St. Mary Magdalene Church

The church of St Mary Magdalene was largely endowed by Mrs Charlotte Larpent of Holmwood House and her mother, Mary Ann

Arnold. Designed by John Burges Watson, it was built in 1838. The original church was a small, simple and pleasingly rustic church,

seating only 275. It had neither spire nor tower. A modest vicarage by the same architect was built for the first vicar, the Reverend

John Sutton Utterton, the following year. The vicarage was much enlarged during the time of the next incumbent, Edmund Dawe

Wickham, an independently wealthy man with a large family.

The parish of Holmwood was created from parts of Dorking and Capel parishes. Part of the parish was removed when Coldharbour

parish was created in 1848, with a swathe of land to the north being added in recompense. In 1874, when North Holmwood parish

was established, that area was removed. In 1842 a chancel was added, designed by James William Wild. This added 150 to the seating

capacity. So much has the church been extended, with the addition of a tower, that it is now scarcely recognisable as the simple church

of 1838.

The church contains memorials or commemorative windows to John Gough Nichols, the antiquarian publisher of The Gentleman’s

Magazine, and to Admiral Sir Leopold Heath. George Rennie, the civil engineer and bridge builder, is buried in the churchyard, as is

Enfield Citadel Band

For more than 100 years, Enfield Citadel Band has proclaimed the gospel message in the suburbs of North London. Founded in

Tottenham, in 1892, the band gained early recognition as one of The Salvation Army’s leading musical groups and, in the years that

followed, a rich history and tradition was established. In 1972, with the merging of two Salvation Army corps, the band moved to

Enfield, on the outskirts of North London, and assumed its present title. There, as before, the band’s service has continued within the

corps, in open-air activities and in visits to hospitals etc. in the same way as Salvation Army bands throughout the world.

In addition to service within it’s own locality Enfield Citadel Band travels extensively to present its ministry in music making. It has

performed in most of the major concert venues in the British Isles and has shared programmes with some of the leading contesting

bands including Black Dyke, Fairey’s and Foden’s. Visits to Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Australia,

New Zealand, Canada and the USA have also been undertaken. Enfield Citadel Band is also regularly involved in broadcasting and

recording activities: a number of recent recordings on compact disc are available tonight.

A wide range of professions are represented by its members from accountants to architects and civil servants to salesmen, but all are

united by the desire to use their talents in the Lord’s service.

ENFIELD CONNECTIONS

Bandmaster Jonathan Corry

Jonathan Corry was commissioned Bandmaster of Enfield Citadel Band in January 2009, a role which

he is privileged to undertake in Salvation Army musical ministry. Originally taught by his father and

a member of the Young People’s Band at Belfast Temple SA, Jonathan soon progressed to Principal

Trumpet of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and under the tutelage of Paul Young,

obtaining a place to study for a BMus(hons) at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM).

At the RNCM he regularly played Bb and Eb cornet with bands such as Black Dyke before studying

for a Masters (MMus) in conducting with James Gourlay, Mark Elder and Clark Rundell. During this

period he built a portfolio of conducting experience with bands, including weekend visits to various SA bands, Cwmaman Institute,

Tullis Russell Mills, Besses O’th Barn, Fairey, Strabane Concert Brass and Brighouse and Rastrick. He was a semi-finalist at the

European Conductor’s competition held in Groningen, Holland, and in 2006 was Assistant Conductor of the European Youth Brass

Band. Recently, Jonathan has become an associate member of the Association of Brass Band Adjudicators.

He has performed and recorded with the Ulster Orchestra on a number of occasions and been concerto soloist playing the Haydn and

Hummel concertos with the Ulster Orchestra and Camerata Ireland respectively.

As well his commitments at Pangbourne College, where Jonathan is Head of Brass, Bandmaster and Assistant Boarding Master; he

also works for Havering Music Service and Brent Music Service. His work also includes recitals, masterclasses, producing and editing

CD recordings, BBC recordings and broadcasts and fulfilling his role as brass professor and rehearsal conductor for the National Youth
