Cam Atkinson, BC (So., F, Greenwich, Conn.) Had three goals in the Frozen Four, including two in the NCAA title game and was named to the All-Tournament Team for his efforts.

Joe Whitney, BC (Jr, F, Reading, Mass.) Notched six points (1g,5a) in the Frozen Four and was named to the All-Tour-nament Team. Finished as the leading scorer in the NCAA Tournament with 10 points (3g,7a) in four games.

BOSTON COLLEGE: Boston College is now 4-6 in the national cham-pionship game, winning the NCAA title three times in the 10 last years. The Eagles last won the championship in 2008, as the team took down Notre Dame, 4-1, in Denver. This is the school’s third title under head coach Jerry York...Head coach Jerry York improved to 33-18-1 in 17 NCAA Tournaments, including a 28-8 record in 11 tournaments at BC. York’s 33 NCAA Tournament wins is the highest total in Division I history. With his fourth national championship, three with Boston College, one with Bowling Green, York now ranks third in NCAA history for champion-ships won. Only Michigan’s Vic Heyliger (1948-56, six championships) and Denver’s Murray Armstrong (1958-69, five championships) have more titles than York...Boston College junior goaltender John Muse is now 8-0 in NCAA Tournament competition. Muse was between the pipes for BC when the school captured its last NCAA championship in 2008. He has allowed just one goal in two national title game appearances...Boston College finishes the season with 29 victories, equaling the total number of wins achieved by the 1999-00, 2003-04 and 2006-07 teams. Those 29 wins place the 2009-10 squad in a tie for the third most wins in school history. The current record is held by the 1986-87 Eagles, a team that won 31 contests that season...With the Eagles margin of victory sitting at five goals, the 2010 championship game holds the largest goal differential since the 1994 title game, as Lake Superior State beat Boston University, 9-1...BC netminder John Muse becomes just the fourth goaltender in NCAA championship game his-tory to post a shutout. Adam Berkhoel of Denver was the most recent goalie to do so, as he blanked Maine, 1-0, in the 2004 title game. Tim Regan of Boston University earned a 4-0 shutout over Cornell in 1972 and Gerry Powers kept North Dakota off the board in a 4-0 victory during the 1968 championship game...Eagles freshman forward Chris Kreider becomes the first player since Denver’s Matt Carle to win the NCAA national championship and the IIHL World Junior championship in the same season. Carle accomplished the feat in 2004.

HOCKEY EAST IN THE FROZEN FOUR: Boston College owns a 35-20-0 record in NCAA Tournament play since joining Hockey East in 1984. They have won a league best three NCAA Titles (2001, 2008 and 2010). A Hockey East team has appeared in the NCAA Champion-ship Game in 13 of the last 14 seasons.

Commissioner’s Corner with Joe Bertagna Congratulations to Jerry York and the Eagles and their national championship. A commissioner rarely gets to be a fan and bring a rooting interest to a game. But when the games are in April and only one conference team is still playing, that opportunity presents itself. I am finishing my 13th year with Hockey East and in that time, we have had a presence in the NCAA title game 12 times, winning five of them. (In 1999, both finalists were from Hockey East.) Of the 13 teams who have participated in the season’s last game, seven have been from Boston College. So I thank the Eagles for those chances to experience a game like a fan. Jerry York an his veteran staff deserve a great deal of credit for these accomplishments. And yet, the second winningest coach in college hockey history has only been voted National Coach of the Year once, back in 1977 when he was at Clarkson. Frequently, the most successful coaches in our game are denied this honor, voters crediting the team success to a wealth of talented players. So Michigan State’s Ron Mason (924 career wins) won the award just once, same with Michigan’s Red Berenson. Jeff Sauer, who coached at Colorado College and Wisconsin, winning NCAA titles at the latter, was never his league’s Coach of the Year. For Jerry York, it isn’t about individual honors. It is about “team.” And that may be why a team with no All-American selections was able to win yet another national title.
