About the LGMAThe Association was formed in January 1999 to promote music played on mandolin and guitar and to provide a forum for those people with an interest in this type of music. We encourage interest among children and adults in the mandolin and guitar and assist in their musical and instrumental development.

The LGMA is the largest organisation of its kind in the United Kingdom with 100s of children and adults now learning mandolin across Scotland. Over the past years the Association has dramatically increased its activities, with even performances abroad.

Da Capo AlbaDa Capo Alba is the Adult orchestra of the LGMA, and is currently Scotland’s largest guitar and mandolin orchestra. It comprises around 30 members who play mandolin, mandola (octave mandolin), guitar and double bass.

Members are as varied in their musical backgrounds as they are in age, with players having experience in classical, folk, rock, jazz and country music. One thing that players do have in common is that they are hard working and entertaining!

MangoMango is the Mandolin and Guitar Youth Orchestra of the LGMA. The orchestra plays a variety of music from Classical to Folk and Pop.

We invite young players who can play Guitar or Mandolin and can read music. You should be able to play at least of a standard equal to Grade 1 to join the group.

Peter Martin Allegro DesisioPerformed by MANGOPeter Martin was born in West Yorkshire. He studied violin and viola and in 1986 was appointed Head of Strings for an LEA music service in Greater Manchester. In addition to his duties as a teacher, Peter has performed regularly throughout the north of England as a free-lance violinist/violist. He has also written and arranged a great deal of educational string music, much of which has been published. The piece is originally for string orchestra but through its rhythmical nature it lends itself for mandolin & guitar orchestra.

Richard Charlton Meridian Performed by MANGORichard Charlton is widely recognised as one of Australia’s leading guitarist/composers. Sam Pottle Muppet Show Performed by Da Capo Alba This needs no introduction for fans of the famous puppet show!

Karl Friedrich Schwindl Symphony Perodique : Allegro, Andante, Vivace Performed by Da Capo AlbaFriedrich Schwindl (1737 - 1786) was a Dutch musician and composer. He worked at different courts before settling in Geneva in 1776 where he founded a music school. In 1780 he moved to Karlsruhe in Germany were he became the concertmaster of the orchestra at the court of the Margrave of Baden. His works were very popular at his time and were published in Amsterdam by Johann Nepomuk Hummel who also wrote a number of important works for mandolin. Schwindl wrote Symphonies in the style of the ”Mannheimer Schule”, chamber music, vocal music and short operas.

Freddie Mercury Bohemian RhapsodyArranged by Calum Harbison and Les Donaghy Performed by Da Capo AlbaSoloist: Kerr Samson (Electric Guitar)Bohemian Rhapsody appeared on Queen’s 1975 album ‘A Night at the Opera’. Other progressive rock bands were doing tracks with this kind of complexity and unconventional song structure at the time (ELP, Yes etc.), but Bohemian Rhapsody was unique in topping the UK singles Chart (for 9 weeks on its first release). It was also unique due to the multi-tracked operatic vocal section. Brian May, Freddie Mercury, and Roger Taylor sang their vocal parts continuously for ten to twelve hours a day. The entire piece took three weeks to record, and in places featured 180 separate overdubs. Since the studios of the time only offered 24-track analogue tape, it was necessary for them to overdub themselves many times and “bounce” these down to successive sub-mixes. In the end, eighth-generation tapes were used. It was one of the most expensive singles ever made and remains one of the most elaborate recordings in popular music history. Needless to say the song is a challenge to reproduce with a guitar & mandolin orchestra (and with no overdubs!). It is also the first Da Capo Alba piece to feature electric guitar.

Klaus Badelt and Hans Zimmerfrom the film: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl Fog Bound, The black Pearl, Medallion calls, He’s a pirateConducted by Graeme ThomsonPerformed by Da Capo AlbaSoloist: Craig Moran (Percussion)Composer Klaus Badelt started his musical career writing and producing music for dozens of highly successful movies and commercials in his native Germany. In 1998, Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer invited him to move his musical home to Media Ventures in Santa Monica, CA. Since then, Klaus has composed scores for his own film and television projects as well as collaborating with Zimmer and other composers
