Bicarbonate of soda and cornflour ornaments (thank goodness for Pinterest!)

Se come me siete completamente drogate di Pinterest avrete sicuramente notato la presenza sempre piú frequente di deliziose decorazione e altri lavori eseguiti

usando una particolare pasta modellabile, di cui io, ferma alla tradizionale pasta di sale, non ero proprio a conoscenza. 

Ho salvato diverse idee e progetti e giá l'anno scorso volevo provarci ma mi é mancato il tempo.. quest'anno mi sono presa in anticipo e finalmente ho provato

questa fantomatica pasta modellabile di bicarbonato e amido/farina di mais.

If you are, like me, completely addicted to Pinterest, you surely have noticed that lately, around the web, there are more and more decorations and crafts made of a

particular clay, that I didn't really know in the past (I only knew salt dough).I had saved a few projects and ideas already last year, and I wanted to try it, but

never had the time to.. finally this year I managed to start early and I had my first try with this bicarbonate of soda and cornflour clay.

In rete, oltre a idee sfiziose su usi e modi di sfruttare questa pasta, io ho trovato anche molte ricette, per lo piú simili, con qualche piccola variazione di dose. Ad ogni

modo farla é davvero semplicissimo e veloce e anche se non ho sicuramente inventato l'acqua calda, mi fa piacere condividere con voi la mia esperienza, se

magari, come me, non conoscevate questa utilissima pasta.Vi bastano davvero poche cose: del bicarbonato di sodia, dell'amido/farina di mais

(non so in italiano come si traduca? forse la maizena?), dell'acqua, e dei tagliabiscotti o altre formine per tagliare la pasta.

Around the web, besides many ways of using this clay, I also found many different recipes, more or less similar but with few slightly differences in the doses. Making it

was very quick and easy, and even if I surely didn't invent anything at all, I am happy to share with you my own experience, if maybe, like me, you had never had

a go with this.You really need only a few things: some bicarbonate of soda, some

cornflour/cornstarch, some water and some cookie cutters.

Le dosi che ho usato io sono: - una tazza di bicarbonato di sodio

- mezza tazza di amido di mais- mezza tazza di acqua

I used these quantities:- one cup of bicarbonate of soda

- half a cup of cornflour/cornstarch- half a cup of water

E il procedimento é piú facile da farsi che da spiegarsi.. in poche parole:1- mescolare in un pentolino il bicarbonato e l'amido di mais

2- aggiungere l'acqua e mescolare bene accendendo il fornello a fuoco medio/basso3- mescolare e mescolare e mescolare.. dopo qualche minuto vedrete che la pasta

tenderá a indurirsi e agglomerarsi staccandosi dalle pareti del pentolino4- continuare a mescolare formando una palla, quindi spegnere il pentolino

The procedure is really easy... in a few words:1- mix in a pot the bicarbonate of soda and the cornflour/starch

2- add the water and mix very well, then turn on the hobs at low/medium power3- mix and mix and mix... after a few minutes you will see that the dough will start

to get more solid and will detach from the pot4- continue mixing trying to create a ball, then turn off the hobs

5- trasferire la palla di pasta fuori dal pentolino e farla raffreddare coperta da uno strofinaccio

6- quando é a temperatura "maneggiabile" impastare bene per renderla omogenea.7- tirare la pasta con un mattarello ad un altezza di circa 5-6 mm. Tagliare le

formine usando i tagliabiscotti e perforare (se lo si desidera) con uno strumento appuntito. 

{consiglio: se la pasta é troppo asciutta e secca, unimidirsi le mani e impastarla, se invece é troppo umida, aggiungere un pó di amido di mais sul piano di lavoro}

8 - lasciare le decorazioni ad asciugare su un piano omogeneo e liscio. I tempi di sciugatura per me sono stati di circa un paio di giorni, so che si puó anche mettere

in forno a bassa temperatura ma pare ci sia il rischio di imbrunire le decorazioni quindi io ho preferito lasciarle asciugare all'aria.

{consiglio: girate le formine almeno una volta, dopo qualche ora che le avete messe ad asciugare, in quanto noterete che tendono ad incurvarsi da un lato}

5- transfer the dough ball out of the pot and let it cool down covered by a kitchen towel

6- when the temperature is cool enough to handle, start to knead it very well7- Roll out the dough to a thickness of 5-6 mm. Cut the shapes using some cookie

cutters and make a hole (if you require it) using a pointed tool.{tip: if the dough is too dry, dampen your hands a bit while you knead it, if instead

it's too wet, add a bit of cornflour to the working surface}8- leave the decorations to dry on a flat and smooth surface. The drying time for me

was around 2 days. I know that you can also put them in the oven, at low temperature, but there is a risk to get some burning to them, and I didn't want to

loose their whiteness so I preferred to leave them to dry naturally.{tip: turn the shapes upside down at least once after a few hours as you will see

that they tend to curl on one side}

Ho creato diverse formine e sono stata piuttosto contenta del risultato! Bianche bianchissime, belle lisce, e molto resistenti. Alcune si son crepate durante

l'asciugatura, e non so cosa io abbia sbagliato, ma la maggior parte sono venute fuori bene.

Gli usi sono davvero tanti e i piú svariati.. in rete troverte moltissime idee... per esempio decorazioni per l'albero, decorazioni per altri lavori natalizi, come corone, o

centrotavola, ma anche oggettini tridimensionali, natalizi e non! Io per queste festivitá li sto usando principalmente in due modi..

I created various ornaments and I was quite happy with the result! They are pure white, quite smooth and very resistant. Some of them cracked during the drying,

and I have no idea why that happened, but most of them were ok. The uses are so many... you can find many ideas in the web... for instance they can be Christmas tree ornaments, or decorations to add to other Christmas crafts, like wreaths, or centrepieces, but also tridimensional shapes, bot christmassy or not!

For this festive season I chose to use them mainly in two ways..

Come chiudipacco su alcune confezioni di biscottini handmade (gingerbread, biscotti natalizi vari e le adorabili rennine, altra idea recuperata dal santo-

santissimo Pinterest!!!) che ho preparato per un mercatino di beneficienza della scorsa settimana in azienda di Nicola. Ho aggiunto un semplicissimo nastrino a

quadretti, una tag tagliata a mano di carta kraft e qualche timbrino.. poco sforzo ma un effetto carinissimo!

As a decoration for some cookies little packages (some gingerbreads, some christmas cookies and some extra-cute reindeer cookies, another ideas found in

Pinterest!!!) that I prepared for a charity christmas fair that was held in my husband office last week. I only added a simple gingham ribbon, a handcut kraft paper tag

and a few stamps ... a little effort and a very cute result!

And as decorations for some of the gifts that are starting to appear under our tree. 

Queste decorazioni sono adorabili giá da sole in bianco, ma sono molto carine anche timbrate con piccoli messaggi o i nomi dei destinatari dei regali.. o qualche

immagine natalizia.. insomma ci sono infinite possibilitá.

These decorations are so cute left just simple and white, but I think they are very pretty also with some little words, name and messages stamped on them... or

maybe some christmassy little image.. the possibilities are endless.

Spero di avervi dato (o ricordato, se magari conoscevate giá questa tecnica) una buona idea.. manca poco meno di una settimana a Natale e direi che c'é ancora

tempo per qualche ultimo lavoro craft!
