May 2020 Volume 1, Issue 1 Booth-Fickett k8 Math/Science News from the Nest K-5 FEATURED FALCON 1. Who are you and what do you do for our Falcons? I am a fourth grade teacher. I am also a wife, a mother and a grandmother. I love my job teaching Scholars! I give my heart and soul to this job for our Falcons. I love being in the classroom with my scholars as much as I love giving my children, grandchildren and fur-babies hugs and scratches! I spend a lot of my spare time taking classes to become a better educator and teacher. 2. Why did you become a teacher? As a child I always played schoolwith my siblings where I was ALWAYS the teacher! This is one of my fondest childhood memories. When I graduated from high school and was looking at what I would study in college, everyone told me NOT to become a teacher because they dont make much money. I listened unfortunately and got a Business Administration degree and later an Accounting degree. All I ever wanted to be however, was a teacher! Later in life, I got the opportunity to follow my dreams and become a teacher. I was a student teacher for a year and the first day I stepped foot into that classroom, my life truly start- ed! I was finally doing what I think I was put on this earth to do – teach! 3. What do you like most about teaching? My favorite thing about teaching is building relationships with the students. I know this sounds cliché, but its true! I love it when I can start joking with my students and they laugh with me. In what other job do you get drawings of yourself telling you that you are loved. I love it when past students let me know that Iam the reason they fell in love with reading. Teaching has fulfilled my life and if I were to leave this earth tomorrow, I would have no regrets because I finally became a teacher! 4. What were you like as an Elementary scholar? I was very, very quiet. I used to get check marks on my report cards because I was so quiet. I wasnt a good reader and math was even harder. I did have good handwriting though! 5. What was your favorite subject in school and why? I think my favorite subject in school was science because we got to do experiments. We only did about three experiments a year but my, how I looked forward to those lessons! 6. If you won the lottery, what would you do with the money? If I won the lottery, I would pay off my sons student loans! I would pay off my house and take a nice vacation to Europe and Australia. When I arrived home, I would sit down with a financial advisor and see what I could do with my money to help with the schools I have taught at. I would love to start a program that would replace the old schools in Tucson and build new ones with all the updates a school should have. 7. Where is your favorite place to vacation and why? My favorite place to visit is Sweden. When I was in high school I was an exchange student to Sweden. I have gone back twice since then and I would love to go back again sometime soon! 8. Where did you go to college? Right out of high school, I attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri where I got a degree in Business Administration. The second time I went to college, I attended Western Colorado State University in Gunnison, Colorado where I got an accounting degree. I later got my teaching license through this university as well. 9. What did you like best about college? I loved being away from home! At the end of my second year, I became a Resident Assistant which gave me my own room for the first time in my life. Having grown up with three sisters, I always had to share a room. I loved learning educationally as well as learning life lessons in college. Life lessons were easier to learn in college than in real life because I could always fall back on family for sup- port. I loved Saturday afternoon football games at Mizzou (the University of Missouri). I also loved all the friends I made in college from all over the United States! College was a really fun time! 10. WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE TO OUR 8TH GRADE CLASS? FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS! DONT LISTEN TO THOSE WHO SAY YOU CANT OR THOSE WHO TELL YOU, YOU WONT MAKE ANY MONEY DOING THAT! IF YOU LOVE WHAT YOU DO, YOU WONT WORK A DAY IN YOUR LIFE! Online Registration School Year 2020- 2021: Please com- plete your online registration form in ParentVue. 6-8 FEATURED FALCON

1. Who are you and what do you do for our Falcons? I am one of the 8th grade Social Studies Teacher at Booth-Fickett. 8th grade Social Studies focuses on developing student’s understanding of the democratic society we live in by providing needed foundations in government structure and functions. Later in the year we focus on the basics of economics and personal finance. 2. Why did you become a teacher? I became a teacher because I wanted to share my love of history and geography with students. Since I started as a teacher right out of college, I felt that teaching middle school was the best option since, I could still relate to their knowledge of the world but was old enough to be distinguished as an adult. 3. What do you like most about teaching? When I help a student strive for more than they felt they could. I believe that every student is capable with the right push or moti-vation. While it can be difficult to pinpoint for some kids, I feel there is always some-thing that I can be doing to ensure that they find success. 4. What were you like as a Middle School scholar? I considered myself to be quite a normal Middle School student, despite having a majority of GATE and Honors clas-ses. I was very dorky and hung out with people who were not apart of the “cool” crowd. I was also a huge teacher’s pet, but that’s probably due to the fact that I as raised by educators who always taught me to strive in school. 5. What was your favorite subject in school and why? I loved social studies/ history. Many of my favorite teachers taught this subject and made the experience memorable by being wacky, embarrassing, or plain interesting. It’s probably why I majored in both History and Geography in college! 6. If you won the lottery, what would you do with the money? Pay off some of my student loans. I’ve only got [a little bit] but the sooner its gone the better. 7. Where is your favorite place to vacation and why? I typically go to Ohio every summer. This is because my favorite aunt moved there when I graduated college and I like to visit her and explore the mid-west. 8. Where did you go to college? The University of Arizona, where I graduated with a double major in History and Geography within 3 years. 9. What did you like best about college? The thing I liked most was the classes. I spent most of my college years working a full-time job while also being a full-time student, so I made sure to always pick classes that I’d enjoy because what would be the point of paying for something I didn’t like! I got to learn all sorts of things that I would to incorporate in my curriculum one day! 10. What is one piece of advice you would give to our 8th grade class? Grades are important but, don’t let it be the only thing that you remember from high school! Make friends, explore different outlets, try a new sport or activ-ity, reinvent yourself, you never know how many amazing op-portunities can open up for you.
