I will be taking leave at the end of this week until the end of Term 3. I am of course delighted to let you know that Mrs Travers will be relieving as Principal in my absence. My congratulations to Mrs Travers who was selected as relieving Principal on merit. Mrs Chandran will be assuming the full time teaching role on class 23T from Tuesday 12 th until the end of term. MOVIE NIGHT IS HERE!!! Tomorrow night will be our second Outdoor Movie night., I am very much looking forward to seeing the entire school community there, celebrating our community under the stars whilst being entertained. I hope you can make it. Please see the additional information within this newsletter. SASS RECOGNITION WEEK This week we acknowledged our fantastic School Administrative Support Staff. SASS week is an annual event where we recognise the outstanding work done by our school office, maintenance and learning support staff. At Bert Oldfield Public School, we are very lucky to have dedicated SASS staff who are committed to service and meeting the needs of the staff, parents and children of the Bert Oldfield community. We thank our administrative staff, Mrs Reynolds and Miss Tracy, our School Learning Support Officers, Mrs Turnbull, Mrs Hull, Mrs Atkim, Mrs Tyndall, Mrs Ernest-Tumu, Mrs Clegg, and our General Assistants, Mr Hamilton and Mr Brechin for their outstanding work on our grounds and buildings. THE TELL THEM FROM ME STUDENT FEEDBACK SURVEY I am again delighted that our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the ‘Tell Them From Me’ student feedback survey. The survey, competed by students in Year 4, 5 and 6, aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. You may remember that our students also participated in a ‘Tell Them From Me’ student survey in Term 1 this year. Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year. More information about the survey is available at: http:// surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the ‘Tell Them From Me’ survey to help improve how they do things at school. I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. SASS week is an annual event where we recognise the outstanding work done by our school office, maintenance and learning support staff.

THE TELL THEM FROM ME STUDENT FEEDBACK SURVEY I am again delighted that our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the ‘Tell Them From Me’ student feedback survey. The survey, competed by students in Year 4, 5 and 6, aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. administered during school hours between 11th September and 21 st October. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please contact the school. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from the website above. THE PARTNERS IN LEARNING PARENT FEEDBACK SURVEY Our school will again be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the ‘Tell Them From Me’ suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement. Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour as well as your views on your child’s learning. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online at home. The survey will

typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely

confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between 11th

September and 21st October.

Participating in the survey is voluntary, however, your responses are

very much appreciated.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents A separate note will come home shortly asking you to compete the survey. I ask that you all participate to ensure we have the very best feedback about our school and the very best opportunity to plan for a better school. ZONE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL Last week myself and Mrs Sigg attended the Seven Hills/ Wentworthville PSSA Athletics Carnival at Blacktown Olympic Park. I am glad to report that all of our students are to be commended for their efforts and their behaviour. I would like to thank Mrs. Sigg as our team manager and for her efforts on the day and organising our students’ attendance. ENROLMENTS FOR KINDERGARTEN We are currently accepting applications for enrolment in Kindergarten 2018. If you have a child who will be turning 5 before 31st July, 2018 and you are intending to enrol them for next year, please collect and complete an application form and return it to the office. Likewise, if you have a neighbour or friends with pre-school children who are intending to commence next year, please advise them that it is time to enrol. SCHOOL CONTRIBUTIONS Our sincere thanks to all the families who have managed to pay their school contribution. Your contribution which is utilised wisely and widely, has helped to again fund a wealth of school based resources and equipment. If you have been unable to pay your school contribution, we would greatly appreciate the payment as soon as possible. Payments can be made in cash, cheque made out to Bert Oldfield Public School or on-line. You will find information about online payments within this newsletter.

SCHOOL STARTS AT 9:00AM My thanks to all parents and carers who ensure their children arrive at school by 8:55am each morning. By ensuring that your child arrives on time, you are giving them the best chance for a successful day. Arriving at school and class on time has the following benefits.

ensures that your child doesn’t miss out on the important learning activities scheduled early in the day when they are most alert,

helps your child to learn the importance of punctuality and routine,

gives your child time to greet their friends before class and therefore reduces the opportunity for classroom disruption,

is a mark of respect for the school’s expectations. Students that arrive late to school impact on the work of the office staff, lose significant amounts of student learning time, and disrupt the learning of others.

Students are expected to be at school on the playground when the 9:00am bell sounds and are expected to be a part of our morning assembly. There are many important messages regarding the daily schedule and changes to routine announced at this assembly. If students are only a few minutes late they are expected to go to the office to obtain a late note. This is a requirement of the school in relation to the Education Act and compulsory school attendance. I would like to remind parents that if your child is running late you are also required to bring your child to the front office to collect the late pass. It is essential that parents are a part of this process to confirm the reason for late arrival. It is not sufficient for the child to come to the office on their own as many children are unable to communicate the reason for their late arrival.

Your support in this would be greatly appreciated as unexplained late arrivals do come to the attention of the Home School Liaison Officer. Lateness is recorded as a partial absence on school records and must be explained to the school the same way as other forms of absence. Excuses for being late to school are also judged as being acceptable and unacceptable. Sleeping in is an unacceptable excuse for being late to school and will be recorded as unexplained. I hope you can work with the school to ensure that your child arrives before 9:00am each day.

FATHER’S DAY Congratulations again to P&C for their efforts for Father’s Day. This year they ran a Father’s Day Chocolate stall to make last Sunday a special day. We appreciate the time and effort that has gone into ordering and providing the gifts to the children and the manner in which the gifts were presented. I hope that all of our fathers had an enjoyable day and were pampered by their children. On a personal note I had to cook breakfast for my entire family. They all slept in. Oh well!!!!!

STAFF CAR PARK A gentle reminder that parents and students are not to walk through, or park, in the staff car park area—this is a WH&S safety rule. We need to keep our children safe at all times so please enter and exit through the entry gate near the school sign when arriving at school, or the gates on Wall Park and Orana Avenue.
