MISSIONARIES OF MERCY

Paul’s back! A er last week’s “violent abuse,” opponents organized a lynch mob that beat Paul nearly to death. But call Paul the “energizing evangelist,” transforming deadly cruelty into life-giving zeal. Paul’s past courage should inspire our commitment; Revela on’s future “new heaven, new earth” should inspire our op mism. But Revela on’s present assurance, “Behold, God’s dwelling is with the human race,” should challenge us to become “missionaries of mercy.” Because Pope Francis declared that the Church’s credibility is completely dependent on our showing uncondi onal mercy. Mercy, said Francis, makes the Church, the world, and everyone young again, reawakened to life’s noblest virtues. Fi ngly, in today’s Gospel Jesus reinforces that theme: “This is how all will know you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — Paul and Barnabas reported how God had opened the door of faith to the Gen les (Acts 14:21-27). Psalm — I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God (Psalm 145). Second Reading — God’s dwelling is with the human race (Revela on 21:1-5a). Gospel — This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another (John 13:31-35).

PEACE & UNITY WEEKEND BRINGS POLICE AND COMMUNITY TOGETHER

The New Bern Police Department and nearby two dozen churches from across the city, have partnered to host the third annual Peace & Unity Weekend. The event will take place on Saturday and Sunday, June 1st & 2nd. This is an opportunity for churches, synagogues, temples and other faith-based organiza ons to spread the message of peace and unity throughout our community.

Chief Toussaint B. Summers, Jr., and other police department management staff, met with faith-based leaders from 30 churches earlier this month to discuss strategies for crea ng safer communi es. Everyone agreed to highlight a message of peace and unity to their congrega ons and faith groups and that communica ng that message across neighborhoods and communi es was a great place to start.

As part of Peace & Unity Weekend, faith leaders are asked to include a meaningful message of community peace and harmony in their sermons, as well as implement a visible sign of their solidarity, such as a message on the church marquee or having congregants wear royal blue shirts that weekend.

“We hope the en re faith based community will par cipate,” said Chief Summers. “We’re fortunate to have strong faith leaders across New Bern who want to take an ac ve role in building safer and more caring communi es.”

“Our churches and religious leaders are the cri cal links between police and the ci zens we protect and serve,” said Chief Summers. “They help connect communi es through church services, volunteerism, sports leagues, recrea onal ac vi es, youth programs, counseling resources and more. “We hope that through these ac vi es, lives will be touched and the message of peace and unity will spread across New Bern.”

Christus Vivit, Pope Francis’s Apostolic Exhorta on

on Young People, the Faith, and Voca onal Discernment WASHINGTON-The release of Pope Francis's apostolic exhorta on April 2, 2019 is “a wonderful summons to the Church to more vigorously invest in youth and young adults, especially those on the peripheries and those disconnected from the Church,” said the President and commi ee chairmen of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB). Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo of Galveston-Houston and President of the USCCB, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R, of Newark, chairman of the Commi ee on Clergy, Consecrated Life and Voca ons, and Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., of Philadelphia, chairman of the USCCB Commi ee on Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth, have issued the following joint statement on the release of Christus Vivit. Full statement follows: “The Church of the United States welcomes this teaching from Pope Francis as the fruit of the synodal journey in which we walked with and listened to young people. This exhorta on is a wonderful summons to the whole Church to more vigorously invest in youth and young adults, especially those on the peripheries and those who are disconnected from the Church. We encourage all Catholic leaders to read and study this exhorta on and the per nent documents of the Synod. They provide for us a framework from which we can build upon in our dioceses, parishes, and communi es. Now more than ever, we must turn our a en on to our young people and engage them as ‘protagonists’ of the Church’s mission. Their insights can help us grow as a Church and guide us as we all learn to become be er missionary disciples in an intercultural and intergenera onal context. We look forward to what comes next, in collabora on with Catholic ministry leaders already working alongside young people. We look forward to the journey ahead, and pray with St. John Paul II, a patron of young people whose passing we remember April 2, for the Church’s ongoing mission to all genera ons. The post-synodal apostolic exhorta on, Christus Vivit, is a significant milestone of the synodal process begun by Pope Francis in 2016. A er two years of consulta on by episcopal conferences, movements, and Catholic organiza ons, along with a worldwide online survey and a Pre-Synod Mee ng with young adults in March 2018, the General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops met in October 2018 on the theme ‘Young People, the Faith, and Voca onal Discernment.’ Bishops, clergy, religious, and lay people, including a number of young people, together with Pope Francis, addressed the challenges facing younger genera ons today and ways in which the Church can best respond. Now the work of the Holy Spirit, manifest in the sessions of the Synod, will bear fruit in the dioceses of the United States.”

----------------------------- The Saint Paul Pastoral Council has been researching ways to improve our Faith Forma on efforts for our children, youth and all adults. Innova ons in these areas, especially for our high schoolers, are on the drawing board. Christus Vivit, the Holy Father’s Apostolic Exhorta on, will be a great help to us and to all the church to priori ze youth ministry as we work to improve all faith forma on in the parish. Please pray for our success in these efforts!
