Principal’s News Firstly, I must thank all parents who have returned their surveys so far. The response rate has been terrific with over 52 surveys being received. Surveys can still be returned, if yours has been misplaced, extras can be collected from the office. Many students are enjoying their new pens and putting them to good use. Today, I met with the Federal Minister for Immigration to discuss the provisions for supporting students from an „English as A Second language‟ background at Braeside. The meeting was informative and something I will share with the School Council at our next meeting on the 1st of August. The School Council meeting will also review the School Behaviour Management Policy and I encourage you to provide feedback to your School Council representatives on this matter. Independent Public School Process
Members of the School Council and the School have decided to withdraw from the Independent Public School nomination process. Upon reflection, we have realised that we have significant work to do within the School Community establishing a visible School Council whose role is understood.

NAIDOC Assembly
Friday 1st July 2016 – 1.40 pm
In celebration of NAIDOC week, our students have been developing visual artworks based around the theme “Sing a Story,” using traditional Aboriginal
style and symbols. At the assembly, each class will be presenting their artwork which tells a story about their class and what they have been learning about.
Aussie of the Month awards will be presented at the assembly for each class. Parents and community members are invited to afternoon tea after the
assembly.

Principal’s News continued… As a group we will be pursuing these efforts next year and are planning to nominate in the next round. For the next round, we will have community engagement and understanding about the role of the School Council and how the School Council works alongside the school.
Reports and Interviews
With Winter Carnival being held on Friday, all reports will be distributed on
Thursday 23rd June. This will ensure that all students receive reports on the
same day and there are no issues with children being at other locations. Parents
who have not scheduled a parent interview, can ring the office and make a
booking. Times for parent interviews will be sent to parents today.
Three Year old Kindergarten
Next term, Braeside will be offering a three year old Kindergarten program. This
program will provide a transition to the school kindergarten program. It will run
on Fridays from 9.15-10.45 . Mrs Edwards has accepted the role of coordinating
this program. Each week, there will be outside agencies available to talk to
parents and provide information. Enrolment forms are available from the front
office.
Kindergarten 2017
Braeside Primary School is now accepting enrolments into our Kindergarten
program for 2017. Please come up to the Office and pick up an enrolment pack.
We will also have our Kindergarten Handbook for 2016 and our Parent
Handbook available to provide any information that may be needed. Enrolments
are needed prior to the 1st August to assist us with staffing for next year. This
year we received 28 enrolments and ran 2 Kindergarten groups, we hope to offer
a similar program for 2017.
Nights of Reading
Below is a table of the percentage of students achieving nights of reading
awards. Although this does not seem significant, it is important to note that we
have not yet had 100 days of school this year. This shows that some of our
students are reading on weekends! On reading student reports, it is clear that
the children who are actively participating in this program are making significant
gains in either their Lexile or reading levels. The children are setting themselves
goals to read a certain number of nights and the expression of success when
they come to the Office to let Mrs Woods know, is another positive aspect of the
program. Our school goal is to have every student read for 50 nights before the
end of the year, a tough target but an achievable one, especially with parent
support.

Community
I am currently the Year 5 teacher and have been at BPS for close to a year. One of my favourite things to do is travel and learn about different cultures. I have been lucky enough to teach in Malaysia, study in America and travel through Europe. While I have family in Williams and Albany, I am originally from Perth and living in the country is a new experience for me. I am so grateful to all the Braeside staff for showing me the ropes and helping me to feel at home in Katanning! I'm having a great time with my wonderful Year 5's and feel very fortunate to be doing what I love every day!
Hello my name is Barb Woods. I am one of the School Officers at Braeside Primary School. Both my children attended Braeside Primary School when little before going up to Katanning Senior High School. I did parent help when the kids were small, and then did some relief EA work for a few years. I later won a Special Needs EA position and worked at Braeside for a few years before becoming and winning the position as Registrar. I have now decided to be the School Officer instead of the School Registrar. I enjoy having Fridays off and looking after my husband Darren and our assortment of pets. I love gardening, cooking, reading and assorted craft as well as visiting my children who now both live in Perth.

ideas, support the sub-committees with the big events (eg. Rotary Dinner & the Katanning Show Strawberries n
Cream), liaise with the teachers & community to gather Donation Requests & help decide „what do we need to earn to
pay for the things we want to buy‟!

General News:
Confused about what a P&C does? Our main job is to provide a link between parents & school with a goal of making
our school brilliant. We raise money, run a uniform shop & organise an external canteen service. The most important
part of a P&C association is you! Got an idea for fundraising? Would you like to suggest a change to the canteen
menu? Reckon you know how we can improve then please let a committee member know!!
Please be very welcome to come to the next P&C meeting on the 10th
August at 7 pm at school.
