ASSOCIATION NEWS

COMMUNITY SYMPATHIES The July association meeting was cancelled due to the tragic

death of Ross Maciver, formerly of Callanish, which had a

huge impact on the community. The Chair wished to Min-

ute the community‘s appreciation of Ross‘s input to the

community and extended the community‘s sympathy to his

mother Maryann and his brothers, Andrew and Morris.

Sympathy is also extended to the family of Peggy Macleod,

9 Callanish who passed away during the summer break.

RETIREMENT

A happy retirement goes to our former Head teacher Mrs

Anne Macleod after 31 years excellent service at Breasclete

Primary. The Chair welcomed new Head teacher Jayne

Macdonald to her first association meeting and wished her a

happy and successful time at the school and stated that the

association are available at any time to discuss any issues

she may have regarding the school.

LOOP SYSTEM The loop system has been installed in the Main Hall, Club

Room and Games Room. Total cost of this system is

£2000, the Community Council are contributing £900 and

the ABC Club have been awarded funding to contribute

towards the cost.

ASSOCIATION LOGO The Parent Council are looking into costing for two flag

poles and two flags. Update at next meeting.

SCHOOL GARDEN

There is a wish to get the school garden up and running

again if there are funds available. The Parent Council are to

investigate funding avenues. It was suggested to try the

CNAG Regeneration Scheme, as they had funds available

earlier in the year. The Lewis and Harris Horticultural Pro-

ducers also have a scheme running along with certain

schools, getting them involved with growing vegetables etc,

and are available for providing support and advice. It was

suggested to bear this in mind for next year – Parent Coun-

cil to research further.

BROADBAND There have been problems with the Titan broadband ac-

count since the changeover of bank accounts. The direct

debit was not picked up due to the new account set-up.

Caroline agreed to sort payment issues with Titan.

OLD CANTEEN BUILDING

It was agreed at previous meetings that the preferred option

for the old canteen building is demolition. As Anne

Macleod had previous dealings with the Council regarding

the demolition of the building, Jayne MacDonald agreed to

take over this matter with the Education department.

MAINTENANCE LIFT - Kenny has been in touch with the lift maintenance

company and there is no reason why the ―on‖ switch for the

lift cannot be located downstairs for easier access – Kenny

to organise.

DOOR HANDLE – New door handle is required for the

side door – Kenny to organise.

FINANCE Since changing bank details, account name and account

number, the association have now got one account instead

of three. Our finance total at present stands at approxi-

mately £10,000.

UPDATE ON FINANCIAL SITUATION

RBS - 70% of the loan has been repaid to the bank with a

further amount due to be paid off over next few weeks.

Kenny has drafted a letter of complaint to Mr Hester, Chief

Executive of RBS stating our dissatisfaction with the ser-

vice we received when applying for an overdraft/loan.

CENTRE EXTENSION UPDATE The new extension is working well - roller doors for the

wash area cupboards to be ordered and fitted when UBC

comes back to complete gym area. There is an odour com-

ing from the kitchen which is linked to the draining taps –

Kenny to notify UBC

We have received an estimate of £681 + VAT from Bardon

Aggregates for tarmac and slabs from the carpark to the

backdoor.

COMMITTEE DECISION: The Committee agreed to

accept the quote from Bardon Aggregate -Kenny to ad-

vice Bardon’s of decision.

EVENTS COMMITTEE

The next Events meeting will be on Monday 20th Septem-

ber at 7.20pm. The next wedding is to take place on 1st Oc-

tober.

PROPOSED GYM

We have been pledged four items of equipment from Ionad

Spors Leodhas due to the refurbishment of their gym. The

items include 1 treadmill, 1 cross trainer and 2 upright cy-

cles. A decision is required to be taken on the location of

they gym area; upstairs in the male shower/changing room

or downstairs in the new build. Disabled access is required

for the upstairs location and a stair-lift would be considered

as a reasonable adjustment. The floor would require

strengthening - Kenny to check with SRDP if altering the

gym location impacts on our application as the original plan

was to locate the gym in the new build.

COMMITTEE DECISION: It was agreed to locate the

gym area upstairs on the basis that it would not have an

impact on our funding application. The committee also

agreed that a stair lift would be reasonable adjustments

for disabled access and that its use would be monitored.

THANK YOU CARD

A ‗thank you‘ card received from Mr & Mrs Clelland on the

occasion of their wedding held in the hall recently.

PERFORMANCE GRANT 2010/2011

Performance Grant application form has been received from

Community Education – Anne to complete and return.

NORTH LOCHS MEDICAL PRACTICE

Nurse Craggs is retiring from North Lochs

Medical Practice on Friday and it was

agreed to send her a gift on behalf of the

association.

a one off job or a regular clean every 4, 8 or 12 weeks.

COMANN EACHDRAIDH

Make a note of it: Wednesday, October 13 at 8 o’clock

Yes, that‘s a long way ahead—in fact, the Wednesday after the Callanish Ordaighean — but we want to make sure you

book the date. Write it down now, somewhere you‘re bound to notice it, because we hope as many as possible of you will

remember to turn up, especially those of you who come only occasionally. If there‘s time, we‘ll remind you in the Octo-

ber newsletter, but to be safe, note it NOW!

Unfortunately we had to cancel the September meeting at short notice because of an unforeseen clash of dates, but al-

though it was regrettable it didn‘t matter too much, as we had nothing out of the ordinary planned.

This time, however, we hope all goes well as we have a special speaker coming to meet us: Katie Anne Maciver of the

new CNES Archive Service team will be coming to tell us about this exciting new project which seems to be concentrat-

ing not so much on how we can help them, but on how they can help us! We should also hear some of the exciting things

other Comainn Eachdraidh are achieving.

It should be an invigorating and inspiring evening — don‘t miss it. And there‘s that special balgam to look forward to, as

well. Come and bring your friends at

8 o’clock, Wednesday, October 13

WALKING THE TALK IN OBAN (photos on front page)

This year the Walkie Talkie Group took the road to Oban. We stayed in Connel, a small village 6 miles out of Oban.

On the first full day (Tuesday) of our walking holiday the Group decided to go to the island of Lismore. To get to Lis-

more we had to take a short ferry run from Port Appin. Port Appin is a small village with one hotel at the pier and maybe

two shops and a handful of houses. The scenery is spectacular.

When we arrived at the pier there was already a queue waiting for the ferry. The residents of Lismore do their shopping

on the mainland. What a hassle! Imagine having to take a ferry across to the mainland, then transport to the shops, there

and back, having to wait at the pier for the return journey home and then finally having to cart your shopping on to the

ferry at Port Appin and on arriving in Lismore having to load your car with groceries or whatever. (Naa)

After waiting an hour, it was decided that the sea was just a tad choppy. We can walk and talk in all weathers but sailing

requires excellent conditions - some of us are not good sailors, even if it is only five minutes on the ferry! The decision

was taken to leave our Lismore outing for another day. Instead we explored Oban itself and took a walk towards an un-

used priory, a beautiful walk.

On Wednesday the weather was excellent for our visit to the Isle of Kerrera. Beautiful landscape. Not much traffic on

the roads. After walking for three or four miles we arrived at an old croft house where we had refreshments. While we

were eating, the resident chickens wandered around under the tables. (Not good). One person in our group hates chick-

ens! Guess what! They loved her. We had planned to walk round the island but we were told that the path was very diffi-

cult in parts, so, sticking to the route was advised and after getting lost in Shawbost only a few weeks ago, straying from

the path is not a good idea!

When we arrived back at the pier for our return to Oban the ferry was just arriving. For some in the group it is more dif-

ficult to keep up the same pace as the rest. The ferry was just drawing away from the pier when we asked the ferryman

(Duncan) if he would go back for the others as they had just arrived at the pier. No problem for Duncan. He turned the

ferry round to pick them up. What a hero!

On Thursday we eventually made it to Lismore. Hooray! Again we had stunning weather. We had walked a few miles

when we came across a crofter in distress. He was transferring sheep from one field to another. He had a young lad with

him and a couple of sheepdogs. No use. There was nothing for it but for Anne (Paddles) and Chrissie Bheag Riverdale to

help the poor man with his flock. You should have seen them! Walking sticks in the air and the two of them making

strange noises. You would have been proud of them. Sheep sorted we went on our way. What a beautiful island. We

must have walked at least seven miles. We all got a little bit sunburnt on our walk that day.

On the Friday it was time to return home. We thoroughly enjoyed the walks and the scenery in and around the Oban area.

We enjoyed it so much we are hoping to return next year to explore more.

CONGRATULATIONS

To David and Jessie

(Garynahine) on their

recent marriage in Inverness.

CALANAIS VISITOR CENTRE NEWS 2010

Another season draws to a close at the Calanais Visitor

Centre and time for some of the hard working staff to go

back to school and college. The picture shows some of

the workers (not working for a change) posing for the

camera before they disperse for the close season. Their

contribution was vital to the success of the Visitor Centre

with positive feed back from the customers about their

helpful, pleasant and caring disposition.

It has been another busy and ultimately successful season

with the year to the end of august showing an increase of

33% in visitor numbers from the corresponding period

last year. An interesting milestone was passed this year in

that over £1 million has been put into the local economy

by the Visitor Centre since it opened in 1995 this will

stand as a tribute to the directors and to the staff who

worked there over the years. Our winter project of refur-

bishing the kitchen paid dividends during the summer,

with us being able to cope easier and quicker with serving

the large number of visitors coming to the Cafe. With the

increase in visitors comes a new challenge as the cafe

seating and the shop floor area struggle to cope with the

numbers coming through the door. This will be addressed

in the near future by the board‘s ambitious expansion

plans for the Centre.

Thanks are due for all the support we received from our

local island customers who keep us going throughout the

long winter months when visitors are in short supply and

also for their patience and understanding when we were

doing our kitchen refurbishment. Many a lunch or coffee

break was accompanied, not by the ambiance of the usual

Celtic music but by the not so dulcet tones of the Dewalt

(band) saw and drill. Thanks also to Alex Murray and his

crew who despite all the difficulties of working round us

and the visitors, finished the work on time, and with a

minimum of fuss.

Victoria, Andrew and Daren escaped the photo shoot at

the Centre – which probably saved the camera – but we

got to use these images, minus the numbers that was writ-

ten underneath. (PHOTOS ON BACK PAGE)
