I love springtime in Athens and here is why…It is prime time for Foley Field. Time to get out and support the

Diamond Dawgs over the Gators midmonth as well as over the Ra-zorbacks at the end of the month. I know the Dawgs have appreci-ated the fan support during the tragic injury of teammate JohnathanTaylor. The community outpouring is amazing. Smoothie King inFive Points gave away smoothies recently for donations to a fund forJT. Lots of folks have stepped up to the plate to show their support forCoach Perno and the team.

Read Chelsea’s interview of national super star Torrin Lawrenceon page 8 as we get ready for him back on the scene at the Spec TownsNational Team Invitational at our home track this weekend. The No.2 softball team is playing Kentucky at Jack Turner Stadium all week-end. And you can catch Coach Diaz and the tennis team matched upagainst Florida Friday evening at the Dan Magill Complex.

I am sad we won’t be home on St. Simons Island to watch CoachHaack’s Dawgs in the SEC Championship. That is always great fun!But it is the same weekend as the G Day game in Sanford Stadium onApril 16. No way I would miss seeing the first glance of the 2011team. The fun thing about Athens is there are always things to do andnot just the UGA athletic competitions. Downtown comes alive withthe sights and buzzing sound of cyclists and spectators for the 32nd an-nual Athens Twilight on April 29 & 30. Another buzz through townis we have Bravo cameras and some of today’s reality tv stars from RealHousewives of Atlanta transcending on the Classic City. Look out forPhaedra Parks and Kim Zolciak, who are coming to Athens FashionWeek (AFW) as hosts of a high tea brunch at The Foundry and Cock-tails & Couture for a Cause at the Classic Center, respectively. There arenumerous runway shows set for AFW benefiting numerous charitiesincluding Georgia 4H and Bundles of Joy for Preemies. As I said onpage 6, Athenians love to support great causes while we are havingour fun. Alana tells us more about AFW on page 16.

The AFW tagline is “Athens is Fashion” and I agree that in thestreets of Athens, on campus and at the Country Club, you can beamazed by the personal style reflected and often how forward andfashionable the Classic City can be. On page 6, local designer AndrewDowns takes on the topic of style. Anticipate some spotlights on Athe-nians that have great style in future columns by Andrew.

I would add that “Athens is Music” too. Local realtor by day andmusic aficionado by night, Daniel Peiken continues to keep us in theloop of the music scene in Athens on page 12. I am jealous after see-ing his photos of Snoop Dogg in the intimate setting of the 40 Watt. From a Beatles Tribute Band to Snarky Puppy with special guests Jaz-zchronic (both at Melting Point), you can catch a wide variety of showsat the great music venues in Athens. And the 2nd Annual AthensAmericana Festival celebrates the sounds of bluegrass, country, 'Amer-icana' and folk music on April 27-30. I will take any opportunity toget over to Little Kings Shuffle Club where several of the festival eventsare set.

And honestly, wouldn’t we say “Athens is Food” and “Athens isBotanical” too? We are blessed with a burgeoning food culture withfabulous dining establishments and even a Top Chef Master competi-tor in Hugh Acheson. But even in the homes of our locals, I am find-ing outstanding cooks. I am having a blast doing features ‘In theKitchen with…’ and this issue I enjoyed preparing and eating anArugula Percorino Salad with Linda Jerkins on page 18. Several of myneighbors were busy this past weekend sharing their fabulous kitchensand my favorite garden on the annual Athens Tour of Kitchens, whichbenefits the Georgia Children's Chorus. Take advantage of the op-portunity for inspiration and view five incredible private gardens inAthens on the Athens' 18th Annual Piedmont Gardeners' Garden Touron April 16 to benefit the UGA Horticulture Club.

I can’t get all the opportunities in this space, my editor husbandis going to have to use a tiny font as it is. Thanks for donning yourspecs to read the column and hopefully you marked your calendarand googled some of these events to buy tickets. Goodbye winter, hello spring!

It is hard to beat April in Athens. With finalexams and summer break lurking about one monthaway, the student social calendar is in full swing aswe try to squeeze as much fun as possible from therest of the school year in the Classic City.

From formals to philanthropy events to yourrun-of-the-mill late night tours of Clayton Street,Athens is always hopping this time of year. If youhappen to be looking for something to fill your timeas the temperatures rise, be sure to check out CodySchmelter’s list of things to do in Athens this springon page 14. A personal highlight of my spring un-dergrad days was heading to shows at the GeorgiaTheatre. With Wil Greene making steady progresson the renovations and the new mixed-use develop-ment next door gaining some solid tenants like Waf-fle House and Mama Goldberg’s, Athenians haveplenty to look forward to up on the corner of Lump-kin and Clayton heading into the summer.

Athenians have also been making time to findways to give back to the community recently. Youcan see photos from Prevent Child Abuse Athens’20th annual Starry Starry Night Fundraiser on page13. Also be sure to check out photos from Beta ThetaPi’s annual Choral Cup singing competition, whichgoes to benefit UGA Relay for Life.

Shifting our focus over to sports, April is alwaysa special time of year for sports fans in northeastGeorgia. For many golf fans, the Masters Tourna-ment, chaired by UGA Alumnus Billy Payne, is thehighlight of the spring calendar. Such golf enthusi-asts must also be thrilled to know that UGA will behosting the Stadion Classic at UGA, a PGA Tour Na-tionwide series event, for the second consecutiveyear in May. Bulldawg Golf alum and two-time PGATour winner Bubba Watson and Chip Beck recentlyhosted an event to promote the tournament at theUGA Golf Course, be sure to check out those photoson page 8.

Further, the UGA men’s and women’s golf teamsare headed into the SEC Championships at the SeaIsland (Men’s) and Auburn (Women’s) golf clubs, re-spectively. I recently had the chance to catch up withtwo of the area’s best golfers, Russell Henley andMarta Silva Zamora, for a fun tutorial on what theylook for in their equipment heading into champi-onship season. While Marta recently changed her en-tire bag to some shiny new Titleists, Russell has beenplaying the same Odyssey White Hot putter since hewas 11 years old. Don’t miss our “What’s in the Bag?”feature on page 10. Aside from golf, a huge congrat-ulations is in order to the Georgia Gym Dogs for ad-vancing to the NCAA Championships after narrowlymissing the cut in last year’s NCAA regional compe-tition. Further, the baseball team, which faces thetoughest schedule in the SEC, recently took seriesfrom LSU and Mississippi State at home at FoleyField.

Well, after just skimming a few of the best sportsand social highlights of this issue, I am already out ofspace. Here is to warm weather, efficient studyingand plenty of barking well into April!

April’s first weekend was a great one for Geor-gia. This is the time of year when Bulldog athlet-ics is in high gear, with at least a dozen sportscompeting or practicing at a given time. WhenGeorgia is winning in the spring – as is so oftenthe case in numerous sports – it’s one of the besttimes of the year to be in Athens.

April Fool’s Day fell on Friday, as the Bulldogsopened up a monster three-game SoutheasternConference series with Mississippi State at FoleyField. Georgia had pulled to .500 in league playwith a Sunday double-header sweep of LSU theprevious weekend. Facing what is far and awaythe toughest schedule in the nation – 22 of theBulldogs 27 games have come against teamsranked in the top 25 – Georgia has grinded its wayinto the thick of SEC race.

Before the first pitch was thrown at FoleyField, it was already a great day for two of Geor-gia’s most successful professional alumni. GordonBeckham went three-for-four with a double andscored three runs for the Chicago White Sox in a15-10 opening day victory over Cleveland. Mean-while in Houston, Chris Kirk had pushed his wayto top of the leader-board at the Shell HoustonOpen.

By the time the weekend wrapped on Sunday, there were ear to ear smiles across the Bulldog na-tion.

Behind sensational pitching, Georgia sweptthe three-game series from Mississippi State to im-prove to 6-3 in the SEC, a game out of first over-all and in the East. The Bulldogs, through three

weekends, are just one of five teams with winningconference marks. It’s been top heavy so far.Florida, Vanderbilt and South Carolina out of theEast are all 7-2, as is West-leader Alabama. Thencome the Dogs.

Every other team has a losing league mark. David Perno needed only five pitchers in the

weekend sweep of Mississippi State. Alex Wood,Michael Palazzone and Craig Gullickson were allexcellent in their starts. Blake Dietrich, one of thenation’s most improved pitchers, bridged Fridayand Sunday gaps, while closer Tyler Maloof pickedup three saves to up his league-leading total to 11.

Georgia out-homered Mississippi State 4-0through the series and wiggled out of a pair of keybases loaded jams.

This team, playing for fallen teammateJohnathan Taylor, who is in good spirits recover-ing at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, has some-thing working.

The Bulldogs play two mid-weekers withCharleston Southern then head to beautiful Ox-ford for another huge SEC weekend against OleMiss.

On Saturday night, Jay Clark’s gymnasticsteam had a strong second place posting at theNCAA Regional Championships in Athens to qual-ify for Nationals. Georgia has fought through a se-ries of injuries this year, and is hoping to peak atthe perfect time.

More good news trickled through on Sunday. Unfortunately for Kirk, Phil Mickleson fol-

lowed up his Saturday 63 with a 65 and won the

Shell Houston Open, but the former Georgia All-American, national champion and Hogan Awardwinner finished tied for second, collecting ahealthy check and gaining further notoriety as oneof the PGA Tour’s top up and coming players.

There was great news on the tennis front. Both the Georgia men and women swept their

weekend matched from Ole Miss and MississippiState. The women cruised to a pair of wins athome. The men pulled out a Sunday thriller inStarkville to cap the undefeated weekend.

It’s been an incredible run through league play. Both Manuel Diaz and Jeff Wallace have stellarsquads.

Georgia’s men and women are each a perfect8-0 in Southeastern Conference play and carrying12 match winning streaks.

There’s no question that Georgia will be oneof the prime contenders on both sides at theNCAA Championships at Stanford late nextmonth.

At the beautiful and treacherous UGA GolfCourse, at the Liz Murphey Invitational againstone of the strongest fields in the women’s game,Georgia’s Silva Zamora posted the fifth win of herstellar career – two shy of the school record sharedby Shauna Estes and Vicki Goetze.

Zamora closed strong with a final round 67,and Georgia was at its best down the stretch, play-ing the final six holes at six under par, finishingsixth.

It’s tough to beat Springtime in Athens, andApril is off to a stellar start.

It’s hard not to love any college town. Most are crawlingwith lively students and high levels of academics. Many col-lege towns have historical significance and beautiful buildingssitting on a sprawling, well-kept, campus.

As Athens has continued to be ranked in the top tenbest college campuses and places to live in the country foryears, many of my friends at surrounding anonymous uni-versities (Ahem… Auburn, South Carolina, Alabama, Floridaand Tennessee) have started to ask a question that Bulldawgsalready know the answer to; what makes Athens so differ-ent?

Don’t worry; I’ll start slow so non-bulldawgs can keepup.

As the birthplace of R.E.M., the B-52s and WidespreadPanic, Athens knows its music. Venues like The 40 WattClub, The Melting Point, Rialto Club and The Georgia The-atre, bring talented musicians to the Classic City constantly. On almost any given night, you can find a quality showsomewhere in town. Snoop Dogg, Citizen Cope, The Avett

Brothers and Sound Tribe are just a few examples of actsAthenians have to look forward to in the next few months.

Keep reading if you dare, Tigers. Our beautiful campus is another thing that sets Athens

apart from the rest. Built with a Greek influence, each build-ing on campus is unique, presenting extensive detail mixedwith the perfect amount of southern charm. With severalquads throughout campus, the trees and flowers are plenti-ful and make each walk to class more enjoyable. I also can’tforget to mention the Arch on North Campus that add his-tory, in addition to beauty to our university.

The Arch is not the only historic thing about UGA either. The tree that owns itself, located at Finley and Dearing Street,is certainly something that other college towns cannot claimto have. The story goes that a man named William Jacksondeeded the tree ownership of itself as far back as 1820. Theonly person to have ever seen this deed is Jackson himselfand the deed holds no legal standing under common lawtoday, but the tree still remains untouched.

The most notable thing that sets Athens aside from othercollege towns is the people. People really are what make eachtown special, and Athens has a lot of special people. Indi-viduals such as students, professors, musicians, artists, poets, business owners, bartenders, street performers and chefs, allhelp to make up the diverse population in Athens. The mix-ture of these personalities, ideas and talents come togetherto create a dynamic that is unlike anywhere else in the world.

As a senior at UGA, I admit I might be a tad bit biasedabout what makes Athens stand-out. But the great thingabout all college towns is that the people who live in themhave an eternal love for their towns. Athenians are rarelyboastful and we rarely bad-mouth a fellow university. Instead,we show endless pride and love for Athens knowing that oth-ers will see why we adore it so much. If you can’t take justmy word and you’re still not a believer, come to Athens on aSaturday in the fall. Somewhere between the Dawg Walk andthe Georgia fight song, I guarantee you will fall in love withAthens in a sea of 93,000 others feeling the exact same way.

By Andrew Downs Let’s start with the bottom line. There really is something to this thing called ‘’style.’’ You might not be interested but this is still about you. You might not think the time it takes to read this will be time well spent but you could be wrong. When it’s all said and done, there is a style to everything! Now, let’s back up. There is a style to everything each of us owns, thinks, says, produces, creates, achieves and so on. Like it or not, we deal with the effects of our own personal style constantly even if we aren’t aware of it. Our personal style can influence every choice we make; every communication in which we engage; i.e. getting a job, get-ting a date, and that ain’t all. So, what is style exactly? There are as many definitions of style as there are styles. I decided to search for a definition that would explain style in my lifetime and chose a dic-tionary from the year 1950. Webster defined style with such words as “manner and bear-ing,” “a manner of expression in language, art, work, employment, excellence, originality, character, speech, dress,”,and “the way we of conduct ourselves.” That pretty well defines style academically but there is much more to its definition. Inside this thing called style is discovery. Knowing ourselves, or how our behavior is perceived, is a key to unlock information about ourselves found below the surface of our every day lives. In perfecting the understanding of personal style we discover new ways of addressing and maybe changing much of what we do for the better. Self discovery-finding things in places we often overlook- is seldom easy but discov-ering little things can make a big difference. For me personally, the understanding of style-style of the moment- has driven my entire career. Today, I am in the business of interior design. Before that I was in clothing design and manufacturing. And before that I planned events in a New York flower shop where most every client was known for his or her own personal style. In my career understanding style was the key to my success and survival in a world graded by style. More than that it gave me an insight into all of the little pieces that come together to form our personalities. I feel very comfortable talking about the many ways style can elevate our days by understanding what it means in our lives. It’s about interactions and reactions. It’s about what makes us tick. It’s about what we like and don’t like and why. It’s about the way our personal style shows others what we’re all about. Publisher’s Note from Cheri Leavy:

We look forward to Andrew talking style and in particular Athens style with us in upcoming issues. He has several fun spotlights planned about unique Athenians showing off their personal style. Anticipate seeing some of these folks featured in their homes and gardens. Knowing Andrew, prepare to be thoroughly entertained. I can’t wait for him to introduce us to some new friends. Speaking of Athens style, Athens Fashion Week (AFW) is set for April 20-22 with numerous runway shows featuring men’s, ladies’ and children’s latest fashions as well as a gala on Saturday at the Classic Center and After Party at the Melting Point hosted by Kim Zolciak, the star of Real Housewives of Atlanta. AFW events will benefit numerous charities including Georgia 4H Foundation and Bundles of Joy for Preemies. That is the other fashionable thing about Athenians, we support great causes while we are having our fun. What is your major?Telecommunications.

What would be your dream job?I would love to one day work at ESPN.

What is the best advice you have ever gotten? My mom told me “don’t think.” When I stop thinking as much, everything works out.

Do you have any pre-meet rituals or superstitions? No… I just listen to my music and it gets me in the mood.

What other special talents do you have other than running?I can draw, write poetry and music and I can touch my feet to my head.

You are from Jacksonville. What do you miss most about home? The heat. Sometimes it gets a little cold up here, and snow is something new to me. It doesn’t snow too often in Jacksonville. I like it here, but Jacksonville is home.

How did you get into track?I got into track in my 11th grade year. It was kind of a bet between me and one of my friends because he was like “I’m faster than you,” and I said, “No you’re not.” So we ended up racing and going out for the track team. I ended up making it…he didn’t. I ended up falling in love with it.

What is your favorite event to compete in?My favorite event is the 4x4. I just like the 4x4 because it’s an intense race and it is a team effort, which makes it better.

Do you prefer to compete indoor or outdoor?I honestly prefer to compete outdoor. The curves indoor are a little bit too small for my long legs.

How is this years’ outdoor season different for you than your previous two?I am actually going into this outdoor season uninjured, so this is a major step for me.

How does this facility compare to others you have competed on?No one track is the same, but this facility has its perks just like any other facility has its own perks. I feel like I can run a fast race on this track, and I feel like I can run a fast race on another track, it just depends on my mindset that day. As far as other facilities, I think ours is up there with some of the best.

What advantage do you think it will be, if any, to have the SEC Invitational here at home?We are going to be home, so I am going to have a different mindset. I won’t have to go anywhere to prepare, because we are going to be right here. I am going to come out here and try and do something special for the home crowd.

Even though the outdoor season is different from indoor, do you think this SEC competition is going to be redemption for you?…We can say that…

This spring, a new chic event is sweeping Athens that will make any fashioni-sta excited. Athens Fashion Week kicks off April 20th and ends April 22nd, taking place at the Classic Center and several other Athens’ venues. These three days will be packed with fashion, socializing and even celebrities. As Chair of the Steering Commit-tee for Athens Fashion Week, Corey McCants explains, the event will be “Glam, rock and a little bit of southern flair! There is something for everyone at Athens Fashion Week. Fashion, fashion and more fashion. Several of our designers will be premiering their fall and summer lines at our event. The production itself is something that Athens has never seen and will be fashion history in the making.” Athens Fashion Week will not only feature some of the latest fashions from some top designers, but it also will benefit some local charities.

Featured Designers The week’s men’s collection designers include a number of exciting names. Wednesday’s show will feature looks from Ralph Lauren, Southern Proper, Southern Marsh, Bacon Handmade Neckwear, The Otter Bay Company, and more. All looks will showcase elements of a gentleman’s southern style, something any true Athenian won’t want to miss! Judith March’s latest collection will also take the catwalk Wednesday evening. Seeing such a well- renowned and beautiful brand on the Athens’ stage is exciting, and will surely help to put the Classic City on the fashion map. LK clothing will have a lively showing, which will include colorful and intricate designs from their collection. An exciting thing to look for will be their pieces for game day- perfect for getting ready for football in the fall! The Emma Graham show will be sure not to disappoint. Emma Mahon Jackie Graham will be showing pieces from their Spring/ Summer 2011 line. Expect to see

some exciting new twists on classic styles. In preparation for the warm months to come, Athens Fashion Week will also premiere the latest swimsuits from Victoria’s Secret. This should be an exciting show, also featuring popular entertainment.

Celebrities in the Classic City What would a fashion week be without celebrities? Aside from the numerous lo-cal celebrities sure to be in attendance at the shows- they are featuring Athens’ 25 most stylish people and two Atlanta area celebrities will also be hosting events to help kick off Athens rocking the runway. First, Phaedra Parks of Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” will host the Children’s fashion show taking place on Wednesday morning. Next on Thursday evening Kim Zolciak, also of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta,” will host the Green Dress Gala as well as an after party at the Melting Point.

Athens Fashion Week is about fabulous style in the Classic City, but the event also aims to give back to the community. Proceeds from various events over the week will go to benefit several charities and organizations around Athens and Georgia. Part of the proceeds from the gala and fashion shows will go to benefit the Geor-gia 4-H Foundation. The Georgia 4-H Foundation promotes youth development by providing financial support to reward deserving Georgia 4-Hers. Also included within 4-H activities are nearly a dozen fashion project areas- look for the products of some of these to be showcased in Athens Fashion Week events! Also to benefit from the week’s events is an organization called Bundles of Joy for Preemies. Founded by Sheri Goggin, former Miss Georgia, this multi- state program aims to offer support to premature babies and their families by offering information about premature births as well as support packages featuring many comforting items. As Corey McCants put it, “All proceeds from Athens Fashion Week will be donated to these amazing charities to ensure that these organizations will be able to continue to make a difference in even more lives than they already have.”

A native of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, Junior standout MartaSilva Zamora has spent the last five years of her life in the AmericanSouth. “I love the people here!” At just over 21 years old, SilvaZamora’s golf career includes a Spanish Amateur Championship andbeing featured on the Golf Channel’s reality show “School of Golf”while attending the Hank Haney IJGA. BI recently caught up withSilva Zamora to find out what clubs she carries en route to her sub-70scores.

Putter: I’m real simple with my clubs, I prefer them to look good. Iwould not be able to play with one of those crazy two-balls or theother big mallet putter you see today.

Putter Cover: The Solheim Cup is a women’s match play tournamentbetween the United States and Europe. the Junior Solheim Cupplayed two years, in 2005 and 2007. It’s a great experience, becauseafter we finish playing the Junior tournament we go watch the pros.

Driver: I love the new Titleist 910 D Series. They are so good looking! You are set at the ball and it looks like the club is going to do all thework itself.

Irons: I carry my 3 Iron just in case. When I am playing in the BritishHighlands or in Scotland I will use my 3 Iron all the time, but when Iam in the states I will use a 21 degree hybrid instead. I went to Cali-fornia to the Titleist Performance Institute, and they fit me for this setof irons there.

Wedges: Something I really like about Titleist is the wedges. I love theway they look and they even stamped my name on them!

After capturing the individual medalist honors at the 39th annual LizMurphey Collegiate Classic, Silva Zamora ascended to the No. 1 po-sition in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index. She and the teamhead to the SECs in Auburn, April 15-17.

After a stellar Junior season, Macon native Russell Henley is looking to lead his team toback-to-back SEC Championships this season. Recently the 2009-2010 Golfweek NationalPlayer of the Year caught up with BI to talk about “What’s in the bag.”

What do you think about the new Driver equipment that allows players to adjust the set-tings of their clubs?I have one of these new Nike adjustable drivers, which I’ve been playing for just over a yearnow. We can set up the club for different ball flights and heights. My whole life I’ve fought ahook, so I have the driver set up a little open, which makes a it a little easier for me to makea natural swing without worrying about bringing the ball too far to the left off the tee.

Do you carry the traditional iron set, 2 iron through 9 iron? This is my first set of irons that is not a “split-set” (between cavity backs and blades), I’m car-rying the Nike VR Pro Combos, 3 iron through 9 iron. I also use a hybrid instead of a 2iron.

Tell us about the flatstick. My brother gave me my putter (an Odyssey White Hot) when I was 11 for my birthday, I’venever played in any tournament without it, and I would never change anything about it.

How often do you change your grips?Every 2 or 3 months on my actual clubs, and I will change my putter grip about once ayear.

How many wedges do you carry?I carry a 47 degree pitching wedge, a 54 degree gap wedge and a 60 degree lob wedge that Iuse for short bunker shots.

The Georgia men’s golf team returns to action April 15-17 at the SEC Championshipshosted by the Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island.

Float the Broad RiverLet's face it, the mercury rises pretty fast in Athens and without a waterpark anywhere near we have to find some way tocool off. The Broad River offers the solution; commonlyknown as “Floating the Broad,” one can rent a canoe and floatdown an 8-mile stretch of River. It is a sight to behold. Thinkof it as Nature's Lazy River, a great way to cool down and es-cape the stresses of daily life

By Chelsea Swanhart In a fashion-forward town such as Athens, where students are willing to live off of cereal in order to buy a new dress for Friday night, accessories are a must. Belts, shoes, hats and bags help to make an outfit, but it is the jewelry that always seems to add the final touch. Fashionistas in Athens are lucky to be surrounded by the most beautiful and unique jewelry stores around. Aurum Studios, JWR Jewelers and Athena Jewelers are perfect examples of where to go when you find yourself in need of a stunning piece of jewelry. Aurum Studios, located downtown, provides services in designing, apprais-ing and repairing jewelry. They offer a wide selection of rings, bracelets, earrings and necklaces and if you would like, Aurum Studios jewelers will even create jewelry made specifically for you! For those that are also interested in art, Aurum Studios features some of North Georgia’s most beautiful paintings, pottery and woodwork. Although each piece of jewelry is striking, jewelry made by artist Michael Michaud stands out as some of the most unique in the store. Michaud graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology’s School for Ameri-can Craftsmen in 1980 after studying under talented designers, Hans Christenson and Gary Griffin. Michaud’s jewelry is inspired by his love for nature, which is evident in each piece of jewelry he makes. Jewelry featuring leaves, flowers and even peas in a pod, demonstrate his passion for the outdoors and jewelry. JWR Jewelers, voted the #1 jewelry store by readers of the Athens Banner Herald, is definitely another favorite in Athens. “Making our customers for a lifetime” is the motto that the staff at JWR Jewelers strives to follow each day while offering services such as jewelry repair, appraisals, engraving, pearl stringing and even custom design. With collections such as Imperial Pearls, Pandora and Elle, you can always find just the right piece. If you are looking for something especially different, Paul Henriques, master jew-eler at JWR, offers an abundance of stunning handcrafted jewelry to choose from. Born in Jamaica, Henriques, is a 3rd generation jeweler who started learning the jewelry business early in life from his father. Henriques received his master jeweler title from Goldschmiede Schule in Germany, after training there for 9 years. Henriques came to Athens in 2004 and joined forces with JWR Jewelers, where he has been doing incred-ible work designing jewelry ever since. In 2008 and 2009, Henriques’ jewelry was chosen as Best of Show in the Georgia Jewelers’ association Design contest. His passion is designing colored gemstone jewelry and Henriques even created an adorable gold Georgia bulldog necklace that every lady bulldog would love to have. Athena Jewelers is another great option for jewelry in Athens. When thinking of Athena Jewelers, you may visualize the giant frog statue that sits right outside the door. But inside, Athena Jewelers offers striking pieces of jewelry that any Athens-chic person would enjoy. They specialize in jewelry repair and design as well as glass etching and engraving. Athena Jewelers really holds true to their motto, “the art of it all,” as they really can do it all. Setting itself apart from other jewelry stores, they also feature a “bead nook” with hundreds of different beads to choose from. Athena Jewelers carries handcrafted jewelry made by artists from all over, including by owner Dana Johnson, a third generation jeweler. All of these stores provide special services and unique jewelry for various types of customers. Whether you are shopping in Athens for an exquisite piece to wear to a charity event, a trendy piece for a concert or a spirited piece for a game, you are sure to find something you will love in each of these stores.

Arugula Pecorino SaladThis salad is one of Linda’s signature dishes and she says everyone always enjoys it wherever she serves it. She suggests topping this base with chicken, tuna or shrimp. You can also try different greens or beans but she prefers the nutty flavor of the organic baby arugula.

dressing:1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil1/4 cup red wine vinegarsalt and pepper to taste

Place arugula on serving platter and top with remaining ingredients. Pour dressing over and lightly toss.

In the kitchen with Linda Jerkins

From the second I walked into Linda Jerkins home, I knew I had met a kindred spirit and not because she is a Georgia Bulldog but because she is an avid art collector. I was enthralled with her incredible collection. It runs the gamut with all mediums and landscapes, portraits and abstracts all hanging together and complimenting each other. She also collects silver, linens and porcelain which has been a hobby for the last 35 years that turned into a business over the last ten years.

Linda and her businesspartner Betsy Chastain have a booth called Top Drawer, right when you walk in Athens Interior Market and Linda has another booth in conjunction with her website, www.rubylane.com/shop/topdraw. With annual trips abroad and the silver books she reads like novels, Linda has become a silver guru! And now she has made friends and contacts all over the world and regularly ships to New York, California and Texas but has even shipped as far as Israel, Denmark and Thailand.

These destinations are a far cry from her native town of Reidsville, Georgia. She met her Athenian husband Keith while they were at the University of Georgia and when she graduated in 1968, she went straight into teach-ing Math and Science. When her son Stuart was born, she became a stay at home mom. Needing to have her finger in something at all times, she worked for Appointments at Five and learned a lot during her time there. She can still be found at the shop picking up silver or pewter to be engraved for their clientele.

So look out for Linda on the tennis courts or antiquing and maybe you will get to meet her two new babies Alfred and Willie 2.

Visit guide2athens website to see more of the photoshoot and “how to” for the Arugula Pecorino Salad. It’s delish!
