From the Principal’s Desk

On Thursday 30th March we will celebrate our cultural diversity through our Harmony Day activities. We hope that you can come along for “Salaka Drumming”, an interactive multicultural awareness performance where all the students will get to play on the drums and a variety of musical instruments. There is of course a picnic recess with your children if you would like to bring along some food. The Community Hub will be offering coffee, tea and biscuits and the canteen will be selling an array of “orange” themed treats.

Harmony Day is a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls

Australia home – from the traditional owners of this land to those who

have come from many countries around the world. By participating in

Harmony Day activities, we can learn and understand how all

Australians from diverse backgrounds belong to this nation and enrich

it. After the performance, our students will join with a buddy class to

celebrate diversity and communicate the message that “Everybody

Belongs”. Please talk to your children about the meaning of tolerance

and respect for others in our ever growing culturally and socially

diverse community.

STAFF CAR PARK A gentle reminder that parents and students are not to walk through, or park, in the staff car park area—this is a WH&S safety rule. We need to keep our children safe at all times so please enter an exit through the entry gate near the school sign when arriving at school, or the gates on Wall Park and Orana Avenue.

GENERAL SCHOOL CONTRIBUTIONS The General School contribution is a vital component of our school budget. The fees provide much needed assistance with the purchase of classroom requisites, sporting equipment, library resources, art and craft supplies, computer technology, reading resources and various resources for learning. To enable us to fully utilise your contribution, please make your payment on or before the last day of term. If all students were to pay the contribution, we would accrue the princely sum of $18,000.00 to spend on additional quality resources. So please pay the contribution.

PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS I hope that all parents and carers are able to take up the opportunity to meat one to one with their child’s teacher. Parent teacher interviews are taking place in Week 10 and you should by now have received your invitation to attend these important and informative meetings, with a confirmation of your requested time coming to you by next week. These meetings are where parents and teachers have an opportunity to discuss the progress of individual students and build a mutually beneficial relationship. Our staff are always greatly appreciative of all those who take up this important opportunity, and hope that together we will be able to enrich our students learning throughout the 2017 school year by maintaining purposeful communication. The opportunity to discuss your child's progress at this stage of the year assists in ensuring the best possible outcomes for your child. I encourage you to ensure that you book in to talk to your child’s teacher to clarify their learning progress and discuss any issues that may assist them and the teacher. Below are some tips for you to be aware of when coming to the interview. Tips for Parents During Parent Teacher Interviews Parent teacher conferences are a time when you have a one-on-one dialogue with your child’s teacher, so it’s worth doing more than just showing up to parent teacher night at the right time. To get the most out of the experience, below are some questions you need to ask and ideas on how to best prepare for your parent teacher sessions. Be prompt to respond Usually teachers will send home a parent teacher note explaining the times they are available to meet. If you're one of the first parents to send the form back, you're more likely to get the time slot that you or you and your partner are able to attend. Being there together sends a strong message to the teacher that both of you are interested in learning about your child’s needs and successes. Ask for double time if you have complex issues to discuss.Time is tight during parent teacher conferences. If there are lengthy issues to address, be sure to ask for extra time ahead of time. After the interview, be sure to debrief your children so they know what happened.

Eco Warriors—helping our sustainability We have had the pleasure of joining in with an organization that is helping schools improve their sustainability. Dharma Karta is a registered Australian charity, based in Western Sydney, that empowers individuals and communities to live by their values and realise their potential to contribute to the wellbeing of the individual, society and the environment. Over 2015-16, our 'My Community, My Environment' program engaged 280 adults of various CALD backgrounds in the Blacktown LGA (including Sudanese, Filipino, Iranian, Chinese, Indian, Sri Lankan) in a sustainable living program. In 2016-17, we are delivering STARS, a fun after-school program for children living in and around the Wentworthville Social Housing Estate. we embark on the following:• Expansion of 'My Community, My Environment' to 3 additional LGAs in Western Sydney• Delivery of 'STARS' at a public school in Parramatta LGA• The new 'Eco-Champions' and 'Eco-Conscious Communities' programs working with students & families, partnering with 3 public schools in Blacktown LGA, Bert Oldfield Public School happens to be one of the lucky schools engaged with this organisation. We have asked 15 students from Years 5 and Years 6 to participate in the program with Mr Galloway-Smith and Mrs Lessells, to identify a range of projects within the school that might improver our school environment and make us significantly more sustainable. The group meets every Friday at lunchtimes and their goal is to develop projects and run projects, as well as educate the entire student body about how we can be more sustainable. In addition to the Eco warriors program, who call themselves the “Enviromentals,” Dharma Karta is assisting our school with exploring a solar power system on the classroom rooves, as well as the replacement of all of our current classroom lighting with LED lighting. All of these initiatives will save the school significant costs over a number of years, releasing funds to spend on our children's learning.

Prepare your own questions and take a notebook There’s nothing more frustrating than walking out the door and remembering all of the things you wanted to ask. Make sure to have those questions with you and write down the answers. That way you can refer to your notes later, either when talking to your child or if there is something you need clarified. Communicate relevant news to the teacher Your child’s teacher will also be hoping to glean what life is like for your child at home, and this is the time to open up and be honest. If your child is having trouble sleeping, if you have moved house or had a new baby, or if you have recently split from your partner, then it’s worth communicating these things to the teacher as it can affect your child’s learning. Also, let your child’s teacher know if there have been any medical diagnoses in the past or present and if your child is on medication. Things that may affect how your child is acting and reacting are important to mention. NAPLAN Parent information National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy If your child is currently in Year 3, 5, 7 or 9, they'll sit NAPLAN tests this May. And despite what you may have heard, there's no reason to panic or start an intensive study schedule for your child. Find out more: http://www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/homework-and-study/homework-tips/all-about-naplan . There will be an information session at school to present information about the NAPLAN assessments for interested parents. Please look out for the information flyer coming to you soon.

OT Groups

Occupational Therapy Groups have been operating over the last 2 weeks for identified students. The aim of these groups is to strength-en hand and finger muscles which would further develop fine motor skills. If you have any disused padlocks (with eys), bubble wrap, wool or ribbon at home that you would like to donate for use within these groups, please have your child deliver them to Ms Perente's room. We would love to have parent helpers assist with Occupational Therapy Groups. Please contact Mrs Bray if you are able to assist with the Years 1 and 2 OT group on Mondays from 11.20 to 12pm. Please see Ms Perente if you are able to assist with the Years 3 to 6 OT groups which are held on Fridays from 9 to 10am.
