Being one of the last graduating classes at Georgiathat was on the quarter system, it’s still a little strange tome that current students close out the school year in thebeginning of May. I understand that’s how it has to be,but some of my fondest memories of student life wereMay trips to the shoals and lakes.

Nonetheless in the coming days, another crop offine youngsters will don their cap and gowns and re-ceive their diploma from our awesome university.

Some will quickly enter the world of full-time em-ployment, while others will continue their education byentering graduate school. And there will surely be a hostof folks who will choose to travel or perhaps live in aski or beach town for a season or two.

That’s the beauty of graduation as young adults settheir course for the next journey. Yes it’s both thrillingand frightening all wrapped up in one.

While I chose option number three after my owngraduation, I certainly appreciate those folks who knowthey are ready to start their careers or those who havesuch a keen interest in their field to further the educa-tion of it.

My only advice to the Class of 2010 is to knowthere are plenty of highs and lows coming your way inthe future. Enjoy the good ones and learn and growfrom the not so good ones.

To my right, BI Athens’ editor Ryan Scates will re-ceive his diploma in the coming days and I must say hewill have earned it by not only completing his courserequirements, but also doing many great things beyondthe classroom. The joke among people my age andabove is that the current students of UGA certainly makeour proud piece of paper on the wall worth even more.And that’s certainly the case with Ryan and the eightpeople we have profiled on our center spread (pages 8,9).

Not only will Ryan begin law school at Georgia thisfall, he also will be marrying his sweetheart, KielZanone, in the near future. Anyone who knows Ryan re-alizes what an old soul he has, so marriage at the ripeage of 22 isn’t all that surprising. And while some cyn-ics may scratch their heads at such a huge commitment,I encourage you to check out the photo from their recentengagement party on page 10. I’ll put my money thatthose googly eyes will stand the test of time.

Just like the school year, the UGA sports scene isdrawing to a close. However for those who call Athenshome or those hanging out through the remainder ofthe month, attending the NCAA Tennis Tournament forboth the men and women will certainly be worth yourtime beginning on the 18th. For details turn to page12.

And while 2010 has been tough for our DiamondDawgs, there are a few remaining home stands to soakup some rays and America’s pastime. Thankfully as JeffDantzler reports on page 4, our boys made it homesafely from the torrential weather in Nashville this pastweekend.

For now, we say congratulations and good luck tothe University of Georgia Class of 2010. Much successin whatever your future holds and of course, GODAWGS!

For over 5,000 UGA students, that bitter-sweet moment is drawing near.

No, not the end of $1 Budweiser Tuesdayson Clayton Street, although those will bemissed dearly.

And as nice as it is to say goodbye to theprospect of an 8:00 am class, that’s not what I’mtalking about either.

Around 7:30 pm on Saturday, May 8th,University President Michael Adams will con-fer degrees on over 5,000 of our state’s best andbrightest. No doubt many of these new gradswill head straight up the hill to North Campus,where they can finally walk through the Archand into the real world, joining the ranks ofcountless others before them who can lookback at America’s first state chartered univer-sity with a smile and think “remember when.”

Sure, having a University degree is quite anachievement, but when you are studying in asetting as ideal as Athens, who really cares tograduate?

In our graduation issue of BI Athens, wehave profiled a handful of the University ofGeorgia’s class of 2010. To think, when thesestudents were freshman they could go see aconcert at the Georgia Theatre, hang out withKnowshon Moreno during his redshirt season,get their picture taken with Uga VI and go parktheir cars where the behemoth Tate Center Ex-pansion now stands. For better or worse, thisgroup of graduates has seen plenty of changeon both local and national levels during theirtime at the University. If you are interested inattending commencement, head over to SanfordStadium at 6:00 pm to see the traditional pro-cession which is led by the Athens Chief of Po-lice with his saber drawn to ward off the dangerof Indian attack.

In sports news, preparations are heating upfor the NCAA Tennis Tournament. The tourna-ment will be held May 18-31 at the Dan MagillTennis Complex here in Athens. After bothmen’s and women’s tennis teams were upset intheir respective SEC tournaments, I’m countingon seeing the Dawgs come out swinging for thebig dance on their home turf. We have includedan unofficial spectator’s guide in this issue toget you all caught up on this year’s tournament,so get fired up and ready to bark the Dawgs totheir third national title in the past four years!

Well that about wraps it up for this SeniorBulldog. As nice as it is to write about theprospect of graduation, the reality of finalskeeps getting in the way of any premature cel-ebration. When you hear it’s tough on the road, believe itIf you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to

be a student – athlete - or to be associatedwith the team as part of the staff - for the Uni-versity of Georgia on the road in the South-eastern Conference, it’s not all glamour.

This could happen to you, because it didto us.

Georgia’s baseball program has enjoyedunparalleled and incredible success under thewatch of David Perno, highlighted by threetrips to the College World Series, a pair ofSoutheastern Conference championships andfive of the school’s 10 all-time NCAA tourna-ment berths.

But the Bulldogs are having a tough year.It happens in baseball. There are only 11.7scholarships, the constant fight against themajor league draft, an incredibly tough sched-ule, and this year, an inordinate number ofinjuries, beginning with the tragic life-alteringaccident suffered by the incredibly brave andcourageous young freshman Chance Veazey –an unimaginable source of inspiration.

While Georgia is in a rebuilding year, justtwo years removed from a spot in the CollegeWorld Series Championship Series and a yearaway from being ranked No. 1 nationally forthree weeks, the 2010 season is one thatmany of the Bulldogs chief rivals have beenpointing to as a “can-do campaign.”

It’s been a perfect storm. And April was the absolute most brutal

portion of a trying campaign. Of Georgia’s 19games in the month, 17 came against teamsranked in the top 20 nationally. It was a dif-ficult month.

Then came May 1 in the Music City, asGeorgia was set to play the second of a threegame series with Vanderbilt.

The forecast had not been looking good. Your fearless play-by-play announcer

awoke to the Weather Channel, where the In-terstate-40 corridor between Nashville andMemphis was listed as the worst weather areain the country.

Following a quick workout and the nor-mal morning routine of breakfast and solvingall the problems of the world, we prepared fora delicious Italian pregame meal.

The bus departed the hotel at 12:30 cen-tral time.

We would return at 6:45. En route to Buca de Pepe, our bus driver

was severely crossed up between the three In-terstates of 24, 40 and 65, as well as the I-440“loop connector.” A 15 to 20 minute drivetook an hour and 15 minutes.

When lunch was done, we found our-selves trapped in the parking lot, as connect-ing roads were completely under water. Twopeople had to be pulled from their cars. Wemaneuvered around the lot looking for an es-cape route and discovered another dozen carsthat were covered up to the windows. So wereturned to the restaurant and watched tele-

vision with other stranded eaters. Nashville was in the midst of a record

rainfall, a 100-year flood, and tornadowatches and warnings. A portion of I-24 be-tween the Music City and Chattanooga wascompletely washed over, and trapped 18-wheelers were covered up to their roofs. Boatshad to rescue drivers.

We finally found an “escape route” at5:15 and made the getaway from the parkinglot, where we found ourselves in anotherparking lot, also known as Interstate 65.What should have been a 20 minute drivetook another hour and a half. A creek hadrisen so high on both sides of the interstate,that it was a mere foot away from overtakingthe highway.

First pitch was scheduled for 6:00. Vanderbilt coach Tim Corbin was insis-

tent that there would be a break in theweather and that we’d be able to play. TheNashville Sounds minor league team can-celled their game. But with Georgia strug-gling, and the Commodores trying to post anover-.500 SEC record, the fact that floods hadravaged Nashville seemed to have no effecton the game. We arrived at the hotel at 6:45,and left to go to the stadium at 7:15.

The mayor and emergency managementagency urged all to stay home. Right beforeleaving, my buddy Chris Lakos, our sportsinformation director, caught a tv report wheretwo police officers, who were rescuingstranded drivers, had to be rescued from atree.

Five people died as a result of the stormsand floods, including at least one strandeddriver who drown in their car.

We got to the stadium at 7:45 andstarted the game at 8:27 – 12 minutes laterthan Corbin had hoped. We played three anda half innings and the Bulldogs led 4-2 whenheavy rains came again. It was back to thehotel, where we pulled in around 11:00, withtornado warnings in the area until 3:00 a.m.The forecast for Sunday looked awful.

The week prior, it had rained hard inAthens and the forecast looked awful. Theultra – classy Perno, in conjunction withSouth Carolina coach Ray Tanner, decided togo ahead and rain the game out. We playeda double header on Sunday and the Game-cock student – athletes didn’t have to spendan entire day in limbo.

So as I sign off, I was hoping for a winand thankful for my Vanderbilt friends JoeFisher and Thomas Samuel (our radio andSID counterparts), who gave us an alternateroute to shoot past the flooded out portion ofI-24 so that we might hopefully get back in asafe and timely fashion Sunday.

Final exams started Monday.So when you hear that it’s tough on the

road, believe it.

Lucky ones stay in Athens for summerSpring semester is already over?

It is hard to believe that the 2009-2010 academic year is drawing to aclose. As I cope with my own stressof finals and multiple project dead-lines, I can not imagine what it wouldbe like to add the pressures andstresses of also being an athlete onone of UGA’s teams.

Our UGA Athletes have had aneventful past few weeks. Our men’sgolf team just won the SEC tourna-ment. The UGA Equestrian team wontheir third consecutive NationalChampionship. The soccer team wel-comed a new head coach. The LadyBulldawgs Swimming and Divingteam won the SEC Conference.There have also been multiple indi-vidual awards on all of Georgia’s var-sity teams. Overall, the 2009-2010academic year was a successful onefor our student athletes.

Even though most students arementally checking-out after their lastfinal exams and packing up theirrooms, there is still a lot going on atUGA in the next few weeks. Forsports, the men’s golf is moving on tothe next step in their journey towardsthe National Championship Tourna-ment. They qualified and will be par-ticipating in the NCAA RegionTournament at the end of May. Thetennis teams will start the first roundof the NCAA tournament in mid May.The baseball and softball teams arestill in the midst of their seasons.Track and Field athletes have theGeorgia Invitational meet and the

SEC Championships coming up thismonth as well.

Aside from the UGA athleticevents that are still going on, summerin Athens has a lot to offer. Whilesome students run off to their sum-mer internships, foreign countries forstudy abroad programs, or headhome for summer jobs, the luckyones stay in Athens.

It is hard to compare the summerI spent life guarding at my hometownpool, fishing out questionable itemsfrom the kiddy pool and telling tenyear olds to stop running, to the sum-mer weeks I have spent in Athen, butit is definitely something every stu-dent should try to experience. Ath-fest music festival, hanging out at thepool, taking classes; summertime inAthens is a different world than theintensity of fall semester that comesbefore you know it. Even though thethought of our first kickoff this Sep-tember gives me goose bumps, I amexcited about spending the little extratime I have this summer in Athens.

Although I have to give up an-other wonderful summer babysitting65 elementary school kids in themidst of a water-gun war fare, I amexcited to hang out in Athens for afew weeks in the summer beforemaking my way to my to Bristol foran internship with ESPN. Eventhough I will be up in Connecticutwatching endless tapes of profes-sional baseball and World Cupfootage, my heart will still be in sum-mertime Athens.

2010 NCAA tennis tourney comes to Athens May 18-31 2010 NCAA tennis tourney comes to Athens May 18-31 The 2010 NCAA Tennis Tournament marks the 22nd time the Dan Magill Tennis

Complex has played host to the men’s event, and fifth time to host the women’stournament. Athens is an extremely popular spot for the tournament, and hosted theNCAA’s 13 years in a row from 1977-1989. The NCAA tournament was last held inAthens in 2007 and will return again in 2012.

Tickets are on sale now at GeorgiaDogs.com. Adult Grandstand tickets are $100and include all session bleacher seating for 12 outdoor and four indoor courtsthroughout the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Youth Grandstand tickets are $60.

Team practices begin in Athens on Tuesday, May 18th and continue on Wednes-day, May 19th.

Competition in Athens begins Thursday, May 20th with the Women’s Team Tour-nament in the Round of 16. Matches schedule

Stegeman Coliseum Set for Facelift

Construction on Stegeman Coliseum isset to begin on May 10. The project willadd new lobbies on the Carlton andSmith Street sides of the facility, and in-cludes renovation of the main concourse,concession stands and restrooms. Theproject will continue through November30.

Grace Taylor, Hunter Lainhart andWomen's Golf Team Honored Hunter Lainhart and Grace Taylor havebeen awarded the Southeastern Confer-ence Boyd McWhorter Post GraduateAward. The award is given as a scholar-ship to student athletes pursuing gradu-ate degrees.
