Heal GERD & Low Stomach Acid Through Food, Probiotics and Bitters
Sample meal and supplement plan to replenish gut health and restore stomach acid secretion
In general, but particularly when suffering
from GERD or low stomach acid, avoid
drinking excess amounts of water during
meals.
Water dilutes stomach acid, lessening the
effectiveness of protein digestion.
Pre-meal tip: To soothe discomfort associated with GERD symp-toms, try drinking 1 tbsp. of juice from a lemon or apple cider vinegar in 4-6 oz. of warm water.
Before (if you suspect symptoms will arise) or after (if symptoms do arise) a meal will help.
Lunch
Avocado & Apple Tuna Salad:
1/2 apple, diced
2 celery stalks, thinly chopped
2 tbsp. red onion, finely diced
1 can albacore, in water, drained (wild-caught)
1 avocado, mashed
1.5 tsp. dijon mustard
Salt & pepper to taste
Optional additions: 1 tsp mustard powder,
grapes, shredded carrots, or chopped green
onions
Combine and mix ingredients well.
Pre-meal tip: supplement with HCl tablets
Only take tablet with full meals containing protein.
After a few bites into a meal, take 1 tablet. Be sensitive to a warming sensation in your stomach. If you don’t feel warmth, at the next full meal, take 2 tablets. At the num-ber of tablets when you feel warmth, revert to the previous number of tablets before you felt warming and continue that dosage. Example: Felt warmth at 6 tablets, take 5 tab-lets and stay at this dosage until your stomach heals.
Eventually, when you’re creating sufficient stomach acid, titrate off the tablets.
Don’t supplement with HCl if you’re using NSAIDS, anti-inflammatory medications, or have ulcers!
Dinner
Baked Chicken
Salad with lots of leafy, green vegetables
Side of sauerkraut
Olive oil, balsamic vinaigrette, Dijon mustard
and salt for salad dressing.
Pre-meal tip: Before eating, take a dose of digestive bitters in tincture form. Follow dosage recommendations on the bottle.
Bitters increase the flow of digestive juices, including HCL, bile, pepsin, gastrin and pancreatic enzymes.
Breakfast
Veggie Omelet:
3 eggs, beat well
1 carrot, shredded
1 parsnip, shredded
2 green onions, diced
Spinach, handful, stem removed
Mushroom, handful, diced
Ghee, 1 tbsp.
1. In small skillet, with melted ghee, sauté carrot, parsnip, green onions, spinach and mushroom. When lightly cooked, transfer to separate plate.
2. Pour beat eggs into the same small skillet. When eggs firm up, add veggies to one side and fold in half. Slide the omelet on to a plate.
Serve with a side of bone broth.
Consider Carbohydrate Intake
A high carbohydrate diet can promote bacterial overgrowth, like H. pylori. H pylori can suppress stomach acid.
Protocols like FODMAPS, SCD, and GAPS focus on beneficial types of carbohydrate.
Consider trying one of these carbohydrate-sensitive protocols to eliminate bacterial overgrowth — a proposed root cause of GERD and low stomach acid.
Throughout the day, replenish beneficial
bacteria with probiotics, like sauerkraut.
