Brock Elliott Interventions

The Brock Elliott team does an incredible job meeting the needs of ALL students. In addition to the

many programs Brock Elliot provides throughout the day, dedicated staff run interventions

before/after school.

“These programs are in full swing!” exclaimed teacher, Julie Thomas. “Read 180, Platoons, ELD

instruction, Differentiated Digital programs, as well as AVID and Support Electives are all interventions

built into our students’ instructional program during their school day to support their learning. In

addition, due to our amazing and highly dedicated staff and community support, we are able to offer

our students many before/after school intervention programs. We currently have 147 students

participating in before and/or after school interventions for Moving into English, Rosetta Stone, Digital

Support using Classworks, Quill, Xtramath, AVID Tutorial in ELA and Math, and GECAC

Tutoring. Enrollment is still open with more intervention opportunities for specific grade level support

coming soon. We are very proud of our school’s extensive Intervention program which provides a

pathway for ALL OUR CHAMPION STUDENTS to achieve academic success!”

Here is a list of the interventions happening this year. This list grows as student needs are identified

through data analysis.

6,000 more students by 2020?(Manteca Bulletin) Dennis Wyatt [email protected] 209-249-3519 October 1, 2016

Conditions exist that could increase Manteca Unified enrollment by 25 percent to top 30,000 students by 2020.

Manteca Unified Superintendent Jason Messer said just a matter of a month ago the narrative the district was working on was the anticipated tidal wave of new students from housing developments wouldn’t hit for another three years or so. The game plan was to prepare for 200 to 300 additional students at max next school year.

However a flurry of signs started popping up in the past few months. Manteca developers have started accelerating home building plans. Existing neighborhoods in Manteca and Lathrop experienced significant upswings in families with school-age children buying or renting existing homes. Toss in other developments such as Great Valley charter school opting to move their campus from Manteca to Salida and suddenly the future is coming sooner than expected.

Now it is possible the number of additional students next school you could climb between 1,000 and 1,600 or the rough equivalent of two typical Manteca Unified elementary schools. Manteca Unified currently has 23,900 students

“Dealing with growth is going to be the No. 1 priority for the district,” Messer said. “It presents more challenges than just housing students.”

To help bring together a wide a wide variety of housing-related statistics from new home starts to the effective student yield from the resale of existing homes, Messer is asking the Manteca Unified board when they meet Tuesday to discuss and give direction to conduct demographic studies for planning and growth within the district. The board meets at 7 p.m. at the district office, 2271 W. Louise Ave.

Manteca Unified does have some experience with dealing with a major sustained student growth surge to look at. Over six years from 2000 to 2006 Manteca Unified added over 6,000 students to surpass the 20,000 mark. The district added 488 students in 1998-1999. Then the next school year enrollment gain surged by 1,666 students followed by a string of years that saw annual gains of 1,414, 1,563, 1,576, and 1,066 students.

The dynamics this time around are different.

When the last wave hit growth was taking place in Weston Ranch, Manteca, and Lathrop. There was also plenty of college students working toward teaching careers.

“New school space requires more than just facilities,” Messer said. “We need teachers, textbooks, devices, (furnishings), equipment, and support staff.”

This time around California is dealing with a looming acute teaching shortage created by the Great Rescission when major cutbacks hit schools up and down the state forcing teacher layoffs. Not only did most teachers who lost their jobs change careers but college students entering teacher career paths dropped substantially. Expert said the shortage of potential teachers on college career paths is as much as 75 percent below projected needs in the coming years due to retirements, and growth.

Page 8: Board Highlights October 7, 2016 - MUSDpublic.sharepoint.musd.net/Superintendent Office...Jul 16, 2010  · Manteca and Lathrop are part of a region that more and more Bay Area families

Page 8 of 19 Superintendent’s Off ice, Community Outreach

Messer indicated that poses significant challenges if growth accelerates as it looks like it will for the next school year.

A number of schools are at maximum capacity at various grade levels. Weston Ranch campuses are full as are Lathrop schools. That takes away one pressure relief the district had last time of spilling Lathrop growth temporarily for several years by busing students to Weston Ranch campuses.

While Weston Ranch is stable, changing demographics may mean existing homes when they’re sold are generating more students than the homes previously yield. It is a trend that is already happening in established neighborhoods around Woodward School.

Messer said the so-called “yield factor” the number of school-age children a typical house has may be outdated for reasons ranging from younger families to multiple families living in the same house to grandparents raising grandchildren.

At the same time growth is continuing in Lathrop while home building has taken a sharp upturn south of the 120 Bypass. That means everything will be on the table to address students housing needs.

The list includes among other things:

ubuilding additional classrooms at existing elementary campuses using developer fees and — where possible — Mello Roos taxes.

ubuilding new elementary campuses.

uramping up enrollment at Manteca, Sierra, East Union and Lathrop high schools.

utweaking elementary attendance boundaries.

uyear-round school at select campuses.

ubusing students out of neighborhood school attendance areas.

Messer said developers have stepped up and are working with the district to address part of the facilities funding needs. He also noted a stronger working relationship has been established between the school, district and the City of Manteca.

And while Measure M projects are being designed so additional classrooms could be added at virtually every elementary campus with relative ease based on layout, Messer stressed none of the bond money will be spent on new classroom capacity.

Messer said community facilities are just a part of what the district needs to address.

Manteca and Lathrop are part of a region that more and more Bay Area families are looking at to buy and rent due to sky high prices and housing shortages exacerbated by a lack of developable land. The Northern San Joaquin Valley is the lowest priced housing relief area. The others are south of San Jose, the Sacramento area and the North Bay.

Porter Wilder is on a mission.

He wants to be a firefighter.

The high school junior’s background points to someone who is driven. He’s a CrossFit disciple and competitor. He’s trained as a high school wrestler. His passions include BMX and photography. He’s as meticulous about his appearance as he is controlling his diabetes and eating the right combination of protein and other building blocks to gain strength.

You’d assume he would be on target with his education.

Wilder is today but he wasn’t not too long ago. He was struggling in school. His teachers weren’t able to get him to connect.

What changed? Wilder enrolled in be.tech. It is the Manteca Unified charter school that combines education choices and career pathways with a healthy dose of the soft skills — promptness, ability to problem solve, self-motivation, teamwork, and such — that employers from the likes of Mt. Mike’s Pizza, Tesla, Yellow Freight, and Oracle to Teichert Construction yearn for in job applicants.

On Tuesday, Ward was among be.tech students making their quarterly presentation to a community panel recapping their academic and career development progress, citizenship and attendance, personal goals, and learning gained from participating in community events and community services during the previous nine weeks.

Page 10: Board Highlights October 7, 2016 - MUSDpublic.sharepoint.musd.net/Superintendent Office...Jul 16, 2010  · Manteca and Lathrop are part of a region that more and more Bay Area families

Page 10 of 19 Superintendent’s Off ice, Community Outreach

There was the traditional printed portfolio as well as the 21st century Power Point presentation controlled from his school-issued tablet.

Wilder told the panel he started doing better in core classes such as math, English, and history after switching to be.tech.

That doesn’t surprise Diane Medeiros who oversees be.tech, independent study and the Manteca Adult School.

The principal notes struggling students often need to find a purprose, or direction if you will.

That may surprise some who believe the goal of kindergarten through 12th grade education is to prepare students for college so the purpose of high school to them is clear. But in a world that Manteca Unified mirrors where only 20 percent of high school graduates go on to complete four years of college, it is easy to see how students like Porter Wilder might find themselves adrift.

“A little bit of success is what it takes,” Medeiros said. “Success begets success.”

In Wilder’s case it was delving into the be.tech first responders academy course work.

It didn’t take too long for him to realize the connection to math and other core subjects and his chosen field.

What Wilder and other be.tech students are learning goes far beyond exploring careers and grasping academic subjects.

Once a week all students partake in a class centered around professional development that runs the gamut from preparing a resume and how to handle an interview to the proper way to tie a necktie and the absolute importance of promptness and dependability.

During his presentation, Wilder touched on his personal development. He zeroed in on one problem area that he is planning to work on — tardies. He’s racked up five of them in nine weeks.

Two panel members re-enforce the dangers of not addressing issues that lead to him being tardy. It’s pointed out that now it’s being late for a class but as a firefighter it could be a matter of someone’s life. Another notes how a pattern of being tardy could cost him a job someday.

Wilder gets it. And the community panel that includes a firefighter has just re-enforced what teachers have been working to get him to understand.

The presentation by Wilder — dressed for success complete with a tie — goes smooth with a fair amount of eye contact.

“I’ll do better,” Wilder said at one point when it comes to the next nine weeks after reaching the goals he set for himself and then met in the first quarter when it came to academic performance.

At another “Student Exposition” — as the panel presentations are called — freshman Rafael Cano is standing before his fellow students and community members.

It is then you realize that the panel presentation are a clever — and extremely effective — replacement of old school classes of public speaking. A freshman even 10 years ago wouldn’t have had to spend as much time preparing a presentation to talk in front of a class, let alone strangers.

Page 11: Board Highlights October 7, 2016 - MUSDpublic.sharepoint.musd.net/Superintendent Office...Jul 16, 2010  · Manteca and Lathrop are part of a region that more and more Bay Area families

Page 11 of 19 Superintendent’s Off ice, Community Outreach

A culinary student, Cano shares lessons he learned from preparing eggs benedict, homemade Caesar salad dressing, and pecan cinnamon snails. You quickly realize it isn’t just about opening more and more windows to his dream of one day owning his own cafe but he’s picking up “people skills” as well as working on sharpening math and English skills to get there — two areas he readily admits he needs to work more at.

Courses at be.tech help underscore the connection by touching on personal finances as does his discussions with instructors on what it takes to run a café — the cost of food, labor, rent, equipment, and other nuances of being in business for yourself.

His eagerness to learn is underscored by arriving early each day on his own time so he can prepare for the portion of his school day that involves learning by working in the be.tech café.

Medeiros noted core subjects at be.tech are handled in tradional classroom settings, independent study, and even a hybrid of the two. The faculty strives to find the right combo that works so students will step up to the next level.

The end goal is the same as any other high school. The big difference is be.tech’s path to success is not a one-size-first-all approach that tends to have diminishing returns when students may not be plugged into academics because they don’t see the direct connection to their future.

“Home of the Spartans”

Board Meeting – September 27, 2016

Good evening Superintendent Messer and respected members of the Manteca Unified School District Board of

Education. To continue the 2016-2017 school year Lathrop High School and its organizations have prepared

and executed many activities to have a great year!

Most recently the LHS Friday Night Live club took an advisor and seven students to the annual Youth Traffic

Safety Summit in Anaheim California. The summit consisted of several conferences and workshops allowing

students to learn and experience new ways to promote safe and healthy habits in the community. These

efficient and effective methods are now being shared and utilized by not only Friday Night Live but also other

clubs on campus such as interact and other community outreach organizations.

On September 17th Lathrop Highs Interact club, led by AJ Oscona, had dozens students volunteer to make

sandwiches for the homeless in the local community. Students woke up early in the morning to shop for and

make sandwiches to provide to the homeless community throughout Lathrop and Manteca.

LHS Leadership Organized the first tailgate of the year on Friday, September 2nd verses Hilmar High. The

tailgate included sales local food trucks from within the community and clubs on campus such as Ube, class of

2020 and the class of 2017. Families and students from both Lathrop and Hilmar enjoyed performances from

the LHS Band and Drum Line, free face painting, and music while getting excited for the game.

Leadership has also been busy preparing for Homecoming the week of October 3rd through the 7th. The Theme

is "Clash of the Gods" and will continue on the tradition of every fourth year Homecoming being a Spartan

themed celebration. Activities throughout the week will include an extended lunch carnival, Powderpuff football

and cheer performances, spirit days, Rally, class floats and the crowning of our King and Queen, Duke and

Duchess for 2016.

This years Seniors have also been spending this past month on focusing on ordering Senior shirts to hand out to

each member of the class of 2017. The free shirts will be handed out the week of Homecoming and will be worn

the final day of Home coming. The Seniors have also been looking into several options for their yearly gift as

well as getting ideas approved for a Senior spirit week at the end of the 2017 school year.

Thank you for your time, and don’t forget to “Dream in Black and Gold!”

Board Report September 2016

Good evening Board President Deborah Romero, Superintendent Jason

Messer, and members of the Board and public. My name is Daisy Perez and I am

the ASB Vice-President for East Union High School.

This month has been one of East Union’s most exciting yet busiest months

concluding that it is our 50th year anniversary. September 19th through the 23rd was

our homecoming week. Many destined goals were accomplished and major

successes were made. Clubs, staff, and committees put their best effort and

worked diligently while planning celebrations for the 50th anniversary including

homecoming and a parade.

To begin, organization was the key to such a successful event. Our activity’s

director, Mrs. Cano and our Leadership class made sure all information concerning

Friday’s events was spread out to the entire student body. Reminders were sent out

through Remind 101 and various posts to increase participation. In addition we

made several posts on social media to let alumni know of our events. All staff was

given custom made polos to wear on Friday.

In preparation for Friday, the Leadership class and clubs all worked on their

floats for the parade. Participation was evident from clubs such as FFA, The

Gamer’s Club, MEChA, etc. The parade started at 12:30 and consisted of about

Page 25: Board Highlights October 7, 2016 - MUSDpublic.sharepoint.musd.net/Superintendent Office...Jul 16, 2010  · Manteca and Lathrop are part of a region that more and more Bay Area families

fifteen floats including a float of each of East Union’s decades from when the

school opened to now. Each decade float was decorated with trends from that

specific year and cruised with music from the era. Alumni were glad to represent

the floats in which they were on.

In addition, leadership had created a flier that was handed out to the parade

route participants in which we asked them to get involved and help create spirit on

their front lawns. We had a few houses participate and we will be awarding those

community members with a year pass for their family as well as season passes to

their choice of sporting event.

The marching band and cheer’s performances while marching were widely

enjoyed by all the viewers. Some clubs such as AVID and Thespians marched

their way through the parade as well. Through small behind the scenes chaos, the

parade ran smoothly and enhanced everyone’s spirit for the game at 7p.m.

A great appreciation for the food services was given by the student body as

BBQ hot dogs and hamburgers were served during lunch. Music was given by a

DJ and many line danced to the beat of the music. A rally was held after lunch

announcing the king and prince winners for homecoming. Congratulating all the

winners, the rally also entertained everyone with tug-of-war challenges among the

classes, football players, and coaches.

Page 26: Board Highlights October 7, 2016 - MUSDpublic.sharepoint.musd.net/Superintendent Office...Jul 16, 2010  · Manteca and Lathrop are part of a region that more and more Bay Area families

Since our homecoming theme was Lancers Fight to the Top of Reality TV

Shows, each class decorated their floats to their theme. Freshmen’s theme was Are

You Smarter Than a 5th Grader, sophomore’s theme was American Ninja Warrior,

Junior’s theme was The Bachelor, and Senior’s theme was Survivor. Seniors won

first place float which made their hard work worth it.

Before the game, tailgating was held and provided activities such as face

painting and food sales. Students showed huge support and stood in the red sea

with their most spirited East Union gear. Many alumni came to the game and had

a great time under the Friday night lights enjoying a victory against Lathrop High

School. We had a big task planning the 50th anniversary homecoming events, and

we are very pleased with all participants and alumni who came out to help us

celebrate this historic event. We can proudly say things ran very smoothly and

have been hearing nothing but great things from our community members about

our events.

Thank you for your attention as East Union will continue to make history

and imprint wonderful memories on the student body.

Homecoming is just around the corner and students are getting excited to get involved. Our theme this year is Buffs Battle It Out: Freshmen: Hippies vs. Preps, Sophomores: Moms vs. Dads, Juniors: City vs. Country, and Seniors: Bikers vs. Surfers.

The Night Rally is one of our most exciting events. All classes have a dance-off and the homecoming King and Prince are crowned on 9/28. Students work throughout the month prior rehearsing and preparing for the dance off.

Homecoming game on Friday 9/30 vs. Weston Ranch. The Homecoming Princess and Queen will be crowned during half time.

Honor the Code is now in full force at Manteca High. UNITE is the main focus for the month of October and pink bracelets are being used to spread awareness for breast cancer.

Link Crew held Academy Day for all freshmen on 9/16 where freshmen were pulled-out of one class period to interact positively with each other and Link Crew in the gym. They were given important school information, played teambuilding games, and were taught more about the expected MHS culture.

The College Prep Club held a Community Service Fair on 9/14 where over 100 students attended and got information/applications for many community service opportunities.

Sierra High School Board Report

October 4, 2016

Good Evening,

Members of the board, Superintendent Messer, Dr. Burke, and Mrs. DeLeon. Thank you for

allowing us to highlight our school community. Sierra High School truly is a place “where

everybody knows your name and the sky is the limit!” Here are some of the students, programs,

and activities that contribute to the positive culture and climate at Sierra High School:

Academics

Success 101: We are in the first full year of 9th grade implementation and we are already seeing some great

results! Our goal is to reduce the freshman D/F rate, ineligibility percentage, and raise the overall GPA.

Professional Learning Communities: Teachers continue to work hard in their Professional Learning

Communities in core and literacy teams to look at and share best teaching practices to enhance the curriculum.

Our mission is to develop responsible citizens who are critical thinkers and innovators who have the ability to

communicate clearly and effectively in the modern world.

Lobo Gold: Our Lobo Gold Academic Honor Rally will be held on Friday November, 4th beginning at 10:15am.

Activities

5K Fun Run: The 3rd annual Faustina Rosas/Sierra High School 5K Fun Run around the community was held on

Saturday, August 27th. There were approximately 70 participants who ran in the race. Many alumni,

administration, and current athletes ran and were awarded medals if they placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd in their age category.

The participants had an awesome time!

Blood Drive: The Sierra High School Blood Drive was a huge success with over 70 donors making a difference

and saving lives! On September 20th, Sierra High students and staff donated blood to the Delta Blood Bank. The

event was located in our small gym from 7:30 am until 2:00 pm. Our leadership students had shifts and were

Page 29: Board Highlights October 7, 2016 - MUSDpublic.sharepoint.musd.net/Superintendent Office...Jul 16, 2010  · Manteca and Lathrop are part of a region that more and more Bay Area families

present at the blood drive to help facilitate the registration tables as well as check on students or staff members

that might have felt sick after donating blood.

Homecoming Theme/ Dress up Days: This school year the theme for homecoming is “Sierra Takes a Trip Down

the Vegas Strip.” Dress up days will include Hard Rock (band t-shirts), Circus Circus (animal print/circus

theme), Planet Hollywood (famous actor or actress), Mandalay Bay (beach wear), and Spiritwear Day! Students

and staff celebrated throughout the week with lunchtime activities that included games, a car show, and a pep

rally. The Wolfpack turned out in force for the homecoming game against East Union.

Royalty: We have taken in class nominations and are currently in the process of narrowing down to the 5 king

and queen candidates and the 3 prince and princess candidates. Crowns sashes and decoration for the coronation

have already been ordered.

Powderpuff: There is no doubt that this year’s powderpuff game will be incredible. Our 2016 Powderpuff game

was held on Wednesday, September 28th. The freshmen and sophomore girls played in the JV game and were

followed by the junior and senior ladies. The SHS cheerleaders and band get the crowd pumped during both

games. The participation and turnout was been incredible with over 150 participants this year!

Wolfpack: The Wolfpack has started off with a bang this year. Our first three home football games had a great

turn out and we had a tremendous amount of student involvement. This year we are emphasizing to the freshman

class how being involved in Wolfpack as well as other school activities will make their high school experience

much more exciting. We had many freshman come out to paint their faces and cheer on our team. Also to keep

our students pumped up and cheering we have incorporated many activities into our cheering section. From

confetti cannons, to free shirts being launched into the crowd, there is never a dull moment when you are sitting in

Sierra High Wolfpack.

Clubs

AG/FFA: We had 11 students attend the MUSD FFA Bowling Event at Manteca Bowl. We will have 18

students (3 teams) competing in the Delta-Cal Sectional Opening and Closing Contest on Wednesday, October

28th, in Calaveras.

Band/Choir: The Sierra High Band has participated in a full slate of events the first two months of school! In

addition to performing at all home football and some volleyball matches, the band attended a UC Berkeley

football game on Saturday, October 1st to play at halftime with other high school bands. They are also

conducting several fundraisers to help pay for the cost of 100 new uniforms, which is about $40,000. They have

raised $35,000 thus far and are looking forward to replacing 20 year-old uniforms.

Campus Beautification: Nearly 50 students and staff showed up at 8am on Saturday, September 24th, to help

clean the parking lot planters, lay down new decorative bark, and plant 10 new trees! We will hold another “Love

Sierra Day” in April.

Page 30: Board Highlights October 7, 2016 - MUSDpublic.sharepoint.musd.net/Superintendent Office...Jul 16, 2010  · Manteca and Lathrop are part of a region that more and more Bay Area families

Athletics

Dinner Dance: The Sierra Athletic Boosters held their annual Athletic Boosters Dinner Dance on Saturday,

October 1st. Nearly 200 people were in attendance to enjoy all-you-can-eat ribs/chicken, dancing, a raffle, and

silent auction items.

Fall Sports: Congratulations to Megan Oblin, SHS Girls’ Cross Country, for being named the Stockton Record

and Manteca Bulletin Athlete of the Week! Sports such as Football, Girls’ Volleyball, Cross Country, Girls’ Golf,

and Boys’ Soccer are in mid-season form as the Valley Oak League title chase begins! Our cross-country, soccer,

and football teams are all competing for league titles and the golf and volleyball teams have been very

competitive.

Character Spotlight

Dominic Burrows – Found a wallet laying in the quad area while he was here completing community

service as part of our campus beautification day. Dominic turned in a wallet that contained cash, credit

cards, and a driver’s license! He is to be commended for his honesty and outstanding citizenship by

doing the right thing! Way to go Dominic!
