About the Boulder Phil

Under the vision and leadership of Music Director Michael Butterman, the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra is celebrating its 57th year of providing outstanding orchestral music highlighting the creative talents of our own unique community. The Boulder Phil is a critically acclaimed professional orchestra, presenting performances nine months out of the year and employing a core of 72 of our region’s most highly trained musicians.

Voted “Best Classical Music” multiple times by the readers of Boulder Weekly, the Boulder Phil’s main performance venue is Macky Auditorium on the CU-Boulder campus, a historic concert hall which recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. The Boulder Phil’s Masterworks series—broadcast across the state on Colorado Public Radio—features a dynamic mix of masterpieces and promising new works, highlighting both accomplished and emerging guest artists with a special emphasis on Boulder’s own creative community.

The orchestra’s broad reach in the community includes special events such as the annual co-production of The Nutcracker with the Boulder Ballet and “Café Phil” open rehearsal nights at the Dairy Center for the Arts. The Boulder Phil also works to inspire the next generation of music-lovers through its Discovery Concerts reaching 4th and 5th grade students across multiple counties.

Founded in 1958, the Boulder Phil became a fully professional ensemble under the leadership of Theodore Kuchar, who began his tenure as music director in 1996. Michael Butterman was named music director in 2006, bringing a strong emphasis on education and outreach, as well as a creative approach to programming that includes a focus on collaborations with other local artists. Under his direction, the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra reflects and fosters all that makes Boulder special—its creativity, spirit, beauty and quest for knowledge. By connecting people to orchestral music, the Boulder Phil strives to be an essential part of our community's cultural fabric.


About the Boulder Ballet

The origins of Boulder Ballet begin with the Ballet Arts Studio, founded by former Amer-ican Ballet Theatre dancer Larry Boyette and British dancer Barbara Demaree. The first performing company, Boulder City Ballet, was founded in 1982 by Barbara Demaree and Wanda Tierney. In 1985 the company changed its name to Boulder Ballet Ensemble, and in 1995 to Boulder Ballet. Since 1989, Boulder Ballet has enjoyed a partnership with the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra in presenting classical ballets complete with professional scenery, costumes, lighting designs, and casts of up to 100 dancers.

The Boulder Ballet Company has grown and flourished with its community for 30 years. Our rich history of bringing classic, contemporary, and uniquely theatrical ballet to an audi-ence that stretches from Estes Park to Highlands Ranch is enjoyed by those attending. Bar-bara Demaree who saw the West as open, inviting, and eager to embrace the arts, planted the seed of classic Western European Ballet amidst the beauty of the American West. Boulder Ballet is the result of the community’s nurturing of that seed, having embedded deep roots and grown to new heights. The regional company has had a number of strong influences including the versatile artistry of Milenko Banovich (Zagred Ballet), Robin Haig (Royal Ballet), and John Prinz (American Ballet Theatre).

Artistic Directors for the past nine years, Ana Claire and Peter Davison have continued to build on the proud tradition of artistic excellence through innovation. They have challenged their dancers and enlightened their audiences with the versatile productions from the con-temporary Stepping Out, to the classic The Nutcracker, to the timeless tale of Cinderella. Peter Davison’s own creative choreography is a mesmerizing synergy of dancers and unusual props. Peter’s innovation was recognized with the 2009 New York Ballet Builders Award, which re-sulted in Boulder Ballet’s New York premiere of his critically acclaimed Cirque D’Amour. With a profound respect for their art, the duo has expanded and refined the company’s season to over 20 performances reaching over 20,000 in the Denver Metro area and beyond.

The Boulder Ballet School (BBS) provides ballet training for all ages, pre-school through adult, in a uniquely artistic and creative atmosphere. As a professional-track ballet school BBS challenges students dedicated to pursuing dance as a career, but also welcomes those who dance purely for enjoyment.

The Director of the Boulder Ballet School since 1999, Ana Claire has successfully recruited an outstanding faculty with international performing and teaching experience. The sev-en-level curriculum is designed to produce well-rounded artists who achieve not only techni-cal proficiency but also an essential expressive quality in their dancing. To achieve this, the classical ballet technique is augmented with modern dance, character dance, and physical theater. Such comprehensive training prepares students for the many artistic challenges demanded of professional dancers.

A particularly unique feature of the school is the largest dance program in the region developed specifically for boys. Geared towards ages seven & above, this program includes Boyz Dance – a unique mix of dance, mime and juggling – and Boys Ballet which focuses specifically on the male classical technique.

Our students have excelled in a number of competitions including the world’s largest, the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP), where BBS students have won first-place awards and the regional Grand Prix (single highest award) and have been invited to perform in New York City among the world’s finest young dancers. Former Boulder Ballet School students have gone on to dance with world-class companies throughout the world including American Ballet Theatre, Ballet British Columbia, Hubbard Street Dance, Mark Morris Dance Group, Miami City Ballet, Norwegian National Ballet, England’s Royal Ballet, and San Francisco Ballet, to name a few.

Boulder Ballet classes are held in our three spacious studios at the Dairy Center for the Arts in central Boulder. In addition, the Dairy Performance Space – a 250-seat dance the-ater – is used for classes as well as performances. Stepping Out 2014Each year, Boulder Ballet’s professional company

presents a variety concert of original dance/theater works at the Dairy Center for the Arts that is one of the most anticipated events of the season. This season’s concert, Stepping Out 2014, will present a variety of approaches to the art of ballet today.

Guest choreographer James Wallace, a former Artistic Director of Denver’s acclaimed Dawson/Wallace Dance Project and winner of the Ballet Builders Award for New Choreography, will create a new work for Boulder Ballet’s stunning company of dancers. Mr. Wallace torques classical technique, including dance en pointe, to extraordinary new movements and images.

The performance will also include contemporary works to a variety of music by resident choreographer Alex Davison, a former dancer with Miami City Ballet, and Artistic Directors Ana Claire and Peter Davison.

Stepping Out 2014 is appropriate for audiences ages 7 and up.

Storybook Ballet – C’est La VieEvery year, Boulder Ballet School brings a familiar tale to life through the beautiful art of dance in Storybook Ballet. This year, enjoy the fanciful saga of a shy prince in search of his Princess Charming. With the aid of two fairy guides (one with villainous intent), he sojourns through the world’s most popular fairytales, meeting Rapunzel, Snow White, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty. But will he find the girl of his dreams and live happily ever after? Find out in C’est La Vie!

With original choreography by Ana Claire, original music from Brian Golden, and a cast of skillful young dancers, this story will magically come to life before your eyes!

The Boulder Philharmonic believes that live orchestral music is for everyone and is committed to providing a wide array of opportunities for people throughout our community to encounter the life-enriching power of classical music.

• Discovery Concerts introduce 4th and 5th graders throughout the Boulder Valley School District and beyond to live symphonic music. Boulder Ballet’s Commitment to CommunityBoulder Ballet Artistic Director Peter Davison once said, “Everything we do grows out

of community.” He was not just speaking of choreography and artistic vision. He was also speaking of the impact of sharing and connecting through the art of ballet. Boulder Ballet has grown and flourished for more than a quarter of a century on the Front Range; our roots are deep in Colorado. So, too, is our commitment to community through our education and outreach programs.

Since its inception more than a decade ago, Steps in Time remains a much-requested educational outreach program. Originally choreographed by Ana Claire, the program seamlessly illustrates the history of ballet and its continuing influence on all forms of dance. Through beautiful choreography, humorous narration, and powerful dancing by our professional company, Steps in Time moves students beyond stereotypes and opens their eyes to the precision, expression and athleticism of ballet. Students of diverse backgrounds are exposed to an early and enriching live arts experience in the comfort and security of their own schools.

Each year this lively, interactive education program is presented to over 4,000 students in five different Front Range counties. In particular, Boulder Ballet reaches out to a large number of Title 1 schools–often with few arts resources–and students in free/reduced lunch programs. For many of these children, it is their first exposure to ballet and they love it.

Boulder Ballet’s artist-in-residence program, Poetry of Motion, features a

Boulder Ballet instructor in residence at the school for up to two weeks. This program is designed to make a long-lasting impact on the minds and hearts of the students through the integration of dance and movement into the school’s curricula. Poetry of Motion enables students to explore their world through observing, moving their bodies, and interacting with familiar objects and each other. One teacher responded, “Thanks to the Boulder Ballet for introducing movement and drama to kids this way. It is a much needed skill for our students to gain body awareness and confidence. And it is even more needed for children whose lives are so filled with test preparation and testing, and rarely get the opportunity to express themselves and move!”

Boulder Ballet is equally committed to the successful community outreach programs Open Rehearsals and Ballet in the Park. In the past nine years, we have reached over 15,000 underserved individuals who are frequently excluded from exposure to the performing arts. These two programs were specifically designed to remove the financial barrier to participation. Through Open Rehearsals, Boulder Ballet works with key social-service organizations to distribute free tickets to full-scale dress rehearsals of our major productions–including the ever popular Nutcracker in collaboration with the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra. Our free, outdoor summer concert series, Ballet in the Park, also reaches out to low-income families, teens in crisis, struggling single parents, and seniors on fixed incomes. Our Nutcracker StoryAct One

It’s Christmas Eve and a young girl, Clara, is put to bed by her parents as they leave for a party. Quickly asleep, she dreams she is at a festive Christmas Eve party in a strange home, surrounded by family and friends. Clara’s godfather, the mysterious Drosselmeyer, arrives and entertains the children with magic tricks, juggling, and life-size dancing dolls. He gives Clara a nutcracker doll that she adores, but her brother Fritz is envious and steals it, tripping and breaking it. Magically, Drosselmeyer quickly mends it with his handkerchief.

The party ends and Clara goes off to bed, forgetting her nutcracker doll. When she returns to look for it in the darkened living room, she fi nds Drosselmeyer still there. Suddenly, midnight strikes and strange things begin to happen. Human-sized mice dart through the shadows, the Christmas tree grows to astounding heights, and huge rats appear, led by the fearsome Rat King. Then toy soldiers and the Nutcracker (also large as life) march in to protect Clara and engage the rats in a fi erce battle. When the Rat King strikes the Nutcracker to the fl oor, Clara takes her shoe and swings a fatal blow to the Rat King’s head.

The battle over, Clara fi nds herself in a snow-covered forest, and discovers that she has become a young woman. Then she sees that the Nutcracker, recovering from the battle, is now a handsome prince. They embark together on a journey through a snow-covered forest with dancing snowfl akes and frost.

Act Two

Continuing to dream, Clara and her Nutcracker Prince are led by Drosselmeyer to the realm of angels, who escort them to the Land of Sweets. They are welcomed by dignitaries who present them to the queen, the Sugar Plum Fairy. She asks how her visitors won admission to her land and the Prince reenacts the battle with the Rat King including Clara’s heroic rescue. The people of the Land of Sweets rejoice over the victory and award Clara a crown and the key to their realm.

The Sugar Plum Fairy delights Clara and her Prince with a tour of her domain. Dancers from Spain, Arabia, China and Russia entertain the visitors. The Mirlitons, dancing to the music of reed fl utes, and a larger-than-life Mother Goose and her nursery rhymes dance too. Next, the Sugar Plum Fairy herself dances for the guests. Then Clara and her Prince walk with other couples in a garden of waltzing fl owers and are inspired to perform a pas de deux of their own. As the people of the Land of Sweets reappear, it’s time to leave.

Clara awakens from her dream, once more a little girl. But then, Drosselmeyer appears and places her nutcracker doll in her arms before vanishing. Was her dream real – or is this a dream yet to come?


Artistic DirectorsANA CLAIRE is the Director of the Boulder Ballet School, which has more than tripled in size under her direction. Although born in Boulder, Ana grew up on a ranch near Fairplay, Colorado. At the age of eight she saw American Ballet Theatre perform Swan Lake and fell in love with the art of ballet. In an extraordinary gift of support, Ana’s mother then drove her to ballet classes in Denver throughout her childhood. Ana has studied ballet with Maxine Williamson, Fernando Schaffenberg, Milenko Banovich, Barbara Demaree, and Larry Boyette. She has performed with Fort Worth Ballet, Fort Worth Opera, David Taylor Dance Theater, Aladdin Theater, Boulder’s Dinner Theatre, Jan Justis Dance Company, and 3rd Law Dance/Theater, among others. Ana was a principal ballerina with Boulder Ballet for many years, and was twice voted “Boulder’s Best” by

the Daily Camera. For 21 years she has produced, directed, and choreographed an annual Storybook Ballet, each with original music, scenery, and costumes created in collaboration with local artists, and co-choreographed the 1998, ‘99, and all productions since 2001 of Boulder Ballet’s Nutcracker. Ana originated Boulder Ballet’s acclaimed outreach program Steps in Time which has been performed at numerous schools throughout the Boulder/Denver area. Ana studied dance pedagogy at Texas Christian University, attended the teacher training workshop with former New York City Ballet principal Jillana, and has over 27 years of teaching experience. She is a passionate teacher, dedicated to helping students achieve technical excellence while nurturing their individual artistry, and many of her students have gone on to professional careers in dance.

PETER DAVISON brings 38 years of diverse performing experience to his role as Co-Artistic Director of Boulder Ballet. His childhood idols were Alexander Calder and Batman, infl uences that led to training in visual art, juggling, and dance. While a teenager, Peter began his professional career street performing in Los Angeles, and as a variety artist for Hollywood fi lms, such as Xanadu with Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly. He moved to Boulder in 1980. Peter studied ballet with Larry Boyette, Ana Claire, Barbara Demaree, Finis Jhung and Donald Mahler; modern dance with Danelle Helander, and tap with Susan Hadley and Lynn Dally, among others. In 1982 Peter became a founding member of the juggling and dance trio Airjazz with whom he appeared at venues such as the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, New Zealand International Festival of the

Arts, BAM, and the Hong Kong Arts Festival. Peter has also been a member of David Taylor Dance Theater, Jan Justis Dance Company, Kim Robards Dance, 3rd Law Dance/Theater, and performed principal roles with Boulder Ballet from 1987 to 2000. He has toured his solo work throughout the U.S. and to Canada, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Netherlands and Spain, and has appeared as a featured soloist on the CBS, BBC and Fox television networks. Peter has received numerous awards and grants including the Arts Innovation Award from the Colorado Federation of the Arts, and the Performance Fellowship from the Colorado Council on the Arts. Peter has choreographed works for several Colorado-based dance companies and schools. In 2009, excerpts from his Cirque D’Amour were performed by Boulder Ballet in New York City following his receipt of the Ballet Builders Award for New Choreography.


Company DancersAMY FOGARTY, from Eden Prarie, Minnesota began her dance training at age nine, studying and competing in all disciplines of dance. At age 13, she joined a contemporary youth ballet company, La Danse Fatale, under the direction of Julia Levina. She left Minnesota at age 16 and completed her junior and senior years of high school at The Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington, D.C., under the direction of Oleg Vinogradov and Marat Daukayev. She has also had the pleasure of studying with many different companies, her favorites being American Ballet Theatre, Pacifi c Northwest

Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem, and the New National Theatre Ballet of Tokyo. Upon graduating from Kirov, Amy moved to Denver, performing for Colorado Ballet, under the direction of Gil Boggs. She has also performed with the Dawson Wallace Dance Project, under the direction of James Wallace and Gregory Dawson, where she has been given numerous opportunities to dance lead roles, her favorite being the lead in Gregory Dawson’s Abstract Permutations. This past year she collaborated with Collective Body Dance Lab performing for Brian Carey Chung in New York and Chicago. This is Amy’s second season with Boulder Ballet.

RACHEL HABER was born and raised in Denver, Colorado. She trained at the Academy of Colorado Ballet on scholarship under the direction of Inessa Plekhanova. While studying at the academy Rachel competed in Youth America Grand Prix regionals where she ultimately gained a spot at the fi nals in New York City. In June of 2003, she graduated from the academy with honors and joined Colorado Ballet as an apprentice, performing in numerous ballets for the company, including Dracula, The Nutcracker, Don Quixote, Swan Lake, Peter Pan, and Rubies. The following year Rachel was invited to the

Cerri Ballet Academy in Tokyo, Japan as a guest artist, performing principal and soloist roles in Raymonda, Paquita, and The Nutcracker. Rachel has also danced professionally with Ballet Austin, Burklyn Ballet Theatre, and Denver Ballet. This is Rachel’s seventh season with Boulder Ballet.

MATTHEW HELMS began his training in Colorado on full scholarship at the Academy of Classical Ballet, where he danced principal roles in The Nutcracker, Giselle and Le Corsaire. He then studied on full scholarship with Mark and Sandra Carlson, and German Zamuel at the International Ballet School where he performed soloist roles in The Nutcracker and Peter Pan. Matthew competed in the 2008 Youth America Grand Prix and the 2008 Denver Ballet Guild Competition where he received a full scholarship to The Ballet West Academy in Salt Lake City, Utah. Matthew has been a guest artist

with ballet companies in Utah, California and Idaho, and for the last three years has performed leading roles in ballets such as The Nutcracker, Paquita, The Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote, and Le Corsaire. He choreographed a contemporary ballet that was premiered in the Ballet West Academy Spring show in 2009. Matthew was promoted to the Ballet West Pre-Professional Trainee Program in 2010 and has trained with artists from American Ballet Theatre, Ballet West, Joffrey Ballet, Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance, Kirov Ballet and David Taylor Dance Theater. Matthew has studied martial arts since age three, has been acting since age four, and has appeared in movies, commercials and TV shows as an actor or a fi ght choreographer. This is Matthew’s fourth season with Boulder Ballet.


Company Dancers

MELISSA HESLEP received her training at the School of Orlando City Ballet for 13 years under the direction of Beatrix Aldana and spent her summers training with teachers including Luba Gulyaeva, Mark Spivak, Valeria Sinyavakaya, and Veronica Aldana. She performed with the student company until 2001, and upon graduation was accepted into the 2002 Youth America Grand Prix fi nals in NYC. In Orlando, she has performed with Russian Ballet under the direction of Vadim Fedotov and has spent the last fi ve seasons with Central Florida Ballet under the direction of Vasile Petrutiu. She has also had

the opportunity to travel as a guest artist for many venues in the United States. Her repertoire includes classics such as The Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, and The Nutcracker, and contemporary works. This is Melissa’s fourth season with Boulder Ballet.

RADOSLAW KOKOSZKA, a native of Wodzislaw Sl., Poland, began his early ballet training as a boarding student at the Ludomir Rozycki State Ballet School in Bytom, Poland. At age 13, he moved to the United States with his family, settling in Hamtramck, MI. He received numerous talent scholarships and trained at a number of prestigious professional schools including the Harid Conservatory (FLA), Boston Ballet (MA), Kirov Academy (Washington, DC) and the renowned School of American Ballet (NYC), from which he graduated. Mr. Kokoszka was a choreographer for the New

York Choreographic Institute before dancing professionally with Carolina Ballet, New York’s emerging Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, and the Suzanne Farrell Ballet, where he had the great honor of performing George Balanchine’s Don Quixote for the annual acclaimed Edinburgh Dance Festival in Scotland (2006). Kokoszka has served as Co-Director of Ballet Renaissance, a Detroit based nonprofi t organization committed to educating and inspiring community through dance, since June of 2006. He is an instructor for Studio West’s Ballet Master’s Program in both Loveland and Ft. Collins and for Ballet Renaissance in Estes Park. This is Radoslaw’s fi rst season with Boulder Ballet.

JUSTIN MCMILLAN was fi rst introduced to ballet at age eight by his mother, Joanna, who brought him and his brothers along to her ballet classes. His brothers didn’t stick with it, but Justin did. He danced alongside his mother for many years with Mary Knight at the Mendocino Ballet in Ukiah, CA, attending summer sessions at San Francisco Ballet School, Marin Ballet, and the School of American Ballet. He completed his training at Dance Theatre Seven in Fairfax, CA, with David Roxander and Jody White. During the last 19 years Justin has danced professionally with San Francisco Ballet, Tulsa Ballet,

and, most recently, Richmond Ballet, dancing principal roles during their home season and on tour, including appearances at The Joyce Theatre in New York City. Justin has danced ballets from a multitude of diverse choreographers including George Balanchine, Nacho Duato, Val Caniparoli, and Helgi Tomasson. His favorite roles include Tybalt in Malcolm Burn’s Romeo and Juliet, one of the leads in John Butler’s Carmina Burana, and the Snow King and Sugar Plum Cavalier in multiple productions of The Nutcracker. Justin has appeared as a guest artist with Boulder Ballet, and this is his fi rst season as a company member.

EMILY SPEED is originally from Argyle, Texas and began her professional training under Marina Almayeva. Emily won fi rst and third place in the classical division at the 2007 and 2008 Youth America Grand Prix Regional competitions, fi rst place for her duet in 2008 and competed from 2004 to 2008 in the YAGP Finals in New York. In 2006, she was a Finalist at the World Ballet Competition in Orlando, Florida. Emily was one of a hundred participants worldwide who qualifi ed and competed in the 2010 Varna International Ballet


Company DancersCompetition in Varna, Bulgaria. During her career she has danced in several professional companies including Colorado Ballet, Alabama Ballet, and Ballet Tucson. Emily has danced multiple principal and soloist roles including Flower Girl and Mercedes in Don Quixote, roles in George Balanchine’s Serenade and The Nutcracker, Anthony Tudor’s Lilac Garden and Continuo, Daniel Precup’s Bolero, Third Act Raymonda, The Wedding Pas de Deux from Don Quixote and the Fairy Doll Pas de Trois staged by Amanda McKerrow and John Gardner. She has been invited to guest with various schools and companies around the U.S. as well as international festivals and gala performances. Emily has appeared as a guest artist with Boulder Ballet, and this is her fi rst season as a company member.

KATHRYN WAGNER, a native of Colorado, trained at the Arvada Center with Christina Noel-Adcock, Eve Paris, and Lisi Elsey. Kathryn has performed in numerous productions and outreaches with the Arvada Center Dance Theater, and is now co-artistic director and choreographer for the pre-professional performance group. Additionally, Kathryn is an instructor for the Arvada Center’s Dance Department, teaching aspiring dancers of all ages, and Arts Days program, offering art-centered, curriculum-based workshops to schools and corporate offi ces. In addition to teaching at the Arvada Center, Kathryn is

an instructor for Boulder Ballet School. As a company member with Boulder Ballet, Kathryn’s favorite roles include ‘Sugar Plum Fairy’ in The Nutcracker, ‘Carabosse’ in The Sleeping Beauty, ‘Evil Sea Witch’ in The Little Mermaid, ‘Stepsister’ in Cinderella, ‘Bride’ in Crimson Butterfl y, and the role affectionately referred to as ‘Doom’ in On the Move. A graduate of Regis University with an elementary education license, Kathryn is an experienced teacher who may be spotted subbing in classrooms around Boulder! Music Director & Conductors MICHAEL BUTTERMAN, Boulder Philharmonic Music DirectorMaking his mark as a model for today’s conductors, Michael Butterman is recognized for his commitment to creative artistry, innovative programming, and to audience and community engagement. He is in his eighth season as Music Director for both the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra and the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra, and is in his 14th season as Principal Conductor for Education and Outreach for the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the fi rst position of its kind in the United States. He is also the Resident Conductor of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, a post he has held since 2009.

As a guest conductor, Mr. Butterman made his debut with the Cleveland Orchestra in the spring of 2012, and was immediately reengaged for two concerts the following season. Other recent engagements include appearances with the Detroit Symphony, Houston Symphony, Colorado Symphony, Oregon Symphony, Kansas City Symphony, Hartford Symphony, San Antonio Symphony, Syracuse Symphony, New Mexico Symphony, California Symphony, Louisiana Philharmonic, Spokane Symphony, El Paso Symphony, Santa Fe Symphony, Mobile Symphony, Peoria Symphony, Winston-Salem Symphony, Pensacola Opera and Asheville Lyric Opera. Summer appearances include Tanglewood, the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival in Colorado and the Wintergreen Music Festival in Virginia. In the 13-14 season, he will make his debut with the Charleston Symphony.

RICHARD OLDBERG, Boulder Philharmonic Guest ConductorThe NutcrackerRichard Oldberg was born into a musical family. His grandfather, Arne Oldberg, was a teacher and composer. His aunt Hilda Edwards appeared extensively as a concert pianist. Oldberg attended Harvard, where he conducted the Harvard Opera Guild’s famous production of Strauss’ Die Fledermaus. Upon graduating summa cum laude from Northwestern University, he joined the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, where he spent over thirty years, working with many great conductors of our time, including Fritz Reiner, Sir George Solti, Zubin Mehta, James Levine, Leonard Bernstein and Daniel Barenboim. Oldberg currently lives in

Estes Park and was principal horn player for the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra.

TRAVIS JÜRGENS, Boulder Philharmonic Associate ConductorChristmas with the PhilTravis Jürgens, 2nd place winner of the American Prize in Orchestral Conducting (2011), is in his fourth season as Music Director of the Phil-harmonia of Greater Kansas City. Previously he served as the Associate Conductor of the Lamont Symphony Orchestra and Opera Theatre in Denver, where he received the Leon Guide Outstanding Conductor Award (2012). During his tenure with the Kansas City Philharmonia, Jürgens has dramatically raised the artistic level of the orchestra, helped to increase the audience base, and expanded the education programs. He also conducted many world premieres by emerging composers and orga-

nized a video shoot with ESPN for a 2011 Halloween Special that was aired on Monday Night Football. Jürgens has formed new collaborations with the Kansas City Children’s Chorus, public and private schools, and local choruses; he also fosters an ongoing partnership with the Kansas City Youth Ballet.
