her position here and I know that when everyone has the opportunity to meet her, you will make her feel welcomed and valued as a member of our school community.

Belinda Leeson - Assistant Principal

Next week, students will celebrate their achievements with a PBL Assembly and rewards breakfast on Thursday morning. On Friday, our students will be participating in the Orange Picking Ceremony. However, this will look very different to every other year as parents and community members cannot be with their child/ren. We have been working with Gwydir Shire Council so that we could still have a meaningful event. Our staff and students paying their respects to our fallen whilst still enjoying the juicy oranges is a tradition that we won’t let pass, no matter what the circumstances.Bingara Central School and Bingara Preschool will be in attendance at the ceremony beginning at 11am. Community members and visitors will be sectioned off from our school as social distancing is required to support the health and wellbeing of all school staff. Students are asked to wear full school uniform (not the sports uniform) for this event. We will be a part of the 15 minute ceremony before our students are directed to pick from designated class/stage trees. The trees will all be colour coded on the day to assist student groups with their picking. Following this, we will have a range of

competitions back at school for the students that they can enter themselves and their oranges into. These include:• Biggest orange (measured diameter)• Smallest orange (measured diameter)• Weirdest shaped orange • Heaviest orange (measured using scales)• Brightest colour• Biggest orange grin (Infants, Primary and Secondary prize)• Juggling competition • Tagged orange hidden in the trees

(Class/Stage canteen voucher)We will also have orange cutting and juicing stations set up so that students and staff can sit and enjoy their oranges in whatever form they like. We will finish the day with a FREE sausage sizzle and variety of organised sports. This will be a great finish to the school term for all.Unfortunately these holidays, the Share Our Space program will not be occurring due to COVID-19 restrictions. The Department of Education hopes that this program will be able to get up and running again in the September/October holidays. This is such a great program for our school to be involved in and we cannot wait until we are able to offer this opportunity again to our students and community members. In the lead up to next term, parents are reminded that school returns for Bingara Central School students on Monday 20 July with the pupil free day being moved to Friday 24 July. This change has been made to support professional development opportunities for all our staff members.

Food Technology

FOOD FOR SPECIFIC NEEDS

In Week 7, the Food Technology students started a new unit, “Food for specific needs”. Many individuals consume foods that must meet their specific needs. These needs exist for a variety of reasons including age, health, lifestyle choices, cultural influences or logistical circumstances. Students who study Food Technology should be aware of these circumstances, especially if they hope to find employment in hospitality. So far, we have explored food intolerance and allergies. Students have enjoyed cooking gluten and dairy free muffins as a sweet snack. Last Friday we cooked Moroccan chicken and roast vegetable salad (pictured), a meal that is suitable for individuals who must adhere to avoiding certain types of foods for health reasons. This was also a colourful combination of ingredients and we had better than average satisfaction rates this time! Keep up the good cooking.

CLASS OF THE WEEK Year 5Over the semester, Year 5 have been working hard to maintain routine and establish quality work habits. In writing they have been working on both imaginative and informative texts. Imaginative writing includes a picture and a story starter and informative texts include collecting and understanding both facts and opinions related to specific topics. Does your child have

COLD AND FLU LIKE SYMPTOMS?This week we have had students experiencing cold and flu like symptoms. If your child is sick, please keep them at home until they are well enough to return. Siblings of students who are sick are fine to attend school as long as they are not showing any signs of illness. Unfortunately, we are entering into the period of time where the usual flu season begins to hit. As this year is significantly different to any other year, we need to do our best to keep everyone healthy.

Attention all bike and scooter riders

WEAR A HELMET OR DO NOT RIDE

It has been brought to our attention that a number of students have been riding their bicycles and scooters to school without a helmet. Please make sure that if your child is going to ride to school they wear a helmet. In NSW, failure to wear a helmet can incur a $344 on the spot fine.NO

NO BIRTHDAY CAKES AT SCHOOL

Living in the current COVID-19 environment has meant that we all have made adjustments to our day to day lives and practices. At school, we have made changes in the way we interact and limit contact to help stop the spread of Coronavirus. While we would normally allow parents to bring birthday cakes, cupcakes and donuts to class to celebrate a child’s birthday, we cannot currently allow this to occur under the Department of Education health and safety regulations for students and staff. While we understand this may be upsetting, we must all work together to limit opportunities for the virus to spread. We suggest that instead of a cake you send in a sealed packet of lollies to share with the class.

What is the best thing about BCS and/or Bingara? My memory of Bingara Central School is that it was very family orientated. Everybody was treated equal and it was a very happy, encouraging place to be.What is your favourite BCS memory and/or tradition? One of my favourite memories would have to be the netball tournaments. It was always such an exciting time with all our preparation and training, then the early starts on a Saturday morning. Orange Picking also was a very exciting time for the whole school with the community coming together to get the most oranges and the tastiest ones. But most of all my best memory of Bingara Central School would have to be the swimming carnival. My passion back then was swimming and still is. I represented Bingara Central School at state level four times.Where are you now? Occupation?I’m currently living in Warialda, not far from home, with my husband and three children. I am a Family Day Care Educator. What are some of your achievements? I finished my School Certificate in Bingara. In those days it only went to Year 10. Then I completed my schooling at Warialda High School, where I finished Year 12. While I was completing this, I did a part-time traineeship with the Bingara Preschool and completed my Certificate III in Children’s Services. I then furthered my career and moved to Brisbane, where I worked in a long day care centre for 12 months. After that I returned home and studied my Diploma in Children’s Services. I’m now enrolling into a Child and Youth Counselling Certificate.

What is an interesting fact about you? I received the Bingara Young Australian of the Year back when I was just 16. Another interesting fact is that I’ve been caring/babysitting for children since I was the young age of 12.I have travelled to Vanuatu on a beautiful ten day cruise. I would love to see Australia one day and see the beautiful natural wonders that this country has to offer.Do you have any words of wisdom for our students? You can achieve anything that you put your mind to, you don’t have to be the smartest or the most talented child, you just need to believe in yourself. Your goals are endless.

maximising people potential in the workplace

Via the Empowering our Communities program, the Hunter New England and Central Coast Primary Health Network has arranged for qualified mental health professionals to attend drought affected regional, rural and remote areas of New South Wales to support people and families who are doing it tough. The aim is to provide a free service that helps people access support, understand mental health and take care of themselves and others.

These sessions are conducted by qualified mental health professionals from a national organisation called IPAR. IPAR helps people to be safe and well – whether this is providing services that prevent psychological or physical injury or illness, or helping people to recover if they are injured. IPAR has operated in Western New South Wales for over 10 years.
