Introduction

Cultural management & the digital shift -

Using the digital process to reach out and in-

crease participation.

Digitalization� has� profoundly� transformed� cul-

ture� and� arts� in� terms� of� production,� creation�

and� cultural� participation.� Contemporary� cul-

tural workers need to manage and develop their

digital skills and competencies in order to be

part�of�the�knowledge�society,�and�to�work�to-

wards�the�modernisation�of�cultural�centres�and�

the�empowerment�of�their�communities.�

This theme will intersect with cultural manage-

ment,�a�very�popular�topic�among�BECC�partic-

ipants,�embracing� the�personal�predispositions�

and�interests�in�the�fields�of�professional�devel-

opment�and�culture.�This�part�of�the�training�will�

be�enriched�with�elements�of�coaching.�

The ENCC prepared the programme in collabo-

ration�with� trainers� Dagna� Gmitrowicz� (PL/DE,�

Erasmus+� Agency� trainer,� Facilitator� and� certi-

fied� Art-Therapist),� Katrin� Reiter� (AT,� Strategic�

developer and planner for IKULT and Coordi-

nator�and�public�relations�planner�of�the�Guid-

ance� Network� Salzburg)� and� Andrea� Folie� (AT,�

Founder/Owner� IKULT,� Intercultural� projects�

and� concepts,� project� manager� “Arrivingtour�

QUERBEET” Gemeindeentwicklung at Salzburg-

er Bildungswerk, Management assistant of the

umbrella�association�for�Salzburgs�cultural�sites,�

board�member�of�the�cultural�advisory�board�of�

the�province�of�Salzburg).

For�this��2018�edition,�thanks�to�the�support�of�

EC�Programme�Creative�Europe,� the�ENCC�was�

able to invite 10 colleagues from 10 European

countries�for�an�8-months-long�learning�journey�

with�two�main�activities:�the�group�kickoff�Semi-

nar�in�Andros�island,�and�the�individual�mobility�

programme� (minimum�7� days� for� each� partici-

pant).

BECC Seminar 2018

The� three-day�meeting�offers�different� formats�

that� empower� participants� in� their� process-

orientated� learning� journey.� The� Seminar� is�

also a moment to make choices about partner

organisations� for� exchanges.� The� additional�

study� visits� help� learn� about� local� context� and�

cultural�activities�in�Greece.

BECC AS A LEARNING EXPERIENCE

by�Dagna�Gmitrowicz

I�invite�you�for�a�self-directed�learning�journey,�

which� starts� now� (the� moment� you� read� this�

introduction),�and�ends�at�the�evaluation�phase�

of�this�project.

I� will� offer� different� tools� to� support� your�

self-reflection,� self-assessment� and� self-

empowerment�in�the�context�of�your�professional�

development.� Moreover,� I� will� stimulate� the�

group� process� underlying� the� importance� of� a�

learning� community� and� stimulating� creativity�

grounded�in�micro-interactions.�You�may�expect�

individual work, small chats with me, work with

your�learning�peers�and�within�the�whole�group.

USING THE DIGITAL PROCESS FOR REACHING OUT AND INCREASING PARTICIPATION

The spirit that guides the training will be

collaboration:�get�in�contact,�share�experiences�

and� knowledge,� explore� new� tools� and� digital�

possibilities,� expand� your� network,� learn� from�

each�other,�get�ideas�for�participative�audience�

work.��

The� training�will� be�participative,� there�will� be�

space� to� develop� and� experiment� crossmedia�

together,�in�action.�Some�people�will�contribute�

to� the� training� online� and� there� is� a� field� trip�

planned� to� get� inspiration� and� insights� from�

outside.

The focus is on the process and the power of

strategic networking in an analog and digital

way,� during� the� entire� workshop� days� as� well�

as�the�digital�shift�trainings.�We�involve�people,�

their� knowledge,� experience,� skills� and� needs.�

The� participants� will� get� in� touch� with� their�

vision,� share� their� ideas,� tools� and� projects,�

explore� possibilities,� make� connections,� scout�

their space, focus on their target groups and

multipliers,� and� expand� their� services,� always�

keeping�in�mind�the�strategic�red�line.�Exploring�

and�expanding�skills�is�the�topic.

The�following�questions�will�be�guiding�us:

strategically?�

-�what�is�our�content?

-� how� can� digital� tools� support� my� goal,� my�

project,�my�team,�my�community?

-� how� can� I� reach� different� targets,� a� new�

audience?

The workshop structure:

space�and�how�to�manage�these�strategically�to�

keep�the�focus�and�achieve�our�communication�

goals

My� passion� lies� in� art� and� cultural� mediation� for� theatre,�

concerts,� school� projects� and� more.� I� create� intercultural�

and�intermedial�participation�models�for�local�communities�

and� educational� and� cultural� associations,� and� I� develop�

strong�national�and�international�networks�(both�digital�and�face-to-face)�between�

them.�Digital�tools�are�interesting�instruments�to�expand�horizons�and�open�new�

communication�possibilities.

It�is�a�fact�-�the�digital�shift�is�changing�our�lives�and�our�business�structures.�There�

is�no�way�around�it:�we�must�create�digital�concepts.�In�the�end,�it�always�comes�

down�to�project-specific�questions�:�How�we�can�reach�new�audiences?�How�can�

we�create�networks�with�the�resources�that�we�have�(time�and�members)?�Finding�

answers�to�those�questions�is�one�of�my�strengths.

I�am�a�visual�artist,�facilitator,�coach,�therapist�and�process�

designer who creates meaningful learning spaces at confer-

ences,�workshops�and�in�my�studio.�I�strongly�believe�in�and�

support�a�collaborative�work�culture�–�one�that�uses�the�potential�and�strengths�

of�everyone�and�taps�into�the�collective�creativity�of�the�group.�Just�recently�I’ve�

created�new�methods� supporting� the�empowerment�of� those�who�come� from�

less�privileged�groups.�In�particular�I�was�working�on�two�methods:�‘visual�con-

versations’�for�Sparckatcher�project�and�‘street�stimulation’�for�Occupy�Learning.�

I�have�also�worked,�among�others,�with:�Erasmus�+�National�Agencies,�Euroguid-

ance,�Bundesvereinigung�Kulturelle�Kinder-�und� Jugendbildung� (BKJ),�Cabuwazi�

-�pedagogical�circus,�the�ENCC�and�other�NGOs�from�throughout�Europe.�I�also�

co-manage�my�own�cultural�foundation�in�Poland.�I�now�work�and�live�in�Berlin.

It’s�all�about�creation.�I�love�to�look�behind�the�scenes,�bring�

structures�into�question�and�connect�people�with�different�

backgrounds.� I� am� a� strategic� networker� and� developer�

in� the� field� of� intercultural� and� intermedia� education.�My�

speciality� is� connecting�people� from�different� institutions�and�giving� them�time�

and�space�for�participative�conception�and�strategic�development.�In�recent�years,�

content�marketing�and�thinking�from�the�perspective�of�the�audience�has�become�

increasingly�important,�as�well�as�the�question�‘How�can�we�reach�people?’.�This�

in�turn�is�changing�organisations’�structures.�The�driving�force�of�those�changes�is�

the�new�ways�of�communication�brought�by�the�digital�shift.�Digital�networking�is�

a�huge�playground�for�interacting,�communicating�and�thinking�in�a�different�way.�

And�that�is�an�unprecedented�opportunity�as�well�as�a�challenge�which�calls�for�

strategic�thinking,�evolving,�resource-sharing�and�continuous�networking.

Slovenia

I am the head of Cultural

Centre Cerknica, since

March� 2017.� I� finished� a�

PhD�in�dramaturgy�at�the�Academy�of�Theatre,�

Radio,� Film� and� Television� in� Ljubljana,� after�

an� Erasmus� at� DAMU,� Prague.� I’ve�worked� as�

a� researcher� on� theatrical� pedagogy� and� art�

education� within� the� Slovene� school� system.�

I’ve� also� worked� as� a� theatre� critic,� theatre�

director� for� my� independent� projects,� and�

mentor�for�amateur�theatre�groups.

My� long-term� goal� is� to� position� our� local�

cultural centre on the map of professional

artistic�production,�and�to�make�this�perspective�

relevant to our local inhabitants as well as to

professional�artists.�

KULTURNI DOM CERKNICA

Cultural centre Cerknica is a small cultural centre

in�Notranjska�region,�Slovenia.�The�centre�was�

renovated� and� reopened� in� 2006.� Since� 2017,�

we’ve�redesigned�our�centre’s�graphic�identity,�

built a new webite and brought changes to

organisation�and�programming.

The� building� has� a� maximum� capacity� of� 240�

visitors.� The� staff� is� made� up� of� the� director,�

a� technician,� a� coordinator,� a� janitor� and�

several� hostesses� (students).� We� schedule�

10 to 30 events per month: concerts, theatre

performances, movies, school events and

children’s�theatre.

Our� centre� can� offer� interesting� perspectives�

on� collaborative� decision� making,� on� the� use�

of� digital� tools� (web� page� and� FB)� and� other�

communication� tools� to� get� a� maximum�

response�from�the�audience,�but�maybe�mainly�

on� the� artistic� programme,� which� (for� now)�

effectively� combines� tradition� (local� needs)�

with�contemporary�artistic�projects.

I have been working

at cultural centre

Seefelder Mühle for one

year�now.�My�job�as�a�managing�director� is�to�

take� care� of� structural� and� financial� aspects,�

but� more� importantly� to� design� a� cultural�

program�that�is�unique�yet�easy�to�relate�to�in�a�

rural�area.�This�year�is�dedicated�to�the�topic�of�

sustainability,�with�a�creative�and�participatory�

approach.�There�will�be�an�online�blog�updated�

by�the�community,�a�theatre�production�about�

garbage, and other events like movie nights and

workshops.

THE SEEFELDER MÜHLE has a strong

participatory� background.� It� was� founded� by�

volunteers�as�an�association�to�bring�culture�to�

a�rural�area,�and�it�still�has�the�spirit�of�making�

things�possible.�Our�program�is�always�attuned�

to involving and empowering locals through

culture.�We�run�a�cultural�program�with�events,�

but�we�always�design�projects�as�well.�Last�year�

we�had� a� successful� artist-in-residence� project�

which�created�a�new�form�of�event�in�our�village.�

It�brought� the�people� together�with�an�artistic�

touch�and�great�ideas.�I�would�like�to�share�our�

experiences� with� this� kind� of� project-based�

work.

I’m� the� sociocultural�

worker� at� community�

centre� De� Kriekelaar� in� Schaarbeek,� Brussels.�

I� am� a� very� enthousiastic� and� creative� guy,�

good�at� coordinating�big� and� small� events� for�

a�local�community.�My�favourite�project�within�

my�organization�is�the�New�Year’s�party,�which�

is� attended� by� over� 700� people!� Lots� of� local�

artists� and� cooks� come� to� perform� their� skills�

for�the�community�of�Schaarbeek.�Another�one�

of�my�favourite�projects�is�SPRING1030,�a�3-day�

multilingual� family-festival� for� children� (0-14�

years)�about�art,�play�and�inclusion.

COMMUNITY CENTRE DE KRIEKELAAR

My� organization� is� a� community� center.� We�

successfully�built�our�own�website,�have�coding�

and hologram classes for children, and use

Instagram,� Facebook� and� Whatsapp� in� a� very�

THE WESTERN DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION

is� a� regional� body� that� deals� with� the� socio-

economic� development� of� seven� counties� in�

Ireland: Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon,

Mayo,� Galway� and� Clare.� There� are� 3� units�

within the WDC: Investment Fund, Regional

Development� and� Policy� Analysis.� EU� projects�

are a self-standing area falling under Regional

Development.�We�have�experience�in�EU�project�

THEATRE ARABESKY

Kharkiv� theater� «Arabesky”� is� not� a� usual� repertoire�

theatre, which stages entertaining performances to please

the�audience�or� for�box-office�success.�We�have�always�

understood�the�theatre�as�a�local�seat�of�democracy�that�

brings�up�important�and�painful�topics�for�society,�has�an�

expressive� civic� position� and� covers� priority� questions.�

We�also�constantly�organize�educational�projects�aimed�

at� combatting� de-intellectualization� and� increasing� the�

competitiveness� of� the�Ukrainian� theatre� among� young�

professionals�(90%�of�our�actors,�managers�and�curators�

are� under� 30).� We� run� exchange� programs� for� young�

professionals� with� partner� organizations� from� Poland,�

Germany,� Austria,� the� United� Kingdom� and� the� United�

States.� In� 2018,� we�want� to� start� a� project� to� increase�

the� involvement�of�Kharkiv�citizens� in�our�activity.�We’ll�

also� be� launching� projects� dedicated� to� people� who�

fulfil� socially� important� functions� on� a� daily� basis,� such�

as�teachers,�doctors,�police,�judges,�military,�volunteers,�

journalists.
