Material Information

“Rilsan information”

Rilsan is a thermoplastic polyamide based coatingapplied on metal components by hot-dipping. It isapplied on the bodies, discs and levers of butterflyvalves, DN 32 through DN 600. It resists harshchemical environments. Salt spray tests in excess of2000 hours and immersion in salt water for 6 yearsprovided corrosion-free results. For sanitaryapplications Rilsan is inert to fungus growth, highlystain resistant and US FDA approved. Due to thelow coefficient of friction and high abrasionresistance the tests have shown that Rilsan-coatedobjects if deformed indicated no sign of peeling orexposure to bare metal. Rilsan-coated products arechemically resistant to many kinds of alkalis, acids,grease, oil, commercial solvents, LPG, natural gas,petroleum products, milk, sauce, fruit juices andweather conditions.

Surface hardness: Shore D 75

Impact resistance: Steel ball weighing 20N, fallingfrom height of 50 cm. No fracture of the coating andmetal not bared (coating thickness 0,3mm)

Abrasion resistance: At “Taber” abrasimeter (typeCS17, load 9,81 N) loss of weight after 1000 turns5-8 mg. (“excellent”) 30-40 kV/mm (generallyrequired satisfactory value: 18kV/mm, min)

Melting point: 184 -186° C

Inflammability:“Self extinguishing” acc. to ASTM D 635

Assembly and disassembly instructions

Assembly

1. Connect the body (1) of the valve to the clampfrom the bottom side

2. Mount the seat (2) according to the holes. Alignthe bigger hole with the hole on the top of theflange on the body.

3. Mount the o-ring (4) and bushing (5) to the body.4. Insert the stem (6) through the top flange. Do

not insert all the way through.5. Mount the disc (3) on the body.6. Mount the circlip(7) on the stem.7. Attach the stopper plate (8) and screw (9) to the

top flange.8. Tighten the notch plate (10) using bolts (12).9. Mount the lever (13) on the stem, while

positioning the notch plate (10).10.Tighten the bolts (12) and the toothed pin (14).11.The valve is ready for installation.

Disassembly

1. Connect the valve body (1) to the clamp fromthe bottom side.

2. If the valve is lever operated, loosen thetoothed pin (14) and remove the lever (13) fromthe valve.

3. Loosen the bolts (12) and remove the notchplate (10).

4. If any type of actuator is used; remove the bolts(12) and disconnect the unit.

5. Remove the screws (9) and stopper plate (8).6. Disconnect the valve body from the clamp to

remove the stem (6).7. Connect the body to the clamp from the square

side of the valve.8. Remove the stem (6) from the body.9. The valve should be secured to the clamp from

the bottom and the disc (3) must be removed.Remove the seat (2) from the body.

Removing the valve from the pipeline

1. Stop the flow of the fluid and discharge the fluidfrom the line.

2. Bring the valve to a 95% closed position.3. Loosen and remove all the bolts which prevent

removing the valve from the line.4. Remove the valve by opening the space

between the flanges5. Use a separator to remove the valve if jammed

due to pressure.

Installation instructions

Installing the valves in existing pipelines:

1. In order to make mounting easier open theflanges completely.

2. Disc must be in a 95% closed position.3. Centre the valve between the flanges and

tighten the bolts.4. Open the valve completely and remove the

flange separator.5. Tighten the bolts using the nuts by hand only.6. Bring the valve to full open position.7. Tighten the bolts until the flanges touch the

valve body.8. Test the valve by opening and closing several

times.

Installing the valve in a new pipeline:

1. Connect the valve with bolts between the twoflanges while the disc is in a 95% closedposition.

2. Weld the flange of the line only at two points.Remove the valve.

3. Loosen the bolts and remove the valve frombetween the two flanges.

4. Carefully weld the flange on the line and waitfor cooling. To avoid heat damage to the rubberseat never weld the flange while the valve isstill connected to the line.

5. Using welding gauge apparatus is advised forvalves with sizes over DN 200.

6. Repeat the above instructions for mounting thevalve on existing pipeline.

7. Using dismantling piece is advised for valveswith sizes over DN 200.

Additional installation information

Installing the valves near the curves (see diagram)shall cause turbulence and should be avoided.

Welded neck type flanges areadvised. Otherwisethe valves must be centred between the flanges.

Always install the valves further from the curveequally 3 to 5 times the diameter of the line. Theaxis of the stem should be parallel to the lineextended from the opposite side of the curve.

Surrounding space must be provided between theflanges to insert the valve. The disc must be at 95%closed position prior to installing the valve.

Using scrap pipes is not recommended. The pipesmust not be welded to each other at short intervals.The lines connected tot the two sides of the valvemust be on the same axis to prevent leakage.

- the disc must be completely open- line and stem axis must be centred- the bolts must be tigtened until the flanges

touch the valve body

If the stem must be installed parallel to the ground toaccommodate dense flowing materials, lower part ofthe disc should open in the same direction of theflow.

Technical data

Remark: The above table gives the recommended maximum torque values applied to the butterfly valves.They represent the sum of of the amounts of mechanical friction by opening and closing the valve in relationon the various pressure drops. These torques values apply to any type of application.

Cv – Values

Nominal valve diameter is determined by calculating the Cv* coefficient with the formula given below on thebasis of actual fluid operational conditions. Determine the valve size in the table belowso that the Cvcalculated by the formula is about 80% of the Cv value in the table.

Cv* gives the flow rate of water in U.S. gallons per minute passing through the valve, creating a pressuredrop of 1 psi at a temperature of +68° F. In metric units this coefficient is defined as the Kv which likewiserepresents the flow rate in m3/hr passing through the valve with a pressure drop of 1 bar at a temperature of20° C. The relation between Cv and Kv expressed in the above units is as follows: Cv = 1.16 * Kv.

Pressure drop-Nomograph

The nomograph can be used both for gases withvelocities exceeding 4,5 m/sec as well as for liquidsby plotting the flow rates(Q), valve size (mm-inch),angle of opening and the pressure drop of thebutterfly valvein relation to each other.

The economic advantages of the adjustment systemwith butterfly valves should be considered as goodadjustment can be obtained for disc opening anglesfrom 25° tot 70°.

Calculation example for water

(use of the nomograph)

Data:water specific gravity d = 1.0 kg/dm3

flow rate Q = 250 m3/hrbutterfly valve sizeDN200 (8”)

To determine:The pressure drop across the valve underconditions of maximum disc opening and angle ofopening 75°. Project horizontally from point Q = 250m3/hr untill meeting the valve line (Ø 8”),then projectvertically untill intersecting the line corresponding tomaximum opening (90°). Lastly project horizontallyon the axis referring to the pressure drop, where thisvalue is read

Calculation example for air

Data: Air specific gravity 3.48 kg/m3

flow rate Q = 750 m3/hrbutterfly valve size DN100 (4”)

To determine:The pressure drop across the valve underconditions of maximum opening (90°). Proceed asdescribed above for the liquid, to deduce that thepressure drop across the valve is 2.16 bar. Howeverthis value is referred to water. The relative pressuredrop is: 2.16 ∞ 3.48/1000 = 0.0075168 bar

General

To determine the pressure drop for any liquid,multiply the value obtained from the nomograph bythe density of the liquid (kg/m3) and divided by 1000.

Installation instructions and maintenance

Maintenance

No maintenance and/or periodic lubrication isrequired. The various component parts of the valvecan be inspected or removed quickly using normaltools. To do so, close the valve; then remove the tie-rods or bolts from the flanges and slip the valve offthe piping.

Disassembly and reassembly

First fuly open the valve. Remove the lever systemor operating mechanisme fitted on the valve. Thenscrew out plug (11) remove the seal (10). Lift out thetop stem (12) followed by the lower stem (3). Forcethe disc (12)out from the seat (13). Then seattogether with the stem o-rings (4). Inspect and/orreplace the parts where necessary, then reassembleall items in the reverse order to assembly.Reassembly is greatly helped by smearing smallamounts of silicone grease inside the valve bodyand on the two stems. Lastly make quite sure ofperfect alignment of the square end of the upperstem with the broaching on the disc. There is risk ofdamage if repeated use of force is made wheninserting the stems in the case of holes on the seatnot being properly aligned with those on the valvebody and disc.

Spare parts

If the butterfly is installed corrrectly, it can operatefor very long period without requiring inspection orspare parts. The only recommended spare parts forthe VTB butterfly valve are the rubber ones, the seaton the valve body (13) and the stem o-rings (4-5).

The butterfly valves are two – way which meansthey can be mounted with the flow on either side.The valves are designed for installation betweenDIN or ANSI flanges. They are seated betweenthese flanges without need for seals of any kind.They can be mounted in any position in the piping ifnecessary with the small and medium sized valves,the actuators can face downwards without alteratingthe interference between disc and seat. Beforemounting the valve between the flanges, it isadvisable to apply a film of silicone grease on theouter surfaces of the seat in contact with theflanges. This is to avoid seizing up with themounting flanges and risk of tearing or breakagewhen disassembling. After placing the valve withdisc half open (wafer type) between the flanges,proceed to center it between the latter. Next insertthe tie – rods which extend right along the outside ofthe valve body. Then thread the nuts on the tie –rods and tighten them uniformly In case of the lugtype valves, the bodies are fitted on the outside withlugs having tapped or through holes correspondingto the holes on the flanges, therefore installationwith bolts is quicker and easier. After assembly it isadvisable to open and close the valve several timesin order to make sure everything is okay. It is goodpractice not to install the valve close to elbowfittings or branches in the piping, especiallyupstream, in order not to impair the hydraulicbehaviour of the fluid or to cause needless stress onthe valve.

The flanges(better still if with neck or socket) shouldbe perfectly parallel with well machined surfaces;the inner and outer diameter should correspond tothose given in the table on page 13. If the flangesare not parallel or not well machined, they wouldcause abnormal stress on the tie – rods therebycausing poor tighting with the seat. Consequentlythe disc movements would cause rapid wear of theseat. Moreover correct inner and outer diameters ofthe flanges are very important for correct valveoperation. If the diameters are too small (see fig. a.)they could prevent valve movement. Too largediameters, instead (fig. B) would not allow sufficienttighting of the seat, therefore a non-perfect shut-offto the outside. The ideal solution is illustrated in fig.C where the flange inner diameter is equal to thevalve port.

Recommended tie-rod and bolt dimensions

Installation between DIN PN10 and PN16 flanges and ANSI 150 RF

The lug type butterfly valve have the advantage over the wafer type in that they can be installed at the endof the piping; just on one flange. Such function also offers the advantage in that there is no difficulty inremoving the piping on the downstream side when maintenance is required. For this application, we suggestusing a welding neck flange and/or socket welding. When the butterflyvalve is expressly used as a footvalve, be careful that the fluid pressure is not higher than 50% of the valve nominal pressure. Furthermorethis application should not be used for gas or air lines otherwise the valve should always be protected with ablind flange.

1.The 1-piece body guarantees a high stability with alow weight. The body is made with 4 centring earsfor easy mounting. Standard materials are ductileiron, carbon and stainless steel. Exotic materialsupon request. Face to face standards:Wafer Type DIN 3202/K2.

2.The butterfly disc is of the double excentric type.This design feature ensures a particularfavourable effect both in flow as in theopening/closing movement. In fact, the dischas two surfaces unequally different fromthe valve opening angle. This results in amoment of rotation reducing possibleturbulence within the valve.

3.The stem is accurately machined andbesides being guides by lubricated PTFEbushings, it guarantees perfect tight shut-off on the stuffing box. The stem is integralwith the disc through pinning. A plug withPTFE O-ring ensures tight shut-off on thelower stem.

General Features

4.The seal on the upper stem is of the adjustable typeand contains Chevron pack mode of PTFE on whicha stuffing box presses. When the stem seal requiresreplacement, you can do this without having toremove the valve from the pipeline.

5.The seat retaining ring merely serves to keep thevalve seat in place. A phonographic groove is

machined on the outside of the ringto ensure tight shut-off

between the valveand flangethrough a

common seal.

6.The seat consists of

an external PTFEsheath or casing from 1.6 to

2mm thick in direct contact with theprocess fluid, with internal core ofresilient material (Viton) which providesthe tight shut-off. Thanks to this solution,the seat can be replaced without havingto fully disassemble the valve.

Maintenance

VTB 400 butterfly valves do not require regular orperiodical maintenance.If any replacement of stem seals or seats is requiredplease proceed as follows:

Replacement of stem seals

1. The valve can remain in the pipeline.2. The lever, gear box or actuator are to be

removed.3. Remove bolts (10) and press ring (7)4. Remove PTFE Chevron rings (8)5. Check if stem (5) is not damaged at the sealing

surface.6. Clean carefully stem (5) and press ring (7).7. Replace carefuly PTFE Chevron rings (8).8. Replace press ring (7) and bolts (10) and gently

tighten the bolts untill leacking stops. DO NOTOVERTIGHTEN !!

Replacement of seat

1. Check if valve is in closed position.2. Remove valve from pipeline.3. Remove bolts (13) and ring (3).4. Open the valve.5. Remove seat (4).6. Clean disc (2), inside of valve and seat retainer.7. Replace seat (4) and assemble valve following

the above procedures in reversed order.

Selection of actuators

Required data:

- Torque figures of valve (incl. safety factor of atleast 25%)

Double acting actuators

Determine the required valve torque (this shouldinclude a safety factor of at least 25%; however youshould always consult valve manufacturer for exacttorque with applicable medium) as well as as theminimum available air supply. Refer to the pressure/torque table and select the minimum air supplycolumn applicable. Follow this column down until avalue not less than that required is found. Next, readacross to the left hand column and read the modelnumber to be ordered. e.g. Valve torque 80 Nm plus25% = 100 Nm, minimum operating pressure 5 barg.By reading down the 5 barg column a figure withoutgoing below 100 Nm is 119 Nm. The model numbertherefore shown in the left hand column is AP4D.

Single acting actuators

Determine the required valve torque (this shouldinclude at least 25% safety margin; however youshould always consult valve manufacturer for exacttorque with applicable medium), and the minimumoperating pressure available. Select from the“Spring stroke/end” table a value that is not lessthan the required valve torque (including safetymargin). Next refer to the pressure table and selectunder your minimum pressure and “END” torquecolumn a figure not less than that required(including safety margin). e.g. Valve torque 80 Nmplus 25% = 100 Nm, minimum operating pressure 6barg. Checking the “Spring Stroke/End” column thatthe nearest value is 102 Nm. By following the lineacross to the vertical 6 barg END torque column, afigure of 101.6 Nm is shown, therefore the suitableactuator is the AP4.5S6. In a normal valve shut-down situation the actuator would operate the valveto break out at less than 101.6 Nm and close at lessthan 102 Nm. If the “END” torque at operatingpressure is too low, continue down the column untillan acceptable value is found, compare with thecorresponding “Spring Stroke/End” column toensure that this also is adequate. This model maybe used.

Our standard Best-Torque actuators type AP, a rack and pinion design, are supplied in 2 different types,double acting (11 types) and single acting (10 types). In a rack and pinion type actuator the lineair kineticenergy is directly transformed into a “quarter turn” operation with a constant output torque over the fullstroke. Both double acting and spring return actuators have twin cylinders horizontally opposed andincorporate piston guides to ensure correct contact between rack and pinion, at any pressure. High qualitymaterials are employed throughout the construction and, the compact design is readily fitted to any type ofvalve. The actuators our suitable for both indoor as outdoor use.

Pressure applied to Port ‘A’ will cause the inner chambers to be pressurised, forcing the pistons outward tocompress the springs. The pinion is rotated anti-clockwise. Upon release of pressure through Port ‘A’ thesprings will exert pressure to close the pistons and rotate the pinion clockwise rapidly.This action will oftenbe used to close a 90° turn valve in shutdown mode.

Installation - Maintenance - Guarantee

Installation

Before the actuator is mounted on the valve, oneshould determine the direction of rotation as well asthe position you require to adjust by means ofadjustment screws. Since the “Best-torque”actuators have the ISO 5211 mounting pattern and asquare output drive, they can be mounted parallelas well as square to the piping. Also no differentactuator has to be used for “normally open” and“normally closed”. After mounting the actuator on thevalve, please check whether you have to adjust the“End-of-stroke” positon of the actuators, by meansof the adjustment screws in the end caps. When theactuator has “problems” opening and/or closing thevalve, the following should be checked:

- air supply- torque of the valve (this can go up because of

various reasons)- actuator shaft and valve shaft are alligned

properly, so that there is no friction between thetwo.

Maintenance

All actuators are, under “normal” circumstances,completely maintenance free.In case of extreme weather conditions, or extremeoperation-frequencies, or other unfavourablecircumstances, the following precautions should bemade:

- all air connections should be depressurized- all electrical components should be

disconnected.

Guarantee

Every component is individually and thoroughlytested prior to assembly. Each actuator will bestamped on completion of full tests being carriedout. Test certificates are available on request, attime of order placement, together with chemicalanalysis and mechanical tests of material used inthe construction. Customer or third party inspectionat our works before forwarding is possible at alltimes. Special tests and/or other requests, outsideour product range, at cost. Best-torque guaranteestheir equipment against faulty material, design andtesting, for a period of 18 months from shipment, or12 months from installation, whichever is theshortest. Best-torque reserves the right to interruptproduction and/or modify components and/orconstruction of their product, without obligation tosubstitute or modify materials previously supplied.

Disassembly

a. Remove end cap bolts (14) from end cap (3)b. Take off end caps (3)c. Turn pinion (4) clockwise (or anti-clockwise), so

that pistons (2) get out of the body (1)d. Remove circlip (10) from pinion (4)e. Remove the pinion (4) from the body simply by

finger pressing, from above.f. Replace following parts; if necessary:

On the pistons (2) - piston “O”-rings (21) 2 off- nylon guide rings (20) 2 off- piston guides (5) 2 off

On the end caps (3)- end cap “O” rings (19) 2 off- “O” rings stroke adjustment screws (15) 2 off

On the pinion (4)- “O” rings (7+ 9)- guide rings (6+8)

On the body- plug(12) 2 off

Assembly

Follow the above procedure in reverse steps.

VTB700 series Mini Monitor

The VTB 700 Series of industrial switchboxescomprise a small range of miniature modelsdesigned for direct mounting to pneumatic actuatorsconforming to VDE/VDI 3845. The IP 67 polyamidmoulded enclosure is sealed and quickly mounteddirectly to the actuator using the four M5 tappedholes forming part of the interface. Control circuittermination can be at either a 6-pin free socket, 3-pin free socket or flying lead and positiveadjustment of cam setting is provided from theexternal surface of the enclosure. Shaft positionindication is available in various colourcombinations. Control modes are identified bycoloured cam adjusting knobs. Adaptor kits areavailable to accomodate different actuator shaftheights and diameters.

Free flow 2-way pneumatic on-off valve

Free flow (45°) pneumatic On-Off valves are themost effective response to fluid interception.The contruction flexiblity of this valve allows astandard on-off use that can be normally closed,normally open or double effect.The steady materials and the specifically selectedgaskets guarantee an efficient operation even undercritical conditions of valve opening/closing in veryreduced times.This valve can reach and normally operate at190° C; it has reduced overall dimensions and awide range of connections in order to meet thespecific requirements of every single plant.The large number of applications of this valvemakes it an universal model and this is ensured byremarkable construction details such as:

- AISI 316 stainless steel body obtained by lostwax casting process up to DN40

- Pivoting plug to guarantee a perfect positioningon the seat and a consequent perfect seal.

- Plug gasket made of carbon graphite chargedTeflon for an excellent resistance to hightemperature.

- PTFE and Viton® stuffing box suitable for bothhigh and low temperatures, installed in a self-adjusting stable position to have minimumstress for a constant operation.

- Polished stem for a constant axial movement toensure efficient operation.

- AISI 304 servocontrol suitable for use inparticularly heavy external conditions.

3-Way pneumatic control valve

“M9-3’ control valves have been designed to meetthe most fluid adjustment requirements in a plant.

They can be employed as three-way mixing valves(two incoming fluids and only one exit) with fluidtending to open the plug, or as three-way deflectionvalves (one incoming fluid and two exits) with fluidtending to close the plug.

The control valve allows to modify the flow shiftingfrom very high flows to remarkably reduced flowswith an endless range of adjustments.

This aim has been achieved through the standarduse of technical-manufacturing devices such as:
