BRAMLEY COMMUNITY CENTRE

The people of Bramley were devastated when, on the evening of 30th June 1957, the Church Institute, as it was then called, burnt down in a huge fire. A report in the Yorkshire Evening Post the following day said flames leaped 50ft in the air from the 25 year old wooden structure, that the outside walls of houses nearby were scorched and that plaster came away from the walls inside people’s homes, so intense was the heat. The Vicar of St Peter’s Church, the Rev Norman McDermaid, was the driving force in getting the Centre rebuilt in less than a year. The Bramley community, full of sympathy for the loss of the Institute, quickly raised the £4,700 needed to rebuild it. A lot of the rebuilding work was carried out by local tradesmen for free. The Centre has since been extended to the building you now see. Bramley History Society has been using the Centre since our first meeting in 1982. We are very happy to be able to continue to use it.

Life after death: coping with bereavement and grief

The death of a loved one is something we will all face in our lives, and can be absolutely crushing. It can happen at any age, but as we grow older we become more likely to go through the loss of a spouse or partner, close family members and lifetime friends. ····························································································

While grief is different for everyone, many people struggle with intense, frightening emotions, which may include shock, guilt, anger and depression, and strong physical symptoms such as heart palpitations, sleep problems and a need to cry. These are all ‘normal’ in this situation. ···························································································· ··

The mixture of emotions and a huge life change can leave someone very isolated, socially and emotionally. It can be very important to stay as ‘connected’ as you can with someone in grief, though they may find it hard to ask for help and it may take a long time to recover. ····························································································

There can be a large number of tasks to go through after

someone has died, from washing clothes, doing shopping

and cooking food, to arranging a funeral and dealing with a

will. Some people find it helpful to do things, but for many

these things can be emotionally draining, especially if done

alone. Any practical help offered may be invaluable.

····························································································

Practical and emotional help and support is available. Please see the box to the right for details.

····························································································

If you have been bereaved BEA can help you get out of the house, find things to do and meet new people. Friendship & Social Group, which meets on the first Wednesday of the month, includes many people who have been bereaved. Finding a group or activity that suits you, whatever that is, may be of enormous help.

Phone BEA if you have been bereaved and would like information about services available, or if you would like

our support to get involved in BEA activities.

Meet the Milkman Graham Dunn

Graham Dunn has been a milkman since 1985 when he started in Bradford, and has been working in Bramley and Pudsey since 1991. At that time there were 13 milkmen in this area, but now he is one of just three! Graham enjoys meeting and getting to know people he delivers to, and has seen new generations growing up in the same houses and neighbourhoods. Of his 400 customers about 65% are older people. He is always happy to chat with people, especially those who may not get out much and has often done odd jobs, such as changing light bulbs, for older customers. He knows how important milk delivery is, especially for people who can’t get out, or struggle to carry heavy things. Graham also looks out for people, and has sometimes phoned the police when he has been worried about someone who has not picked up their pint from the doorstep. The worst thing about the job is that, working from around midnight to 6.15 am, he is sometimes out and about at the same time as burglars, and was once chased by a man wielding a knife! Graham grew up in Thornbury and now lives about 700 yards from his childhood home! When he’s not working he likes playing golf, at Fulneck, where he also helps out and does odd jobs, including building bunkers.

If you would like to get milk delivered to your door, even if it’s just a pint a week, please phone Graham on 0794 654 9670.

We’re BEA Volunteers Susan Gallifant and Brenda Evans Susan Gallifant and Brenda Evans have become great friends since they met at a Dementia training session when they both started volunteering for BEA in October 2017. They enjoyed the small group format of the training they received in Wheelchair Handling, 1st Aid and Dementia Awareness and are now very active volunteers – as befrienders, shop workers, and happy to be asked to do other one-off jobs. Susan and Brenda are both very clear that they get a lot out of volunteering themselves, as well as having made a new friend. They both find befriending really rewarding, helping lovely people who don’t get out of their houses, and love meeting all the friendly people who come into the shop. Susan said “You meet such a wide range of people from different backgrounds to yourselves.” Susan and Brenda also take advantage of BEA activities themselves, going to Tai chi together and on a trip, and intend to start Zumba soon. Outside of BEA they meet up, sometimes go shopping together and “always have something to talk about”. If you’re not sure about BEAing a volunteer, as Brenda says: “Just do it! You can choose what you want to do. Give it a try.”

See www.bramleyea.org.uk/join-bea/im-a-bea-volunteer/ for more volunteers’ stories BEA is seeking new volunteers in a variety of roles, especially driving, befriending and helping sort goods and clothes in the shop. Get in touch if you are interested.

No to doorstep traders Not all doorstep traders are fraudsters, but it is a common way of trying to scam people, including many older people. Be aware of that possibility if someone calls at your door, offering to do work. Here are some tips: Don’t make immediate decisions, which someone may be trying to get you to do. Take time to talk to someone you trust first. If the trader is genuine, they will give you proper contact details and will wait for you to get back. Ask to see an identity card, then check the company is genuine. Beware of special offers, and of warnings that your house is unsafe or unsecure. If you feel at all pressured ask the person to leave.
