BIMPE VII marks the exhibition’s 12th year running and brings with it new venues and adventures. Opening once more at the Federation Gallery, Vancouver, B.C., the show’s new time slot has increased benets to our team, artists and audience.
Having more time to produce the exhibition catalogue and properly promote the exhibition is of benet to those who travel to the opening to view and collect art and to artists who travel to be a part of the experience. ese groups often overlap and have resulted in a strong community of art goers, supporters and makers.
is year we have proudly added UBC Okanagan to BIMPE’s roster of tour stops. Our thanks to Briar Craig for organizing this and we hope that BIMPE can be of inspirational service to the creative community of Kelowna and the student body of UBC.
About the Show
As a miniature print exhibition, BIMPE’s only requirement is that a print be no larger than 4 by 6 inches, or 24 inches square. at being said, BIMPE is open to all types of print media, including digital or otherwise unconventional means of “printmaking”.
For BIMPE VII, 291 artists entered our exhibition, representing 31 countries. e curated show is comprised of 200 of these artists, totalling a whopping 395 prints. e work is as varied as the places they travel from, and we are ever grateful to our artists for creating this exhibition.
BIMPE is organized by SCWOP (e Society for Contemporary Works on Paper), a non - prot society created to support the exposure of art on paper.
New Leaf Creative Solutions (formerly New Leaf Editions), the incubator of BIMPE, is a collaborative printmaking workshop, specializing in etching, relief printing and almost anything that can be dreamt up.
Peter Braune of New Leaf and Debra Yelva from Dundarave Print Workshop conceived the idea of BIMPE in 2000. During Peter’s absence in 2000 to 2002, the exhibition was nurtured and carried forward by the remarkable eorts of Katie Dey, Marijke Nap and Debra Yelva.

is catalogue is dedicated in loving memory of
Marijke Nap (1965 - 2011)
Marijke Nap was integral to the Vancouver
Printmaking community in many ways.
She studied Printmaking at Capilano
University, and worked as a printmaking
technician there and at Emily Carr Univer-
sity. She was a Master Printer at New Leaf
Editions where I first met her, a member of
Dundarave Print Workshop, and latterly, a
printmaking technician at the University
of British Columbia. She was also an active
printmaker in her own art practice, and al-
ways challenging the limits of printmaking
both technically and conceptually.
Marijke was involved with BIMPE right
from the get-go. New Leaf Edition's Peter
Braune dreamt up an international minia-
ture print exhibition and then left suddenly
for a job in New York, leaving Marijke and
I not only to run his print shop, but to
organize the show with Debra Yelva. The
first BIMPE was a small affair and a huge
learning curve. Two years later we organized
BIMPE II, gaining a ton of experience and
laughing a lot along the way. I remember
us picking up Yoko Kawazoe, the first place
prize winner for BIMPE II, at the airport in
Marijke's tiny Toyota Tercel and hoping she
didn't think we were too much of a mickey
mouse operation.
Incredibly generous with her time and skill,
Marijke continued to volunteer her ad-
ministrative abilities to the organization of
BIMPE over the years - which of course just
kept on growing. She was calm and capable,
and could always be relied upon to find
the humour in any situation. She is sorely
missed.

SAM DAVIDSON
e owner and director of Davidson Galleries in Seattle, WA., Sam earned a B.A. at Wesleyan University and M.A. in art history at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1970. He oversaw inventory and publications for the national traveling print gallery, Ferdinand Roten Galleries of Baltimore, Maryland and, in 1973, returned to Seattle to establish Davidson Galleries.
In 1976 Davidson Galleries hosted the rst of three annual international print competitions, FOOTPRINT 1976, 1977, & 1978. To date, Davidson Galleries have held more than 800 exhibitions, some of which have
toured internationally. e gallery has three departments: Antique prints, Contemporary Prints and Drawings, and Contemporary Painting and Sculpture; all available to view online at davidsongalleries.com and in their bi-annual catalogues.
It was an honor to serve as a juror for the Biennial International Miniature Print Exhibition VII (BIMPE VII). As a dealer in original prints I fear that too often those in the commercial print realm are regarded as tainted and only able to see the decorative merits of any group of prints. Fear not. Any unconscious inclination in that direction was countered by my fellow jurors.
My congratulations to Peter Braune, Lesley Anderson and the scores of volunteers for continuing to devote the huge amount of energy required to host such an event. ank you too, to the hundreds of artists who oered up their art for consideration. e result was a wonderful range of images and media.
As a former host/sponsor of an international small format print competition “Footprint”, in the middle and late 1970’s, I have a clear appreciation of what is involved. Although dierent from the 1970’s because of a substantial number of digital contributions, this year’s entries showed again what huge spaces and graphic power are possible in a small format.
ose thirteen images that received acknowledgement beyond initial acceptance into the exhibition were representative of the 700+ submissions. In spite of good digital based works, most of the special recognition went

to traditional processes. Tomiyuki Sakuta, Yui Koyanagi, Cleo Wilkinson, Christine Ravaux, Kelsey Stephenson, and Annie Woodford chose intaglio. Kouki Tsuritani, Nikki Vahle, and Jim Westerguard sent wood engravings. Sergey Zlotnikov’s haunting narrative scene, “Children of the Dark” and David Morrish’s “Ramses” made strong use of photo based techniques.
Many thanks to my fellow jurors, Anna and Jennifer, and especially to Peter and Lesley of New Leaf Editions for making the 2012 BIMPE show such an important gift to the international print community.
and tested a new carbon tissue for photogravure which has been an excellent replacement for the extinct Autotype gelatin. She has developed several solutions to deal with all the variables and common problems encountered with the elaborate process of photogravure. Jennifer founded Cape Fear Press in 2001 and oers workshops in photogravure and photo etching. She also supplies a small line of specialty products for these processes.
Jennifer has exhibited her etchings along the East coast including New York City and internationally in Taiwan, Portugal, Australia and Latvia. Cape Fear Press also hosts the Big Print Block Party, a large scale steamroller relief printmaking event each spring in her hometown of Carolina Beach, NC. Jennifer received her BFA in printmaking from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC.

I felt very privileged, as well as a great sense of responsibility, when asked to be a juror for the BIMPE. Almost a thousand prints were submitted. e prints were placed in a dozen or so binders. As I faced the daunting task of judging them I asked myself what is the most objective and fair way to go about this. It seemed the best way was to go through all the prints once without making any denitive judgments to gain a greater scope of the whole, then go through all of them again taking more time with each print. I was very impressed with the range of work submitted and the quality of the various techniques. It was truly a learning experience to see so many original prints at one time. Printmaking has a very rich vocabulary of techniques and ways for the artist to express

themselves. e entire scope of techniques was covered with some artists taking these processes to limits rarely seen. I subscribe to the less is more philosophy, especially when it comes to small scale pieces such as this. Some artists went beyond the unlimited combination of ink and paper which I found unnecessary and distracting and I couldn't help but notice a few trends in this area. e pieces that stand out above the rest made the best use of their respective media in combination with stimulating content. e pieces that struck me the most have a way of taking me some place that I have been longing for and fulll the needs of my subconscious.
I would like to thank New Leaf again for inviting me to jury this show. I would also like to thank all the artists who submitted work.
ANNA-KAROLINA SZUL
e executive director of e Society of Northern Alberta Print-Artists Gallery, Anna graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2005 and was the artist in residence at Malaspina Printmakers in 2009. Anna’s most recent exhibition was held at the Steppes Gallery in Edmonton in June of 2012.
Jurying an exhibition is always a great honour and joy particularly one with a vast international reach as is the case with BIMPE. e pleasure comes from the unique opportunity to view contemporary print based artwork by an impressive number of artists from all around the world. rough this snapshot into the pulse of what is taking place in printmaking we see common themes and practices that are not related through a direct connetion between individuals but suggest a greater connected unconscious that we often take for granted.
e challenge in such a task occurs when we realize that the merit of each individual work cannot be highligted and the works must be compared and assessed by some standard rubric in order for a handful of prize winners to emerge. Although the process of looking at close to 1000 prints seemed daunting at rst it was actually quite simple and pleasant. Sam, Jennifer and I each looked at all the prints individually, created our own short lists and then hung the 75 prints that scored the highest on the wall. at is where the real work began. At that point we were down to 7.5% of the original works and only 1.4% to be recognized.
15
e process of assessing any artwork for me is the same:
1. Does the work move me? is is a vital characteristic because it is what stops you in your tracks, makes you wonder or feel a desire to know more.
2. Does the work stand on its own technically? For many people this is not an important factor, however, in an artform as process based as printmaking is, technique matters. If I start to wonder whether a mark is intentional, if a ngerprint was placed there or omitted purposefully then the work is missing something.
3. e third criteria is a little hard to explain, it is like the fairy dust in Peter Pan that allows everyone to y. It is that perfect marriage between concept and execution. If you look at a work of art and not only have no desire or idea how to improve it but are lost in the experience then it is complete. is element is dicult to judge by a rubric, it is instinctual and probably biased but thankfully art is not a science. In essence, it is acceptance without analysis.
ank you Peter, Lesley, Sam and Jennifer for including me in such a rare and wonderful experience.
