Tour Summary
SATURDAY 12TH NOVEMBER
Due to flight availability and other factors the whole group was to arrive a day earlier than per the
correct tour dates. 5 members of the group were collected from Terminal 2 in Rio International
Airport at 11.00 and by 11.20 we had the minibus loaded up and together with our driver Serginho
we quickly joined the rather large traffic jam and set off at a rather slow crawling pace out of Rio!
We headed north-east towards the mountains and within 40 minutes we had left the majority of traffic
and congestion behind and were heading up towards the Lodge. We did pick up a few species around
the Guanabara Bay area heading out of Rio, these were Magnificent Frigatebird, Brown Boobie, Great
Egret, Grey-headed Gull, Cocoi Heron and Southern Lapwing.
By 12.30 we were already
seeing the mountains that
we were to be birding in
and around for the next
week. It was quite
overcast so views were not
great, but certainly lots of
good forest around!
After the town of
Cachoeiras de Macacu we
started to climb up
through the mountains and
some spectacular scenery
until we reached 1080
metres in altitude where
we crossed over to the
other side of the
mountains and headed on
towards Nova Friburgo.
Just before Nova Friburgo we took a right hand turn and 20 minutes later we were arriving at the
beautiful Itororo Lodge where we were to be based for the next 8 nights heading out on daily
excursions to cover the whole elevational range of the surrounding mountains. We were warmly
greeted at the Lodge by Rainer and his sister Bettina who were to be our hosts for our stay.
Itororo lodge is beautifully located at 1200m in altitude, surrounded by forest it really is quite
stunning, this together with feeders full of birds and an excellent trail system makes it a really great
base for us. After spending 15 minutes or so watching the feeders and picking up species such as
Black Jacobin, Scale-throated Hermit, Violet-capped Woodnymph, Sombre Hummingbird, White-
throated Hummingbird, Brazilian Ruby and our first couple of tanager species, Ruby Crowned and
the stunning Brassy-breasted Tanager we headed in for a great lunch of beef stroganoff.
After lunch the group were free to unpack or bird around the lodge for the rest of the afternoon as the
tour was to start proper on Sunday morning. We did however pick up several species during the
afternoon including Burnished Buff Tanager, Ruby-crowned Tanager, Maroon-bellied Parakeet,
Scaled Woodcreeper, Pallid Spinetail, Crested Oropendola, Rufous-collared Sparrow, Dusky-legged
Guan, Picazuro Pigeon, Hooded Siskin, Rufous-headed Tanager, Azure-shouldered Tanager, Sayaca
Tanager, Yellow-legged Thrush, Bananaquit and Buff-fronted Foliage Gleaner.

Dinner was served at 19.00 and after completing the first checklist of the trip we retired for an early
night.
Our trusty driver Serginho set off back to Rio mid-afternoon to collect the last two members of the
group (John and Ricardo) who were due to arrive early evening into Rio airport. They arrived safe
and well at the Lodge at 01.30 having come across some localised flooding that closed the road for a
while. Exhausted and with a 06.00 start we retired to bed soon after!
SUNDAY 13TH NOVEMBER
After a night of heavy rain we
awoke to an overcast morning with
light rain. We had breakfast at
06.00 and headed off on the Blue
Trail, a circular route within the
lodge grounds. Although we had
light rain all morning we had a
really productive time with lots of
new birds. One of the first birds we
saw was a very cooperative Black-
billed Scythebill, it responded well
to playback and put on a great
show! Other highlights for the
morning included Fawn-breasted
Tanager, Rufous-headed Tanager,
Large-tailed Antshrike, Ochre-
rumped Antbird, Green-winged
Saltator, Rufous-capped Spinetail,
some lovely male Blue Manakins,
Buff-fronted Foliage Gleaner,
Pallid Spinetail, White-rimmed
Warbler, Planalto Woodcreeper,
Chestnut-crowned Becard, Bare-throated Bellbird, Plumbeous Pigeon (although rather distant!),
Black-throated and Surucua Trogon, Drab-breasted Bamboo Tyrant, Ochre-faced Tody Flycatcher,
Whiskered Myiobius, Yellow-legged Thrush, Black Goggled Tanager and amazing views of Bertonis
Antbird! Just as we arriving back at the lodge we came across a good mixed flock with several new
species including Variable Antshrike, Yellow-browed Woodpecker, Rufous-crowned Greenlet,
Streaked Xenops, Yellow-eared Woodpecker and Lesser Woodcreeper.
We arrived back at the lodge at 12.00 and went straight into lunch of fejoada, a mix of black beans
and pork sausage served with manioc flour, kale, rice and salad, washed down with a nice cold beer
for some, after a good mornings walk the lunch did indeed go down very well!
We had a break after lunch and set off again at 14.30 to bird along the White Trail, unfortunately the
rain had increased in volume but it was still worth giving it a go! Before leaving the lodge we used
playback and called in a nice male Green-backed Becard. We only picked up a few new birds during
the afternoon but some good ones, these included Orange-eyed Thornbird, Rufous Gnateater and
White-browed Foliage-gleaner. By 16.30 it was really beginning to rain and the bird activity had
dropped to zero so we headed back to the lodge for some welcome tea and coffee and watched the
feeders for the rest of the afternoon. Birds of note included Maroon-bellied Parakeet, Crested

Oropendola, Piratic Flycatcher, Azure-shouldered Tanager, Burnished buff Tanager and Ruby-
crowned Tanager. The hummingbird feeders were also very busy and were having regular visits from
Violet-capped Woodnymph, Scale-throated Hermit, Black Jacobin, Sombre Hummingbird, Brazilian
Ruby and White-throated Hummingbird.
We had planned to have dinner
early tonight at 18.00 to give us
enough time to go owling and look
for Nightjars but the rain just didnt
let up so we completed the days
checklist after dinner and called it
a day, with fingers crossed for
better weather tomorrow!
MONDAY 14TH NOVEMBER
Unfortunately, after a night of non-
stop rain we woke up to more rain!
We decided to head down to the
wetland area as its situated in the
lowlands and generally there is less
chance of rain there. We took a
drive of 1.5 hours stopping a
couple of times, once for a couple
of Whistling Herons and again for
a Burrowing Owl. It didnt stop
raining once during the journey and
although slightly lighter it was still
raining at the wetlands.
We got dressed up in our
waterproofs and headed off on the
trail around the wetlands and towards the lowland forest. Despite the rain we begun to pick up new
species including Common Gallinule, Yellow-chinned Spinetail, Smooth-billed Ani, Red-rumped
Cacique, Yellow-lored Tody Flycatcher, White-headed Marsh Tyrant, Masked Water Tyrant,
Glittering-throated Emerald, Brazilian Tanager and Lemon-chested Greenlet. It was still raining quite
heavily as we continued into the lowland forest. There was pretty much no bird activity at all, nothing
calling and although we tried for many species during the morning with playback etc there was very
little response apart from a Sooretama Slaty Anthsrike and some Flame-crested and Yellow-backed
Tanagers. Midday came and we made our way to the hide and sat down for lunch, here we picked up
better views of Greater Ani, Yellow-headed Caracara and a Black-crowned Night-Heron.
Come 12.30 the rain was relentless so we decided to head back to the minibus and drive back up the
mountains to see if the weather was any better, but it was worse! We arrived back at the lodge at
14.45 to some fresh coffee, tea and cake and spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing around the lodge.
TUESDAY 15TH NOVEMBER
Today we woke to the sight of more rain and decided to head back over the mountains to the Cedae
Trail to see if it was any drier there. We began birding with quite a bit of rain and then suddenly the
weather opened up with sunny patches and blue sky, we were all really quite relieved. until the
weather closed in again and poured with rain on and off for the rest of the morning.

Although the birding conditions were pretty hard we did get some good birds including Pale-browed
Treehunter, Plain Parakeet, Channel-billed Toucan, Star-throated Antwren, Streak-capped Antwren,
Black-cheeked Gnateater, Grey-hooded Flycatcher, Eared Pygmy Tyrant, Crested Becard, Olive-
green Tanager and Black-throated Grosbeak. We had seen some great birds, but really hard to bird in
these conditions!
We were back at the minibus by 12.00 and had lunch together with better views of both Green-headed
and Red-necked Tanagers. I telephoned the Lodge to see if the weather had improved, it had done so,
so we took the 40 minute drive back, had half an hour break then did the white trail. Its amazing how
much easier and successful the birding is with better weather! We had a good afternoons birding with
species responding much better to playback, such a relief! We had good views of a beautiful male
Pin-tailed Manakin, Suchs Antthrush, White-collared Foliage Gleaner, Orange-eyed Thornbird,
Ochre-faced Tody Flycatcher and then used playback on a Giant Antshrike, she responded well but
didnt want to show that well (!) so we recorded her own call, played it back. and before we knew
it she was showing really well giving great views and good photographic opportunities!
After a nice afternoons birding we returned to lodge for dinner at 18.00, we started to do the checklist
and stopped half way through to go out and look for some nightjars and owls.
We arrived at the Nightjar spot and first up we had a Short-tailed Nighthawk flying over us, shortly
afterwards the stunning Long-trained Nightjar appeared, fly over us quickly and landing further up
the hill behind, we walked up and managed to get great views and photos of this beautiful bird!
A Common Potoo started to call, we used some playback and it flew over us but unfortunately didnt
stop. We then played Rusty-barred Owl that was calling distantly, within 5 minutes a pair had flown
in close by and we managed to get good views of one of the birds, a great way to finish the day that
had started so wet and damp! I must say that we were all very relieved that the rain had finally stopped,
it had been the worst prolonged rain and quantity of rain for 5 years! Hard work but we managed to
get through it.
WEDNESDAY 16TH NOVEMBER
We awoke to thick low cloud but as we ate breakfast the cloud started to slowly clear and by departure
time at 06.30 we could see some of the distant mountains from the deck area. We decided to go to
Duas Barras and Sumidouro area today in search of the Three-toed Jacamar and various other target

species, it would also be a nice contrast to have some open country birding.
As we drove through the town of Nova Friburgo and towards Bom Jardim the sky became clearer
and the sun appeared, our fingers were crossed for a good days birding. An hour after leaving the
lodge we had our first scheduled stop on the road to Duas Barras where we picked up great views of
Streamer-tailed Tyrant, Rufous Hornero, White-bellied Seedeater, Blue-winged Macaws, White-eyed
Parakeets, Common Thornbird and Blackish Rail, the day was already off to a good start!
We all got back into the
minibus and drove on to
our next stop where we
picked up some great
endemics including Serra
Antwren, Yellow-lored
Tody Flycatcher and
Half-collared Sparrow,
then John said Andy,
take a look at this,
amazingly he had a
juvenile Crowned Eagle
perched up in the scope,
what a fantastic bird!
Shortly afterwards we
also picked up a very nice
Crescent-chested
Puffbird and Rufous-
thighed Kite.
We drove on for a further
10 minutes to another
area and picked up
Crested-black Tyrant,
Grassland Sparrow, Pale-
breasted Spinetail,
White-tailed Hawk,
White-rumped Swallow and White-rumped Monjita. We headed down into the town of Duas Barras
where we stopped for a coffee and cake and then drove onto a dirt road that leads to Sumidouro where
we would bird until lunch time. We had some great birds along this road including Firewood Gatherer,
Blue-winged Parrotlet, Chestnut-capped Blackbird, Fork-tailed Flycatcher, Yellow-browed Tyrant,
Gilt-egded Tanager, Lesser Woodcreeper, Hangnest Tody Tyrant, Green-backed Becard, Toco
Toucan, Guira Cuckoo, Slaty-breasted Wood Rail, Tawny-headed Swallow and White-eared
Puffbird.
After lunch we decided to drive straight to the Three-toed Jacamar spot as there were some rather
dark clouds building up. We arrived at the track where the Jacamars reside and took a short walk
before getting to the correct spot. There was no sign of the Jacamars so we used some playback and
within a couple of minutes we had 2 Three-toed Jacamars sitting right above us and giving some good
views. We also picked up Yellow Tyrannulet, Hooded Tanager, White-winged Becard and Chestnut-
vented Conebill at the same spot.

We all boarded the minibus again and started heading back towards Nova Friburgo with one more
scheduled stop where we had some good views of Black-necked Aracari. After a great days birding
we departed back to the lodge and arrived at 17.15, time enough for showers before meeting up again
for dinner! We had a well earned dinner and competed the days checklist, we had seen an impressive
113 species during the day!
THURSDAY 17TH NOVEMBER
So another day dawned and
unfortunately it was once again very
overcast, whilst we were having
breakfast it started to rain again. We
were to spend the day birding the lodge
grounds and by 06.45 the rain had eased
so we set off on the circular Blue Trail
for the morning. Suddenly the clouds
broke and the sun came out, birds
started to call and we were ready for
some action! First up we managed to
call in a Grey-capped Tyrannulet, this
was followed by a White-winged
Becard and Chestnut-crowned Becard.
We set off into the forest and I started
playing for Dusky-tailed Antbird at a
known territory. There was no response
but we did hear a distant Brazilian
Antthrush calling so we headed towards
the area and started using playback. The
bird responded well but was hiding
away behind a little ridge and only a
couple of us got to saw it as it passed by
a little open area quickly. We spent
some further time trying to see it but it
clearly was not going to play! During this time the Dusky-tailed Antbird had started to call so we
went back to the spot and managed to get great views of a male, fantastic!
We continued on our way and picked up another White-rimmed Warbler, various Buff-fronted
Foliage Gleaners and a Rough-legged Tyrannulet, then it started to rain again! This bad weather was
now becoming really quite tiresome! By 09.20 the rain was torrential so we decided to head back to
the lodge and wait for the weather to improve. Amazingly in the 15 minutes it took us to get back to
the lodge the clouds parted and we had complete sunshine what was going on?! We were not
complaining however and 20 minutes later we were back on another trail heading towards to Orchid
garden. We had decided to go for some particularly difficult but important species for the remainder
of the morning. First up was Mouse-coloured Tapaculo, this responded really quite well and John
picked it up pretty quickly and everyone had views. We also tried for Spotted Bamboo Wren in the
same area, and after considerable effort we all managed to get some kind of a view of this very elusive
bird! We tried in several areas for Sharp-tailed Streamcreeper and Rufous-breasted Leaftosser but
unfortunately there was no response. Next up was to use playback for Rufous-capped Motmot, within
minutes it responded and eventually showed itself well. We set off back to the Lodge in time for

lunch at 12.30 picking up a couple of Grey-rumped Swifts on the way and the sun was still
shining!
After lunch we set off again on the Blue Trail as there were certain target species remaining there.
We went with specific targets and covered quite a bit of ground quickly. Things were starting to go
well as we had great views of White-throated Woodcreeper, followed by a nice male Spot-billed
Toucanet. This was then followed by Greenish Schiffornis and topped by a rather responsive
Brazilian Antthrush that came right out onto the path in response to playback. We also had nice views
of a pair of Bertonis Antbirds and White-shouldered Fire-eye. As we came out of the forest we came
across a tree with several different birds in, two of which were new trip birds, a rather nice Shear-
tailed Grey Tyrant and a Swainsons Flycatcher.
We arrived back at the lodge at 17.45 and
dinner was served at 18.30 followed by
the daily checklist. Thankfully we had
almost had a full day of sunshine, and
what a difference to the birding this
made, things were finally responding
well to playback and showing
themselves!
FRIDAY 18TH NOVEMBER
We departed from the lodge at 06.30 to
spend the morning birding the Macae de
Cima Trail and then onto the Theodoro
Trail in the afternoon. After a 35 minute
drive we arrived at the beginning of the
trail and started birding. It was quite cold
with light rain and the birds were not
being very responsive. We tried for
Tufted Antshrike in a very reliable spot,
but without any luck. We walked on a
little further and there was not much
going on! We arrived at the Crested
Oropendola nesting site and there was
quite a bit of action with birds coming in
and out of the nest tree, we also picked
up Giant Cowbird here and a couple of
White-barred Piculets responded well to
playback and gave great views and excellent photographic opportunities. We got back in the minibus
and moved on, our next stop didnt produce much apart from a Bare-throated Bellbird that gave good
scope views and a Green-barred Woodpecker that after a while decided to come in to some playback.
We drove on a little further to the Green-crowned Plovercrest lek site, we rigged the speaker up in a
tree close by and played some Green-crowned Plovercrest calls, almost instantly 2 males came in and
perched below the speaker giving great views! Over the course of the next 20 minutes various males
came in and gave great photographic opportunities. We also picked up good views of Rufous-breasted
Leaftosser at the same spot. Calling distantly was a Black-and-gold Cotinga, after a good scan we
picked it up on the top of the ridge and had distant but good scope views of this endemic.

We decided to drive directly to our last stop and work our way back just in case it should rain heavily
as we didnt want to miss certain target birds. We did however have one stop en route for some nesting
Swallow-tailed Cotingas that I had seen at a spot a few weeks back, thankfully they were still there
and what great views we had of this beautiful bird! We also had good views of Spixs Spinetail at the
same spot. After approximately 20 minutes we arrived at our final point and walked a little further
down the road. We had a couple of target birds here, firstly I played Slaty-Bristlefront followed by
White-bibbed Antbird. A distant Spot-billed Toucanet was also calling so we tried this also. Then
suddenly the Antbird responded and we used playback to call it in, and what a show it put on! We
then called in the Spot-billed Toucanets and a male showed well. Then out of the blue the Bristlefront
called close by. I put the speaker on a log at the edge of the forest and used playback, the bird hopped
straight up on the log and showed incredibly well, even kicked the speaker off the log in all its
excitement, what a fantastic spot with 3 great birds!
We walked back to the
minibus picking up a White-
necked Thrush on the way
and then started to head to
our next spot to try for
White-bearded Antshrike,
which unfortunately did not
respond. It started to rain
heavily so we made a dash
for it back out onto the main
road before the dirt track we
were on turned into an
impassable mess! We drove
for a further 10 minutes to
the start of the Theodoro
Trail, but unfortunately it
was now pouring with rain.
We waited half an hour to
see if it would clear up but it
didnt. I called the lodge and
although it was cloudy there
was still no rain, so we
headed back there, had a quick coffee and then some of us headed out to try and see White-breasted
Tapaculo. It responded to playback but didnt appear, so we went to another area where they hold
territory and tried there. Although the bird responded, once again it didnt show. Thankfully there
was a Tufted Antshrike calling distantly so we thought we should at least try! It came down the slope
some distance pretty quickly, and within 15 minutes after a lot of work we managed to pick up
satisfactory views of both the male and female, very elusive but beautiful birds nonetheless! It was
now 17.30 so we started to walk back slowly to the lodge. The plan was to have dinner at 18.00 and
then go owling, but due to strong winds we decided to postpone until tomorrow night. We had dinner
and completed the checklist. What a great days birding!
SATURDAY 19TH NOVEMBER
We woke to a nice clear day. We departed the lodge at 06.30 and headed towards Pico da Caledonia.
It had been very windy all night and upon arriving at the base of Caladonia I saw the truck that takes
the security guards up to their base, I stopped and spoke to them and the road was completely blocked

with fallen trees and downed power cables, this was such bad luck, this meant that it wouldnt be
possible to go up and bird the high altitude area, such a shame. At this point it also started to rain,
what to do now? We headed back towards the Theodoro Trail, and only encountered even more
rainarrrgghh! We dropped down the mountain road to the Cedae Trail and it was still raining
lightly, so we decided to continue on down to the wetlands as we were missing several key species
there. Shortly before arriving I spotted a white raptor up high so we got out of the minibus and got
great views of a couple of White-necked Hawks. We arrived by 08.30 and started the trail, we
instantly picked up several new species as when we were here earlier in the week it had poured with
rain. New species for this morning included Silvery-flanked Antwren, Unicolored Antwren,
Chestnut-backed Antshrike, Blond-crested Woodpecker, Long-billed Wren, Ochre-bellied
Flycatcher, Reddish Hermit, Green Kingfisher, Common Waxbill and Orange-bellied Euphonia.
We had our packed lunch and
started heading back to the
minibus with our fingers
crossed that it would be clear
enough to stop at the Cedae
Trail on the way back up the
mountain. We arrived at the
Cedae Trail by 14.30 and
although a little cold and
overcast, at least it wasnt
raining! It was fairly quiet on
the trail and we picked up
good views again of both
Green-headed and Red-
necked Tanagers, Plain
Parakeets, Golden-crowned
Warbler and Sepia-capped
Flycatcher. We also managed
to pick up a couple of new
species which were Ochre-
breasted Foliage Gleaner and
Red-crowned Ant Tanager.
By 17.15 we were on our way back to the lodge, as we drove through Mury, John shouted that he had
a raptor, so we pulled over, hopped out the minibus and had nice views of 6 Swallow-tailed Kites,
our bonus bird of the day!
We arrived back at the lodge at 17.50 and dinner was served at 18.00 so that we could go owling. At
19.15 we left the lodge and headed towards the White Trail, unfortunately it was pretty cold (around
8 degrees centigrade) and apart from a distant Short-tailed Nighthawk calling there was nothing else
going on, so we returned to the Lodge. A tough but pretty rewarding day with 14 new species being
recorded.
SUNDAY 20TH NOVEMBER
After an unseasonably cold night we woke to a beautiful day of clear blue sky and sunshine. We were
going to go out for a few remaining targets within the lodge grounds prior to the groups departure at
11.00. We decided in was mission White-breasted Tapaculo, a bird we had heard and tried for on
many occasions within the lodge grounds. We headed towards one of the Tapaculo territories and it

was already calling. I recorded the bird and started to use playback, but the Tapaculo stayed in exactly
the same position and continued to call! After 20 minutes we gave up and went to another spot. Just
before we arrived I used some playback to fish for a Sharp-tailed Streamcreeper, one instantly
responded and we picked it up on the side of a bank within a couple of minutes, good views of a great
bird! We then used some playback for the Tapaculo, one came in very fast but didnt stop flying
around in the undergrowth and then vanished, only giving us very poor views. We headed back down
towards the lodge and as we walked past the other Tapaculo spot it was still calling, so we decided
to give it one last go! As we neared the spot I saw a Serra do Mar Tyrant-Mannakin, a bird we had
tried for quite a few times during the week, what a bonus! We tried desperately to find the Tapaculo
but with no success. Then the most bizarre thing happened the Tapaculo came literally running
down a stick towards us and stopped 3 feet in front of us, we couldnt believe our eyes, so much effort
to get this bird and we had finally seen it! Very happy with ourselves (and in shock!) we took the
short walk back to the Lodge with time to pack prior to departure at 11.00.
It had been a tough weeks birding with the various weather constraints, but we had seen some great
birds and actually done rather well, but such a pity not being able to get access to the High Altitude
area due to the tree falls.
During the week we had seen a combined group total of 273 species, of which an amazing 83 were
Atlantic forest endemics with a further 13 species heard only. The record for a Rockjumper trip to
this area is 85 Atlantic forest endemics, so we had done remarkably well!
Many thanks to Rainer and Bettina at the Lodge for looking after us so well during the week and
providing lots of lovely food for us, also thanks to Stefan Johansson for the use of his great photos
for the trip report and to Serginho for driving us so safely during the week!
