Message from the MinisterCindy Wesley, OFS
Thank you Lord for all the blessings we have received from you. Most of all, thank you for all our dear family and friends.
The loss of someone dear to us is always an occasion to put into perspec-tive how blest we are. It is an occasion to reflect on our relationships and make sure we are not taking the people we love for granted. One of my favorite songs is “The Living Years” by Mike and the Mechanics, which includes this line:
“I just wish I could have told him in the living years.”
Not a week goes by that I don’t receive news of the death of family, friends and fellow Franciscans. Just recently we received word of the sudden and unex-pected death of a wonderful Franciscan, Ed Shirley. Many of you met Ed at the NAFRA chapter in San Juan Bautista last October. His death is again an occasion for me to realize that none of us knows when our life journeys will carry us through that portal named “death,” into our eternal life, separating us temporarily from those we love here. As Franciscans we are called to be Christ to all we meet; to make sure that all those around feel God’s love in their lives by knowing us. I urge all of you to take time this week to tell your family, friends, and fellow Franciscans how much they mean to you; how much you love them.
As I finalize this message we are experiencing rage and anger around the world toward the United States because of a thoughtless and cruel video against Islam. I have decided to dedicate an extra 15 minutes a day to pray for peace and healing in the world. I urge all the Secular Franciscans in our Region to adapt this practice. It takes a while for something to become a habit, but if we persevere we can do it and hopefully make a difference in the negative energy that is now so prevalent. 15 minutes of prayer a day for peace!

More than 500 Franciscans converged on Chicago July 3 - 8 for the U.S. Secular Franciscan Order's Quinquennial Con-gress. Held every five years to bring Secular Franciscans, fri-ars and sisters together as a family from across the U.S., the Quinquennial this year focused on gaining insight into the call by St. Francis of Assisi to live the Gospel in one's every-day life. The keynote speaker was Franciscan Sister Ilia De-lio, OSF.

Ed Shirley, OFS(Dec. 25, 1953 - Aug 15, 2012)
Secular Franciscans across the United States were shocked in August by the sad news that Ed Shirley, a charismatic Secular Franciscan leader, unexpectedly died on August 15th while recovering from shoulder surgery. Ed, a professor at St. Edward’s University in Austin Texas, was a gifted speaker that was said to have “charmed students with wit, humor, his banjo playing and his gift for telling a story.” He used these same gifts at OFS events around the country. Within the Order he was very an excellent educator, theologian and interfaith advocate. He authored the chapter in the FUN manual on “Theology of the Catholic Church.” Over the years we have been blessed to have had him share his wis-dom and knowledge as a National Secular Franciscan leader.
Deepening Our Relationship With GodThe Transforming Power of Prayer
A summary of Ed Shirley’s talk at the Quinquennial presented on July 5th
Ed Shirley’s afternoon talk zeroed in on the transforming power of prayer, with some theology tossed in, such as Bonaventure's look at the Trinity.
He began the session by referring to Sister Ilia and saying he would throw down the gauntlet were she present. "Sure, she had a great presentation, but can she do that and play the harmonica, too?" He whipped out the instrument to a roar of laughter and then began playing "Ode to Joy." After a couple of bars, the audience began to sing along.
He noted that a Franciscan view of the Trinity (with the Father as the source, the Son expressing the Father, and the Holy Spirit as the love uniting them) sees a dynamic, inter-penetrating relationship that wends it way through and is imprinted on all of creation. It's a realization that led Francis to declare the sun as his brother and the moon, his sister.
Ed Shirley "danced" around a "fancy word" -- Perichoresis -- which refers to the indwelling and inter-penetrating relationship between the Father and the Son. He called it the divine do-si-do of the Father and the Son, with the Spirit being the Dance.
Like the Trinity, there are three phases of Franciscan life, all mentioned in the Rule, that have a dynamic relationship, a flowing back and forth, he said. They are prayer and contemplation, transformation of consciousness/vision, and apostolic action. Prayer leads to transformation, where we begin to see the world as pregnant with Christ, which leads to apostolic ac-tion and in turn leads more deeply into a transforming vi-sion. And seeing the world "shining with the Trinity and in-carnating Christ, we are struck with awe and wonder." This in turn, leads to deeper prayer.
This deepening prayer and grander vision should lead us to be "transforming lives, just as certainly as bread and wine are transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ."
It's a little like the attitude and vision of three stone carvers. When each was asked what he was doing, one said 'carving a stone'. The second said he was putting food on the table, and the third said he was building a grand cathedral. What is the difference? Their vision, their mindfulness.

While attending the Quinquennial, Cindy and I had an opportunity to visit the vendors that were dis-playing a variety of Franciscan related books, music, artwork, etc. One of the displays that caught my attention were the books and printed materials that were available through Tau Publishing. Tau Publishing was established in 2002 and today, have over 125 titles published and they work with more than 50 authors. Their published titles include a mix of new works and previously out of print books. Currently they are releasing 4-6 new books per month.
The following two books are used together as an exploration of St. Bonaventure’s classic masterpiece. They can be used by individuals or by an ongoing formation study group.

St. Bonaventure’s The Soul’s Journey into God RetreatApril 5 - 13, 2013 Old Mission Santa Barbara
André Cirino, OFM and Josef Raischl, OFS, have designed an eight day retreat in which they lead the partici-pants through the prologue and seven chapters of Bonaventure’s JOURNEY by means of a series of prayerful experiences, explanations, and liturgies. The retreat opens with an audio-visual presentation on the life of Bonaventure in order to provide a context for the study of his work. Each day is a balance of instruction on the text, periods for reading and personal prayer, community participation in Eucharistic liturgy and morning and evening prayer. The liturgical and para-liturgical prayer is especially designed by the presenters to disclose Bonaventure’s profound themes through contemporary experiences.

Meet Our Brother Bonaventure
Reflections on The Journey into God
by Mary Esther Stewart, OFSItem # 978-1-61956-009-3Price: $10.95
The purpose of this book is to provide the reader with a guide for exploring Journey into God, by St. Bonaventure. Each chapter corre-sponds to a section of St. Bonaventure’s book with reflections by the author, followed by sug-gestions for reflection, activities, or meditation and providing space for the reader to write a personal response.Drawing from a deep personal understanding of the Franciscan tradition, this text makes St. Bonaventure as brother and friend a compelling, relevant and accessible source of wisdom for the present day… a valuable and highly useful introduction to one of the most profound spiritual writers and thinkers of any era.”

Journey into GodItinerarium Mentis in
Deumby St. Bonaventure
Translated by Josef Raischl OFS & André Cirino OFM
Item # 978-1-61956-001-6Price: $13.95
This book is a new translation of St. Bonaventure’s classic masterpiece describing one’s search for spiri-tual growth.
Josef Raischl and André Cirino’s translation of the Journey into God is a gift. It puts St. Bonaventure’s Itinerarium Mentis in Deum in the hands of lay people who might oth-erwise find the text complicated and difficult to comprehend. It reads like poetry, yet does not dilute the meaning; rather, it enhances it. This is a valuable tool for ongoing formation for Secular Franciscans everywhere.
