Spring 2012

A Message from the Presldent

I have recently consented to ten one- hour sessions to have my history recorded from childhood to

the present It is very hard to remember dates and the sequence of events but it is easy to remember

mom dad brothers sisters Christmas traditions games we played houses we lived in school

dances boyfriends feelings and emotions I surround myself with photos and antique items to

remind me of my past I even had a red barn built in my back yard to remind me of my home state of

Wisconsin

A recent article in an AASLH magazine titled Do History Museums Still Need Objects made me

realize how important our museum Treasure Boxes are to the community The good news is that

Yes we need objects from our past now more than ever I often see delight and curiosity when

children first look through a stereoscope or try to figure out how a dial telephone works But I have

also visited many senior housing units where the elderly men and women some well into their 90s

some with alzheimers and many not wanting to be there at all I have watched them perk up when

they see old common gadgets appear from the Treasure Box and they know what they are and what

to do with them Eyes brighten minds spark as they start talking about churning butter or weighing

chicken eggs or using a hair crimper And they start talking to each other too one Seattle city

woman to one Kansas country man

It is only one hour of their day but I leave them with a message Instead of thinking about today or

even tomorrow think (and talk about) things you did when you were 9 or 10 years old when you were

innocent and spontaneous Go back there in your mind and enjoy the memories Life was good

then Memories from youth are easier to hang on to - I know because I am doing it

A Glimpse of Life In Early Bothell excerpts from an oral history of Carl Beckstrom II

recorded in July 1992

Carl II was born in 1908 in Bothell WA in a house built by his Grandfather on Cedar St and 103rd His

family (including 4 sisters) later moved to a house built by his father

Carl II was the grandson of Andrew and Augusta Beckstrom who journeyed to Bothell in a rowboat in

1883 along with two of their children Anna two years old and Carll two weeks old Their first child

died Andrew was a paper hanger and painter and Augusta with her family medical book in hand

became the areas nurse and doctor Andrew built a cabin in 1884 where the family lived unti l he could

build a house They eventually had thirteen more children

Andrews son Carll married Nellie Oates and they had five children Carl II and his four sisters

Carl went to Hillcrest school and in winter they would slide down the school hill Also the cars would

pull the children along on sleds He remembers the big snowstorm of 1916 His dad shoveled the

snow off the rooffor fear it might collapse In summer they would swim in the Slough fish and play in

the woods On Sunday afternoons everyone would go to the train depot to watch the train come in

Carls chores were to bring in the wood and light the stove and fireplace Like many people of that

era they bathed every Saturday night in a washtub With no refrigerator or icebox they buried a big

crock in the ground and covered it with wet sacks This kept the contents cool (continued on page 5) 4
