Editorial PP Phang Poke Shum President’s Message Leong Choy Ying

Greetings from Atlanta

It has been extremely hectic here in Atlanta preparing and celebrating my sister’s wedding.

It was a beautiful and successful wedding with a mixture of Laotian, Chinese and American ceremonies throughout the day. What impressed me most was that despite having

to pack in all the different elements in on that day, it was perfectly planned and each detail was smoothly executed. Even the weather was on our

side. Everyone from different cultural backgrounds and nationalities worked on different tasks and like an orchestra, brought out a beautiful melody.

I cannot help but reflect on our upcoming District Conference.

While missing on the action for the past week or so, I am being kept updated by all the e-mails and the minutes of meetings. I am sure that if everyone in our club chips in and do our part, we will be able to bring out a grand and moving “symphony” on the 10 – 12 December 2010.

In Rotary Service,

President RY 2010/2011

CElEbRATING RoTARy FouNDATIoN MoNTH

Rotary designates certain months for certain specific activities and has designated November as the Rotary Foundation Month. Rotary believes that small efforts to advance understanding and goodwill among people of different nations and to improve the quality of life builds up a foundation of peace. Accordingly the Rotary Foundation is regarded as one of the many building blocks towards creating goodwill in the world. The other building blocks are “special international observances and events, international meetings, international educational and cultural activities and World Community Service”.

When a Rotary club tries to follow the directive of RI to observe November as the Rotary Foundation Month, what do they have to do? There are a number of activities they can carry out.

1. Educate members on the work of the Rotary Foundation (TRF) by arranging talks on the subject. There are many activities carried out by TRF and Rotarians must know them to appreciate the work. Many Rotarians especially the newer ones equate TRF to the Paul Harris Fellows as they are asked to contribute to it. However it is important to let them know where their money goes to and other programmes. In actual fact, not many know that a portion on this money come back to the district and club for them to use in projects.

The programmes carried out by the TRF are many and some of the common ones that our Club are active in are:

a) Ambassadorial Scholarships b) Group Study Exchange (Our Club is active in

this one, and we have hosted many participants) c) Matching Grants (Our Club has carried out

many projects under this grant eg “Hot & Cold water for the Jenjarom Old Folks Home”, “Providing Vocational Training to Slow Learners in the Laundry Business”, “Literacy a tool to get out of Poverty” and many others.

d) Polio Plus (we have carried out many exercise on this, the latest one is the “Polio Walk for Rotary”.

2. Invite current and former participants in the TRF to speak to the Club during the weekly regular meeting. Each year we do invite those who had gone for the Group Study Exchange programme or about to leave for another district to give a presentation to the Club on their experiences.

....continue next column

Editorial ....(continue)

3. Promote TRF programmes including EREy (Every Rotarian Every Year) contribution

4. Recognition of contributors to the TRF programmes including awarding PHFs to outstanding public personalities.

The TRF is a very important arm of Rotary and partly because of its activities Rotary has become well known all over the world. In particular is the objective to promote international understanding and peace.

Pudu Rotarians, please understand this aspect of Rotary more so that you can participate more to promote world peace and harmony.

Rotary’s workGlobal Polio Eradication Initiative spearheading partners

a) Rotary International

Through its PolioPlus program, established in 1985, more than one million Rotary club members have

volunteered their time and personal resources to protect more than two billion children in 122 countries from polio. To date, the organization has contributed more than US$700 million -- a figure that will rise to more than $850 million by the time the world is certified free from polio. Rotary club members, known as Rotarians, also provide valuable support in the field during National Immunization Days and work diligently to secure essential political and financial support from both polio-free and polio affected governments.

b) World Health Organization

WHO, through its headquarters, regional and country offices, provides the overall technical direction and strategic planning for the management and coordination of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

c) U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

The Atlanta-based CDC deploys epidemiologists, public health experts, and scientists to WHO and UNICEF. CDC also works as the “viral detective” of the four partners, using its state-of-the-art virological surveillance expertise (genetic fingerprinting) to investigate outbreaks of polio, identify the strain of poliovirus involved and pinpoint its exact geographical origin.

d) UNICEF

UNICEF procures and distributes polio vaccines for routine and supplementary immunizations. UNICEF participates, along with WHO, in the implementation of intensified National Immunization Days and Subnational Immunization Days, as well as mop-up campaigns at the country level.

GoING To NEW HEIGHTS FoR THE ANNuAl PRoGRAMS FuNDTanya Wolff’s passion for supporting The Rotary Foundation led her to organize a fundraiser that was off the beaten path. She and three others trekked 18,000 feet to the base camp of Mt. Everest in Nepal in April to net almost US$48,500 for the Foundation’s Annual Programs Fund.

In addition to Wolff, 2009-10 governor of District 6330 (parts of Ontario, Canada, and Michigan, USA), the team was composed of Karlis Graubics Sr., 2009-10 governor of District 7600 (Virginia, USA); Eric Robinson, president of the Rotary Club of Wiarton, Ontario; and Robinson’s cousin, Douglas Robinson.

“When volunteering overseas with Rotary, I have been able to personally see and hear, taste and feel the work of the Foundation,” says Wolff, a Foundation Major Donor. “By giving to our Foundation, we bring help to the places where Rotary is needed the most and fulfill the Foundation’s mission of Doing Good in the World.” Read the full story.

bATTlE oF THE bANDS DElIVERSDave Legasse believes that nothing brings people together better than music.

A member of the Rotary Club of Savannah West, Georgia, USA, Legasse helped organize a Play It Forward concert in April that raised about $13,000 for the Annual Programs Fund. The brainchild of the Rotary Club of Savannah, the event featured professional and amateur musicians, including Rotarians, who performed in pop, rock, and jazz bands.

The funds raised didn’t replace club members’ individual Every Rotarian, Every Year contributions but supplemented their club’s donations.

“Most area clubs participated with talent, volunteers, ticket sales, sponsorships, attendance, donations,” says Legasse. “Play It Forward was a blowout good time, a family event, and fun for all ages. Our goal next year is $25,000!”

Jazz bassist Ben Tucker and singer Roger Moss, both Savannah club members, jam with other musicians at the Play It Forward fundraiser. Dave Legasse

A bANNER yEARClubs can qualify for four types of banner recognition during the Rotary year, including:

• 100%PaulHarrisFellowClub(everyactivemembera Paul Harris Fellow; club recognition granted one time only)

• Every Rotarian, Every Year Club (every activemember contributes some amount to the APF; club achieves an overall $100 per capita minimum)

• 100% Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member Club(every active member contributes $100 or more to the APF)

Banners for 2009-10 recognition will be mailed by October. Make sure your club qualifies for banner recognition in 2010-11!

THINK FouNDATIoN THouGHTSThe new list of Weekly Rotary Foundation Thoughts is now available. This collection of brief, thematic commentaries is an effective tool to help Rotarians learn how the Foundation is Doing Good in the World and to broaden participation in the EREY effort.

Club presidents are encouraged to open each meeting with a Foundation thought, ideally rotating the reading among club members. Here is a sample:

“When you hear the number 963 million, it’s difficult to get your head around it. But for the 963 million people who live with chronic hunger, it is not something they try to imagine but something they must try to survive. Malnutrition is the largest single contributor to disease; it imposes crushing economic burdens on the developing world. The Rotary Foundation is working to alleviate hunger and malnutrition. Many of the Matching Grants that the Foundation funds are for projects working toward the end of world hunger. Make your annual gift today.”

GoING FoR THE GoAlAt their June meeting, the Foundation Trustees set the 2010-11 Annual Programs Fund goal at US$95.5 million. This goal reflects the Foundation’s continuing commitment to fund humanitarian programs that are Doing Good in the World through the Every Rotarian, Every Year initiative.

You can check your contribution history online through Member Access. You must have an e-mail address on file at Rotary International (submit e-mail addresses to [email protected]).

EVERy RoTARIAN EVERy yEARA ROTARY FOUNDATION NEWSLETTER

SuPPlyING HElP AND HoPEContributions to the Annual Programs Fund (APF) keep Rotary Foundation programs humming in high gear to help people with desperate needs.

Your APF support through the “Every Rotarian, Every Year” initiative is vital to Doing Good in the World.

At the end of the Rotary year, 50 percent of each district’s donations to the Annual Programs Fund is credited to their District Designated Fund (DDF), while the other 50 percent goes to the World Fund. The Foundation uses the World Fund to support the worldwide programs it offers. Likewise, districts use their DDF to fund the Foundation programs they elect to participate in.

Recently, the Foundation was able to restore the World Fund budget for Matching Grants, largely because Rotarians donated a record amount of almost US$115 million to the Annual Programs Fund in 2007-08. The amount of the World Fund available for Matching Grants in 2010-11 increased 82 percent compared to 2009-10. 76TH RI DISTRICT CoNFERENCE REPoRT

By PP K.H. Low

We are just slightly over 40 days before the 76th District conference commences.

Yesterday was our District conference meeting date and from now on the meeting will be held weekly every Wednesday till the commencement of the conference.

The registration todate is now increasing towards the 300 mark through our target is set at 500.

Response from Rotarian has been slowly but surely coming in.

Even we do have a big delegation from Philipines this time round. Besides Philipines, we have registration from Singapore, Thailand and India.

I am also pleased to inform Yam Tuan Tuanku Mukriz and his consort will be the guest of honour for our Governor’s Banquet on the evening of 11th Dec 2010, its an honour for us to have Yam Tuan Tuanku Mukriz to grace this event.

As you aware, we have the “Elvis” all the way from Las Vegas to be with us during the evening.

If you are the fans of Elvis, remember those songs “Love you Tender” and “Are you Lonesome”.

Reminiscence the old times and join us to have good food and being serenade by Elvis for a price of RM100.00. Where can you get a 10 course dinner

and an interested activities at a 5 star Hotel with this price?

Our partner club, RC Danau Desa has been busy making preparation to have the most exciting and fun Welcome Dinner with the theme “Hawaian Beach Party”. We all know what RC Danau Desa is good at and with PP Gary Lim as our liason Rotarian, you can expect something of this nature “Tonight is the Night”

The whole organizing committee has been working very hard and it’s a pleasing sight to now hear conversation touching on conference at all come. This compares to say 2 months ago where the enthusiastic was at most lukewarm.

Even PDG Dr Paul Lee has shoot out many appeal letters to the Rotarians urging them to support the 76th District conference.

It was indeed heartening to hear and see many Rotarians have responded to this appeal.

Thank you PDG Paul.

If you see our Deputy Chairman Sim bee smiling at you at the club please return smile to him either with a RM100 as a bottle of whisky otherwise he might………

He has a herculean task to collect 50 bottle for our House of Friendship and to coerce our Pudu Rotarians to register for his conference.

We have set a target to have a 100% attendance for this conference. I know we can make it all together.

This is because funds for the 100 Future Vision pilot districts were budgeted separately for 2010-11, making it one of the largest World Fund budgets in Matching Grants history.

When every Rotarian contributes to the Foundation every year, we expand our capacity to bring help and hope to a hurting world.
