Introduction
This year at The Biennial International Miniature Print Exhibition (BIMPE) we were delighted to witness the exhibition’s continuing growth and evolution in size and quality. Prints began to trickle in as early as December of 2005, and as the deadline approached, our postman Wayne struggled daily with large stacks of “bimpes” from every continent - every day felt like Christmas. The number of entries doubled from the previous show and it became clear to us that BIMPE has established itself as a significant event in the printmaking world.
The prints themselves were widely varied in technique, image and subject. Our jurors, Maria Anna Parolin, Torrie Groening and Rodney Kon-opaki, charged with creating a show from almost 800 prints, did an outstanding job, which became apparent when the show was hung.
This year we were very fortunate to exhibit at the spacious Federation Gallery on Granville Island, Vancouver. The exhibition was subse-quently shown at Dundarave Print Workshop (Vancouver) during July, and completed its tour at the Tuktu Studio, Whitehorse, Yukon in September. It was a pleasure to see so many exquisite and varied prints all together. The response to the show in all of its incarnations was extremely positive and sales hit a record high.
There are many people who helped to make BIMPE IV an exceptional show, not least our sponsors and volunteers who are listed at the back of this catalogue. We are deeply grateful to our excellent website manager Chris Torgalson who created BIMPE’s presence on the in-ternet. Thanks also to Rosalind Rorke from the Federation of Canadian Artists for all her advice and enthusiasm. But most of all we would like to thank the artists from near and far who entered and continue to enter BIMPE. We look forward to seeing your work again!

Juror’s Statements
Torrie Groening
Torrie Groening has exhibited her work in group and solo shows since 1984 in Canada and the US. Her work is in several public gallery and museum collections. Torrie’s involvement in printmaking has included roles as a teacher, a master printer, collector and owner of a print gallery in Vancouver. Her recent work has incorporated traditional printmaking techniques, painting and new digital technology.www.TorrieGroening.com
I love prints! When Katie Dey and Peter Braune asked me to be a juror for BIMPE IV, I eagerly juggled to make the date. Imagine! The op-portunity to view so many treasures up close and without glass. The size alone necessitates a decisive working mode. What is possible in this small space?
Of the many exceptional works, I will highlight two portraits in which the artists achieved a presence of person in two very different ap-proaches and media. One of many prints that seem to be conceived and expertly executed for this miniature world, Jim Westergard’s, Ja-nus and the Big Toque is an intricate wood engraving that draws you in for closer inspection. Westergard’s admirable technique is married to a sly sense of humour that out-lasts the one-liner. I was curious to see how the new prints, those digital, magical images would hold up to the elegant beauty of say, a drypoint. Lost in Tide #2, David Laing’s digital print is a haunting, evocative view of an elderly person, mouth agape, seemingly trying to communicate with the viewer. In this puny space, memory, deteriorating senses, and lost communication are evident. I can’t imagine a more appropriate medium for this image.
It was encouraging to see this print show presented well and the works seen and celebrated by both Vancouverites and the many out of town visitors. To the artists: thank you for your work and all efforts to share it. To BIMPE: congratulations! You too, have ‘pulled it off’ with great success!
Rodney Konopaki
Rodney Konopaki worked for eleven years as a Master Printer at Tyler Graphics in New York where he collaborated with artists including Frank Stella, Helen Frankenthaler, David Hockney, Roy Lichtenstein and Nancy Graves. In Canada, he maintains an interest in collaborat-ing with other artists. His work begins with images taken from mass media that collide and find changed meaning with new elements. It is included in the collections of the Canada Council Art Bank, Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Saskatchewan Arts Board, University of Leth-bridge, University of Saskatchewan and Edmonton Art Gallery. Konopaki teaches Print Media at the Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design in Vancouver
In the fall of 2005, Peter Braune and Katie Dey asked me to sit on the jury for the Biennial International Miniature Print Exhibition. I agreed, not realizing the full extent of this commitment. In May of this year, I met with my esteemed colleagues to jury the submitted work. There were almost 800 entries from over 300 artists representing 48 countries. It was an astonishing number of entries for this, the fourth biennial. The task at hand was formidable.
5
The jury did not set a theme for the decisions we had to make but simply moved towards selecting the strongest work at hand. One of the first noteworthy observations was the consistent high quality of the prints submitted. Most of the participants sent three prints for con-sideration and all of them would be outstanding. In some cases, we selected the best of the lot. But for a few this was impossible and we selected all three submissions for inclusion in the show. We worked as a jury all day and into the night to get our job done. The most difficult task came at the very end. Selecting the recipients for the awards took us past midnight. There were just too many great prints! At the opening of the show, I was pleased to see all mediums well represented and many people commented on the noticeable amount of colour work in this year’s biennial!
There is one other remarkable aspect to this exhibition upon which I must comment. This is the fourth BIMPE exhibition organized and it receives minimal funding from outside agencies. It happens because Peter Braune is interested in printmaking and wants to prove that around the globe the making of prints it is a vital practice. I think he has proven his point and I salute New Leaf and Dundarave Print Workshop for its biennial effort as well as all the artists who submitted work for consideration this year.
Maria Anna Parolin
Maria Anna Parolin is a visual artist who is currently teaching at Emily Carr Institute and UBC in Vancouver. In 2003, she was awarded a Research Fellowship at Musashino Art University in Tokyo, Japan and was invited as a Visiting Artist at Emily Carr Institute in 2003/2004. She has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions both nationally and internationally including the Alberta Biennial of Contem-porary Art 2000, Gallery Pirka in Tokyo, and Galleria del Tintoretto in Venice, Italy, and was invited to the following artist residencies: Gros Morne National Park (Newfoundland), the Banff Centre, and Art Studio Itsukaichi (Tokyo, Japan).
“Where to start?” A question I asked myself when I walked into New Leaf Editions where I saw every square inch of wall and tabletop-like surface covered in an overwhelming amount of mini-prints from all over the world. It was incredible to witness the sheer quantity, quality and interest in this young print biennial.
I thank both Katie Dey and Peter Braune for giving me the honour and pleasure of working together with Torrie Groening and Rodney Konopaki. Through the many hours of the day (and night) we discussed, debated, and examined the many superior prints submitted. It was an overwhelming experience – especially when it came to deciding the top prizes. The prints ranged from being exceptionally challenging technically, to remarkably witty and effortless.
I look forward to experiencing future BIMPE Biennials. It gives Vancouverites an opportunity to appreciate creative prints from all over the world, and recognize the value of a traditional art practice that is getting stronger every year.
