STOP PRESS !!!

It’s a busy time for the Residents Network as weput together the Braunstone Awards and plan ourAGM. Both of these events are to take place in

March. We are helping with the Braunstone Carnival 2014,again we will be donating £1,000 towards the runningcosts and laying on a bus service, “the BraunstoneHopper”, to ferry local people to and from the event. On top of all of this, we are in the process of going livewith the Braunstone Residents’ Network Website. Sokeep your eyes peeled for flyers, Resnet facebook, theAlert and b-inspired website for up-dates and moreinformation about up and coming developments andevents. We have been thinking about what else we would liketo do this coming year. Some great suggestions cameout of the last residents meeting and here are some ofthem…Take people on trips around the country, putting on aBraunstone’s got talent show, a tea party or dance, abeach event and an event in the walled garden. If youhave any other ideas please let us know!Funding to pay for these ideas partly comes from theweekly garage sale at Wellinger Way, this has beengoing from strength to strength and has raised over£6000 to date. All of this money will be used to put onthe events and to buy things needed to make eventshappen! Sometimes the money gets used to help oth-er community groups too, such as helping towards thecost of new football equipment for Studs Footballteam and to help the new art group set up at Sum-mer’s Café. We also use Resnet funds to support theCVQ volunteers in hosting community events, such as‘Braunstone on the Beach’ and the Easter Fun day heldat Summer’s Cafe.We can be found at most of the special days that takeplace here in Braunstone. If you have a morning tospare or an opinion to share, or if you want to help uswith our website and organising events then pleasecall us on 0116 2232256 to find out more!

COME ALONG AND TRY SOMETHING NEW!

We were all sadto hear of thedeath of Ruby

Grant in December. Manypeople mourned herpassing as she was a wellknown and much lovedwoman. Ruby supportedher community anddedicated her time byvolunteering at theBraunstone Foodshare. Our condolences to Ruby’sfamily on this sadoccasion. One of her

closest friends Ruth Brookfield pays tribute toRuby.Chalk and Cheese, easiest way to describe meand Ruby Two Shoes. I was loud, out going, opinionated and Ruby was quiet (until she'd hada drink), loving, and very loyal. She did anythingfor anyone.Ruby could be shy at times but she loved to mixand make new friends. Ruby was fantastic atsewing, and could make anything where as Icouldn't even stitch a patch! I'll never everforget her! 50 years of friendship and I’ve lovedit all, every step of the way, the good and thebad. Today I would say goodbye, but I prefer tosay until we meet again  xxxxx

Earlier this year, the Alert office received a lovely email from Sharon Mason, the Scheme Manager atSandyhurst sheltered accommodation on Hockley Farm Road, praising the b-connected Befriending scheme.Sharon said, “Over the last year we have had several of our service users use the Befriending scheme and

this has become an invaluable service for them, it offers support, friendship and a listening ear to those who areless able to get out into the community. It just shows you what being a volunteer can mean on both sides for the

people involved and one of the many services that are available withinBraunstone”.The Alert Team decided to pop into Sandyhurst and to speak Sharon andto one of the Befrienders, George, and his Befriendee, Ron, about theirfriendship and the Befriending scheme.George said, “As I know that there are some older people who just needsomeone for a chat I decided to volunteer as a befriender. I was matchedwith Ron, from Sandyhurst, and we just clicked from the beginning”.Ron said, “We started to natter away and before you knew it a whole hourhad passed. I would recommend the service as you can’t go wrong and you

could gain a friend, just like I have”.Sharon added, “The Befriending scheme offers people who are restricted with their mobility a form ofcommunication, support and friendship. It has made an invaluable service and has given a new lease of life forpeople who are lonely and isolated”.The Befriending scheme is for over 60’s who find it more difficult to get out. Volunteers go through securitychecks (DBS) and attend training to become a Befriender. Coming soon to Braunstone…

Page 11: Braunstone Alert March/April 2014

I would like to start off by introducing myself, I’m Sergeant Siobhan Gorman and I have recently takenover the role of Neighbourhood Sergeant for Braunstone and Rowley Fields. I joined Leicestershire

Police in 2002, as a uniformed response officer based at Charles Street, and since then I’ve worked in various areas of the city including the St Matthewsestate, Beaumont Leys and Hinckley Road. I have been an Acting Sergeant for thepast three and half years and have recently been promoted to the rank of Sergeantprior to joining the safer neighbourhood team here in Braunstone. I look forward togetting to know the local community and I would urge people to contact the team ifthey have any concerns in the area.Recently we have received an increase of reports where residents are havingunexpected callers knocking on their doors. On opening the doors, services includinggardening and maintenance checks on houses have been offered. I would like to

remind people of the following crime prevention advice if you are ever faced with this situation:● Bogus callers may be smartly dressed and claim to be from the council, the police, health organisations

or gas, water or electricity companies.● An unexpected visitor offering work such as gardening and property maintenance could be a bogus

caller. Do not let them into your home unless you have specifically called for their services first.● Beware of callers who attempt to distract you by claiming they have seen something untoward in

another room or outside, which may encourage you to leave the room.● Fit a door chain or use a spy hole to allow you to check who the caller is before opening the door. If they

can’t produce official ID then do not let them in. You can even ring the company they say they are fromto confirm their identity.

● A genuine caller won’t mind you closing the door while you check their ID and most will be happy tomake an appointment and return at a later date or time.

For further advice visit our website www.leics.police.uk, call us on 101 or visit your local police station wherean officer will be more than happy to help you.We have also had reports of anti-social behaviour (ASB) in the area. Incidents include criminal damage to streetfurniture and young people causing unnecessary loud noise in the street. In an attempt to reduce ASB in thearea, we will be conducting pro-active patrols and engaging with those who are committing the offences. If youwitness anyone committing an act of crime please contact us, this will enable us to bring those causing harmto communities to justice. On a final note I would like to say thanks for the warm welcome that I have already received from people, andI look forward to meeting and maintaining strong links with more of the community.

Sergeant Siobhan Gorman

Dear Alert,I work for the LCC’s CommunityInclusion Team. 16 months ago webegan a pilot project to look forcommunity based opportunities foradults with a learning and/orphysical disability. I was asked tolook for such opportunities in two areas - one of whichwas Braunstone.I contacted b-connected at the Neighbourhood Supportbase who gave us lots of ideas, some of which we tookup. Many of you will be aware of Peter joining in withthe ‘Lets Walk Braunstone’ group, volunteering at theBraunstone Foodshare & helping out at Summer’s Cafe.I have been supporting Peter during this time but soonI will be moving on to work with other people; before Ileave I wanted to pass on my many thanks to all whohave made us very welcome. I would like to name youall individually but it would take up most of this issue! Therefore I will mention you collectively - the Lets WalkBraunstone Group, everyone at Summer’s Cafe & theBraunstone Foodshare - at St Peters, the United ReformChurch & the BRITE Centre. The folk of Braunstonehave walked up their garden paths, leaned out theirwindows & stopped us in the street to have a chat. Wehave made some great friends. Peter has appreciatedthis so much, and I have no doubt things will continueto be a success for him in his community. I hope to seeyou all from time to time because I’m sure other folkswill wish to experience Brilliant Braunstone!
