The first time that a child walks into our after-school program the choice is usually an easy one -- GYM TIME! It’s difficult for the allure of time with friends on the basketball court to be overcome by the stressful experience that many kids associate with subjects like math and reading. Ca’Den Jones was no exception. When he began coming to The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club this year he avoided the homework room at all costs. Teachers and staff partnered with Ca’Den’s parents to create a plan that would help Ca’Den overcome his aversion to homework. Ca’Den began to work with the certified Fayette County teachers, program staff, and volunteers available to help him complete his homework after school. “He was reluctant at first,” says Ca’Den’s teacher. “He wanted to be walked through each step and kept getting off task. He kept saying he didn’t know how to do it.” Eventually, however, Ca’Den’s hard work and the support of his teachers began to pay off. As Ca’Den successfully completed his assignments his confidence grew and he was motivated to try even harder. By the end of the year, Ca’Den was coming to the homework room on his own and completing his homework independently. He is now conscientious, helpful, and a role model to the other students. Way to go Ca’Den! Last year, The Salvation Army helped 457 youth like Ca’Den in both their academic knowledge and personal character. Your support helps ensure that youth have the tools and support they need to reach their full potential. Ca’Den working diligently on his homework. Dear Friend,

It’s been a very busy summer andwe have so much to be thankful forhere at The Salvation Army! Afterserving the past 27 years in NortheastOhio, we recently received our newappointment in Lexington and arrivedon July 1st to a very heartwarmingwelcome. What a wonderful blessing itis for us to be in this beautiful city!

In our very short time here we have already seen howyour support has impacted the many women and familiesin our Shelter, the boys and girls in our Summer DayCamp, the precious little ones in our Early LearningCenter, and more! While walking past the gym today, wecould hear the bouncing of balls and small voices ofchildren playing. They come to have fun, but we knowthat they will receive so much more. Here, they have asafe place to stay, with healthy meals and educationalactivities to help grow their bodies and minds while theirparents work or attend school. If they stayed at homemost would be alone, hungry, and fending for themselves. We are thankful for all you do to help us help them.

When we think of your generosity and how youcontinue to help change the lives of people whom you’venever met, we are truly at a loss to express our gratitude.Your support is even more vital this year, as we have

Affordable Childcare Helps Family Build a Strong Foundation

Maria and Khloe’s family came to The Salvation Army in February of 2015after falling into a financial crisis that left them homeless. In order to pursuetheir careers and become self-sufficient, Maria and Khloe’s parents first neededto find affordable childcare for the girls. Both girls were enrolled in our EarlyLearning Center which provides educational childcare to over one hundredlow-income children each year at little or no cost. Their mother was relievedthat the girls would receive a strong educational foundation.

Maria and Khloe’s teacher joyfully explained a bit about the sisters, “Khloeinstantly acquainted herself with the daycare, while Maria is still getting used to all the activities and becoming moreindependent.” Four year old Maria and her three year old sister Khloe benefit from the many learning opportunitieshere, as well as guidance and care from the teachers. Khloe is most happy in the kitchen area of her classroom, muchlike her father who is pursuing a culinary career. Maria enjoys socializing and dancing with the other students.Maria has made a habit out of giving thanks for her meals whether she’s at The Early Learning Center, or with herfamily.

“I like that The Salvation Army has the Christian background, I like that they can get that opportunity for afoundation now,” said their mother Brianna. The Early Learning Center students are given the opportunity toparticipate in songs and devotions once a week in the chapel area.

Brianna said, “Without the Early Learning Center, they wouldn’t have access to any of those resources oropportunities. It’s helped us immensely.”

Emergency Homeless ShelterHuman Trafficking Victim Finds a Safe Place and a Fresh Start

Most of the stories we share include a picture of thefamily whose life you’ve helped to change, but this onedoes not. Approximately 25% of the women we servereport experiencing past abuse. Many, like SiennaJackson, come to The Salvation Army in order toescape their abusers. We have chosen to change namesand omit pictures in order to protect Sienna and herchild’s privacy and safety.

Sienna was abused at an early age, an experience that she says ledher to continue on a path of destructive behavior into adulthood. Falsepromises of love, fame, and fortune drew her into abusive relationshipsthat left her trapped as a victim of human trafficking.

Realizing just how much danger she was in, Sienna decided shewanted to start over and provide a better life for her daughter. Siennafled her home and came to The Salvation Army to start over with twoyear old Kayla.

At The Salvation Army, Sienna found much needed safe housing, medical care, counseling, job & life skills classes and other supportiveservices to help her on her journey towards self-sufficiency. Havingalways lived under the control of others, Sienna says she needed helplearning how to make decisions on her own. The support of her casemanager helped her do just that.

Kayla was enrolled in our Early Learning Center, where Sienna saysher daughter began to grow in confidence. Kayla had never before hadaccess to early education and was scared to go at first, but now happilyjoins her classmates when she is dropped off each day.

Today, Sienna and Kayla have an apartment of their own. Sienna isparticipating in a vocational rehabilitation program that gives her theopportunity to volunteer with local senior citizens. Sienna says sheenjoys her work and wants to pursue a degree in nursing so that she cancontinue to help others. Her ultimate goal is to help other young womenexperiencing abuse to find a path to safety like she did.
