Department of Nursing Chair’s Summary and Highlights of 2017 Sheila Q. Hartung

The Department of Nursing (DON) recognizes education for professional nursing as an integral part of higher education. The educational process for nursing integrates concepts drawn from the liberal arts and sciences into the baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral programs to assist students in acquiring the knowledge, skills, values, and professional behaviors essential to beginning or advanced practitioners of professional nursing. Nursing focuses on the person as individuals, families, communities, and populations in a caring and holistic manner. Nursing is a process of simultaneous, purposeful actions that are theory-based, contextual, and grounded in critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and the scientific method. The faculty believe that it is essential to educate nurses who view the profession as a scientific discipline possessing a belief system reflecting ethical values, practice according to professional standards, demonstrate concern for humankind, and commit to life-long learning, self-reflection, and ongoing self-awareness development.

Spring 2017 As the new calendar year of 2017 began, the department brought on two new faculty members: one faculty member, Elizabeth Hammond-Ritschard, will assist in the sophomore and senior level in the medical-surgical and leadership area; and one faculty member, Mary-Lee Helbing, will assist in the senior level medical-surgical nursing course. Elizabeth (Beth) comes to us from Drexel University and taught with us as an adjunct faculty member at Bloomsburg for several semesters before accepting a full-time tenure track teaching position. Mary-Lee Helbing joins us as a full-time tenure track faculty member and has had many years of experience as our Nursing Simulated Learning Lab Director. Additionally, we brought on Gail Jasman to become the new Director of the Simulated Learning Lab (SLL). Gail comes to us from Geisinger and is very experienced with the education and skill development of nurses. With the new faculty members and staff joining us in the Department of Nursing in the Spring 2017 that brings our total number of faculty to 28 full time permanent faculty members and one full-time staff member located in the SLL.

Notable DON happenings in the spring 2017 included the induction of student members into Sigma Theta Tau, International Honor Society of Nursing, Theta Zeta Chapter; the Harrisburg, PA student trip; Pinning ceremony; Graduation events; and retirements of two nursing faculty members.

Induction into Sigma Theta Tau, nursing’s international honor society and the local Bloomsburg University chapter, Theta Zeta, occurred on March 26, 2017 at the Frosty Valley Country Club in Danville. The ceremony inducted 23 undergraduates, 15 graduate students, and four community nurse leaders. Criteria for induction include demonstration of academic excellence and integrity.

On May 1, senior students traveled to Harrisburg, PA to participate in a culminating experience in legislative advocacy. This trip included 74 senior students and six faculty. The group spent the morning meeting with the President and Government Affairs staff from the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association (PSNA) and discussing the nurses’ role in advocacy and policy at the state level. Senior students toured the Capitol building

and met with Senator Gordner, one of the leading state legislators. The day was exhausting but powerful as students had the opportunity to discuss their role in political advocacy.

On the morning of Saturday, May 6, in the annual Pinning Ceremony, 99 senior undergraduate nursing students walked across the stage in Carver Hall

and received their nursing pins signifying the transition from student to graduate nurse. The nursing pin and accompanying ceremony was a meaningful event for graduating seniors, faculty and administrators, family and friends. There was a candle- or lamp-lighting portion of the ceremony, which commemorated Florence Nightingale’s history of helping wounded soldiers at night by candlelight. During the symbolic celebration, graduating students and nurses recited a modern version of the Nightingale Pledge that both honored the original pledge and gave substance to a vision of nursing that represents the present and future of the profession.

On May 12 and 13, 2017 two significant events occurred. On Friday, May 12, 14 graduate students celebrated their Graduate Commencement and entered advanced clinical practice with a Master’s degree in Nursing (MSN) and prepared to function as an Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner or as a Nurse Anesthetist. The graduates are now eligible to sit for national certification examinations.

In the afternoon of May 13, 90 students received their baccalaureate degrees in nursing (BSN) at Undergraduate Commencement and entered the nursing profession. The Department of Nursing congratulates students graduating in the spring 2017 semester as they led the nation and the state in pass rates for the national nursing licensure exam (NCLEX-RN). For the spring 2017, the Department of Nursing had a 99% first-time pass rate for BSN graduates compared to 86.94% nationwide and 91.1% in Pennsylvania.

On May 17, 2017, the Department faculty and staff held a retirement celebration for two of our finest faculty. Dr. Margie Eckroth-Bucher and Professor MaryAnn Cegielsky both retired at the end of the spring semester. Margie Eckroth-Bucher was a faculty member at Bloomsburg University in the Department of Nursing since 1993 and for those 24 years was an expert educator, researcher, and consultant. She taught nurses and nursing students as an educator at Danville State Hospital and as a Professor at Bloomsburg. She taught across multiple levels in the nursing program including general education courses to university students, specifically in courses such as Alcohol Use and Abuse or Drug Use and Abuse in Society. Her primary teaching responsibility over the span of the 24 years was in the Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing course at

the senior year. She was a prolific writer of numerous publications and a consultant or reviewer of textbooks, publications, and grants. She served the department as the Assistant Chairperson for 5 + years and as the Chairperson of the department’s Curriculum Committee and the Student Admission, Progression and Retention Committee.

MaryAnn Cegielsky was a faculty member at Bloomsburg University in the Department of Nursing since 1986 and for those 31 years served as a guiding hand in our program, in our program outcomes, and in curriculum. She taught scores of nurses and nursing students as an educator at Pottsville Hospital School of Nursing and as an Assistant Professor at Bloomsburg. She taught across all levels in the program including general education courses to university students in courses such as Personal Health or Alcohol Use and Abuse. However, her real passion was teaching at the junior and senior years in the Adult Health nursing courses and specifically in the oncology content areas in the curriculum. She served the department with distinction in so many ways that it was difficult to describe her impact on our students and our department. The department will miss these superb faculty members but wish them health and wellness as they enjoy their retirement.

Fall 2017 The fall semester 2017 began with the Department’s annual Opening Day Assembly on Monday, August 28 in Kehr Union Ballroom. Over 450 students, faculty and staff were joined by Dr. Aronstam, Dean of the College of Science and Technology, to welcome the audience to the new academic year and to highlight the past

year’s accomplishments and upcoming excitements on the horizon. Introductions to faculty and staff and each other were the main objective of the afternoon.

The autumn weather brought us to the Fourth Annual White Coat Ceremony on Sunday, September 17, 2017 in Haas Center for the Arts, Mitrani Hall. A total of 107 sophomore students pledged their commitment to quality patient care in front of a packed auditorium of other nursing students, faculty, administrators, and families. White Coat Ceremonies are designed to instill a commitment to providing compassionate care among future health professionals. The program was developed to promote humanistic, patient-centered care among nursing students as they enter their first clinical experiences. The

most important element of the ceremony is the oath that students take in front of family members, faculty, school leaders, and peers. The oath acknowledges their primary role as care givers. The Ceremony and the oath serve as a rite of passage and are further commemorated by lapel pins that the Arnold P. Gold Foundation supplies to students. The pins contain an inscription denoting humanism and serves as a visual reminder

to students that in order to deliver the best care to their patients, compassion and empathy must be the hallmark of their clinical practice. Securing a commitment to providing patient-centered care at the beginning of their professional formation helps to raise the quality of care to all patients, families, and communities.

A White Coat Ceremony or similar rite of passage takes place at 97% of accredited schools of medicine in the United States and Canada and at a growing number of Nursing Schools. The Department of Nursing at Bloomsburg University was one of 100 schools nationwide to adopt the White Coat Ceremony in 2014. We were one of only three schools in the state of Pennsylvania that year and continue the annual event because it is so important to us and to students in a caring profession.

Sigma Theta Tau International Theta Zeta

The mission of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) is advancing world health and celebrating nursing excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service. From its inception, STTI has recognized the value of scholarship and excellence in nursing practice. In 1936, STTI became the first U.S. organization to fund nursing research. Today, STTI supports these values through its numerous professional development products and services that focus on the core areas of education, leadership, career development, evidence-based nursing, research, and scholarship. These products and services advance the learning and professional development of members and all nurses who strive to improve the health of the world’s people.

Theta Zeta’s chapter encompasses members from Bloomsburg University and surrounding prestigious community members. Theta Zeta annually support the Walk to End Alzheimer’s Disease held September in Bloomsburg, PA and the Cystic Fibrosis walk held in May in Bloomsburg, PA. Service activities that accentuate our community are done throughout the year.

A strong community presence with strategic planning toward educational and evidence based practice is noted in programming. Speakers are invited to share research and latest evidence to the Chapter in educational programs designed to enhance scholarship. All members of the community are invited to attend.

Annually, scholars from the student body and community are inducted into the organization. The over arching goal is to advance learning through evidence and research to build quality leaders in the field of nursing.

Aging Special Interest Group (A.S.I.G.)

ASIG is an inter-professional student run organization at Bloomsburg University. ASIG is open to students and faculty across all majors, who are interested in older adults & healthy aging. Our goal is to address the needs of older adults in the community through service and education.

Service is an important part of the organization. In Fall 2017, ASIG held a dine to donate at Quaker Steak and Lube for the Alzheimer’s Association and then participated in the Alzheimer’s Walk. In October, ASIG members held pumpkin painting at Maria Joseph Nazareth Center to celebrate Halloween with older adults. Older adults in the Nazareth Center have Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. In October ASIG held three computer classes at Maria Joseph Meadows’ Community Center. Maria Joseph is an independent living community for older adults who want to live life to the fullest. It is a neighborhood of one story houses that provide a perfect retirement setting. At computer class adults learn how to create a word document, how to open the internet browser, navigate google.com, make an Gmail account and were taught how to send emails in three different sessions. At the end of the three sessions, participants were given a certificate of completion.

At the end of the semester ASIG also sang Christmas carols at Maria Joseph Meadows Christmas party. The carols were a huge hit and great way to spread joy among the residents. Furthermore, ASIG also sang carols at Bloomsburg Towers an apartment community for folks 62 years-old and older. Other events ASIG participated in included the activities fair and the homecoming parade.

Nurses’ Christian Fellowship (NCF)

Nurses Christian Fellowship, or NCF, is a branch of Intervarsity Christian Fellowship. Through Bible studies, NCF seeks to help nursing students learn what it means to follow Jesus in nursing. Although the focus is on applying God's word to nursing practice, all students are welcome regardless of their major or faith background. There are also several events throughout each semester. In fall 2017, there was an off-campus bonfire, an ice cream trip to Big Chill, a Thanksgiving dinner at Commons, and a Christmas cookie-decorating event. Some cookies were given to Bloomsburg students in the dorms, and others were donated to the Ronald McDonald House and the House of Care. NCF seeks to serve nursing students by helping them learn and grow in their faith, as well as by building a supportive student community. V

Student Nurses

Association (SNA)

The Student Nurses Association (SNA) is a student run organization primarily involving the nursing students of Bloomsburg University. The purpose of SNA is to assist students in preparing for their professional roles and responsibilities in nursing while giving back to the

community and university through service activities. One of the goals of SNA is to strengthen the bonds between nursing students in all levels of the nursing program in order to develop a sense of community, support and belonging.

Service is an important part of the organization. During the fall 2017 semester, SNA members volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House in Danville by making meals for families in need. The Ronald McDonald House is a place where families can stay for little to no cost while their children are undergoing treatment in the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital of Geisinger. SNA also gives back to the community by

participating in the annual university Relay for Life event, where money is raised for The American Cancer Society. SNA annually serves the Bloomsburg community by participating in the annual “Big Event” service day in Bloomsburg, donating money to the Bloomsburg Women’s Center, raising money during the annual Alzheimer’s walk, conducting blood pressure screenings in the community and running canned food drives and clothing drives. Two of SNA’s largest service activities during the fall 2017 semester were a canned food drive during the holiday season, which supported the Bloomsburg Food Cupboard, and a clothing drive called “Bundle Up” in which clothing goes to Agape in Bloomsburg.

Student Nurses Association of Pennsylvania (SNAP) and National Student Nurses Association (NSNA) are SNA’s larger chapters. SNA students had opportunities this year to participate in events from these parent organizations including activities like meeting job recruiters. SNA members were also invited to go to conventions through NSNA and SNAP, these conventions are great for networking and integrating students into the nursing profession. In addition to the conferences, these organizations also provide service opportunities for SNA. In the spring, SNAP included SNA members to donate toys for the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital.

SNA is also responsible for planning the Nursing Department’s annual pinning ceremony for the senior class as a way to honor their achievements during their time at Bloomsburg University.

SNA also helps with supporting the academic achievement of its nursing students. Every year SNA helps pay for the cost of trip to the “Nurse Bowl” in which schools compete in answering NCLEX style questions. Congratulations to Bloomsburg’s 2017 Nurse Bowl Team for earning 1st place at the competition!

In addition to these highlighted service and academic events of 2017, SNA also has social opportunities for students to further connect. Last year, SNA started a “buddy program” where freshmen nursing students were paired with upperclassmen for mentorship opportunities and to learn about what it is like to be a Bloomsburg student. SNA also hosted a banquet at the end of the academic year to celebrate the hard work that had been put forth by all students and faculty.

New York University College of Nursing Occupational and Environmental Health Nursing: External Advisory Board In June 2017, a former colleague from the University Of Pennsylvania Department Of Nursing, invited me to participate on the External Advisory Board for the New York University Occupational and Environmental Health Nursing Program. This program is funded by NIOSH, and a stipulation of this funding is to have external experts in the field to advise on industry needs and provide feedback in order to meet the program goals. The first meeting of this advisory board is scheduled for Fall 2017. Alliance for Nurses for Healthy Environments I was invited to represent AAOHN in Washington DC for a meeting at the White House on May 25, 2016. The session was sponsored by the Alliance for Nurses for Healthy Environments, and was entitled "White House Climate & Nurses Roundtable". The White House Council of Environmental Quality invited medical stakeholders in the environmental health arena to join White House senior leadership for a day of discussion on health impacts of climate change and the response of the Administration and the Nursing Community. My participation in this meeting allowed me to instill AAOHN's viewpoints and positions on climate control, and support the work that still needs to be done on a global platform to address this international issue. This powerful networking day and the ability to walk the halls of the White House and contribute to a discussion on a worldwide issue was certainly a momentous professional milestone for me.
