a culInary StarIn September, the Broad Street Business Improvement district, in conjunction with Birmingham Food Fest, launched its search to find and educate Birmingham’s worst cook.

an exciting and unique prize was offered to the winner – to learn the skills behind a whole host of dishes from the traditional balti and Italian classics to fine dining. not only that, the winner would learn from Birmingham’s best – five of the top chefs from Broad Street and Brindleyplace restaurants.

as well as the unique cookery lessons the winner was also promised a shopping spree for new kitchen equipment worth £250 from red rob Catering Supplies in Birmingham city centre.

after much deliberating over the hundreds of entries received, Joanne Broomhall-ellis was unveiled as the winner. The mother of six was nominated by her own mum for her knack of burning everything and for being an absolute disaster in the kitchen.

Joanne’s first lesson was with Simon Bishop, executive Chef director of Branded Bull on Broad Street, where she learnt how to whip up an extraordinary beef Wellington.

Joanne’s nerves quickly disappeared when Simon took her through all the stages of the traditional dish. Her confidence quickly grew and the dish came together with ease. Simon taught Jo the very basics, including peeling the potatoes for the accompanying mash, what makes the best pancake preparation and the all important rolling of the pastry!

our ‘worst cook’ then spent time with critically-acclaimed chef, andy Waters, from edmunds. andy showed Joanne the steps to preparing a mouth-watering pasta dish, which was both easy to prepare and great for all the family to eat. She also got a great insight into different cooking techniques and skills that the chefs use after spending the Friday lunchtime rush in the kitchen with the edmunds’ team.

Joanne’s latest lesson saw her in the kitchens of the Hyatt regency, where executive Chef Brett Sandland prepared a belly of pork and explained the different cooking methods and recipes she could prepare for her and the children.

Chefs still to take Birmingham’s worst – but rapidly improving - cook under their wing include Bishal rasaily, of Pushkar, and Shimla Pinks’ abdul Ishral.

A Business Improvement District (or BID) is a defined area within which the local business community work together and invests collectively in new projects and services that have been prioritised to address opportunities and problems that affect businesses, staff and clients.

BID services are carried out in addition to the services provided by the local authority.

The Broad Street BID is fundedby local businesses that have arateable value of more than £10,000. They contribute to the BID through a levy, which is based on a percentage of their rateable value. The BID has raised in excess of £1.7million in its first five year term, which has been invested entirely on improvements in the businessenvironment.

In addition to the levy, the BIDalso attracts substantial voluntarycontributions from propertyowners and developers inthe area.
