SAVE THE DATE BETA TAU MEETINGS 2014-2015

The Grand Hyatt has a block of rooms for DKG members using this link: https://aws.passkey.com/g/25186170 for reservations. Reserve only the rooms you need and not extra rooms “just in case”. Reserve now to assure that you have a room at the Grand Hyatt. Rooms go fast, especially since the whole convention is being held there. An overflow hotel will be determined at a later date, but will require walking or driving to the Grand Hyatt for the convention. Rates may or may not be the same.

Rate for a double room for up to 2 people on Thursday through Sunday nights is $139 per night. Add $10 more for 3 people and $20 more for 4 people. The Tuesday and Wednesday night rate is $199. (Their regular room rates are $245 and $279. So it is a good rate.)

The Honor of Membership Words From The Editor

In the October 2014 issue of the Beta Tau Dialogue, beginning on page 5, Jerrie Dooley, Area 6 Coordinator, writes about The Honor of Membership. Also, included in the article is a “Blueprint for Initiation,” A strategy to help increase membership, revitalize struggling chapters, and further enhance healthy chapters. Jerrie’s chapter, Beta Zeta, implemented this strategy with wonderful and surprising results, increasing their membership by 13!

Please go to the Beta Tau website, and under the NEWS heading, find the October 2014 newsletter and reread Jerrie’s very informative article. Beta Tau’s membership has not declined this year, but so far, our chapter has NO candidates for membership. Take a little time out to think about someone or two you might want to invite to a meeting to find out more about DKG and Beta Tau.

Remember the Benefits of DKG

• Opportunities • Scholarship • Resumes • Mentoring • Networking and fellowship with other teachers • Leadership training • Vision • Opportunities to write •

Membership applications are sent to Carolyn Dahlgren, membership committee chair, [email protected].

“Recommendation for Membership” forms are available at the Texas State Organization Website under “Deadlines and Forms. http://alphastatetexas.org/deadlines.html

Beta Tau Shines!! . Many people get the cleaning and organizing bug at the beginning of each New Year. Did you get the fever? Why not look through your old jewelry and ask yourself the following questions:

! Are there items in my jewelry box just taking up space, which I’ll never wear again? ! Do I have one silver earring and can’t find its mate?

Donate your broken and old jewelry to the Beta Tau Shines Jewelry Sale in March. The proceeds go to benefit Global Awareness (Schools for Africa) and the Texas Women’s Storybook Project. Bring your donations to any Beta Tau meeting. Mismatched donated silver jewelry will be sold, and the monies collected added to Beta Tau’s account. At the January meeting, we will discuss the possibility of obtaining a booth at the June TSO Convention for the purpose of selling our shiny objects.

Awards Season Has Begun Words From The Editor

The People’s Choice Awards, The Golden Globe Awards, and now, Beta Tau is ready to receive nominations for the Key Women Educator Awards in the areas of Education, Community Service and Chapter Service. These awards are presented bi-annually. The 2015 Key Women Educators are recognized at the May Founders’ Day Tea.

Annually, Beta Tau locally honors a Pioneer Teacher and Master Educator at the March meeting. Both awards recognize a member’s outstanding service and contributions made to education. The Pioneer Teacher is one who has retired, while the Master Educator is one who is still actively teaching.

Nominations will be accepted at the January 17th meeting, or you may email your recommendations to Suzette Price, Awards Committee Chairman, [email protected].

Beta Tau November Meeting Minutes ...respectfully submitted by Kathy Jeffcoat

Beta Tau Recording Secretary

The November 20, 2014, business meeting of the Beta Tau chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma was called to order by President Rose Bradley at Trinity Baptist Church. Scotta Williams gave the treasurer's report. Brenda Krueger, head of the Scholarship Committee, announced that Veronica Zapata, a junior at Texas Lutheran University, is our only scholarship applicant. It was recommended that the scholarship amount be $500. The Membership Committee currently has no new member candidates; however, an initiation can take place at any meeting. Recruitment brochures to be placed at schools were discussed. The Communication Committee announced that the website has been updated and recertified, thanks to member Ann Carter.

The address is http://deltakappagamma.org/TX-betatau/. Jeanette Pierce discussed state convention business. She'll let us know when we can be of help. Congratulations to Jeanette for being accepted to the Leadership Council. The Founders Day Tea will be on Saturday, May 2 from 2-4 P.M. The location is still being arranged. The purpose is to celebrate key women educators and our founders. Tickets will cost $10.

After the November business meeting, members toured the Children’s Center at Trinity Baptist Church. San Antonio artist, Shawn Bridges, fills the center with murals representing Noah’s ark. To find out more about Shawn and see more murals, go to http://www.shawnbridges.com

DKG Supports Schools for Africa Words From The Editor

UNICEF and its partners, one of which is Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, are collaborating with governments and communities in 13 sub-Saharan African countries to create schools that offer a safe environment where children can learn, play, and have access to clean water and sanitation facilities. The program focuses on girls, orphans, and other vulnerable groups who are at a high risk of dropping out.

Schools for Africa supports the concept of Child Friendly Schools, focusing on the needs of the children inside the classroom and beyond, by providing life skills, health education and information on the protection and prevention of HIV/AIDS.

On January 17th, Roberta Carlson, Beta Tau’s World Fellowship/Global Awareness chairman, will present a program highlighting DKG’s and Beta Tau’s involvement with Schools For Africa.

Recipes By Request

Beta Tau members are the best hostesses and serve up delicious dishes. Here are a few of the recipes you have

enjoyed and requested from December’s Silver Scholarship Tea.

Kathy Jeffcoat’s

Fresh Apple Cake

1 1/2 c. oil 2 eggs 3 c. chopped fine fresh apples 2 c. sugar 2 1/2 c. flour 1 1/2 t. salt 2 t. vanilla 1 c. chopped nuts 1/2 t. vanilla 3 t. soda

• Mix apples, sugar, oil & vanilla. • Beat in eggs. • Add flour, salt, soda & cinnamon.

Mix in nuts - mix well. • Pour into greased 9X13 pan. Bake

300 degrees 1 hour.

Sauce 1 c. brown sugar 3/4 c. water 1 1/2 T cornstarch 3 T butter

• Combine & cook until thickened. • Pour on cake while cake & sauce are

hot. • Sprinkle with black chopped walnuts

(if you can find them!).

Carolyn Dahlgren’s

Jalapeno Pie

1 Stick of Kraft Cracker Barrel (Red) Cheddar Cheese 6 Whipped Eggs Portion of jar of jalapeno pepper slices

• Shred the Cracker Barrel Brick of Cheese and set aside.

• Line the bottom of a pie pan (preferably glass) with the jalapeno pepper slices. You do not cover the bottom; just place the peppers with spaces between. The more you use the hotter it will be.

• Cover peppers with the cheese and follow that with the egg mixture.

• Bake in a 275* oven for 45 minutes. Let cool and slice into serving size pieces. Awfully easy and always tastes good!

Loretta Huddleston’s

Cheese Ball

2 - 8 oz. pkg. cream cheese 1 - 8 oz. can crushed pineapple drained 2 c. chopped pecans 1/4 c. green pepper, finely chopped 2 T. green onion, chopped fine 1 T. Lowry’s Seasoned Salt

• Combine softened cream cheese with pineapple, green pepper, onion, seasoning salt and 1 cup chopped pecans.

• Mix well and form a ball and roll in 1 cup chopped pecans and refrigerate until firm.

• Better if made one day ahead.

The Beta Tau Singing Sisters brought sweet joy to the people at Meridian Care at Grayson Square over the holidays.

The Meridian Care residents joined in singing the songs and carols of the season.

It was a special day of Christmas cheer for all involved.

Our Thoughts & Prayers Go Out To…….

Our Beta Tau sister Mary Hale….at the beginning of December, Mary’s sister suffered 3 strokes and couldn’t move her left side and hand. Mary has been in Greenville, South Carolina helping her sister. She misses us and hopes to see us in February.

Dear Presidents - It hurts my heart to send this, but we have lost a very dear sister today with the passing of Wynona Lipsett. I wrote you earlier about her cancer. I am again asking you to send this out to your members as so many knew Wynona from her beautiful music at the state conventions. Her family, her chapter, and all who knew her will sorely miss her. Please keep this family in your prayers. – Jerrie Dooley, Area 6 Coordinator
