I recently bought a computer program to help record and put together my family tree. Both my family and my wife’s have been traced back to the late 1600s and, once the tree was printed, I mar-veled at how many lives had to be brought together, how many indi-vidual stories were intertwined, to prepare the ground for the begin-ning of my daughter’s own tale. I saw how the hand of God was at work across the globe and through the ages so that early one August morning, my little girl might come into this world.

Now, my own tale has been writ-ten for some 28 years now and I am still humbled by the storied nature of life. I am still amazed at how, through the providence of God, one life can affect another; how our lives, our stories, can come together and create life, foster love, and en-courage growth and maturity.

Since coming on staff at the college, the Lord has opened my eyes to the stories of some 70 students. And as I have had the opportunity and privilege to teach them and learn from them, to have eaten and enjoyed life together with them, I have once again seen the hand of God at work across the globe and throughout the ages. Hearing students mention the names of friends, family, pastors, and supporters, I have heard how you, our readers, have been the hands and feet of God shaping the lives and purposes of these students. It is wonderful to hear how your own stories have come together to perpetuate the family of God at the college.

In partnership with you, I look forward to seeing how the time spent here will pay dividends as our students affect our world for the Kingdom of God. I look forward to hearing stories of how their lives have infl uenced others. And I want to thank you for investing your lives in the lives of our students so that these things are possible. Thank you for your prayers, your support, and your faith in us to disciple this genera-tion to become committed and serving members of the family of God. To paraphrase the Apostle Paul’s words, I am confi dent that the one who begins such good works among us will bring them to completion by the day of Jesus Christ.

Again, thank you for being a part of our students’ stories and their Christian family tree.

As I refl ect on the experience I have had in GODiscipleship, I can’t help but think about how the disciples were taught by Jesus. They were able to be in different settings with Jesus and experience the abundance of life he displayed. I strongly believe that as we continue to help form GODiscipleship the next participants will experience the same life that the disciples saw in Jesus, and that I have seen.

Dean Garrioch, GoDiscipleship Student, Cross Lake, Manitoba

In my past semester I’ve slowly, through God, been reintroduced to hope, faith and love. I’ve met men and women who have had very little, yet share their life stories with me, expressing what God has done in their lives. I’ve made new friends and seen old friends in my travels this semester. But more importantly, I’ve gotten to know myself and Jesus a whole lot better while being a part of GO-Discipleship.

Brian Carswell, GoDiscipleship Student, Regina, Saskatchewan

In this initial year of GODiscipleship we had 5 students join. In our fi rst semester we ministered in Swift Current, Saskatoon, and Winnipeg. We have been able to work both with churches as well as several organizations working with the impoverished. This semester we will be going to Edmonton, Calgary and Cross Lake Reserve in Manitoba. In each of these opportunities students are able to learn various types of ministry while learning where they may fi t as ministers.

My name is Brianna and I am in my second year of classes. When the begin-ning of this year came I was put on academic probation. This meant that I had to meet with my academic advisor once a month and make sure I was keeping on track with a homework schedule that I had to make at the beginning of the term stating when things were due and when I would start the assignments. I found throughout the semester that I could fi nd that balance between social life and school work. I found it very helpful to be able to meet with my academic advisor not only once a month but whenever I got stressed about assignments. The aca-

demic advisors are always around if you need help or if you just need a tip to keep the stress down. Because of the probation and the help of my advisor, I got to see my marks shoot up into the high 70’s and 80’s over the last term. I am so grateful for the staff here that are always around to help and encourage you to strive better for yourself and Christ!

Brianna Stirton, Sophomore student, Clavet, Saskatchewan

Heather Bonin, Freshman student, High River, Alberta The word that comes to mind when I think of Eston College is “unexpected”. My fi rst impression of the school went something like, “Here? Really? What have I done?!” However, I failed to realize that God can make any place or situation an adventure; it all depends on my attitude. Within the fi rst week I found that Eston College has something different to offer its students: a challenge. Wanting to know God on a deeper level, seeing Him truly take over your life; these challenges, along with a myriad of others, have presented themselves to each and every student in all aspects of their life. I know that I never would have guessed that coming to

a little Bible college in a small town would be one of the best experiences I have ever had. I am continually digging deeper in my faith thanks to the classes, the strong leadership, the friendships made, and the many opportunities that are provided to allow us see our faith in action. Go Eston!

Updates

Kyle Mason graduated with his Bachelor in Biblical Studies in April 2005 and now lives in Winnipeg. The following are excerpts from December’s Canstar Community News written by Janine LeGal.

Kyle Mason grew up in the North End with his single mother and two siblings and re-members looking for a place to belong when he was a teenager. Luckily, he found it at a local church. Many years later, he is trying to create a similarly welcoming environment for others in the community. The North End Family Centre is his way of providing a place that offers a sense of belonging to those who need it…

Founded by Mason, 31, the centre offi cially opened in October… The centre, which is located at 1322 Main St., provides two public access computers, a fax machine and offers visitors a free

voicemail box system. A washer and dryer are available for people to do laundry free of charge as well as a play area for the children. A community living room is provided where visitors can relax, have coffee and chat. Most impor-tantly, the centre serves as a meeting place for people in the neighborhood to get to know their neighbours.

“I care about my home. I grew up here. It’s a neighbourhood with some challenges but a lot of people really care about this area and making it a positive and safe environment. I want to be part of that,” Mason says.

Mason attended college in Saskatchewan with the intent of becoming a minister. He was a youth pastor in Stone-wall before moving to Dryden, Ont., where he was invited to work at a local food bank. It was there that he fell in love with community work. “This is where my heart is, being part of the community. It’s an expression of my faith,” says Mason, who is once again living in the North End…

The centre receives between 10 and 25 visitors each day. It has been a welcome addition to the neighbourhood, especially for single mothers in the area who were really being under-served, Mason says….Mason plans to continue to build on his vision for a closer community and to welcome all who need a safe place. “We are part of a faith of love and acceptance. We have no hidden agenda, no strings attached, we are here for everybody,” he says.

Colin Berry graduated from FGBI in 1989, and was serving with Operation Mobilization at the time of his death. The following was taken with permission from OM Canada’s newsletter bottomline:

“Colin Berry grew up in Edmonton. He met his Venezuelan wife, Lizyanet, 16 years ago in Turkey. They joined the OM team in 2005. Rachel was born in 1998. On August 11, 2009, they were travelling in North Dakota en route to Ontario to return to Turkey. Colin lost control of the vehicle, crossed the median and crashed into a truck. Both he and Rachel were killed.

Colin and Lizyanet were valued members of the Turkey team, responsible for organizing short-term outreaches…. They knew the risks of ministry in Turkey, especially of publicly pro-claiming the gospel, but were convinced that God had opened the doors and called them to

this. Colin and Lizyanet led outreaches with local churches that were not only effective, but earned the respect and admiration of other local church leaders. As a result, people made professions of faith, began attending church, and many local believers were encouraged to share their faith more boldly.

Pray for Lizyanet’s recovery and future leading.”

Throughout the years, we have had the privilege of being able to spend time in prayer for folks in need. It is our fi rm belief that God answers prayer and it is our habit to pray! Whether it is for someone struggling with an illness like cancer, for a national disaster or the death of a loved one, those at Eston College appreciate partnering with others who know the great value of calling out to God for help. If you would like us to pray for you or someone you know, please do not hesitate to contact us. We can be reached at 888-440-3424.

On January 15, 2010, Timothy Miller (03-07) cele-brated receiving his Master of Arts in Christian The-ology from the University of Durham. Celebrating with Timothy were his wife Meagan Ziegenhagel (05), Tim’s brother Jesse (who is currently doing his internship in Cumbria) and Timothy’s parents Lauren and Ruth Miller, who travelled to Durham from Rosetown, SK to witness the graduation cere-monies held in the magnifi cent Durham Cathedral. The next step for Timothy and Meagan is a move to London in September in order for Meagan to begin her schooling in interior design.

Both Daycee (Siggelkow 94-97, 01) Richardson and Steve Atkins (90-93) were on campus this January during our Mini-Semester. Daycee taught a very practical, hands-on course focusing on Children, Ministry and God, while Steve co-taught (with Jodi Hartung) an intensive one-week class on Ministering to Adolescents. We are grateful to Hillcrest Apostolic Church in Moose Jaw for lending Daycee and Steve to the college; Daycee serves as the Children’s pastor, and Steve leads Youth Ministries there. Kyli Mortensen was a student in Ministering to Adolescents: “It was more than I expected. It was not just a class to sit and listen, but was really interactive, it was fun, and Steve and Jodi were really passionate about what they were teaching. What I learned was not just about youth ministry, either – I discovered things in class that helped me understand myself and the process of my own maturing in fresh, helpful ways.”

LifeForce England for upcoming missions as a creative director; (2) to work as a teacher’s assistant in both primary and secondary schools where she will help teach Religious Education and a special segment on Christianity and the Spirit. Her internship will conclude with her leading a missions team to Gambia in the spring.

Anna Siddons will be in-terning in Regina, SK, with Moosomin Constituency MLA, Don Toth, Speaker of the Legislative Assem-bly. This experience will give her opportunity to

Jesse Miller has travelled to beautiful St. Bees, Eng-land to serve as a staff/teacher’s assistant under the leadership of Rev. Lars Nowen, a school chaplain. Jesse will be teaching reli-

gious studies courses, conducting chapel services, tutoring students and creating a manga. This will give him opportunity to explore his love of learning and exercise his giftings in teaching and communica-tion both in class and through the arts.

Sean Stevenson-Douglas is interning on-campus at Eston College as a teach-er’s assistant under our Theology professor, Elmer Chen. This valuable expe-rience will allow Sean to

continue to pour into the lives of stu-dents both in and out of the classroom, thus equipping him for future academic study while continuing to mentor and disciple other students.

Jane Galbreath worked with AYMI in Calgary from May to September and will be fi nishing her internship as a LifeForce leader in Saskatoon, SK, from October to April. Her

team focuses on living in community and reaching their neighbourhood by build-ing relationships, working in schools and supporting existing mission agencies in the area. Jane has a passion for reaching the poor and hurting both in our nation and around the world.

A letter from Eston College Board member Lyla Veinot

Lyla Veinot, Surrey, B.C.Customer Service CoordinatorCoast Mountain Bus Company

There it goes again – time just fl ying by. We are already halfway through another year at Eston College - it always catches me by surprise when I think how quickly the school year goes by. But how wonderful to think that in this year another 75 or so young lives will have been touched and changed by the hand of God. Through the ministry of the dedicated staff and faculty at Eston College, our future pastors, missionaries and lay leaders will have been imparted with wisdom, stronger faith and a deeper knowledge of God’s love for them.

Eston College has always been part of my personal history, and many of my family members have attended over the years. I graduated in 1981 and am now following in my father, Len Peterson’s, footsteps – serving on the Board of Directors. Even though I had been a Christian from a young age, my time at Eston College impacted my life immensely. I learned what it meant to have a deep and personal relationship with Christ and that we are called to serve him with our daily lives. The three years I spent in Eston changed my life forever – I am so thankful for the privilege I had of attending this school.

What a heritage we have in Eston College! For the past 65+ years this small college in Northern Saskatchewan has been faithfully and steadfastly equipping young adults from as far away as Japan to face a needy world with the message of God’s transforming power. For nearly a generation, we have been blessed with committed men and women who have dedicated their lives to preparing our young people for ministry. There is no doubt that the hand of God has been on this campus and that He is still working in the hearts of the young men and women who attend every year.

However, it must be said - for Eston College to continue to provide spiritual mentorship, quality education and service to our future leaders, we need your help! I know that many of you have been supporting and contributing to the life of Eston College for many years. We so appreciate your faithful giving! However, the work is not done – there are still more young people whose lives need to be impacted by the unique experience that is Eston College.

But can we continue to give and give and give? I believe the answer is “YES!” - because there is no limit to God’s provision. Where there seems no hope – there is God! Where there seems no supply – there is God! When it seems that the well is dry – there is God! I believe that God wants to continue to equip our young people through Eston College and therefore, I believe that he will provide the funds we need to continue.

Please prayerfully consider if you can give any amount to support Eston College this year. What a privilege to be able to contribute to what God has planned for the College and the young lives that pass through its doors every year. And when we are able to look back on these years, we will be able to say with joy that “this was the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes.” Mark 12:11

Hand in hand with the Word of God is our passion for prayer. God asks us to pray and we know that He answers prayer. With technology bringing news to us in an instant, we are immediately aware of the challenges that our world faces. At Eston College we want to participate in alleviating some of the pain and suffering by joining our voices with others in prayer.

Please pray that Haiti would experience, in great measure, the goodness and faithfulness of God. Pray that God would supply the necessary resources to provide and sustain life and that all the Haitian people would turn to Him in worship. Pray also that we would not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Pray that where there is oppression and tyranny and injustice, God would exercise kindness, righteousness and jus-tice. We know that God’s willingness to do so far outweighs the efforts of those who seek to work evil.

Pray that those who are fi ghting a life-threatening disease would know the comfort, peace and joy of our Saviour and that God would bring miraculous healing to their bodies. Pray that they would have an exceptional sense of His presence and that His infi nite love would fl ood their lives.

Please pray that as disciples at Eston College, we would be daily responsive to the Holy Spirit and live submissive, obedient lives to Christ. Pray that God would be glorifi ed through our World Action Teams (WAT) and at Encounter Senior High Weekend, Encounter Junior High Weekend, College Experience Weekend, Graduation, and Board Meet-ings.

Finally, please pray that God will supply all of our needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
