¿Que vamos a cubrir? What will we cover?
• ¿Qué es diferente en una clase de doble vía?/What is different about a TWDL class?

¿Qué es diferente de una clase de doble vía?What is different about a TWDL class?
• La lectura y la escritura se enseñan exclusivamente en español desde K hasta 2º grado. La
lectura y escritura en inglés no se enseñan o ni se asesora formalmente hasta el 3r grado.
• Reading and Writing are taught exclusively in Spanish K-2nd grade. English reading and writing
are not formally taught or assessed until 3rd grade.
• Las matemáticas se enseñan en Español hasta el 6o grado.
• Math is taught in Spanish until 6th grade.
• Su hijo(a) tendrá 2 maestros de K-6o grado. Un maestro será su maestro de Español y el otro
será el maestro del Desarollo del Idioma Inglés. En kínder los niños verán a su maestra del
desarollo del idioma Inglés 2x por la semana por 30 minutos.
• Your child will have 2 teachers from K-6th grade. One teacher will be their Spanish teacher
and another will be their English Language Development teacher. In Kindergarten the children
will see their English Language Development teacher 2x a week for 30 min. each.
¿Qué es diferente de una clase de doble vía?What is different about a TWDL class?
• La maestra de Español NUNCA hablará Inglés con los alumnos y la maestra de Inglés NUNCA
hablará Español.
• The Spanish teacher will NEVER speak English with the students and the English teacher will
NEVER speak Spanish.
• El inglés se agrega gradualmente
• English is added gradually
– 10% kinder / kinder
– 20% 1st / 1o
– 30% 2nd / 2o
– 30%-40% 3rd / 3o
– 50% 4th and 5th / 4o y 5o 5
– 30%-10% 6th-9th / 6o-9o
¿Qué es diferente de una clase de doble vía?What is different about a TWDL class?
• Si completan el programa por la escuela secundaria, su hijo(a) se graduará con un sello de
bilingüismo en su diploma. Esto le ayudará a postularse a la universidad, recibir becas para
estudiar y ser elegibles para ciertos trabajos en el futuro.
• If they complete the program through high school, your child will graduate with a seal of
bilingualism on their diploma. This will assist them in applying to colleges, receiving
scholarships and being eligible for certain jobs in the future.
¿Está atrasado mi hijo?Is my child behind?
• ¡Acuérdese que su hijo(a) está procesando todo en 2 idiomas! La investigación científica nos
muestra que está aprendiendo lenguaje AHORITA mas rápido y mejor que en cualquier otra
etapa en su vida!
• Remember that your child is processing everything in two languages! Research shows that
they are learning language faster and better NOW than they will at any other time in their life!!
¿Como aprenden el lenguaje los niños? How our children learn language?
• Oír --Ver –Comprender – Tratar con errores -- Producir
• Hear -- See -- Comprehend – Trial and Error -- Produce
• Un niño(a) necesita interactuar con una palabra (esucharla, verla, decirla) 20 veces antes que
sea parte de su vocabulario.
• A child will need to interact with a word (hear, see, say) 20 times before it becomes a part of
their vocabulary.

¡No se preocupe!Don’t worry!
• Muchos padres se preocupan de que su hijo no está adquiriendo Inglés rápido o
suficientemente bien. Aquí están unas recomendaciones ... ..
– ¡Eviten a las comparaciones! Su hijo(a) está recibiendo una educación única y no se puede comparar
a los demás niños.
– No le enseñe explícitamente la fonética en Inglés
• Many parents worry that their child is not acquiring English fast or well enough. Here are my
recommendations…..
– Avoid comparisons!! Your child is receiving a unique education and is not comparable to other
children.
– Do not explicitly teach English phonics
¡No se preocupe!Don’t worry!• Acuérdese frecuentemente que para la escuela secundaria…
– La mayoría de los participantes de programa doble vía están a nivel en todas áreas
académicas por la medida del estado (en particular se anotan MUY ALTO en las áreas de
idioma.)
– Muchos están sobrepasando las expectativas
– Algunos aún están tomando clases a nivel de la universidad EN ESPAÑOL en la escuela
preparatoria
• Remind yourself often that by middle school….
– The majority of TWDL participants are on level in all academic areas as measured by the
state (they particularly score VERY high in language areas)
– Many are exceeding expectations
– Some are even taking college level courses IN SPANISH by high school
SOAR EXPECTATIONS/EXPECTATIVAS DE VOLAR SOAR
¡¡Todos los padres pueden hacer algo!!All parents can do something!!• Asegúrese que su hijo(a) duerma bien durante los días escolares. ¡Un(a) niño(a)
cansado(a) no aprende!
• Asegurese que su hijo(a) coma suficientemente antes de venir a la escuela. ¡Un(a)
niño(a) con hambre tendrá dificultad de concentrarse en la clase!
• Ayude a su hijo(a) escribir su nombre y apellido en la casa. Ayúdele sostener el lápiz
correctamente.
• Make sure your child has a good night’s rest every school night . A tired child cannot
learn!!
• Be sure that your child eats sufficiently before coming to school. Hungry children will
have trouble concentrating in class!!!
• Help your child write their first and last name at home. Help them grip their pencil
correctly.
¡¡Todos los padres pueden hacer algo!!All parents can do something!!
• ¡¡Hable con su hijo(a) cada día!! El leguaje oral estimula todos tipos de
aprendizaje y les ayuda a aprender a leer más rápido.
• Miren a su alrededor y hablen acerca de las letras, números y palabras que su
hijo(a) ve en su medio ambiente. ¡Anoten los cambios en la naturaleza
también!
• Talk to your child every day!! Oral language stimulates all kinds of learning and
helps children learn how to read faster.
• Look around and talk about letters, numbers words that your child sees in the
environment. Notice the changes in nature too!

• ATP (Action Team Partnership) MEETS EVERY 1st Tuesday OF THE MONTH
– A group of teachers, administrators, community businesses and parents
that plan school-wide practices and events to encourage a home-school
connection

– Come help teachers days a little easier by completing small jobs
with other volunteer parents!

• Do small jobs in the classroom
