Welcometoourtrain-the-trainer(T3)facilitatortrainingprogramfortheLEGO®SERIOUSPLAY™methodology.LEGOSERIOUSPLAYisamethodologyforexploringanddealingwithrealissuesandchallengesinrealtime.Itisnotatrainingcourseyouattend.Itisascience-basedprocessanddrawsonextensiveresearchfromthefieldsofbusiness,organizationaldevelopment,psychologyandlearning.LEGOSERIOUSPLAY(LSP)isafacilitatedprocess,andtheresultsandimpactaredirectlytiedtothequalityofthefacilitation.TheobjectivewithourLSPfacilitator-trainingprogramistoprovidethefacilitatorwiththeinsights,confidenceandcommitmentsnecessarytoprepareandfacilitatetheLEGOSERIOUSPLAYprocessinawaythatgivesmaximumvaluetotheend-userandhaslastingimpact.LEGOSERIOUSPLAYwasfirstlaunchedendof2002.TheideatouseLEGObricksforbusinesspurposessawitsfirstlightin1995.From1995–1999JohanRoosandBartVictorexperimentedwiththeideawithoutmuchsuccess.In1999RobertRasmussengotinvolved,whichresultedinthedevelopmentofversion1.0oftheLSPmethodspearheadedandmanagedbyRobertRasmussen.In2006–2007RobertRasmussendevelopedversion2.0oftheLSPmethod.Thisversionisdescribedinthebook“BuildingaBetterBusinessUsingtheLEGOSERIOUSPLAYMethod”byPerKristiansenandRobertRasmussen(Wiley,2014,NewJersey)Thetrain-the-trainerprogramisaimedatpeoplealreadyfamiliarwithsomeleveloffacilitation.Itisidealforprofessionalconsultants,coaches,trainers,educators,researchersaswellasin-housetrainers,learninganddevelopmentspecialists,HRstaff,andteamleaders.TheLEGOSERIOUSPLAYtrain-the-trainerprogramisdevelopedandmaintainedbyTheAssociationofMasterTrainersintheLEGOSERIOUSPLAYmethodologyofwhichRobertisoneofthefoundingmembers.Sincerely,

Introduction

TheLEGOSERIOUSPLAYmethodology(LSP)isafacilitatedthinking,communicationandproblemsolvingtechniqueforusewithorganizations,teamsandindividuals.Itdrawsonextensiveresearchfromthefieldsofbusiness,organizationaldevelopment,psychologyandlearning,andisbasedontheconceptof“handknowledge.”

Itisbasedonasetoffundamentalbeliefsaboutleadershipandorganizations

• Leadersdon’thavealltheanswers.• Theirsuccessisdependentonhearing

allvoicesintheroom• Peoplenaturallywanttocontribute,

bepartofsomethingbiggerandtakeownership

• Allowingeachmembertocontributeandspeakoutresultsinamoresustainablebusiness

Itisbasedonthesebeliefsthatthemethodologyhasdevelopedintoacoherentparadigmbasedonthecoreprocessandthesevenapplicationtechniques.

TheCoreProcess(fig1)TheCoreProcessisasthecenteroftheLEGOSERIOUSPLAYprocess;itisthesourcecodethatinessencedefinesthatsomethingisindeedLEGOSERIOUSPLAY.TheLSPProcesshasfouressentialsteps:

Step1PosingtheQuestion:Thechallenge,whichshouldhavenoobviousorcorrectsolution,ispresentedtotheparticipants.Theframingofthechallengehastobeclearandconcisefortheparticipanttoconnect.Step2Construct:Theparticipantsmakesenseofwhattheyknowandwhattheycanimagine.TheydothisbyconstructingamodelusingtheLEGOmaterials,anddevelopingastorycoveringthemeaninginthemodel.Throughthatprocess,theyconstructnewknowledgeintheirminds.Step3Sharing:Themeaningofthemodelandthestoriesaresharedbetweentheparticipants.

Step4Reflect:Asawayofinternalizingandgroundingthestory,reflectionuponwhatwasheardorseeninthemodel,isencouraged.ForaworkshopbasedonLEGOSERIOUSPLAYtobesuccessful,itisindispensablethattheparticipantsarecomfortablewiththecoreprocess.

AllapplicationsoftheLEGOSERIOUSPLAYmethodologymakeuseoftheabovecoreprocessandoneormoreofsevenLSPprocesslayers.Eachofthesevenapplicationtechniquesisbasedonmasteringthepreviousone(s).Thehigherthenumber(1–7)themorecomplexproblemtheapplicationtechniquewillhelpyouaddress.Thecomplexityincreasesnotonlyintermsofwhatproblemcanbeaddressed,butalsointermsofhowthecoreprocessisapplied,i.e.howthefacilitatordesignsandfacilitates.Thefullfacilitator-trainingprogramgivesyouanin-depthtraininginhowtodesignandfacilitateworkshopsusingallsevenapplicationtechniques.

ThetrainerfortheLSPfacilitator-trainingprogramisRobertRasmussen.Heisaneducatorandbusinessconsultant.Previously,hewastheDirectorofResearchandDevelopmentfortheEducationalProductsDivisionoftheLEGOGroupandPresidentofExecutiveDiscovery,theLEGOjointventurechargedwithbringingLEGOSERIOUSPLAYtomarket.Literallyoneofthe"fathers"oftheLEGOSERIOUSPLAYprocess,RobertdevelopedtheoriginalLSPfacilitatorprogramduringhistenureatLEGOfrom2000–2004.Sincethenanduntilthelaunchofthecommunitydistributionmodelspring2010hecontinuedasoneofonlytwomastertrainersforLEGOandhaspersonallytrainedoverfiftypercentoftheglobalcommunityofLEGOSERIOUSPLAYdiplomaholders.Duringthesameperiodhehasalsocontinuedwithextending,optimizingandrefiningtheT3programinclosecooperationwiththeLEGOGroup.ThecurrentT3programincorporates17yearsofcontinuousimprovementsandistodaythemostextensiveandmostusedinallpartsoftheworld.
