It is with pride and gratitude that we share our 2018 Impact Report. Pride because of the impact we made in the lives of thousands of people this past year and gratitude because so many of YOU — individuals and families, foundations and organizations, small and large companies — stepped up to shelter our city’s most vulnerable and to close the gap in funding caused by the increased number of homeless families at our doors.

2018 was a year unlike any other in our 36-year history — it was a year of increased need demanding increased response.

Our four shelters were overflowing beginning in January, and Bethany House responded to the need by placing families in hotel rooms. By May, we had already sheltered a record number of families, and we were fearful of even more families arriving when the summer spike in family homelessness would begin, as it does every June.

The unprecedented increase in the number of families seeking shelter required rental of a fifth shelter facility. In June of 2018, an empty group home on the property of St. Aloysius in Bond Hill became our fifth shelter, replacing the hotel beds. Our families are now scattered among five shelters in South Fairmount, Westwood, College Hill and Bond Hill.

2018 ended with the purchase of property on which to build a new facility, which will consolidate our seven buildings. After three and a half years of searching for property, Bethany House purchased 2.63 acres from St. Aloysius at the corner of Reading Road and Joseph Street in Bond Hill.

The increased need we saw in 2018 reinforces the urgency of our efforts to consolidate our five shelters and two office buildings. The faces of the 1,500 children we sheltered and housed this year show how critical our work is. We invite you to celebrate with us as we review the IMPACT YOU had in 2018!

We pray you will continue to help us fulfill our vital mission.

RHYAN During her senior year, Rhyan’s pregnancy forced her to drop out of high school before graduation. For four years, she and Samorie, her daughter, bounced between the homes of family and friends, which places a great deal of strain upon the best of relationships. When she finally had no one else to turn to for a safe place to stay, in desperation she came to Bethany House.

Rhyan says she “cried her eyes out” during her initial interview, but Janice Clay, Assistant Shelter Director, was very kind and understanding. She assured Rhyan that she was doing the best thing for herself and her daughter. Ms. Janice comforted Rhyan and attended to her immediate needs by providing fresh linens, personal hygiene kits, and even socks and pajamas for five-year-old Samorie to help her feel at home.

Having maintained her hospital cafeteria job and with a commitment to not be homeless for long, Rhyan came to Bethany House determined to find housing quickly. With the help of her “wonderful” Rapid Rehousing Case Manager Kymjetta Carr, Rhyan knew what she needed to do to achieve her goal. After seven days in shelter and with guidance from Ms. Kymjetta, housing for Rhyan and her daughter was established. On the eighth day, they moved from the shelter into their first apartment. Rhyan’s support from Bethany House continued after they exited shelter, too, as Ms. Kymjetta assisted her with obtaining Section 8 housing. With this voucher, they were able to move to an apartment closer to Samorie’s school.

Rhyan understands that education is the key to independence for herself and her daughter. Through hard work and determination, Rhyan completed high school and received her diploma. She’s currently enrolled in post-secondary classes, and will soon begin work as a mentor for at-risk youth. Rhyan considers hers a success story, and she can’t hold back her tears when she speaks of her gratitude to Bethany House. “Bethany House was with me 100 percent, every step of the way. It’s all about you when you come into the Bethany House. If you want help, you get the help you need, and I want to thank Bethany House for the help they gave me.”

SYDNEE As a foster child, Sydnee did not benefit from the nurturing family life that every child needs. As soon as she turned 18, she was suddenly on her own. Sydnee moved on to campus at University of Cincinnati and began taking classes, but found herself unprepared and overwhelmed. She began “couch hopping” among friends and family. Finding herself pregnant with her second child and never having been taught how to live as an independent adult, Sydnee found herself sinking into depression. She and her children turned to Bethany House.

At the Bethany House shelter, the family began their journey toward independence. “Bethany House never stopped helping us, not for one

second,” says Sydnee. Bethany House connected Sydnee to mental health counseling to teach her how to cope with all of her stressors. At Bethany

LORA AND WILLWhen Will, a former emergency medical technician, developed a seizure disorder, he was no longer able to work and provide for his family. Sons Nathaniel and Jeremiah both suffer from disabilities, and mom Lora was forced to quit her job so she could be the full-time caregiver for her family. Days after paying their rent, the family was asked by their landlord to vacate their apartment immediately. Having already paid their entire month’s rent, they had no money left for the security deposits and initial rent required to sign a lease for a new apartment. They turned to Bethany House for help. With two young sons, their goal was to be in their own place by the time school started. Bethany House provided them with a place to stay and the services they needed to regain their independence.

Will says, “Without Bethany House, I don’t know where we would’ve gone. We were out of options. With it being last minute, nobody was really equipped to be able to try and help us.” With the family living on a fixed income, their search for a new home was disappointing at times, in part because of Will’s service dog, who is an integral part of the family. Bethany House staff helped complete the required documentation to be able to bring their dog to the shelter, which was a tremendous source of relief to the family. The family was able to meet their goal of being in their own place by the time school started.

Will and Lora shared their feelings that Janice Clay, Assistant Shelter Director, and Bernita Bell, Shelter Case Manager, were wonderful to work with. They are grateful that Bethany House remained a constant source of help even after they exited the shelter. States Ms. Bernita, “Lora and Will were very self-motivated, and all about their family. They didn’t ask for much, were easy to work with, and I was very impressed with how grateful and thankful they were for our help.” Lora would like to tell donors and supporters of Bethany House that, “…their time, their money, their donations are greatly appreciated. Without their donations, getting back on our feet would not have been possible. It’s people like them that make us a success story coming out of Bethany House. It’s hard to put into words how grateful we are for Bethany House.”

House, she learned skills to help her be a better parent for her daughters. Denise Hill, Bethany Child/Parent Manager, remarked that, “Sydnee is a phenomenal mother. Her little girls are healthy, vibrant and happy.” Ms. Denise worked with Sydnee to get the baby up to date on immunizations and connected the family with child care so that Sydnee was able to search for jobs and apartments. Case manager LaDeirdre Mango taught Sydnee how manage her own life and walked her through the process required to quickly enroll in Section 8 housing. Within six weeks, Sydnee found the apartment where she currently resides with her two daughters. Sydnee smiles as she says, “Bethany House provided us with a nice furnished apartment and everything I needed to set up housekeeping. They also gave me the resources and transportation

to help me find a job.” Rapid Re-Housing case manager Kymjetta Carr checks in with Sydnee frequently to be sure that her family is continuing to do well.

Today, Sydnee is back in school; her daughters are “amazing”; and she says that with the help of Bethany House, she has made a complete turnaround. “I’m in a way better position now than what I was in before I went to the shelter at Bethany House. Nothing is the same; it’s been a complete change. I’m still a work in progress, but I’ve come a long, long way. Anytime I needed help, Bethany House helped me any way they could. I don’t know where I would be if it hadn’t been for Bethany House.”

Are YOU Interested in Leaving a Legacy for Cincinnati’s Homeless Families?

A bequest through a Last Will and Testament is the simplest way to create a lasting legacy of support to homeless children and their parents in our community.

Suggested language for making a bequest to Bethany House Services:

“I give, devise and bequeath to Bethany House Services, 1841 Fairmount Avenue, Cincinnati OH 45214, the sum of $____ or ____% of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate for its general purpose.”

BETHANY’S FUTURE

After three and a half years of searching for property to build a new facility, in November of 2018, Bethany House purchased 2.63 acres from St. Aloysius at the corner of Reading Road and Joseph Street in Bond Hill.

Our goal is to consolidate all seven buildings into one facility for all of our families and staff. A single modern facility will eliminate rent payments for apartment buildings and hotel bills when shelter beds are full.

The new facility will bring critical services to all families. Medical and mental health services, workforce development, literacy/tutoring for parents and children, and mentoring can be available to all families on-site. Most important, it will ensure that all of our children and their parents receive equal access to our comprehensive services provided in a congregate setting.

Housing all guests in one facility will enable staff to provide 24-hour supervision, assistance and counseling, educational classes to overcome obstacles to self-sufficiency, monitor school attendance for the children, and model positive parenting behaviors.

Architects are preparing drawings, and the Bethany House Board of Directors is beginning work on

a Capital Campaign. The Board and staff are committed to ensuring that Bethany House has the resources needed to optimize family stabilization and self-sufficiency and to reduce the burdens — human and financial — that result from family homelessness.

A one-site Bethany House will be a game-changer for our families, our staff and our community as we work together to ensure our vision of living in a community where all families have a place to call home!

2018 DONORSTHANK YOU TO OUR 2018 DONORSThank you to all of our donors in 2018! Through your support of our annual fund, special events and your gift-in-kind donations, we have been able to provide homeless families with emergency shelter, housing and support services. Each donor is very important to us, and we have made every effort to ensure the accuracy of all names listed. If a name was overlooked or printed incorrectly, please contact us at 513-557-2402 so we can correct our records.

Annual giving is critical to our fundraising efforts at Bethany House and provides unrestricted funding for our families and our services. In 2018, it was only because of the overwhelming generosity of donors that we were able to open a fifth location to shelter all of the families that arrived at our door. Our sincere thanks for YOUR support!

There is no magic wand for improving your life situation – you have to have the desire to change it yourself. The support I found at Bethany House empowered me to achieve much more than I could have imagined. And because of this empowerment, it is my absolute pleasure to give back to an organization that gave so much to me.” – Monique
