Yeehaw! On Friday, June 16, the annual BOMA Hawaii Golf Tournament came and went
without a hitch. The event sported a “paniolo” theme, and some members donned
cowboy hats and enjoyed paniolo-themed food and drinks. The tournament was held at
the Hawaii Prince Golf Club in Ewa Beach; event proceeds went to US Vets. Mahalo to
our golf event sponsor Premier Restoration and all sponsors. Great job to golf
committee chair Corinne Hiromoto and the entire BOMA Hawaii Golf Committee for
making the event a success!

Rail Update at Plaza Club The discussion on rail -
Hawaii’s largest public
works project - has been
at the forefront of local
news as of late. On May
10, BOMA Hawaii
members gathered at the
Plaza Club to receive an
update from the
Honolulu Authority for
Rapid Transportation
(HART). Bill Brennan,
Director of
Communications for
HART gave an update on
rail development and
how the project will
impact downtown
Honolulu, and answered
questions about the
project. Previously,
Brennan served as press
secretary for Mayor Mufi
Hanneman and worked
for KHON2 and other
media outlets in Chicago.
Bill Brennan is HART’s Director of Communications.

BOMA Hawaii’s Lunch & Learn series gives members the opportunity to be educated on innovative ways to take good care of the buildings they own and/or manage. On May 17, members learned about avoiding premature roof replacement and extending the life of building roofs. Joshua Akaka of CRW (Commercial Roofing & Waterproofing Hawaii, Inc.) talked to Lunch & Learn attendees about CRW Direct, an innovative roof management program that iden-tifies roof deficiencies before they become a major repair or replacement issue. CRW vice president Larry Young was also available to respond to members’ questions about their
building roofs.

Fresh Water Initiative seminar conducted by One World One Water and the Hawaii Community Foundation. At the seminar, she highlighted the common disconnect between building owners, tenants, engineers and statewide water conservation goals. According to BOMA (international) and federal agency data, three of the primary ways that commercial buildings can effectively reduce water consumption is through landscaping, fixtures/infrastructure and cooling systems.
Also at the One World One Water seminar, Craig Lekven from Brown & Caldwell debunked myths associated with water conservation and helped make the economic/business case for reuse and conservation. Elson Gushiken, an agricultural industry speaker, highlighted 2.3-million-gallon-a-day
BOMA Hawaii recently kicked off a series of Fresh Water Initiative organizing meetings, co-chaired by Dricka Thobois and Sandra Bollozos-Fraticelli, and in collaboration with the Oahu Economic Development Board (OEDB). OEDB is the fiscal sponsor for BOMA Hawaii's grant from the Hawaii Community Foundation to promote water conservation and reuse in commercial buildings. The grant was a “first” for BOMA Hawaii.
The grant will be used to support educational programming at a Sustainability Conference in April 2018 and a public expo at Tamarind Square is being planned. The Committee is also exploring potential Board of Water Supply tours of the Halawa aquifer. On September 14, BOMA Hawaii BAE Melissa Pavlicek spoke about planning efforts at a "reuse" focused water
reuse of "R-1" recycled water used for agriculture irrigation by the Kunia Water Association. Gushiken noted that "all" water is essentially reused, since it is "recycled" via rain and other natural processes.

Would you know what to do if you were
placed in an active shooter situation? On
September 13, BOMA Hawaii members
attended the “Code Black: Active Shooter
Awareness Presentations, Tradeshow &
Networking” event. Guest speaker and
professional stuntman Colin Fong spoke
briefly on related topics. HPD officers
Stephanie Virardi and Troy Yamada from
the District 6 Community Policing Team
spoke on previous situations that involved
active shooters, and the “Avoid, Deny,
Defend” method - the most recent civilian
response training for active shooter events
(http://www.avoiddenydefend.org/).
Members also had the chance to visit vari-
ous vendors at the tradeshow after the
presentations.
