Why Should Schools in Lewisham Reduce their Carbon Footprints?

The world is in serious danger of global warming. As you may already know polar ice-caps are melting and the polar region has become a serious concern.

The UK is one of the biggest producers of CO2 in the world

That’s why we think Lewisham should lead the way for the new “carbon neutral” schools

METHOD OF ELECTRICITYMETHOD OF ELECTRICITYWIND TURBINE:WIND TURBINE: Mean wind speed in London is 5mphMean wind speed in London is 5mph

Our school will have 1 turbine as it Our school will have 1 turbine as it will limit costs will limit costs

Electricity generated by wind Electricity generated by wind turbines won’t dirty the air we turbines won’t dirty the air we breathe or emit pollutant, that breathe or emit pollutant, that means less smog, less acid rain and means less smog, less acid rain and fewer greenhouse gas emissionsfewer greenhouse gas emissions. .

Page 21: Blue Team Presentation
Page 22: Blue Team Presentation

For a wind turbine of a 26ft blade radius we calculated how much energy it would produce at 5mph

School would need 20500 kwh per month power output from the turbine is 500 kwh per month

500 ÷ 20500 x 100 = 2.4% = Amount saved

SCHOOL PAYS PER YEAR ( NATIONAL GRID ) = £20000

SAVED ( THROUGH TURBINE ) = £500 PER YEAR

COST OF TURBINE = £20000

YEARS TO RECOUP MONEY = 40 YEARS

40 years is a long time to recoup money but we feel that the environment is more important
