According to a report recently released from the Delaware Tourism Office, the tourism industry contributed $3.1 billion to the economy in 2015. Reports of this nature typically run a year behind. Sussex County alone hosts approximately 7 million visitors a year, especially as the shoulder seasons have grown in visitors and events. In 2015, the industry brought $1.7 billion to the County and 17,000 tourism-related jobs. An increasing influence on the Quiet Resorts is the second home rental market. In 2015, a total of 39,130 homes were estimated to be rented throughout the State with 37,851 seasonal second homes rented in Sussex County. This market alone brings more than $100 million of revenue to the County. Tourism in Delaware has grown drastically between 2008 and 2015, with 1.6 million more visitors contributing $79 million in tax revenue and creating 11,000 more jobs. However, a seasonal small business owner or lodging accommodation are not the only entities who experience the positive financial impact on their bank account. Without tourism, each Delaware household would pay an additional $1,417 in taxes each year. For the complete statistics in the 2015 Tourism Report, visit www.visitdelaware.com. M ember SPOTLIGHT: That Guy With A Broom

Introducing SUSIE MILLER...

Five years ago Daisy and Dylan Ewing moved to Delaware from California to live in a more affordable area and be close to family. Intending to start their own business, they decided on a cleaning service and That Guy With A Broom was born. Starting out in their living room, they began to develop the new business. According to Dylan, “I’m a Veteran and I give attention to detail.” Accordingly, Dylan took classes at the Cleaning Management Institute to learn the craft and business. Dylan’s military background and Daisy’s real estate experience helped them grow the business steadily, and after their first summer in 2012, they began adding employees to meet the burgeoning client base. It was then they were contacted by SCORE – Counselors to America’s Small Business. According to Dylan, he “thought it might be a scam, however it turned out to be

legitimate,” and they were assigned a mentor from SCORE to help them develop a strong foundation for doing business.

Over the years they have focused on developing their staff by offering exemplary training, and some fun on the side. They have “Fun Day Sundays” with the teams to foster camaraderie and teamwork. They also participate in Cleaning for a Reason, where they clean homes for women battling cancer for free.

This strong internal and community-focused foundation has led them to the point that they are expanding into a 3,000 square foot building in Millville, where they will have a unique set of products are services to offer. The building will have a large meeting area available for local businesses to use, displays of cleaning products and equipment for sale, and be the home base for their growing team. Future plans include wine tastings with tips on how to remove wine stains, paint nights with information on how to remove crayon marks, and more. They are very interested in partnering with other local businesses and helping them grow. They look to the Chamber to continue to make those connections for them. Members since 2014, they immediately became a mainstay at networking events. Daisy and Dylan are passionate about partnering with local businesses and helping them out; they want to pay forward the incredible mentoring they received from SCORE.

That Guy With A Broom is currently in the running for a national award from SCORE: The American Small Business Championship. Seven businesses in Delaware entered the competition, and That Guy With A Broom received the most online votes to move on to the next level. The grand prize is $25,000, sponsored by Sam’s Club. Dylan says if they win, the will “use the money to expand their inventory and make their new building the best it can be.”

For its fifth anniversary, That Guy With A Broom is holding a grand opening at its new building on Saturday, March 25, at 2:00 p.m. at 35247 Atlantic Avenue in Millville. All are invited! Come see the fruits of their labor and vision. Here’s to the next five years; Dylan and Daisy dream big, and they sure know how to clean up on success!

The Chamber welcomes Susie Miller into the newly-created position Tourism Specialist Coordinator. Susie has vast experience in the tourism industry specifically in a seasonal market. Interestingly enough, she worked in a town both exactly similar and opposite of Bethany Beach and its surrounding towns. Susie spent over 20 years in Anchorage Alaska learning the business in various positions such as a Project Manager, Meeting and Event Planner and a Guest Services Supervisor. She recently moved back to Ocean View where her family owns a home. Growing up, Susie spent the majority of her summers in the Quiet Resorts and continued the tradition even when in Alaska. She has an innate knowledge of the area and industry. In the upcoming weeks, stop in to the Information and meet Susie as the newest member of Chamber Team!

SUSSEX COUNTY INTRODUCES DIGITAL ZONING MAPSussex County has released a new digital zoning map. The map has no effect on zoning moves in the county, however the map is the first comprehensive electronic version of a map that was first created in the early 1970s.The map includes more than 160,000 parcels, their zoning, and other land-use data, including aerial images, addressing, lot dimensions, and various approvals. Staff from the County’s Planning & Zoning and Mapping & Addressing offices worked with geographic information systems (GIS) specialists from the Eastern Shore Regional GIS Cooperative and Salisbury University in Maryland for the past 18 months to digitize and update the zoning map, which shows all of the County’s 13 zoning categories. “This map offers the public the most up-to-date information in an easy-to-use format that’s clear, accurate and always accessible,” said County Administrator Todd F. Lawson, who demonstrated the new digital map during the County Council’s regular weekly meeting. “This latest offering furthers the county’s efforts to be more efficient in serving our constituents.” The map leaves in place all current zoning and approvals that exist within the county, Lawson stressed.
