2008-2009 WILDCAT OUTLOOK New head coach Chris Kielsmeier inherits a winning tradition with the Wayne State College women’s basketball program, but winning is nothing new for Kielsmeier. The Iowa State graduate and Hubbard, Iowa native takes over a Wildcat basketball program that was 22-10 last season and made the NCAA Tournament for the second time in the last three seasons. He replaces Ryun Williams, who took over at the University of South Dakota last spring after compiling a 182-106 record in 10 seasons as coach of the Wildcats. Kielsmeier comes to Wayne State after serving eight years as head coach at Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas, an NCAA Division III school. He coached the Lady Jackets to an impressive 179-44 record and led Howard Payne to a 33-0 record and the NCAA Division III national championship in 2007-08. With a new coaching change, there is always concern with how everyone will handle the transition, but Kielsmeier said the transition with the Wildcats has been a smooth one. “From day one, our players have embraced the new coaching staff and made the transition very smooth for everyone,” commented Kielsmeier. “Our players have a tremendous commitment to our program and are working extremely hard every day to be successful both on and off the court. They want to win and I believe they are beginning to understand what needs to be done on a daily basis to accomplish great things.” The Wildcats return two starters and seven letter winners from last year’s team that fi nished second in the NSIC with a 12-6 league mark and reached the NSIC Tournament Championship game along with upsetting #6 North Dakota in the fi rst round of the NCAA Tournament. WSC still features a young squad with nine of the 12 players on the roster either freshmen or sophomores. “We have a young, but very talented team,” said Kielsmeier. “This will be the best shooting team I have ever coached. It’s an exciting time for WSC women’s basketball. We want this program to be one of the best in the country and this year’s team will lay the foundation of establishing this elite status.” The lone senior on the team is 5-9 forward Laqiusha Cook, a Second Team All-NSIC selection last season who averaged 15.0 points and 4.1 rebounds a game as a guard for the Wildcats. “Laquisha will play the three position this year and has a chance to be one of the best players in the NSIC,” remarked Kielsmeier.

10 2008-09 Wayne State Women's Basketball

The other returning starter is 6-4 sophomore center Jodie Boss of Columbus, who was the 2007-08 Co-NSIC Freshman of the Year last season. Boss averaged 7.8 points and 5.1 rebounds per game while making 23 starts one year ago as a freshman. She shattered the single season record for blocked shots at WSC, recording 90 blocks to lead the NSIC while ranking fi fth in NCAA Division II at 2.8 blocks per game. The two juniors on the Wildcat squad will be called upon for leadership roles this season. 5-6 guard Jennifer Yee was instant offense off the bench last season, averaging 6.0 points a game while draining a team-high 54 three pointers for the Wildcats. Kati Jo Christensen, a 5-9 junior guard/forward, contributed 3.1 points and 2.1 rebounds per game last season and will be called upon to score more from the perimeter this season. Boss headlines a group of fi ve sophomores that will be key players on this year’s squad. Along with Boss, another big force inside for the Wildcats this season will be 6-2 sophomore center Mara Hjelle, who averaged 5.1 points and 4.8 rebounds per game last season. Hjelle was especially strong in the second half of last season and scored a career-high 17 points in the NCAA Tournament win over North Dakota. Three other sophomores gained valuable experience last season and will see more playing time this season. They include 5-11 sophomore forward Alyssa Fischbach of Mellette, South Dakota, who average 2.0 points in 10 games last season. JulieAnn Wagner, a 5-11 sophomore forward from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, accounted for 1.4 points in 15 games last season and is a great shooter. Newcastle sophomore Paige Pollard, a 5-9 sophomore guard, averaged 1.0 point a game last season while seeing action in 10 contests. Four freshmen, all guards, will need to step up and contribute immediately at the point guard and shooting guard positions for the Wildcats this season. Alisha Brown is a 5-3 point guard from El Paso, Texas and averaged 15.6 points and 4.0 assists per game as a senior last season at Franklin High School. Clare Duwelius, a 5-10 guard from West Des Moines Dowling Catholic High School in Iowa, was a Second Team All-State selection last season. Micha Mims, a 5-7 guard from Cedar Rapids Washington HS in Iowa, led her team to the Class 4A runner up fi nish last season and had an 88-14 record in high school. The fi nal freshmen is Ali Schwartzwald of Bethel, Minnesota, who averaged 16 points, 3.6 assists and 3.6 steals per game last season at St. Francis High School. Wayne State will open the season on Saturday and Sunday, November 15 and 16 at the Colorado School of Mines Tip Off Classic in Golden, Colorado, playing Colorado Christian and Colorado School of Mines. The Wildcats have a total of 12 home games this season at Rice Auditorium with the fi rst home game on Monday, November 24th vs. instate rival Nebraska-Kearney starting at 6:00 p.m.

2007-08 SEASON REVIEW

The Wayne State College women's basketball team achieved numerous milestones during the 2007-08 campaign, resulting in a 22-10 season that saw the Wildcats advance to the NCAA Division II Nation-al Tournament for the second time in three seasons. The Wildcats were competitive the entire season with eight of the 10 losses coming by fi ve points or less, including four losses by one point and another loss by two points. Wayne State won their fi rst-ever NCAA Tour-nament game, shocking #6 North Dakota 85-78 in the fi rst round of the NCAA Division II North Central Regional in Vermillion, South Dakota. The Wildcats were then edged by Minnesota State in the regional semi-fi nals 64-62 as the Mavericks hit a shot at the buzzer to win the game, but WSC established itself as a team to be reckoned with in future years with its showing at the NCAA Tournament. It was the third time in the last four seasons that the Wildcats have won 20 or more games in a season. The Wildcats' longest win streak of the season was fi ve games, but WSC never lost more than two games in a row as the Wildcats fi nished second in the Northern Sun Conference regular season standings with a 12-6 league mark. WSC opened the NSIC Tournament with a hard-fought 74-65 win over Northern State, then ad-vanced to the NSIC Tournament Championship game for the second time in three seasons with a 70-58 win over the University of Mary. In the title game, regu-lar season champion Concordia, St. Paul defeated Wayne State 70-65 but the Wildcats still secured the #7 seed for the NCAA North Central Regional Tourna-ment and the school's second appearance in post-season play in the last three seasons.

Wayne State landed four players on the NSIC All-Conference Team as junior guard Laquisha Cook was named Second Team All-Conference. Senior guard Andrea Schoepf and junior forward Kylee Mc-Gill both received Third Team All-NSIC honors while freshman center Jodie Boss was award the NSIC Co-Freshman Player of the Year, sharing the honor with Minnesota, Crookston's Jamie Zelinsky. Cook led WSC in scoring averaging 15.0 points per game to rank seventh in the NSIC. She shot 44.6 percent from the fi eld and 77.6 percent at the free throw line for the Wildcats. Schoepf averaged 11.3 points per game to rank second on the team and 14th in the NSIC. Mc-Gill accounted for 10.8 points and 7.7 rebounds per game, ranking in the top 10 in the NSIC in six major categories. She was second in defensive rebounds (5.89), fourth in steals (1.85), fi fth in rebounds (7.7), sixth in free throw percentage (.821), seventh in blocked shots (0.89) and eighth in fi eld goal percent-age (.521). McGill also had fi ve double-doubles dur-ing the season to rank among NSIC leaders. Boss, a 6-4 freshman from Columbus, rewrote the Wildcat record book for blocked shots by notch-ing 90 blocked shots in 32 games. Her average of 2.81 blocks per game led the NSIC and ranked fi fth in NCAA Division II. She set school records for blocked shots in a game (10 vs. Concordia, St. Paul on 1-18-08) and blocks in a single season, shattering the old school mark of 52 set by Jodi Otjen in the 1990-91 season. The 2007-08 team set a new school record for free throws made in a season (501) and was sec-ond in the most points scored in a single season with 2,273.

THE NORTHERN SUNINTERCOLLEGIATE CONFERENCE

2008-09 Wayne State Women's Basketball 27

Founded in 1932, the Northern Intercollegiate Conference (NIC) has enjoyed a varied existence in the upper Midwest region it calls home. In the spring of 1992 the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) was formed out of the merger of the NIC, the men’s conference, and the women’s Northern Sun Conference (NSC). The NSC had existed since 1979. The NSIC is currently made up of institutions from Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota. In the 2008-09 academic year, the NSIC expanded to a 14-team league with the addition of Augustana College, University of Minnesota Duluth, Minnesota State University, Mankato and St. Cloud State University. Since 1932, various institutions have competed in the NSIC. Bemidji State University, Minnesota State University Moorhead and Winona State University are charter members and have remained in the conference for the 76 years of its existence. Minnesota State University, Mankato and St. Cloud State were also charter members, but left the league in 1981 (MSU left the league in 1969 and returned in 1977). The University of Minnesota Duluth, which departed the league in 2005-06 through 2007-08 seasons, was also an original member. Other current members joined in later years: Southwest Minnesota State University in 1969, Northern State University in 1978, Wayne State College (Nebraska) in 1998, Concordia University, St. Paul and the University of Minnesota, Crookston in 1999, the University of Mary and Upper Iowa University in 2006 and Augustana College in 2008. The University of Minnesota, Morris became a league member in 1966, however, the Cougars opted for the NCAA Division III ranks in 2003. Michigan Tech was part of the NIC from 1969 to 1977 as well. Before the NSIC became eligible for National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championship competition in 1995, its member institutions had an extremely rich tradition in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The NIC’s and NSC’s tenure in the NAIA included several national championship teams and individuals as well as many national qualifi ers. The NSIC has gained national recognition in recent years as three teams have won National Championships. Winona State men’s basketball made three straight trips to the NCAA Division II National Championship game, winning the 2006 and 2008 games and los-ing the 2007 game on a last second shot. During that period, the Warriors won an NCAA record 57 consecutive games. Concordia University, St. Paul garnered the fi rst women’s title in 2007 as its volleyball team won the National Championship. Following the 2004-05 season, Winona State became the fi rst team other than Minnesota Duluth to capture the NSIC All-Sports Competition trophy. The Warriors have taken home the trophy now the last two seasons. Winona State put the NSIC on the national map in 2006 as they hosted and won the NCAA North Central Regional Tournament and went on to capture the Division II National Championship. Since 2000, the NSIC has participated in one of two offi cially-sanctioned NCAA Division II football bowl games in the country. Dat-ing back to 1948, the Mineral Water Bowl is hosted by the Quarterback Club of Excelsior Springs, Missouri. The game matches the highest-fi nishing team from the NSIC not selected for the NCAA Division II playoffs against the highest-fi nishing team from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) not participating in the NCAA Division II playoffs. The fi rst NSIC/MIAA meeting in 2000 marked the Mineral Water Bowl’s inaugural year of the Division II era. Wayne State represented the NSIC in the 2007 Mineral Water Bowl game and dropped a hard-fought 20-13 contest to Missouri Western. Over the years the NSIC, comprised of schools of modest size, has provided extremely competitive intercollegiate athletic programs for its members. Although the programs are not designed to be equal to Division I athletics, many former NSIC athletes have distin-guished themselves in national and international competition. Each member school emphasizes the educational, entertainment and unifying value of sports while pointing with pride to the many advantages to be gained by attending these colleges and universities. As some affi liated with the conference have coined, the NSIC quite possibly is, “the most competitive conference in NCAA Division II.”
