On behalf of Bradford Theatres, I am thrilled to present the 145th International Orchestral Concert Season. We are extremely proud to host this historic season at St George’s Concert Hall during 2010/11 which carries on the tradition of bringing the world’s top orchestras and soloists to Bradford.

This season focuses upon the music of Austria and specifically its capital city, Vienna. It includes the popular Hallé New Year Viennese Concert, The Mozarteum Orchestra of Salzburg presenting a programme of three outstanding Viennese masterpieces and a first time visit from the Vienna Tonkünstler Orchestra.

We welcome back our resident orchestra the Hallé presenting three concerts, two of which are conductedby the Hallé’s Music Director, Sir Mark Elder; and the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of Moscow Radio, one of Russia’s greatest orchestras.

Our Chamber season at Bradford Cathedral is now entering its 23rd International Season and this year it will be opened by a very special concert, led by one of Britain’s finest musicians, Julian Lloyd Webber.

This is a season of extraordinary musical riches, which is sure to appeal to all, and I hope you will continueto support Bradford Theatres and our International Orchestral and Chamber seasons.

With best regards

The season opens with an immediately attractive concert, performed by the Hallé under its distinguished Music Director, Sir Mark Elder. Bizet’s incidental music to the play The Girl From Arles conjures up all the heat and atmosphere of the South of France. Richard Strauss’s late Duet Concertino for Clarinet and Bassoon continues the autumnal richness found in his Oboe Concerto and immortal Four Last Songs, while giving the two soloists an opportunity to demonstrate their individual virtuosity. Antonin Dvorák was greatly admired by no less a composer than Brahms, and his Seventh Symphony, which received its first European performance in Vienna after its London premiere, is generally considered to be the finest of his glorious nine symphonies.

The Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of Moscow Radio is one of Russia’s greatest orchestras, with a long line of distinguished principal conductors including Gennady Rozhdestvensky. In this concert, the orchestra is led by its exciting principal guest conductor, the Norwegian maestro Terje Mikkelsen, who has a flourishing career in Russia, Europe and the Far East. Maestro Mikkelsen is well qualified to direct two masterpieces of Scandinavian music, Grieg’s evocative Suite of music for Ibsen’s masterpiece Peer Gynt, and Sibelius’s fiery Violin Concerto, in which the soloist is the brilliant young Russian Alena Baeva, who has already achieved great success at major violin competitions in Moscow and Warsaw. Rachmaninov’s richly romantic Second Symphony completes this exceptional programme, which will display the virtuosity of this great orchestra to the full.

The Mozarteum Orchestra of Salzburg, under its English-born Music Director Ivor Bolton, presents a programme of three outstanding Viennese masterpieces. Schubert’s brooding Unfinished Symphony has held audiences spellbound ever since its first performance in Vienna’s mighty Hofburg, nearly forty years after the composer’s untimely death. By contrast Beethoven’s Second Piano Concerto, inspired by the concertos of Mozart, is one of his sunniest and most ebullient works. The soloist is Freddy Kempf, now recognised as one of this country’s finest pianists with a career that takes him around the world. Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony, his last and greatest, reaches a level of brilliance and exultation never again equalled, even by this greatest of musical geniuses.

Richard Strauss’s fabulously successful opera Der Rosenkavalier is set in the glittering world of eighteen century Vienna, while its musical language draws upon the Viennese waltzes of the nineteenth century, which appear prominently in the tuneful Suite drawn from the opera. So congenial did Brahms find the atmosphere of musical Vienna that he settled there permanently. His mighty Fourth Symphony is generally considered to be one of his finest works, combining drama and passion with a resigned serenity that has gripped audiences since its first performance. Schumann’s Cello Concerto is both daring and adventurous, brimming with the lyricism that made him a favourite throughout Europe and which inspired Brahms, his great disciple.

Nothing could be more Viennese than the traditional New Year’s concert which has become an extremely popular fixture in Bradford’s annual orchestral programme. As before, the Hallé takes centre stage, this year under the baton of rising young conductor Timothy Redmond, who has recently made highly successful debuts at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg. The programme combines some of the most popular Viennese waltzes and polkas by the Strauss family, including Tales from the Vienna Woods with its haunting introduction played on the Hungarian cimbalom, and a selection of well-loved arias from operettas by such masters as Lehar and Zeller, in which the soloist is Mary Plazas, one of England’s leading sopranos.

The Vienna Tonkünstler Orchestra is one of that city’s three established orchestras, playing alongside the Vienna Philharmonic and Vienna Symphony Orchestras. Under its dynamic new chief conductor from Columbia, Andres Orozco-Estrada, who has recently taken Vienna by storm, it plays one of the most attractive symphonies by the Austrian composer Anton Bruckner, his First Symphony, which Bruckner nick-named ‘his saucy girl’. The soloist in Beethoven’s majestic Emperor Piano Concerto is the exciting young Russian-born pianist Natasha Paremski, a major prize winner in the USA. The concert opens with the bustling Overture to one of Mozart’s finest operas, The Marriage of Figaro.

The European Union Chamber Orchestra is always a welcome visitor to Bradford. On this occasion it brings the highly-praised Russian pianist Nikolai Demidenko, now resident in the United Kingdom, as soloist. He takes the solo part in one of Mozart’s most delightful piano concertos, No 9, known as the Jeunehomme after the pianist for which it was originally composed. The Viennese connection is maintained with Haydn’s vigorous Symphony No 59, known as the Fire Symphony. Two works for strings alone complete the programme: Peter Warlock’s sprightly Capriol Suite and Liszt’s reflective Angelus, inspired by the ringing of the Angelus bells which the composer heard while living in Rome.

The great composer and conductor Gustav Mahler was one of the most important figures in the thriving Viennese musical world at the turn of the last century, and his beautiful Fourth Symphony, with its wonderful ‘Child’s view of heaven’, is one of his finest works. Under its Music Director Sir Mark Elder, the Hallé received glowing reviews for its Mahler cycle given in Manchester during 2010 as part of the 150th anniversary celebrations of Mahler’s birth. The Orchestra balances Mahler with striking works by his Finnish contemporary Sibelius, with his evocative Suite Historic Scenes, and by Handel, with the second of his ebullient Concertos for two orchestral ‘choirs’, originally written to be performed as part of his oratorio, Alexander’s Feast.
